- The 1992 Stock on the Central Line is being upgraded as part of the Central Line Improvement Project (CLIP) and the first one is now in service, running as a shuttle between Hainault and Woodford.
The complete works include the accessible area, passenger information screens, new audio announcemennts, the refreshed seating with a new moquette pattern, better lighting, better grab poles and CCTV cameras for the first time on the Central Line.

1:10 this is a test
It’s a good thing that the Central Line is receiving a proper upgrade and apart from the terrible new announcements, I’m just glad that these 30 year old trains finally have CCTV and that this consultation will possibly allow the Bakerloo line to receive NTfL before the Central does
i want these 92 trains gone or at least have better fans in them
The announcements are *apparently* temporary
CCTV? Genuinely? About blimmin time!
whats NTFL

Great video, I was wondering why there have been endless minor and severe delays for the last two weeks - due to a shortage of trains. I only found out when I asked a station staff member that this was because lots of trains are being taken out of service to refurbish them. Just a shame this has not been explained to passengers who have no idea why these endless daily delays/problems are happening. If people knew why - they might not be so annoyed - but its still going to mean a sub par service for months!!
Surely this can't have been planned given that doing it over Christmas is just plain stupid. It would be nice if Geoff questioned the leader of the project about this whilst he had her on camera.
This is not how you refurbish trains.
I have not heard of such methods of refurbishing rolling stock in other cities in such quantities that it leads to sheer shortage of those rolling stock.
@@dozenazer1811happens all the time, we had this problem in Boston for years
I can't believe how fast time has gone by. I can remember the 92 stock brand new! I'm very pleased they're sticking around for a good while yet however!
Looks better, the Central Line was starting to feel shabby and old compared to the newer stock. That said, the overwhelming worst problem is how hot it gets down there. I know it's not easy to solve and they have plans, but it has entered the emergency zone with London getting so horribly hot _every_ year now
It feels old
I've never been to London, or even the UK, but I love the 1992 stock so much. That accessible spot looked really good!!
Most informative! 09:24 sad the doors have already been vandalised...
That probably wasn't refurbished at all
It looks like they didn’t bother to wash off old graffiti
Yeah it’s looks very old so they probably couldn’t clean it off
It looks like they upgraded the graffiti font 👨🎨 Nice touch!
Couldn't even be arsed to clean the graffiti but yet lets all get excited over a new moquette and a digital visual update and a new motor.
The dot matrix will be nice especially for when unsure where the train goes when on a branch but the moquette is quite… grey. Hopefully it'll be a little quieter in the tunnels!
What makes it a bit eerie for me is that that first 1992 Tube stock entered service a couple of weeks before I was born! 😳
I’ll add to that… the propulsion equipment was produced by Brush, I think for ADtranz, and I costed the traction motors (LT130), when I first started working there. I’m still at Brush.
Or four months before I was 40, when, of course, life begins! I couldn't see anything wrong with the trains they replaced, which I, indeed, remembered having been themselves brand new.
@@allenwilliams1306That must be weird. I’m not at that age yet. The 92 stock was being introduced 2 years when I was born in 94 but I still remember my first ever time using the 96 stock when I was about 4 years old and how new they seemed. They still seem modern to me despite being near their mid life.
I will tell you what is more eerie. I worked on the Hainault line thirty years before you were born and the stations are exactly the same as they were then.
Hi Aussie fan here. Just want to wish u are a great Christmas and thank u for all the programs u made in 2023. Your programs are essential viewing in our household! Regards David Jones
I went on one of the first tests a few weeks ago and what excitement! Adrian’s voice makes the trains sound so futuristic. I will absolutely miss the washing machine motors and Emma’s voice, but it’s a welcome upgrade.
Welcome upgrade? Explain why the doors are still stained with graffiti?
@@coxallk32 Obviously they’re working on making sure the upgrades actually work first before refreshing the rest of it.
shame it has a upset alot of people in the mean time
I don’t think the old ones sound like a washing machine at all.
Very knowledgeable and nicely excited representative in charge, thanks a lot!
have to hope they have less nauseous announcements on the new tube for london - i get the reasoning behind the disjointed announcements, but I think they could have made them flow better. I find the current piccadilly or first gen overground announcements are calming whilst travelling, whilst these new central line ones in particular are going to make a journey more excruciating than the central line heat
The PATCO trains between Philadelphia and Camden and wickedly fast acceleration. Thet started service in 1969, and in recent years, got full rebuild by Alstom. Instead of replacing the motors, the motors were just refurbished. For central line, I suspect that the system that manages acceleration would have also changed (and would likely "play" a different sound or none at all.).
I’ll be missing the sound of the old DC motors for sure. Great memories.
But let’s be honest they needed a good upgrade!
Yep, the dc motors are much better than the ac.
@@ivanyap2002 well i reckon DC sounds better, AC is better for performance and efficiency!
@@robla85g18 That's completely not true. the 1996 stock is the best sounding of all chewb trains, and it's AC.
@@wta1518agree 96TS sounds the best. But the noise doesn’t come from the AC motors, it comes from the inverters feeding them.
@@robla85g18 I know that, but since the inverters are necessary to convert the DC third rail power to AC, they're still only found on AC trains.
Great video as always Geoff. Thank you for the time and effort you use, to keep them flowing.
Glad to see the 1992 Stock will be with us for a bit longer! I'll look forward to riding one of the refurbished trains.
I still have fond memories of the '62 rolling stock, from my days commuting to school. Have now left London and rarely travel on the underground, what I find jarring is the constant noise of announcements, we survived so well with silence. But having CCTV and visual displays are certainly worthwhile improvements
Good to see this upgrade. I remember the excitement of getting to ride the shiny new 92 stock trains with their original red moquette when they first ran on the Central Line, having ridden the 62 stock trains from when I started at school in 1967. The only negative comment I have about this upgrade is that I really like the announcements being in sync with the displays on the S8 stock trains whereas this appears not to be the case with these, Maybe a software update will fix it!
Any improvement is great. I had the pleasure of staying in Acton last year . The only service from hotel was via Central line. It got very unpleasant, day in and day out. That was a real miscalculation on my part. The upside is that the hotel was good and even though right on the Underground line, you could not hear those clunky trains. The moquette is lively and fun
What's so unpleasant about it? I think they're great
@@AndreiTupolev two things, Acton is an extremely unpleasant place to stay anywhere and the Central line trains have had a budget refurb. Internal doors are still a state, the panels are falling off by the drivers cab and they cant even be arsed to clean off the graffiti. Lets not dress this up to be something its not.
@@coxallk32 I honestly do wonder that given the cost of the refurbishment as now hit 500 million pounds, whether it would have made more sense to replace 1/3rd of the trains instead. May be slightly more as the manufacturers made clear the more TFL orders, the lower the cost per train will be.
An then use the old trains as spares to keep the rest going. Acquiring new trains as TFL could afford them.
@@AndreiTupolevAnnouncements are obscenely noisy, and annoyingly repetitive.
Why do I honestly love the new moquette more than the old one😩
Because you can’t get any worse than the current ones…

Sadly this one and the Elizabeth ones look atrocious.
Yes! Flooring factory tour. Maybe a visit to shop where they are being re-fitted too?
Hi come on we got to do this hi what's ur name oh never mind its William Wallace hi from William Wallace hahhahaha its weird
I used to live on Heathstan Road in East Acton where the trains ran along the back of the gardens (sadly the housing blocks I once knew have since been demolished and rebuilt)
I used to sit on the edge of the window in my bedroom and watch the trains go by. I lived on the second floor so had a decent view of the trains... the westbound trains ran on top of an embankment for the best view, the esstbound trains partly hidden as they entered the dip to criss cross under the westbound line heading towards White City. I still remember the sounds of the trains on the track there... Passing wesrbound trains produced a very unusual, non-symmetrical sound along the tracks given the axles would obviously be very symmetrical by design!
Biggest memory was seeing the then-new 92 stock trains running with the older 62 stock trains. Very nostalgic but also sad that my favourite tube stock train at the time was being phased out. I would have been about 8 years old at the time they started running the 92s
Finally, upgrading / updating the Central Line trains. I was there in October and rode the Central Line each day for a week. Every seat had collapsed seats, you just went down to the base. These look really nice.
It all looks great, but I really wish they did something about temperature inside , especially during summer months. It’s obviously not a small upgrade, and I’m not sure if it is actually possible to upgrade it, unless you do brand new trains, but the fact that they did those little improvements means that it will be unbearably hot for quite a while, because next stage of development won’t be any time soon
The curved window thing must be a late-80s early-90s design thing - we have exactly those windows on the upper deck of the “Tangara” trains in Sydney Australia. It didn’t go out of fashion so much as “it’s too hard to do” - so I miss it when I get newer trains. Strangely parallel story in London. It’s nice to be able to sit in the seat and see straight up.
I will missed those big windows when they are eventually replace by the new tube for London trains.
I used to love the Central line trains as a child because your reflection towards the top of the window would be upside down. I found that amusing.
I use to end seeing sweet wrapper float over the air vents. @@metromodernism
@@metromodernism Me too! I still do.
These units are so much better looking than the new tube trains about to be rolled out.
It’s all about the glazing. The new trains appear to have a “small window” problem.
I was down in London for the day yesterday but, didn't get a chance to ride the new refurbished Central line The shuttle service. The 1992 tube stock refurbishment looks much better with priority area for wheelchair users and I like the new announcement. I will try out the new refurbishment central line in the new year when I go up to London. Brilliant footage Geoff 👍.
Thanks for another interesting video Geoff. Thanks also to Colette for her input.
I assume the combination of the reliability issues and this upgrade is the reason that the Central line is currently permanently at least Minor Delays. Hope they rollout quickly
8:42 The Central Line operates ATO/ATP, which does not require tripcocks, so the trains are not fitted with them when operating in normal service. The Piccadilly line operates tripcock/trainstop signalling. The 1992 Stocks were delivered with tripcocks before ATO/ATP. When they were removed, some were kept around in the event that they needed to be moved along a tripcock line. When the 92s are moved to Acton they are fitted with tripcocks, not removed.
Hi Geoff, wonder why they did not paint the doors, they still have graffiti on them ?
Very nice moquette! Fits again with the red poles like the original did
Loving the content Geoff! Keep it up ❤
I think the videos where you, Geoff, are visibly excited and have a lot of love for the train du jour are the most enjoyable to watch. Love your vids - thank you (-:
Nice video, the refurbishment really looks nice
There is a lot to be said for refurb, because the basic train should be good for 60 years. Refurb provides the opportunity to remedy faults in the original design, whereas new trains come with a whole lot of new faults which come to light over the first few years in service.
Thank you for the video Geoff that was very interesting and great information. ❤
Love the new refurbishment but I also like the janky feel of the old one
Improvements are all great, but kinda disappointing that there's no air conditioning. Can't believe we're in 2023 and one of the most unbearably hot lines won't get trains with AC until at least 2040. And yes yes, I know the tunnels also need cooling too, but that could be being worked on during the time these trains are in operation, so might've been a good idea to at least future proof these.
Hi, mate. Good to be back with you again. My hearing has actually improved but I love your subtitles. Noticed a bit of graffiti already on the INSIDE of one of the doors, sadly. Hullo from Australia.
What a lovely, enthusiastic lady Colette is
Thanks for another great video.
Yes, those handrails above the doors were grey. I don't travel on the Central Line often, but I found that very disconcerting when you want to grab something and it's 'camouflaged' so you can't see it. The other lines have these in contrasting colours.
I'm disappointed to see the graffiti at 9:40. I would have hoped they were able to clean that off.
Great video Geoff as always! I live in East London so I will definitely be taking a ride on one of these trains next year- my video schedule is packed 😅
Love the trains!
I watch your videos.
geoff has to reply
Great Video Geoff! Interesting that Wallace & Sewell didn’t design the new Moquette on the refurbishment. Personally I’d love to see The Jaqueline Groag Moquette on some format on TfL rolling stock. Colette came across very well in interview.
Funny to think that the 1962 Stock that was on the Central Line before these, after 30 years was withdrawn and replaced by the 1992 stock..... These will have to keep going for at least another 10 years, if not more!
Your content is very niche and yet quite relaxing ngl
Good. They look and sound nice. As things stand I'd rather take a longer route than use the central line below ground. This should make the line more tolerable. Better lighting and the installation of CCTV will help a lot.
I am sad. I love the new seating moquette, and while I understand the need for reliable motors, I already miss the hum of the motors which were unique to the 92s and I don’t particularly like the in-train announcements -Feels as robotic as the NYCT.
Shame they don't have those nice LCD information screens (like on the new Piccadilly Line trains or the Elizabeth line trains), but I guess the dot-matrix screens are alright
i wonder if they got them cheap from the supplier.
The shapes in the moquette look like visual nods to Underground roundels, and the diamond used on station signs by the Metropolitan Railway (reproduction versions can be seen at Moorgate). But the diamond logo was never used by the Central London Railway; I don't think it ever had a logo as such. So maybe the diamonds in the Central Line moquette are just a coincidence - although I'd say Underground design concepts are too carefully thought out for that.
I was hoping you'd make a video about this! Was not disappointed!
The moquette is superb, the trains look superb, the announcements are horrendous, too many, too frequent
That woman explained everything brilliantly. Good at her job.👍😊🇮🇪🇬🇧
Does look like a great improvement for the central line. I wonder if they will still be exceptionally loud in places (the area around Leytonstone seemed to be really bad for that when I took a rare visit that way this week.)
Great video Geoff! In London a week or so ago travelled on a Sunday (bad idea) Elizabeth Line from Reading to Ealing Broadway (engineering work) then Central Line into City and would have been great on the upgraded train ! Definitely a refurbishment long overdue surprised they didn’t invest in new trains!? 😊
Would love to see a factory tour of where the moquette and the floor is made¡
Thanks for a great year of videos and wishing you a Happy Christmas and more adventures in 2024
Life is just better with trains. Thanks Geoff!
I'm never ever up in Woodford/Hainult area apart from about 1 week a year when I work on a performance up there but I had to take the shuttle/loop service on Monday to get there and it was one of the new trains. I didn't even know they were coming but it was a great surprise. Also it looks like the doors have already been vandilised at 9:24 :(
Thanks Geoff, nice review! Just one thing, LU Metro Trains are made up of 'cars' and not carriages. Sorry! that's probably the nerd in me! As a retired Central Line driver I can confirm that! As to why? I've never truly known that myself. Its possibly because they are 'Metro Trains' and/or that they are actually multiple electrical units which give them that designation. Maybe somebody knows another reason as to why?
Amazing Stuff Geoff. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I wonder when the transport museum will be selling sofas covered in that moquette
I'm gonna need the socks
Ah yes, my commuting route! Not my most favourite stock but definitely a specialty of their own.
I like how the new accessibility area uses divider panels that are in the same colour with the current (old) panels, yellowish and dark brownish instead of being modernly white. Blends in well!
Probably my 4th favourite
1st=96
2nd=95
3rd=s stock
4th=92stoxk
5th is met cammel units
Not really a fan only 09 stock as they sound trash at speed
The Central Line refurb sounds like a Victoria Line train in induction/traction! Very nice! And welcome, Adrian's voice!
No, it sounded more like S Stock
Use similar traction motors I think. I think it sounds similar but not the same from videos, it sounds a bit milder.
Woodford, where I lived as a toddler in the 60's and when I fell in love with the Tube. Dad used to take me for regular rides to Leytonstone and back, and to Loughton and back at weekends. 😢
Every Geoff Marshall NPC Nerd: "VOICEOVER MAN BAD!"
Adrian: "Woodford station go brrrrrrrrrr"
Going to miss the iconic old sound
This seems like a great upgrade and much needed for the Central line.
Edit: The inner doors are scuffed 😮
First of all, it still looks like the same height, and one of the common complaints about old central line trains is that it's too short for a lot of people. Second, apart from priority seating and space for wheelchairs and baby prams (which is great but also a standard?!), the seats look exactly the same except newer fabric. What about aircon or better ventilation? Central line is unimaginably hot and stuffy during summer, causing people to faint and fall ill. What is the point of these new trains if they can't resolve the major issues with the central line? Spending money for nothing. Even if it's not as noisy, it will be noisy when it pulls into the impossible curve that is Bank. The real test of how noisy or squeaky it is would be when these trains get into Bank 😂 all these stations you're riding have a straight track, of course it shouldn't be noisy if it's a new train. Also at 9:37, am I seeing graffiti already on the new carriage doors? Jokes. Finally, voice announcements on a train is a standard. Having a clear display of where the train is going, its final destination, what is the next stop etc - no upgrade on that then? This upgrade is so jokes, and how much is tfl spending on this? 😂😂😂
Thank you for showing the dedicated wheelchair space
Really can now see how TfL is bringing the Tube into the next few decades. '92 stock refurbed, '23 stock coming soon and then they have to address the Bakerloo line and eventually move on to the Northern and Jubilee lines even though the last two are still good
Geoff i would guess the flooring is Altro Transflor Motus. you can tour the altro factory in letchworth.
For 30 years old they aged quite well. And as a tall person - 2m02 - I appreciate the design of the curved windows :)
I was also thinking how well they’ve aged - 30 years is a long time! (and I remember riding them when they were new…)
They have aged well in design but not structurally. It seems like trains from the 90’s in the uk are aging well design wise because that’s when design seems to have changed a lot but new trains design since then hasn’t changed too much.
Remember travelling to my Saturday job on the 92 stock when they were being introduced in the early 1990s.
Good to see a update on the central line i really like the new seat moquette
“A lot of people get excited about new moquettes… mainly me…” 😂
it just looks as good as 1996 stock interior
5:12 I thought you were going to talk to Betty Boo lol. Never understood why the curved Windows weren't used on the newer stocks (Yes I know why on the 95/96 stock). Lovely video as always
curved windows break easily, especially the class 442 once in south west trains
As part of my work I have travel from Stratford to Chancery Lane . When I returned back to Stratford I was asked by colleagues what Ithaught of the the journey I said it was the noisiest tube trainnisy environment I had been in and was surprised some passengers were having a conversation in such a noisy evirnonment. Most of my colleagues live in London or completed the journey many times and are used to it.
Thats a great idea Geoff, take us to the flooring factory please
I think this is a great idea on TfL's part. There's no need to buy new trains if you can overhaul the ones you already have and genuinely extend their life.
Right to Repair is important. If they were John Deere trains they'd have some strange error code appearing (which simply means you were meant to have replaced them by now).
Overhauling the trains won't fix many of the problems with the Central Line. Track noise in the tunnels is dreadful, and the carriages are not walk through.
@@owensmith7530 The lack of walkthrough carriages I appreciate is a problem, but I don't see how the trains have anything to do with the tunnel noise levels. That has to do with the tracks.
@@grand.central And the horrendous noise is the worst problem with the Central Line, so they should be fixing that not fiddling around the edges with the trains.
And no air conditioning for longer…
Oh Geoff, you missed a Grange Hill flying sausage gag. Such a missed opportunity 😂😂
looks amazing
Interesting that not much has changed but definitely a decent improvement
man its a real shame the new dot matrix displays block off part of the panoramic windows, that was one of my fav things about the '92 stock :(
The 92’s announcements and motor noise were my favourite and I was really sad to hear that they’re going, but I’m kind of at peace with it as it was needed. Those motors were getting very unreliable and the announcements were sometimes hard to hear in tunnels
Wow the new motors are much quieter, once you hear the old stock pull in it really gives you the contrast.
Finally, these Central Line trains have upgraded, and this new refurbished line is much better than the old 1992 Stock. Honestly, I have to say that the new announcements for the trains is the worst. But, atleast the new Central Line is not cramped anymore and is more spacious.
Great Video Geoff will need to ride on these train
"Please mind the gap between the train and the platform."
Geoff you should get a job working with the TFL. You would do great
Doing what? Museum 🤔
I was a station foreman at Roding Valley in 1962 and have lived in Australian since 1964. I cannot help noticing that the stations have not changed one bit.
Thanks Geoff....but did I notice some new graffitti as well ??
I do like the refurbishment, It really suits it!
Great vid Geoff! Keep it up. Also have they added air condition for the summer?
Haha wishful thinking. This was done so they have an excuse to not upgrade the central line trains to the newer stock... forget about AC on the central line for at least another decade
Looking forward to riding it one day
I ride this line every day to get to work. Look forward to travelling on the upgraded trains. It looks good 👍🏾
its a terrible service at the moment.
You’ll be waiting a very, VERY long time then
Its good knowing the audio announcement is projected with a clear and concise voice. The one at Liverpool Street on the Circle Line has been changed to a woman who mumbles and is very hard to understand. They need to get Adrian to re-do the announcements.
