Sailing Dinghy "Sciurus"

  • ...a 14 foot Lugsail Dinghy designed & built in 1987 by Richard Pierce and sailed here by the Pierce Family at the 2008 Toberonochy Boat Muster, Luing, Scotland after 'official' sailing was abandoned... the breeze was gusting 30kts according to Commander of the Fleet Brice Avery. The sail is reefed from 120sqft to 80....
Inspired by Arthur Ransome's books and sketches, Richard built many similar dinghies realizing that for everyone that wanted to race a National 12 or Merlin Rocket dinghy, there was probably a family who wanted to sail together in a more simply equipped boat, possibly taking the picnic and camping gear along too. (Richard also built and raced several 12s and Merlins).
Sciurus (a Common, or Red Squirrel in Latin) was so named as her home for many years was in Rusland, just a few hundred yards from Arthur Ransom's grave. In the 1980's the red squirrel was becoming a rare sight in the Lake District, rather like Lugsailed wooden dinghies!
Sciurus is well travelled... She has sailed the 70 miles overnight from Craobh Haven to Fort William to the start of the Great Glen Raid (which took another week to reach Fort Rose, another 120 miles). She travelled to Southern Sweden for the Blekinge Raid atop a VW Transporter van! She regularly appears at traditional/wooden boat gatherings, and always performs well among significantly larger boats.
On the strength of this little film clip (thanks to John Widdaker!) Richard is confident to offer the design to other builders, along with his 18'6 design 'Scarlet' and 12'6 'Beachnut', both of which have proved themselves over the years. Recent projects include modern adaptations of Albert Strange's Yawl Cherub 2 and The Mackinaw Boat Heritage 23 +44 (0) 1852 314 119 (Scotland UK) rfhpierce@aol.com 001 646 522 3038 (NY USA)

Very nice sailing... Crew of four on a boat without a keel & one reef in the main, whitecaps. Real dinghy sailing as few these days ever experience!

I watched this video many times while I was choosing my boat. I ended up buying the Cornish Cormorant 12 ft with a balanced lugsail. It doesn't matter how many times I read articles saying that a balanced lug is not a "second class" rig, the fact that it is such a minority choice gave me cause for concern, but this video is part of what convinced me to make the leap of faith. Thank you.

Pleased to hear you find the video inspirational! I have designed & built many 12'6", 18'6" and 23'00" standing-lug rigged boats in the UK & USA and have come to the conclusion that correct sail camber & twist is crucial... one well known raceboat sailmaker insisted on making lugsails too flat, and the result was a very disappointing sailing performance. A second critical factor is correctly tensioning the luff first, then the vang, adjustments that need to be done with each change of windstrength and point of sailing. th-cam.com/video/CyljecUybZw/w-d-xo.html

Bet the youngest guy was doing all the hiking! Anyway lots of skill & nothing broke...quite a test in that wind. Good planning to tack in the lee of the point. Very nice.

The youngest guy, James Pierce was rebelling... sitting out is generally forbidden! He's now into Paragliding....

Crew weight that day 260kg. Sail area, 8.5 sqm. If alone, I would have reefed to about 4.5 sqm, but would not made such good progress to windward. The water was 48f, 9C. We usually forbid sitting out or on the gunwhale as falling overboard might jeapodize the rest of the crew; breaking my own rule I capsized the boat for the first time in 25 years for just that reason... my wellington booted foot slipped out from under a thwart as I hiked, I went in still grasping the mainsheet! Self rescued.

      Richard Pierce
      ‘Gunwale’.
A ‘wale’ is a thicker strake along the side of the boat.
A ‘whale’ is a marine mammal.

@@johnstarkie9948 I am English. In England (and Scotland) we spell it Gunwhale... According to the Oxford English Dictionary.

      And you’re so wrong.

I agree about the capsize risk if sitting on the gunnel. The boat sails very well to windward.

    Great sailing.
I don't think modern fibre glass dinghies would sail that fast with 4 persons on board.
    Congratulations!
I would like to have a look at the plans. I already built a 14 and a 20 ft wooden boats.

14 aboard a 14-footer =:-{o but you need ballast in those conditions!

  • @likeredsail
    @likeredsail  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Ballast is certainly not needed, especially with 4 x 150lbs+ crew aboard. On this particular occasion it was the young one 'hiking', but there's plenty of life in the old dog yet... see here th-cam.com/video/O1G6_P5TECM/w-d-xo.html
