- Another event vlog for you guys this time with the super Maximus!!!
It was such a nearly event and for our first ever intermediate novice I was so proud as max tried really hard!!!
My first time riding an intermediate dressage test on another horse apart from Zeb and my first time jumping that height of showjumping on another horse apart from zeb so a lot of firsts that day!!!

Max is so athletic & so eager--you guys are a great team & such fun to watch. As all the experienced riders have been saying, stuff happens to everyone. You & Max will have many more chances to prove yourselves, it was an outstanding start. And Harry smooching up Max--very decent.

You said it well. There are so many ups and downs with horses. Overall, he was fantastic.
I was jump-judging a three-star course at the Kentucky Horse Park once when an experienced eventing mare came to a timber-type vertical that had a narrow revetted ditch in front of it with a tiny stream of water at the very bottom. The ditch was probably about 3 feet deep.
In the same split second that she committed to the takeoff, she glimpsed (or heard?) the trickle of running water at the bottom of the ditch. She slammed on the brakes but, because she had so much momentum, she started angling to the left to avoid the obstacle, just as Max did.
As a result, she unseated her rider and turned turtle, falling into the revetted ditch, ending up completely on her back but with her hindquarters twisted toward one side of the revet.
By some miracle, her surprised rider managed to step off her back onto the top of the revet during this split-second change of direction and didn’t fall.
We assessed the situation. The horse was lying on her spine at the bottom of this 3-foot deep ditch. She seemed to be unable to right herself, despite our efforts to encourage her. She stayed very calm, did not struggle at all, and appeared to be trying to assess the pickle she found herself in. She had no injuries that we could see.
The TD came over. We all stood around discussing the fact that what she had to do was to twist her hind end under her to get purchase, then just get up and walk out of the predicament she was in.
As if she heard us talking, that’s exactly what she did. She’d probably been laying there on her back for about 15 minutes by this time. We would have dismantled the fence except that there was nothing to dismantle. There was no way we could change the revetted sides of the ditch, which was sturdily constructed with huge timbers that held up both sides of the bank.
Once the mare figured out how to twist to get her feet under her, she stood up and walked straight out of the ditch and shook her head. She was calm and totally unfazed by this whole accident. A vet had arrived and started examining her. She had a very minor scrape on her jaw, but absolutely no other injuries. She had not even lost her bridle. Her eliminated rider walked her back to the stables, none the worse for wear.
These weird things happen. Her rider said that this mare had jumped these types of fences for years with no problems.
Horses just have such unbelievably quick reflexes that sometimes they end up worse off than if they had just ignored whatever thing they noticed at the last second.
I’ve jump-judged for over 30 years now, but I’ve never seen an accident quite like this one. I have seen horses change their trajectories upon takeoff to angle to one side or another of a fence, but never again with such dramatic results.

That horse is amazing. You can’t be disappointed as it was his first attempt and you’ve learned that ditchy things need a bit more riding. He was jumping as well as I’ve seen any of your horses. Well done.

I love this - it takes a village - so nice to see a family out having fun in pursuit of one person’s goals. It was also terrific riding and effort by rider and horse!! Lots to come like you said at the end.

I know you must have been disappointed, but wow what a beauty he is & what scope. He jumps so honestly and jumps his heart out for you. Can you tell your dad I love how he is with his beautiful Labrador, he reminds me of how I was with my sweet boy. My beloved Labrador Domino passed away on the 26th August this year & it’s left me distraught (& the rest of the family) I feel lost & empty. Domino had this huge presence even when he was sleeping. I love how your dad cuddles his dog, like I did with my boy.

You an Max did a grand job! Very solid on the dressage, and I swear as soon as he jumped the first fence in the show jumping I said going clear if you mind that jump on a bit of a hill that was catching so many, just thrilled for you and Max there! The xc well stuff happens, Max just had a wtf is this moment but you got around, onward, upward! Hope the hand was just a small twinger and soon forgotten.

That was absolutely brilliant, look back at your show jumping and see how confident and clever he was, cross country no problems, considering it was his biggest course he is allowed one blip, he didn't stop, tried his genuine best and then popped it, you have a v. talented horse and you rode confidentiality and well, take all the positive stuff which was all of it apart from v.frustating moment 🤣 Harry you were on your best behaviour, v.well done xx

He is a lovely horse, when you do bigger cross-country jumps like these you have to know how to fall off and live through it because it is a fast sport and it will happen as long as the horse is ok that's the thing you worry about most. You have to be a bit mad to do it glad she is ok 🙃 The horses that do well really enjoy it and with good riders the horses are absolutely fine like this horse. 😁
