Just a heads up for future reference. You said you were looking for 3/4 square 1080 and you should check out maritime knife supply. They have a couple choices of 1080 hex stock and while not exactly square it'd be easier to make square than forge welding a bunch together at least that's my opinion. Thanks for sharing your build it turned out great.
Good job. Nice sword!
24:55 "23/32nd's the width of a McDonald's hamburger". Sir, you just earned a subscriber!
😂 then you’re gonna love the samurai challenge build
it's also 1/896th of a football field
Footballs (the American real football), giraffes, jumbo jets, and other random objects are all better than the European atheist “measurement” system.
Great work sir! Came out looking great. Watermelon stood no chance 😆
Amazing build, John! Love watching your process. There really is nothing to it. 🤣
Came for sword, and "nothin' to it really". Left totally satisfied. As always.
💪⚒️🔥🗡️
Considering that you decided on doing one of the oldest decorative damascus patterns and one with one of the highest failure rates, I would say that, despite the things you would change, you knocked it out of the park.
Beautiful work! The look on your face on that first watermelon was just priceless 😂
I know it doesn't look like the serpent core you were hoping for, but it does look like the dwarves worked some magic on a plank of old hickory wood & turned it into steel. It's a fine sword.
Skål! 🍻
I love your videos because you talk, but not too much! Just enough to tell us what you’re doing and teaching, excellent video and beautiful sword!
Dude.
That sword is FILTHY!!! I can't say what I actually said during the sharpness tests but it started with "H. F. S. !!!!". That pattern looks like wood-grain to me, in certain points. Absolutely tough lookin'!
Btw, Julie, I like the saw blade art piece too. The waterfall and color blue choice is beautiful, honey.
I can confirm... I get the idea. 😂
Stunning sword mate! Those watermelons may as well have been butter!
As a smith who is just sick and tired of damascus and the requests for it, I have to say ... this is probably the sickest pattern I've ever seen. I've literally never liked a damascus pattern, but this one is fucking glorious.
Great looking sword! nicely done
Love the staggered pattern on each side of the serpent core.
I agree the ball bearing would have been great looking too. Could make a sister sword. Lol!
Nice work!
I'd keep that sword too. Amazing flex in the blade as well.
That’s a thing of beauty!
Welcome back, John! This time, there's somethin to it!
Awesome work sir! A master class on forge welding up the cable for sure... I haven't done that before. That final stack was HUGE! Nice thoughts on the power hammer... it's on my list!
Your new shop apprentice did great! Nothing to it really. I love the sword dude! Great build! 🤙
That really turned out impressive!
The sign is nigh. There's something to it, really.
A comment on one of my older videos I remember well was "one day there will be something to it, I live in fear of that day..." hopefully that guy sees this hahaha
I'm very proud of ya for that pc of art!!! Great job, Sir!
That turned out to be pretty stinking nice sword!
Great sword, you've done an amazing job with it. I like your attention to some historical accuracy as well. As a Canadian, I'm afraid I have to disagree with your opinion of the metric system. Base 10 fits everything we already do every day. There are 10 fingers and 10 toes. 10 pennies in a dime and 10 dimes to a dollar. Many of the things we do every day are base 10. Having a base 10 measuring system makes sense in the same way for the same reasons.
Awesomeness! What a great build, and there is definitely “something to it” 😂👍
Great project! I've been a fan for years and this is definitely one of my favorites.
I've seen two others, so far, in this, and so far, this one is by far my favorite,,
Really beautiful pattern, love it!
You crushed it!! Well done, seriously I know you would change some things about it, but I think it is amazing as is. Awesome job and thank you for the video.
Just woke up and this is the first thing I watched! Excellent execution, that construction is not an easy feat bro! nice job on the weight to. I think the contrast looks great. Id love to use it if you know what I mean!💪🏻⚔️
Man this thing came out great!
Beautiful work of art Sir!
I love this sword; it’s beautiful 🤩
Damn dude! That is beautiful! Great work!
Beautiful sword. Nice video.
It may not have turned out the way you imagined it to be but, since it was your first try, it still turned out great! And I'm sure you learned a lot, and how to improve it in the future! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done! 🤔😱👍
Haha, 'Metric measurements are the tool of the devil'! So funny! I was born in the mid 1970s in the UK, and by the time I was at school, Metric was the way......However, metal and woodworking wasn't taught at school, I learned woodworking from my Dad, who was a child of the 1940s, so I learned feet and inches from him....And mountain navigation......I then learned navigation from the Army in Metric, so I work in a really confused mix of metric AND Imperial. Somewhere may well be 2 miles 300 Metres away......A car may be 9ft 16cm long. Works for me even if it doens't work for anyone else. Stunningly beautiful sword! Truly a piece of work to be proud of!
NO SLACK!!! Great work!!
Love the shouted narration over the noise from the machines.
Really impressive work Jon. Thanks for documenting this process it was a real pleasure to watch.
insane work mate, thats one hell of a sexy sword
Great work as always and I love Julie's art. So glad I started following her months ago.
Dude! Hats off to you brother! Love seeing people challenge themselves!! Great work!!! 👊
What a sword!
Beautiful sword sir!
A work of art sir thank you
Just incredible, John! Immense black and blade smithing skills!
What a beauty, you made that look easy 🙂
Because there’s nothin to it really. 😂
this challenge is wonderful thanks
Amazing work! Beautiful sword!
Beautiful work, lots of forge welding. Love the effort!
Bloody awesome mate!
Very impressed with your work love the channel and good luck with the challenge
Very beautiful sword and a really informative video gave me a lot of pointers for a build I plan on doing so thank you
That is absolutely beautiful. For myself, I really like the wrought iron-esque pattern that the cable damascus provided; it's probably closer to what an actual viking-age sword would look like.
I also really appreciate how true you were to the source material - so many people take one look at the word viking and beeline straight for Assassin's Creed Valhalla or some other fantasy 'viking' garbage that bears no resemblance to the archeology.
Stunning job.
This was so worth the wait. I’ve been waiting for this build video since Dennis announced it was going to be a Viking challenge. Hopefully I can get my numbers up so I can compete next year.
Awesome sword! Love watching forging videos. That blade almost looks like it has a wood grain. Love it.
You should be pretty stinkin' happy! That sword is freaking beautiful. And today I learned the width of a McDonald's hamburger, and that the decimal system is the work of the Devil. Not bad for a Tuesday.
Welcome back John!
That is a gorgeous sword!!! That watermelon didn't stand a chance!!
Also, who needs a gym when you're swinging 30lbs of steel around the shop!?
Fantastic work!
Pretty dang awesome
A sword any Viking would have been proud to own
Beautiful.
Beautifully done!! I would keep it too!! Thank you
Honestly that blade is really impressive; that's a thing of beauty that you should be proud of. You may not have gotten the results that you wanted or were hoping for but I think it worked out better than you think.
Dude! The billet at 13:13....Huge! Gorgeous piece! I like the boldness of the pattern and the overall profile is mint! Well done!
The smile on your face when you first started swinging that sword was our joy haha
Really excited for this one
That came out amazing. It's so awesome to see you back making videos. I nearly spat my coffee across the room when you said the maccas cheeseburger conversion 😂
Keep up the great work.
Nice work John
Looks great man!
Take a shot every time you hear, “Nothin’ to it, really.”
Lot of work, lot of forge welding. Well done! 👍💪☀️👍
Well done, good job!
Did you know, that Black Beard Projects made a viking sword with a serpent in the core too?
Might be interesting to see those two blades side by side
Getting that to weld up as a first multi bar weld is a really great accomplishment
Every dealing I've had with Dave, I've been completely satisfied.
Looks awesome man, Still surprised how flexible that thing is without breaking!
i love your sense of humor man lmao.
i think the project ended up BEAUTIFUL!
Imagine a book on viking swords giving measurements in the European way of measuring. Its almost like that where vikings came from or something...
Nice sword and cool looking pattern. Best part is watching the watermelon just slice apart when it fell onto the blade.
Awesome video as always
looks great
Very nice!!!
If i had to give your masterpiece a name, it would be "Odin's Wrath". Great job
There's another serpent core sword in this challenge as well, Black Beard Projects.
The pattern looks like wood grain! Very pretty
OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH
Badass 🔥
23/32 of a hamburger! I almost choked on my red crayons!
Are you bringing this to BladeShow this year? I'd love to see it in person.
Super awesome 👏👏👏👏👏🤜🤛
damit, yours was my vote...
Wow, there *really was* something to it, really...
This was awesome, i found myself gigglin like a child when you cut the melons in pieces.
Badass
impressive....
What do you use to measure the depth of your Fuller's as you grind them so you don't ruin your blade by grinding to thin
“The metric system is the tool of the devil” 😁😄😆😂🤣
Do you have any of that billet left? Would you consider selling enough for a guy just learning to work metal to make himself a seax?
How much would it coast for a Damascusu u.s. m.c k bar fighting knife
