Here is a video how I reef a balanced lugsail on my sooty tern.
This is on a very quiet day, but it worked very well in demanding conditions too.

Your boat seemed to tend itself so well while in a " head to wind" position. Your reef did not take too long, important while single handing. Would have been so neat to also see your boat from an outside point of view intercut with what we did actually see...I'd like to see more of your boat, it's shape & it's lines

I´ll do some filming this coming season. A thing I was thinking about for a while now anyway.
      Glad you liked it.

Thanks for the video, Max. Everything is so calm in this one, I would love to see you managing your boat in a stiffer breeze!

Great video, I was wondering how to manage this. Seems that the key is to lock the tiller in place. I was finding the boat moving out of chains and the sail catching the wind and tipping me over.

Yes, I allways lock the tiller and adjust the mizzen into a next to close hauled position. That keeps the boat in place. Have fun trying.

Thanks Max. You can see what i am working with here: th-cam.com/video/AJJTMAS4q7E/w-d-xo.html
It is only 85cm wide (2.5 feet) so it is very quick to roll over if the wind catches the sail.

I see. Very tippy and no mizzen. But this will be a fun boat once you get used to its behavior.

You should not tie the buntlines around the boom, they should just be tied around the sail.

      What???

@@JBattler Rusty Knorr is right. This is doubly important if the full sail is only attached at the tack and clew rather than laced on. One problem with the ties going round the boom is it distorts the shape of the sail; the other is the risk of damaging the sail by tearing an eyelet out. The reefing is done at the tack then the clew. The intermediate ties are simply to tidy the surplus sail up.

I think you mean reefing nettles.
      Buntlines are quite different.
And yes, best not to tie them around the boom.

Hello Max, I'm building a Caledonia Yawl (I worked in a shipyard) and I got a good point but I'm still undecided whether to arm the boat sail rig with 2 or 3 sail rig, considering that often go boating single, what do you recommend ? Thank you for your Sooty Tern which I have seen pictures of the construction on Flickr.

      Hi Moaremontilago
I think both rig work well singlehanded.
With 3 sails you probabely speak about gaff sail with a jib and a mizzen.
To me it is more a question of personal preference.
      What do you like more?
For a gaff rig and jib I would choose a stayed mast.
So you will get more set up time and more rope, but you probably point higher.
I like the lug rig very much and experienced it as a very powerfull sail.

Max...I am considering using the balanced lugsail on a small trimaran I am building. Do you think a lug sail system would do well on a small tri with an unstayed mast? Also, how well does it go to wind? Thanks

Tom I love my lug sail
      but
If your tri is going to be a little speed machine I would choose some more modern foil instead with a higher aspect ratio.
I sailed Tornado many years, and due to the high speed you sail close hauled
most of the time. Even on a broad reach.
That is not the real strength of a lug sail.
But there is quite some folks that have a lug sail on their tri´s.
You may ask this question at the woodenboat forum.
