Just had my first litter this year. Only have 9 snakes but it still cost me $60 or so if they all eat. So I'm getting out ahead of it and can sell or freeze. I do have an enormous deep freeze in the room. Also give them treats or granola bars and other veggies
No ASFs in Utah, however we are relocating to Colorado once this pandemic allows, I know I can get them there and plan to feed ASFs then. ....nice shirt! 🤘🏻
Lisa Richmond - it depends on where you live. If you’re in the US, some states don’t allow them. If they are legal where you live you can sometimes find them in pet stores.
Great video mate! Completely agree. I still feed a mixture of ASF and rats but that’s mainly because I can’t breed quite enough Multis with my current rodent facility. My breeder females do great on ASF 👍🏻
great video gavin, i started breeding my own asf's due to ur videos on them. was hard to find though as hardly anyone in scotland working with them. i tried getting them as pets years ago when i kept rodents but were never available.
Trying to get into these after the virus outbreak is calmed down. I have couple snakes got from someone gettn rid of their collection hardly won't eat. Can't find ASF around where I'm at and can't get them anywhere do to the Lacy act

I feel like seller/ breeders need to diverse or make clear at very least that snakes only ever ate -- . Nothing worse than getting snake spoiled to ASF. Just hard to get alot of areas normally not impossible but definitely rarer. Of course buyer should be asking anyway but a lot get excited and never think about it untill they have a spoiled snake on hands lol. Great video man!
This is something I've been thinking about recently breeding rats. I have a small collection, hand full of boas, a pair of white lipped pythons. And with it getting a hassle to get hold of might be an empty market in my area. Multi I've not tried feeding because of the size however I am surprised how far a 50g multi can go. Very tempting for the dumerils that are fussy and usually need chick or quail.
I would love to see an experiment with two hatchlings one feed strictly rats and the other asf and see the weight difference over a span of time. Of course you would need a couple different snakes to test this on🤔
Didn't see or even know that some snakes poo like bad like dogs. I got a het pied and a Mojave from a lady and she kept on about one that poo like a dog and I just thought that's crazy til I had some that do.

Depends on your local microclimate. As a species they do need warmer temps, room temperature is fine but an unheated shed, especially in winter, will just kill them.

Last year I started to feed my 6 mth old ball python ASF after watching your channel.He feeds on one weekly but defecates about once every 2 months!when he was on weiner rats he ate weekly and defecated about every two weeks.He is growing realy nicely and like you say there is no smell at all from him.Is this normal for the pooing though?I was worried he was constipated.

Know im fairly new to bp but if youre going to equate asf to steak than why not the freshness of live or fresh killed over f/t? You know youre going to lose nutrients to the freezing process? Now i get is way more convenient, but is it as healthy for our animals?

ASF's are the most desirable food, imo, however, breeders like Justin Kobylka has nothing but the humble rat because, as far as I know, it's illegal to keep them in his state. As for colour, we part ways there because genes play a bigger part. When I did breed them they got sow rolls but they always got mixed seeds, fruit and veg daily, not just as treats. I really need a proper rat breeding stand but I'm utterly hopeless with my hands. How many breeding pairs of multis do you have for how many snakes? Great video, Gavin. Interesting as always.
I did a split clutch with a friend of mine a few years back, he had 3 snakes from the clutch and feed them on rats on the same day with the same size rodent and I did the same with my 3 but on Multis..... The results convinced me that Multis work better..... Growth rate, colours feeding response etc..... All snakes involved in the test was normal double het for albino/pied so no visible morph involved...... If your breeding normal rats then it's 1 breeding female for every snake.... If it's Multis then it's 2 breeder females per snake as Multis take longer to grow up. Thanks for tuning in Stan 👍🏼

If I can even get someone to make me a few racks for breeding multis then that is definitely the way to go. As I said I did breed multis but the little fekkers always escaped and cost me a fortune in replacing cables to my phone, heaters, thermostats, routers ....god, man, they were costing me a fortune LOL. I purchased a new colony of asf 3 females and one male and my three females killed the male I do have one that just gave birth but now I’m out a breeder male what is your advice on what to do should I wait till the babies are able to be on there own and create new colony out of that and feed the adult females to my ball pythons I’m just new and trying to figure it out
i feed asf aswell. i find you take a 100gr asf compare to a 175gr rat to the same snake... the poo from the asf is roughly 10gr and the rat poo is 100 gr. so the rat is a lot of waste.. be like us paying for a big plate of food but throwing half out.
Hi Balls2u. Can I ask your opinion please. I have a male BP 3.5 years old brought him from a baby. He lives in a 3.10 × 2 ft vivarium with two main hides one at each end of vivarium with one end being the hot end. His also has various little bits to hide in throughout vivarium. Now for the question hehe. In the last year or so I have selected to wait until I can see his predator instinct (me and my wife call it pouncy, like he is ready for a prey to walk bye) before I feed him. This could be anything from 4 - 8 weeks sometimes more. I also like for him to pass his last meal before I will feed him again. Looking at your video above I would say his a good weight, looks healthy to my inexperienced knowledge 🤦♂️ But I'm I doing the right thing? Should I in fact offer him more regularly? The current way I feed him, he always takes the medium size rat. However after 1-3 days after first meal he is pouncy again & basically takes two medium size rats per meal And then like I mentioned I wait for the next pouncy look which can be as long as 8 weeks or more. I feed mine mainly multis she is a picky feeder, ive tried the stubborn route of feeding just common rats but she refuses. So now i mix it up to keep her feeding but i find multis expensive, do you sell or is it breed to just feed? But she LOVES multis for sure!

So it makes me want to research my group of kings, milks on what type of rodents they eat in there natural setting. So thanx for your food for thought, pun intended, lol. Het Gavin, I’m seeming to run into some trouble bc the African soft furs , I only have a 100sq ft room so I’ve been breeding my own rodents in the same room as my snakes for a few years now, not really having any troubles, but some of my snakes just stopped eating once I brought some ASF rats in the room that I’m starting a colony with, have you ever had any trouble bc the smell of the ASF when you were feeding your snakes both normal rats and ASF RATS?
I have had similar issues. I breed asf because of the mild smell but also feed ft normal rats. Some of my snakes tend to not want to eat consistently and have had similar thoughts. They may smell the asf and want that source. Maybe its like smelling the char grill of Burger king all day and having to settle for something less haha
I have heard they don't like or do well in the cold as well, being from Africa that makes sense. However, I picked up a trio of ASFs a couple months ago at about 10 weeks old. It's been between 40-55⁰ F in my garage and they had their first litter of 10 a week ago. Just a data point for you.
My only issue with asf is that they grow slow. It's hard for me to breed them consistently to an adult weight to feed my larger snakes. I try to only feed my holdback males, some females asf. I transition them at a certain weight to normal rats because it's cheaper to buy and feed over their entire growth span.

I hate feeding frozen thawed. I think it’s just disgusting. I noticed when I fed frozen thawed rodents my snakes would refuse or go off food all together. I’ve never tried asf’s. Maybe I’ll give them a go. Thanks Gavin
Mason R I feed some of my snakes pre-killed and my other snakes take live. I don’t like f/t cause it smells bad and it takes hours just to feed a few snakes.

Asf aren't in the wild in Africa they are an African lab rat, this is coming from the locals in Africa I know this video is old one but still relevant for those to know if coming across this video

ASF rats are not the natural food source of the Ball Python. Their native ranges don't overlap, ASFs are native to Southern Africa, Balls Western and Central. They may be closer to their natural food source, but a Ball Python would almost never encounter the ASFs we feed in captivity in the wild.

So your large females don't seem still hungry on such a smaller rodent? Do you have to feed them more often?

A couple of my Ball Pythons have issues feeding consistently without ASF rats anywhere on the premises.
Why are they called multi’s in the U.K.?
A very late response its because they have a lot more mammary glands than other mice/rat type things. It comes from the name multimammate

I hate feeding frozen thawed. I think it’s just disgusting. I noticed when I fed frozen thawed rodents my snakes would refuse or go off food all together. I’ve never tried asf’s. Maybe I’ll give them a go. Thanks Gavin
Mason R I feed some of my snakes pre-killed and my other snakes take live. I don’t like f/t cause it smells bad and it takes hours just to feed a few snakes.

First off... Washing hands after every animal encounter is advised and don't drink the urine.... Simple really

Some states ban ASF's
ASF rats are not the natural food source of the Ball Python. Their native ranges don't overlap, ASFs are native to Southern Africa, Balls Western and Central. They may be closer to their natural food source, but a Ball Python would almost never encounter the ASFs we feed in captivity in the wild.

That's a lie people in Africa have never heard of asfs they actually come from labs in South Africa but they arnt out in wild
