You should try reacting to FIGHT CLUB if you haven't already seen it, and Forrest Gump too.
Putting down that horse was an act of kindness. 90% of americans will agree. Cogburn was an experienced outdoorsman, he pushed Blackie to his limits because every 1/4 mile it went was closer to saving Maddie. Maddie was bitten by rattlesnakes, particularly venomous snakes found in the southwest. When he cut her he was sucking out what venom he could to delay death. He knew eventually Blackie would give all that he could and he would have to put him down. He believed the price was worth it. Sometimes Europeans are so strange to Americans. Things that are confusing to you are black and white to us. Sometimes we do not see things the same way . I can assure you, however, we don't mean ill will. We are this way for a reason even if it is sometimes bewildering to you.
The cutting/sucking technique is an old wives tale (doesn't work), but it's realistic that he would have tried it. (People believed it worked.)
All that being said, the rattlesnake scene is a bit ... melodramatic, but whatever. Say least they didn't throw in quicksand. Still a fantastic film.
I don't think its an American vs European thing (sans maybe not being familiar with rattlesnakes). America isn't the only place where people ride horses or have knowledge and skills for living outdoors. I think it has more to do with the fact that this is young woman living in a very modern age that's often far removed from any of that, especially if she lives in a cosmopolitan area that's far removed from rural life. So she just doesn't have the life experience to get that Cogburn was doing what was necessary in that scene. I'm sure there are young American girls too from cities like LA, NYC etc that might have similar reactions because they didn't grow up around horses or have the need to develop any real working knowledge of the outdoor.
@@t0dd000 The rattlesnake scene isn't melodramatic; it's not in there just to tug at your emotions. Its absolutely integral to the main theme of the film and the consequence of her character. Mattie was a head strong, willful person that was determined to avenge her father in the manner that she saw fit, which included her participation in it. It was that willful desire that lead her that situation in the first place and to pull the trigger and kill Chenny without much thought or hesitation. Which, in turn, leads to her falling in that pit, getting bit, and losing her arm. As she says in the beginning: "You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. There is nothing free except the grace of God." The rattlesnake sequence is the cornerstone that ties the whole movie together.
Personally I think its more just a sign of the times and mindset towards horses. Back then they were strictly working animals, they were primarily a means of convayance, thats it. If you had to, you rode one into the ground. Human life over a horses. Nowadays, horses are, unless you ranch or live very rural, primarly pets or sporting animals, so they are viewed differently. Less as a tool and more as a "soul" I guess you could say.

The sad ending makes for a way better movie, however I guess it’s a natural reaction in that moment to say when you’ve been rooting for characters for two hours and then that happens. Don’t take it too literal 😂

Yeah, the river crossing, the horse was swimming. They did it right. Once they hit deep water, the rider slides back and off the saddle to take their weight off the horse. You hold onto the back of the saddle or the horses tail in some cases. Once the horse can reach the bottom again, you pull yourself back up and on before he gets to shallow water. They did the scene, right!
The river crossing scene is a movie classic scene. The music and the action is iconic.
This movie is great at showcasing how easy it is to pass judgment on a person's character, nuances either eccentric or crude but the true character of a person is always more accurately assessed in crisis, when things hit the fan. Both this version and the original 1969 version are great. Loved this movie and very much enjoyed your reaction.
It looks like the horse is swimming because the horse is swimming. Horses can swim, you know.
If you ride a horse too hard you can cause it to die of exhaustion… the horse was having a heart attack and that’s why he shot it…

This isn't really a remake. It's a separate movie adaption of Charles Portis' novel that doesn't draw anything from the 1969 movie adaptation. Calling it a remake is like saying that the San Francisco Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker" is a remake of the Bolshoi ballet's.
I have read the book and seen both movies. This movie is probably a little closer to the atmosphere of the book. But, the 1969 version sticks closer to the story in the book, until the end. The 1969 version brightens up the end a little whereas this 2010 version sticks to the book ending. Both versions are really good each in their own way.
I had no idea it was based on a novel (guess I missed that), but it is indeed very weird to me that people are getting so upset about me watching this version, as it is indeed not a remake then, just another version.
@@LarissaZeeuwe Sometimes, when people choose a favorite out different versions of a thing, they feel a need to validate their choice as being the most valid choice, so they they take an adversarial/antagonistic view of choices that are different from their own. Sometimes people love their favorite choice so much that's it's a big disappointment when someone else doesn't choose it. That disappointment then causes them to become upset.
Speaking of the different versions of "True Grit," the courtroom scene that introduces Rooster has the same dialogue, but the two performances deliver the lines with a very different personality and mood behind them. When you talked about liking or not liking characters, it made me curious about how your feelings might be changed by different performances of the same characters.
Idk how deep the water was but so you know, horses are great swimmers even in deep water. They can also swim with a rider because both you and the horse are somewhat buoyant. I rode horses all the time growing up, loved trail rides on my uncle and grandfather land. Great reaction Larissa!

The best western ever made was the mini-series "Lonesome Dove". The quality is up there with "Band of Brothers." Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones give the performances of their lives!
And Duvall played Lucky Ned Pepper in the original True Grit.
The first time I saw this movie I stopped using contractions for a week.
A horse is very able to swim even with a small rider.
So you asked why the hanged body might be considered valuable. There are a few reasons. 1.) It could be the body was of an outlaw with a wanted dead or alive bounty on his head and all that was required to cash in on it was a positive identification. 2.) Even if the guy wasn't an outlaw someone might know who he is and next of kin might pay to have the body returned to them so they could give it a proper burial. 3.) Complete human skeletons were hard to come by in a time period when no one was donating their bodies to science, medical schools paid small fortunes for a fully intact corpse. 4.) Someone might be willing to pay something for a body to use as a warning by hanging a sign around its neck that said something along the lines of "This is what happens to people who cheat at cards/trespass/steal/murder/cause trouble/etc."
So a couple of actors you didn't appear to recognize Josh Brolin (Tom Channey ). Josh also voiced Thanos in the Avengers movies and was Cable in Dead Pool 2. Barry Pepper (Ned Pepper) was also the sharp shooter in Tom Hanks group in Saving Private Ryan. I'm always surprised by like that Europeans have for the Old American West and it's tales.
Steinfeld most recently played Kate Bishop in HAWKEYE and will probably be the lead in the New Avengers. She was nominated for an academy award for TG. Second youngest Oscar nom to Tatum O'Neil.
And she SHOULD have won, but didn’t. Should actually have been nominated for best actress, not best supporting actress. Mattie Ross is the main character of the movie, not a supporting character.

I think my favorite part has nothing to do with the plot. It's the old drunken gunslinger picking up his dirty, bent out of shape hat and putting it back on. I have a stetson that's over a decade old from my cavalry days in the US Army. It's beaten and battered but it's the one i wore in a war zone. Never intend to replace that battered old hat.
Dead bodies may be worth money because there is usually someone looking for that person. And that has value.
Its amazing how people cant seem to understand that not shooting the horse would have been to leave im die slowly and probably be eated alive by the desert criters. Modern views on animals blind everyone to true cruelty.
This version of True Grit is a remake of the 1969 version starring John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. The endings are a bit different. Both movies are really good.
This version is truer to the source novel than the John Wayne version.

Sigh, Europeans, country side is NOT tame. Leaving an exhausted horse is leaving a free meal for wolves or a bear or whatever. And they will not kill it before starting to eat it. That was a mercy killing.

@@t0dd000 When a horse is ridden to that level of exhaustion, they will literally die, either due to respiratory or heart failure. They aren't made to be sprinters over that long of a distance, and pushing them to that extent takes a substantially greater toll on them than exhaustive exertion takes on the average human. Trained horse will often easily be pushed into ignoring their own physical limits and needs, and there are plenty of cases of people who've made the mistake of pushing their horse past that limit in a race and the horse paid for it with their life. This was definitely not just Hollywood exploiting a trope, in the context of the movie, the horse would have lain there in agony, slowly dying if predators didn't get them first. I think a major point of that scene is to illustrate that even though Rooster is a brutal man living in a brutal world, he wanted to minimize the suffering that he knew he had to inflict on the horse in order to save Mattie. www.besthorserider.com/running-a-horse-to-death/

In the novel, the Indian who was being hanged was allowed to speak. He tells the crowd he believes in Jesus Christ and he looks forward to seeing everyone in heaven. Then the crowd applauds.
This is the second movie based on the Charles Portis novel. The 1969 version starred John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, and Robert Duvall.
In those days it was not uncommon for a 14 year old to be married and maybe even a mother herself.

Fourteen was a different fourteen than today. People would have seen her as similar to how we see an 18 to 25 year old woman today... a woman but still a child.

If you'd like more depth into the American collective psyche via hollywood westerns I suggest Eastwoods ''Unforgiven'' and an oldie from John Wayne ''The Cowboys''. Both worth the time.
One of my favorite movies. Im a Canadian horseman & this movie has been a huge love of mine since it came out. I prefer it to the original to be quite honest
I favor this one, too. I do enjoy the first version with John Wayne, but the problem is that John Wayne only plays one character: John Wayne. Even when he took a more challenging role like Rooster Cogburn, he’s still John Wayne.
While Hailee was fantastic in the role, it was odd to hear people in the movie referring to her as being rather homely. But for a performance this good I can suspend my disbelief that she would be perceived as such.

One of the best Westerns I've ever seen. I saw the original True Gritt and I think this was done much better.

What some miss, I think you got it, is that when she told Rooster that she was looking for a man with True Grit, people think that he is the one with that attribute. But we learn throughout the course of the movie, It is Maddie who is the one with True Grit, the movie title is her. Great reaction.
I think true grit applies to all 3 of the protagonists.
Since you like Hailee Steinfeld, you should check out "The Edge of Seventeen" (2016). She got outstanding reviews for her lead performance in that film.

If you like Westerns, watch "Unforgiven." Another brilliant movie.
The dialogue in this movie provides a lot of details that you appear to miss due to your talking over it.
You need to see the original true grit with John wyane and Glenn campbell its the best even better the the 2010 remake.

This is a great movie. Haven't seen the original to be fair so can't compare the two that much but I have always enjoyed this more modern version. And Hailee Steinfeld bagged an Oscar nomination for this which was very impressive given how young she was at the time. Hope to see more movie reactions on TH-cam soon!
The original is the novel. This adaptation is closer to the source than the John Wayne version, which kind of replaces the moral of the book's story for a happy ending.

I was a big fan of the John Wayne version. This was so much better. I still like the original but this was so good.
Men aren't big on saying; "I love you." But we kill ourselves taking care of those we love.

Well made movie. Interesting it followed the original 1969 script almost exactly. But was updated in execution.
They both follow the original novel they are based on, but the 2010 version is closer to the novel.
Please pause the film when you comment as you're talking right over the dialogue and missing important things. Other than that, nice reaction!

it might be a little too plain of a synopsis but i think overall the message of the movie is how revenge is toxic. mattie had plenty of chances to turn away from the road of vengeance, seeing violence up close, needing to wield a gun to fend for her life but she chose to continue on until the end. she has tom chenney at gun point, he knows she will fire that rifle if he tries anything, yet she decides to shoot an unarmed man, not in the name of justice, but in the name of vengeance. as soon as she fires that shot her life spirals out of her control, culminating to her become old, bitter and with one less arm.
Or if not toxic, at the least revenge is costly. Old Mattie, narrating the opening of the film, says that nothing is free but the grace of God. Perhaps she learned that lesson by the price she paid to avenge her father.
She's also female Hawkeye!

Would be interesting to check out the john Wayne version but this one is closer to the book. A very good story. Interesting to see a young person's take. Really good book. Short read.

Would love to be able to mix and match the cast from this movie and the 1969 version. I think John Wayne was better as Rooster, and Robert Duvall as Lucky Ned Pepper and of course Strother Martin was just classic in the pony trading scene but poor Glen Cambell was as wooden as a dime store Indian as the Texas Ranger, Mat Damon is way better. Maddie is better in this version but Kim Darby wasn't bad. The scenery was more beautiful in the 69 movie. I think the new movie is better but not by much and the 1969 version is well worth a watch.
I once got roped into doing mock interviews with students to prepare them for applying for externships. Many students came from cultures that consider maintaining eye contact defiant or belligerent, and I talked to them about how the authority figures who would be interviewing them rose to their positions through aggressiveness and would consider not maintaining eye contact a sign of weakness or disregard.
Agreed that Matt Damon is the best Le Beouf, which is understandable given that Glenn Campbell was more of a musician than an actor. But I think Jeff Bridges is a far superior actor to John Wayne. No where near as iconic of course. But in terms of pure performance and acting chops, John Wayne was never about that and was always about the personality that he brought to his roles. Even in True Grit which was a bit different for him, I think you still very much see John Wayne in the performance. Where as Jeff Bridges is able to lose himself much more and become the character.
I think I also like the 1969 version slightly better with the Mattie character. As far as the actresses go, I think they both did a superb job. I just think the original film wrote Mattie with a bit more finesse; she feels more like a real teenage girl. In the 2010 version, I think they went a bit heavy handed in making the character as willful, determined, and single minded as possible. I mean she's still a great character and Hailee Stenfeild did a great job. But I think Kim Darby's version has a bit more humanity to her and feels more like a person you might actually come across in the world. The 2010 Mattie is written more to the service of the theme they're trying to present, and in doing so, she becomes a little unbelievable.

Larissa, sometimes I feel you don't understand men at all. Maddie was the daughter Rooster never had. He tried to push her away at first, she reminded him what he didn't have due to his failures at marriage, but she wormed her way into his heart...how could she not? Men have feelings too, sometimes they're buried very deep. We're brought up to hide our feelings, it's not considered ''manly''. Didn't say it was right, just that's the way it is. Things may be different in Scandinavia and Europe.
I'm sure she doesn't understand men.

The shot she did fire was a misfire that only wounded him because the powder was not dry. Rooster and LeBeof have modern cartridge firing guns. She has an old gun from the 1820's that her Dad had to shoot snakes and stuff. :)

In the 1969 version, Kinm Dary's Mattie told John Wayne's Rooster that the gun misfired at the crucial moment because "You loaded it improperly while in a state of drunkenness." I always found that line funny.
The fact that you choose this lousy version over the original with the great john wayne makes this an epic fail

You want to watch the original with John Wayne. He won his only Academy Award for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn with that movie (he should have gotten another for “The Shootist”, but that is for another time.
I Do Not Hate John Wayne, however I am not going to watch any of his movies unless there are real actors (like William Holden, James Stewart or even Elvis) to give the movie some merit. The “duke” as some like to call him had only one style, and he performed the same character the same way in every movie he ever made. I watched his movies while growing up in the 50s and 60s and perhaps I was burned out by his singular style, but I always went expecting him to give a spectacular performance and was always disappointed! The man was as close to being one dimensional as possible. So, save your praise, I for one don’t care for it.
