    It's crazy. I played D&D in my teens back in the 80's with 1st Edition. "Grew out of it" for a long time. Then discovered Critical Role during the Pandemic in 2020. That led me to your channel, Jacob. Funny how things all connect around.

    C1 was a "classic" high fantasy campaign, in a LOT of ways. Most of the characters are classic fantasy tropes - brooding Rogue, Cleric of Light, horny Bard, comic relief Barbarian, etc. Literally over half the party had the "dead parent(s)" origin. The campaign does the most classic fantasy eacalation of stakes - clear the dungeon, save the town, save the country, clean up your personal messes so you can emotionally level up, and save the world. Lots of drinking, sudden raising of stakes, badass fight scenes, and even some romance. If you're going to introduce the world to "cartoons based on Dungeons and Dragons", C1 is a gift. With some polish, it'll translate incredibly.
    I think what people forget is that by the time C1 closes and character creation for C2 officially began, these people had become *professional D&D players*. The cast went from 3 active players, 4 newbies, and 1 lapsed player to being 7 professional D&D players and a professional DM. So of course they came into it with more original characters - they'd been playing 5e once a week for nearly 3 years at that point, meaning they were comfortable enough to do wild backstories and not get constantly lost in the mechanics.

      I resent the implication that the C1 characters are "less interesting" than the M9. M9's backstories often came off as overstuffed and melodramatic when all smushed together as one group (I still enjoyed it, but it's not easily adaptable). I genuinely prefer the relative simplicity of VM because it highlights how they respond to both each other and situations due to their inherent personalities, not simply their trauma and backstories.

    I agree on the hoping they slow down for heart-felt moments. For me I think the test will be the Scanlan backstory stuff between the Briarwood and Conclave arcs. If they can properly flip that switch on his character for a new audience it will set the tone for character expectations for the rest of the show. So far while I still like these versions of Scanlan, Grog and Keyleth they're all missing a bit of what made them unique. For Scanlan it's his long con jokes and surprising wisdom. For Grog it's his aggressive nature he had towards anyone other than the Gnomes. The loveable idiot was a smaller part of his character that Pike usually brought out. For Keyleth it's missing her judgment towards the party's behavior. She had a naive view on how the world worked and her Aramente was about gaining experience and learning that not everything is black and white.

    Talking about season 1. The Kraken fight was especially bad because a lot of the cast, Marisha in particular, were drunk during the episode. They were not listening well or thinking clearly, and Keyleth was their only full spellcaster in a fight underwater that put the martials at severe disadvantage. They were also taking a lot of their anger for Scanlan out on Tary, which is in character, but it wasn't fun to watch them all be super petty with the character who was 3 levels lower than them. Also you are correct in that this was directly after the Chroma Conclave arc so they were kind of directionless.

    Something I was thinking about regarding the longer, drawn out sessions of their legit game being summed up quicker within the show itself. I think that fast paced tone we've been getting is a very nice way to speed up some of those lulls. Having the retrospective that their group has looking back and making it all "Fresh" with the Legend of Vox Machina show is a powerful tool. I am SUPER hopeful that we will see multiple seasons and get the full Campaign 1 in animated format.

This is how you end up with a vampire who introduces himself in a dramatic moment as "I... am Cleatus." I have no idea where it came from, but my brain was all "No no no no... Too late." The table paused, and we all broke into insane laughter and had to take a long break. My players were awesome and kind of retconned it to be spelled "Kly'tuss" which sounds much more badass...

    I’ve always had an interest in wanting to try D&D but all my friends are too cool for it haha… the nerdiest thing they will do is watch things like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead or maybe the random Marvel movie. So I just discovered this whole new world with Critical Role and this great show. M9 had hour-wise a very small amount of actual content and story, most of it was the party fucking about and dodging plothooks left and right.

    • @frgscajs2018
      @frgscajs2018 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@MightyGachiman That is... not correct? They followed plenty of plot hooks, they were just largely the character-focused hooks rather than the world hooks. There was the first arc where they were getting to know each other, but then they became pirates finding out more about Fjord's backstory. Then they went to Xhorhas for Nott's backstory. Then the Greying Wildlands and the Happy Fun Ball in order to save Yasha. Then they stopped a war (which was kind of the one big external plot hook they engaged with), then came Jester's arc, then the final arc with Lucien and a bit of Caleb's backstory mixed in.

    • @Hunterfalke
      @Hunterfalke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frgscajs2018 They became pirates, touched upon Fjords story and then as quickly as possible abandoned it. And never came back to it out of own volition. And to take it even further, they didn't even intend to become pirates. It mostly just happened.
      The story of the M9 is definitely not as easy to classify into arcs like the story of Vox Machina was. The campaign had a bunch of incredible moments, probably more so than campaign 1. But it is definitely fair to say that it was less plot-focussed, both in a character and a world sense.

    • @frgscajs2018
      @frgscajs2018 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Hunterfalke So I both agree with you while at the same time disagreeing with you. I think you are correct when you say M9 is harder to classify into arcs, and that it is less "plot-focused." However (and I don't mean this to come across condescending) I think Vox Machina gave people a particular idea of what following through on a "plot hook" is supposed to look like, and so when they talk about the M9 people say they abandon plot points when really they just... conclude them in a way people don't expect (although, as with any DnD campaign, I'm sure there genuinely are a few threads that were left unresolved by the end, I just think there are fewer than people imagine there are).
      M9 is a much more character driven campaign. Not to say that the characters are necessarily better or more fleshed out than VM, it's just that VM were largely motivated by external, black-and-white threats they were compelled to resolve because they were heroes of Tal'Dorei. What ended up happening with M9 was that they were largely motivated by internal conflicts and personal goals, rather than missions or quests, and the campaign became about helping each member discover who they were and who they wanted to be in the wake of past traumas. As a result, plot threads tended to resolve when the character in focus had come to peace with something or discovered something about themselves, rather than a climactic battle or encounter. They went out to sea not to defeat Uk'otoa or pursue a particular concrete goal; Fjord wanted to find out more about what had happened to him, and what it meant for who he wanted to be. He explored the idea of being Uk'otoa's chosen, what that power would be like, but then decided that wasn't what he wanted to be, and so he turned his back on it, intent on focusing on the future and finding a better route towards personal power instead. It was a similar story with a lot of the others; confronting their backstories and the conflicts there wasn't necessarily about defeating them, like Percy and the Briarwoods, but about confronting how that situation had affected each character, and how they chose to grow beyond it.
      Sorry about the mini essay, and believe that this isn't me angry-ranting at you or anything. I think the different structures and focuses of the two campaigns are fascinating, and that each one tells its own wonderful story; it's just that I think people's expectations from Vox Machina and from DnD games in general give them a perception that the M9 is a more incoherent story when there's actually a very consistent theme in how they approach the different threads of the campaign, it's just rather nontraditional.

    • @chrisjarvis4097
      @chrisjarvis4097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Hunterfalke they backed out of fjords story because of fjord. He didn't want to be a follower of ukatoa so why continue on that path. Also it's not hard to put the story in arcs at all.
      Arc 1: goes from when they meet to the end of the harvest festival.
      Arc 2: The jobs for the gentleman and taking down the iron shepherds.
      Arc 3: fjords backstory, darktow and the intro to the happy fun Ball.
      Arc 4: going to Xorhas, chasing obann, happy fun ball part 2, stopping the angel of irons.

Though I haven't watched campaign one I'm aware of a lot about them, so I know things, but for a new watcher, they kinda only get so much out of each character during the season. Like Scanlan really just kinda is the horny bard joke save a few moments or Grog just being the meathead jock and I can see someone going "Ok, so this is it then? What a trash character." cause they don't know there's a lot more depth coming.

    When I want to name people I go to google. So like if I want to name an elf I might google "elf names" or "elf surnames" and start reading through lists. Most of the time I will mispronounce a name the first time and love the sound then go with that instead of what the name should have been... then change the spelling so people actually pronounce it how I first messed it up.
    My first DnD name was a half elf named Jonn Aadoe. It was a twist on John Doe. When John Doe's are given a middle initial it is A. John A Doe. So I went with Jonn as an odd spelling for John and Aadoe as a combination of A. Doe.

      That was episode 1. So the first episode of Campaign 1 isn't the beginning of the adventure like we see with the first episodes of Campaigns 2 and 3. The group had actually been playing the campaign for two years before the streams began as part of their private home game. Felicia Day offered to have them start doing a D&D stream for Geek and Sundry and the group decided to just transition their home game into the stream and continue where they left off rather than start all over again. It seems to start right in the middle of a quest because they had literally just started that quest in their home game right before making the move to Twitch. Give it another go. If you're curious about what was missed, they actually put out a video explaining the story covered in the home game as a way of catching people up to where the first episode finds the party. th-cam.com/video/kKixWUIgmKA/w-d-xo.html here's the pre-stream adventures of Vox Machina (known at the time as the SHITs, or the Super High Intensity Team, a name they abandoned once they realized they were going to stream the game)

      Don't skip! There are just a couple episodes that drag, but they're worth it overall as there are some really standout moments in there. For reference, I have watched both campaigns twice. C2 drags way more than C1 ever does, and does so multiple times. Especially if you're seen C2, try to hang in there for the handful of slow moments in C1. Enjoy it! :)

    Spoilers for episode 3:
    ngl I think they rushed the no mercy percy bit to fast and didn't use that scene specifically to characterize Percy as much as the actual campaign did.
    What we got just felt like an introduction to the shadow demon thing (I haven't watched campaign one so idk completely what it is). If they used the lines where Percy listed off his parents names and the "I will kill you first" bit would have been amazing to put here. Not only slow down the pace and give some really good characterization to percy so we can bask in this mans insecurities, but make this moment impact hard after the fight sequence instead of the rushed feeling we all got. I'm not saying rushed like they didn't rescript it enough, but that the moment went by way to fast. If the mask had been left in the background and only used the way it was used in the next 3 episodes it would of been superb and would of had this great contrast so we know who is Percy and who is the mask.

      Arcane and tLoVM are very different shows with very different goals and genres. Comparing them isn't really fair. Their only really thing in common is that they're animated. Even the style of animation is different. This doesn't make one better than another

      @Hunterfalke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I gotta admit, the first episode was rough. The comedy was fairly bad, the characters extremely one-note and i didn't enjoy it all that much. It wasn't awful or anything, but just... I wouldn't watch it if it hadn't had the CritRole team behind it.
      Now that they've arrived at the Briarwood arc, i enjoy it a ton. Animation has improved, it is tonally far better, great running gag with the door and seeing some of the moments animated as well as animated moments that only work in a show (like Percy spinning the gun barrel, drowning out the music with the clicking noise.). Storyboarding also noticeably improved, with setups and payoffs.
      By now, i can say i enjoy this show. It does have the misfortune of being the first animated show i've watched after Arcane, which was an absolute masterpiece.

    I really liked Campaign 1 of Critical Role, and I had high hopes for the animation to take me back to those days.
    Unfortunately, all I got was violence and dick jokes.
    Seeing as how Campaigns 2 and 3 have become more "performance" and less "people playing DnD" ...I should have expected this.
    Good to see them having success. They're all good people. But, I'm happy I didn't pay for it.

  • @hambinger
    @hambinger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not at all family friendly. Critical role itself never has been. I find Scanlan to be the worst part about the series. But I've always felt that about critical role. He's the reason that "bards are pervs" are such a huge cliche and extremely problematic elements at many gaming tables. That said, the series is really great, except for all that... some of the gore is a bit dumb... it's like people are made out of exploding jello... but that's a problem with most tv gore.

  • @LoneKuroRaifu

    Dont like crude humor, and LoVM is just that with sex. Kinda why I dropped off CR for a while to watch EvenFall and Avnia for a while. While Kurt (EvenFall character) is basically Quagmire with magic, its funny in a chaotic way. CR find it fun to beat up a young soldier who thought they were inspiring and immediately hazed them till they were near death. Yeah its fake, but doesn't make the story any less unsettling, and not in a good way. Its just messed up. There are other moments too in the series that was just off putting but I managed to get through it all and dont plan on watching an animated version of it.
