Got the chance to restore this very old and rusty hewing axe. The function of it was to cut a straight face on the side of a log. It was had made in Bulgaria, some time in the 1800’s. Very cool!

The handle making was more impressive imo, I thought u was steaming the wood to bend it straight.

That little turned up place on the end of the blade is supposed to be there, it is for when you need to tap it in hard places, great tool, u have done a good job, wish I still had one!

My grandfather was a leather worker, I hate myself for it now but I used to take his tools and shear stick in the yard because I liked how smooth the exposed wood felt.
Using naval jelly & steel wool to remove the rust from the axe would've been much easier & more thorough.

That bend you removed actually had a function.
You can see that it does end up with a bend when he's using the drawplane to remove the bark

That was a piece of art in it's natural history...a relic that probably could've been kept "as is".. for a display & heirloom...
Well art is routinely restored, and restoration is an art in itself.
