Understanding Hiker's Language 🌲🏕️🌲 Te Araroa Thru Hike

- Have you ever joined a new group and wondered if they were speaking a different language, some of it sounds sort of familiar but there seems to be acronyms and words used in context that are nothing like you’ve heard before?
As a group, hiker’s are no different and in this video, I’m going to explain what SOBO, NOBO and even HOBO stand for when used in a hiking context along with a whole lot of other hiker lingo.
I’ve chosen one of my favourite bush hikes as this video’s backdrop, this is the Mangamate Circuit in the Whirinaki Forest which I solo hiked over three challenging days in late winter. A highlight of this trip was hearing kiwi calling across the valley where I was camped deep in the forest, it was the first time I’d ever heard Kiwi in the wild and it was a magical moment.

Thanks for watching. Lol in reality I think I most likely qualify by Day 2 😅 The kiwi were magical, I was lying there in the dark, my coldest night ever, then first a morepork and then the kiwi started calling. It made it all so worthwhile 💚
That was fascinating, thanks Sharon. I had little idea there was so much hiker language! Growing up in Ngaruawahia, the Hakarimatas were our local trails (only roughly marked back then) & as kids we would look forward to "going bush" for the day.
Oh yes, we were all about going bush, ideally before Mum or Dad gave us a list of chores to do on a Saturday morning. We’d not return until dusk, tired and hungry and happy after all sorts of adventures 😀. I’ll be walking the length of the Hakarimatas in a couple of months 🤩
