I feel like the crit system is so debatable because it really depends on your own personal experiences. For instance, it sounds like from your perspective crits happen a lot and your players always end up doing large bursts of damage. But from my perspective every campaign that I played whether I'm a player or DM I hardly ever see anyone crit during combat. So from my perspective, I wouldn't want to get rid of crits from rogues or paladins because it would take a lot of the exciting moments of when it does happen which again, is very rare from my experience

Hey, fun fact. (I'll be that kind of guy because it's worth it and because you gotta know) Pathfinder 2e, actually already has since the beginning most of the things that you mentioned that are interesting and cool and some more. Speaking of spell lists also, pf2e has arcane, divine, primal and occult spell lists. They have a very savory skill and class and spell progression. They are super customizable and very appealing, you should really check it out.
edit: im at 24 so just in case the pf2 discussion comes up, im not there yet

Thank you for bringing up the point of there is a difference between just reading the book and running the adventure. For example, I am running a pre-written adventure through Pathfinder second edition and I thought the adventure would be really dumb and weird after I read through it. However, the adventure so far is pretty fun and a great low-level experience. With that perspective in mind, I will definitely take the reviews from people who have only read the book with a grain of salt because you never know it's a great adventure until you experience it.

Hey Craig, there is third party supplement otter race. In the book Adventures in Rokugan (based on the 5 rings game) there's a race that can turn into one creature. I believe deer, fox, or otter. It's a pretty cool book with a lot of cool classes and races. Also a lot of new combat mechanics. Check it out if you get a chance. It's very dope, but strangely no one has been talking about it.

I thought I should point out that in 5e, you get the effect of One D&D's slowed status whenever you go through a space one size smaller than your size. There's rules on getting through small spaces in the PHB that say when a creature moves inside a space of 5ft thinner them them (so a large creature fitting into a medium creature worth of space), they get disadvantage on attacks, reflex saves, and spend 1 foot for ever foot traveled. Its kinda cool to see that expanded upon into its own full on status in One D&D.

Several months ago I started making my homebrew world, and the big idea I had was that arcane magic was a brand new thing. Divine magic had been around forever, but now we also have this new arcane magic and it's all about how do people and societies react to that. When I first started making that and spitballing ideas with my friends, one of them asked what about druids and rangers? And I didn't have an answer, because saying that druids and wizards were the same wasn't satisfying to me for what I was trying to go for. So I said for the purpose of the world and flavor, there were 3 categories of magic. Divine, arcane, and nature. fast forward to One DnD busting out primal magic and I had this incredible moment of "THAT'S WHAT I WAS DOING!"

Just to have if you want to use it.

I mean, I still think that races should have some attribute bonuses that are tied to their lore and race description.
Like, dwarves have always been this rough and tumble race, so they can get like a +1 bonus to Constitution, while elves have always been this elegant and agile race, so they can get a +1 bonus to dexterity.
I think having a set attribute score increase and attribute score increases that are based on your background is the ideal way to go, to reflect both your character's upbringing and your character's ancestry. Hell, take a page out of Pathfinder's book and give attribute score increases based off your class as well.

Also, if races don't really matter much now, then why do humans still get all the advantages over the other races?
An extra skill proficiency, a 1st level feat, and now you get a Free Inspiration per long rest!!!
Then you take into account that increases in your ability score come from your background now and there is no drawback to picking human. In Fact is the most OP race to play.

I dislike when companies try to jump out of the numbered 'editions'. It just makes it hard to keep track of what you are talking about or searching for. The perfect example of confusion vs clarity, with naming, is the comparison between Xbox and PlayStation.
It is also very likely won't be the final version of D&D, just like 'WIndows 10' wasn't the final version of Windows. Its just marketing
An 'edition' doesn't have to mean all things have changed, it could just be errata if they wanted. So, calling it 6th edition (or some other number) would just makes sense, and will likely be called that anyway to keep things clear, as people will still be playing older editions too.
That said, new systems and content are fun, so I'm looking forward to new stuff.

But it is slightly different from some of the 3.5 rules I’ve seen online, so it’s probably 3. I also have a bunch of the “Complete” series, PHB2, and the Magic Item Compendium - which again don’t have any edition numbers printed on them. And it’s a constant source of debate whether our DMs DMG is 3 or 3.5, (I’m fairly sure it’s 3, but he insists it’s 3.5). I legit hate the new changes to building characters. I've hated them since Tasha made the change, which "we swear will just be an optional choice". It no longer feels like race/species is a meaningful choice that affects gameplay or character, but is rather now just an aesthetic choice to add a little "spice" to backstory. It just makes mid/maxing more of a focus. I think character building in 5E was great. My only problem with backgrounds is that they were kind of limited in scope of choice and tied you to a certain story arc if you wanted to a certain skill. I do like the the adding of feats to backgrounds, but I think that should be in addition to the backgrounds special bonus power it granted, which often times was rather useless except in very specific scenarios.

My only complaint about races is the half races as they currently are in the play test (unless they’ve changed it since I last looked) are more like a lite version of 1 of their parents when it comes to mechanics, you pick a racial trait from one of your parents, feels less like you’re a combination of both mechanically and more like you’re one of your two parent races but with cooler flavor

The paladin talk reminded me of my main ranger fix.
I keep deft explorer but hunters mark, favored terrain, favored foe, and favored enemy are gone. In their place rangers get favored mana.
At levels 1, 6, and 14 the ranger picks one of the mana colors from Magic the Gathering. White, blue, black, red, green, or colorless.
At those levels you get your int mod in bonus languages. Also each terrain, creature type, background, habitat, and most races are tied to at least one color of mana. All dex, int, and wis ability checks related to anything tied to your favored mana are made with advantage. All weapon attacks on creatures tied to your favored mana deal one additional damage die of the weapons normal type.
I can easily see giving "favored mana: black" to all paladins anywhere from level 1 to 5. An extra damage die and advantage on checks against undead, fiends, aberrations, and creatures or races created by dark magic, curses, and magical runoff/cataclysms is a classic paladin gimmick. And it's still not enough to come close to being as broken as baseline smite.

That doctor is stupid and is doing it wrong. 1. 5g doesn't work like that. 2. that technique used right can help find points in your back and is a kinda natural way to figure out allergies. The first is more than the second. 3. It's the opposite way. First, you would have nothing in your opposite hand. so nothing in your left hand and pushing on your right. Next, you would either put something in the left hand you could be allergic to ( requires special items for real testing ). Or you push on points in the back while pushing on the same point on the right hand. This is best performed by a Chiropractor, not just some rando. If your chiropractor comes out with a towel please say no ty and walk out. That's my two cents.

Wouldn't making a module for the "new player experience" more cookie cutter and easier to supplant into other rulesets also take the character out of the world building? If there's a wipe of racial culture or a removal of background features, then there's less of a world to understand and interact with. If kobolds and gnomes get along in later installments then there's no creative struggle of getting out of those situations. And it feels like "Monsters of the Multiverse" and "1D&D" want to remove those features for fear of "racist outcry". It feels like a hollow world.

    • @kagato23
      @kagato23 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think this is where the supplements will come in. The sword coast guide and the Exandria guide had details about the local species relationships which would make sense going forward. The PHB discusses the multiversal trends and the setting books cover how they interact in this spot. All speculation of course.

I think the fact they have this weird team up with DnD beyond is really suspicious. Like they want us all paying subscriptions too them.
Also I feel like they are not taking the care. The ranger for example has this one really broken (and boring) ability but then its special stealth ability is dogshit.

Of course they want us all using D&D Beyond, WotC owns it now. It's not that weird that they're pushing people toward using it. This is also playtest, so with feedback (hopefully) they can tweak things to be better in the future release. What we're seeing now isn't a final product.

I think the best thing for them to do on "one d&d" is to release a "Easy" and "Hard" version. Mainly because new players wanna play but dont wanns get bogged down by the rules.
Basically keeping as many thing AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE (Ex. Advantage is 2 dice take the higher roll and disadvantage cancels adv. Making it a straight roll.)
However Veteran players like rules to make things more complicated to make things as realistic as possible. (Advantage would be a plus 2 to your rolls however you can stack adv and disadv by a +/- 2 to get your final roll)
In the end they will want to encourage Homebrew and being able to bend the rules table by table and you will ultimately take from both modes easy & hard.

    • @kagato23
      @kagato23 ปีที่แล้ว

In the end it will be overly complicated to do it this way, you’ll have people wanting to play different sets of tules and you’ll have to increase the length of the new PHB and DMG books considerably.

Only 12 min into this, but my thoughts on the 2 playtests they have released so far is this; they want to make the game more clear and less nuanced or even convoluted, as well as make it more even. By the latter I mean they want to take those classes or subclasses that are really weak and buff them and take those classes that are over powered and nerf them, same thing with feats and other things. Simply put, I like this. It will mean things like GWM, CE, SS, will get a nerf, it will also mean things like Grappler, and TWF will get a buff. Ideally this would also mean wizards and bards would get nerfed while monks and Warlocks and rogues would get a bump. That is my assumption for what they are attempting, however I think they will have a difficult time. Any nerf they implement will get heavy pushback even if it is for better balance of the whole ecosystem, the other issue that they will run into is this, they are claiming this is completely backwards compatible, however what do you do with races, classes, spells and feats that were not written with this ecosystem in mind? If they are bros they would release addendum blocks with the release of the new ecosystem for all of the digital books, however that probably isn't a good business model as they are still trying to get people to buy things.
So, in summary they are setting themselves up for something that isn't actually backwards compatible but is adjustable with rolling releases, if they want to make this more friendly to their base adding adjustments for existing monsters, classes, subclasses, items, spells, etc. For their existing books at release would be the best way to keep their base happy, we will see if that is the approach they take. People are going to rage and WotC may cave and if so may just give us power creep and nothing more. I hope this isn't the case, and hope that people can understand why their go to optimization (which is everyone's go to optimization because it is better than other options) gets nerfed to be more in line.
At the end of the day I do not envy the position WotC is in.
