I've never finished a thru hike | Te Araroa preparation 🌳🏕️🌲 🥾

  • I’m going on a walk soon, it’s a long walk, actually, it’s a very long walk, about three thousand kilometres and is known as a thru hike and this will be my very first thru hike. Te Araroa is considered by some as one of the toughest thru hikes in the world due to it’s varied terrain and the weather that you’re likely to encounter along the way. Added to that are several hundred river crossings, lots of mud, days between resupply points - the longest being eight or nine days, numerous mountain passes, sandflies, wasps, miles of road walking, poorly maintained tracks and, yes I could go on.
So why? Why would I leave a perfectly comfortable lifestyle to endure all of that? Why when there’s easier thru hikes in other countries? What has motivated me to seek out the unknown, when the known is available, to challenge myself in this way?

Wow, I’d missed the announcement video (watching next). Love what you said about 80 mental energy the rest split between physical, financial and the weather. You have the right attitude. I’ll be watching your updates all the way, it will be an epic journey.

Thanks for your support Steve, it really is appreciated. I slipped the announcement video in as a Community Post as it was an irregular style for me 😀. Yea, that 80% is sure the hurdle 💪🥾🧠

You will not regret doing the trail, and you will meet up with so many nice people that give encouragement, advice and stories of there lives. I no this from experience as I've been section walking the ta.

Thanks for watching and sharing your experience 😀. I’m still busy planning, what’s been the biggest surprise for you on the trail so far? 🏕️🌳🥾

It's a Rollercoaster, you just have to strap in and trust the journey. And I'd suggest to set alarms to stop and eat during the day like at work. Very easy to just say just another hour and il stop, but mostly you just keep going. Then you just run your self down after a few days of less calorie intake. Can't wait to watch your walk. I'm only been section walking the south so far. Hope to see you out there.

That’s a great tip, thanks very much. I guess the headset of “this is now my job” and as you say, regular meal breaks. I’ve taken note of that as I’ve always been self-employed and as such, end up having lunch for example at 3pm, not ideal at the best of times, and certainly not when using so much energy 😅

Good on you Sharon for getting out there and giving it a go. You don’t know what is around the corner I always say don’t waste time and get out there and do what you want, you will learn, adapt and reposition along the way! Looking forward to seeing your updates 😊🌸💖

Thanks for watching, I like how you say, “learn, adapt and reposition along the way”. While I’m busy planning, I know that the plan will go west on Day 1 of 90 Mile Beach 🏖️. Bring it on 😁😁

@@FreewheelingKiwi I’m guessing you can do drop boxes along the way. Send yourself packages along the way to local post offices or a dairy. That will be a lot of fun! Will be fun meeting the locals along the way, I’m sure they will be lovely and hospitable 🌸💖 stay safe , Paulette

      Thanks Paulette 💚
I’m planning to do drop boxes the whole way so am busy experimenting with homemade dehydrated food. Town days will be a treat though to get some fresh veggies and fruit 🍌 🍎 🥦 🥕 oh, and the luxury of a mattress 🤩

@@FreewheelingKiwi yes I always crave fresh fruit especially in the trail. I usually carry one apple and that’s always a treat to look forward to eating. When I go to Tassie I think I might need to carry a few more. The apples are delicious in “Apple land” 🤣🌸💖

Yes it was Stef, such a neat place to go for a wander. The Lower Pack Track river was running too high for me to rock hop across though and I didn’t fancy wet feet 😆

Thanks so much for all your ongoing support 💚 Have you a favourite winter walk? I’m finding I need to be flexible with river’s high or tracks closed from storm damage. The Tuis are starting to be active again and so are the Kaka which is magical 🌲🌲🌳🌳🌲🌲

@@FreewheelingKiwi yes I have favorite walk. It was a time I stayed overnight in the Arthur's Pass Village. I hiked up Mt Aicken for the first time. The lush native Bush and scenery made up for the solid accent up the beautifully covered slopes. It was stunning 😍 I didn't quite reach the top because there was a part of a cliff face you had to climb. Anyone could have done it except me. I get vertigo and I knew I would fall had I tried. But I had lunch up there with as far as I could go with amazing views regardless.... So yes lol I'm not a mountaineer but a hiker and I found this particular track my favorite... 😍💚

But seriously, I have only done a few hikes... guessing what I needed to take with me. That's why I appreciated your episode on what to take, that bike bag of yours got my interest as it had so many compartments. But I have taken notes from you for future references. Particularly the tent, camping side of things. I haven't done that yet. Still a newbie 😅 But I have learnt so much from watching you as you go exploring ☺

    • @FreewheelingKiwi
      @FreewheelingKiwi  ปีที่แล้ว

That sounds magical with the bush and the reward of the views after the hard work. I love to just sit and watch from on high. The Te A passes through Arthur’s Pass, I’m not sure if it follows your track but there’ll be similarities to the bush I’m sure. It’s a stunning area, each time I’ve been there I’ve been fortunate to have stunning weather, such good luck. Thanks for sharing your favourite track, I’ll read up on it now 😀

I’m really pleased to hear that my videos have helped. Camping is great fun, you’ll find what you’re most comfortable with through a bit of trial and error and realising how heavy your pack is 😅. I’m a shocker for taking extra for warmth, being cold is one of my fears so I over compensate ☃️
