Polo 6R - Removing and installing the instrument cluster

  • In this clip, I give a detailed, step-by-step walkthrough of how to remove the instrument cluster and install it back.
    Back in 2014, I had swapped the stock instrument cluster on my Polo with the one from the Polo GTI. Adapting the cluster by coding the immobiliser, matching the odometer reading from the old cluster and matching the car keys require the support of the authorised service centre or an expert who can do this job.

    Hello Sir, i can't remove the top part of the steeribg column cowl that covers the screws. No matter how hard i try, it doesn't move. It looks so easy the way you just pull it. Does it maybe have to do some thing with the little metal clips which can be seen at 1:05 in all 3 holes?

      You just have to pull it like really hard. Try it out.

    Great piece of advice at the end of the video, wrt to the immobiliser coding of the car keys. That’s the most important aspect of this retrofit as the maxidot cluster is not plug & Play. One thing I would like to ask, can the stock cluster be used again later after upgrading to the maxidot or it’s a dead piece.

      Hi Navmeet, from what I know, a new cluster can be coded twice. So the odo reading can be transferred to a stock cluster once again after it has been used.

    Hi Gannu. Did you have to upgrade the BCM of the 6R for the new instrument cluster to work?
    I have a VW Vento 1.6 tdi highline for which inhad upgraded the steering wheel with controls on left and right but the ones on the right dont work obviously because I still have the old cluster. Therefore, wanted to know if I will have to upgrade the BCM as well while upgrading the cluster.

      Hi Anirudh, I had upgraded the BCM to install cruise control in my car. Coincidentally, I had also installed the Mk7 steering wheel and the controls and lighting worked. I am not sure if the BCM was helpful for that upgrade.
      Why don’t you try sourcing a BCM from a scrap car in a salvage yard in your town? That would be the cheapest bet to find a replacement BCM.

      Hii gannu sir I have vento tdi 2012 highline varient. I want to retrofit cruise control. Do I need to change instrument cluster. Because my instruments cluster does not have cruise control symbol.will it work without instruments cluster change..

    Hiya bud, watching this from the UK. I have a 61 plate GTI with the upgraded cluster but as it is an import, it reads in KM/H. I have bought a unit that displays MPH was just wondering will this be plug and plqy? Cheers

      Hello Charlie, it’s not plug and play and requires additional equipment to take the data out of your stock cluster and code your new cluster. Your dealership should do it for you or someone who does retrofits on VAG cars.

    Hello sir, i own a 2019 Skoda Rapid 1.5 TDi. I wish to update my cluster to a maxi dot one. Can i install this GTi cluster in my Skoda Rapid? My car has 89C BCM.

    My instrument cluster is playing up so going to get a second hand one, but can I just switch them over/plug and play or do I need to have new cluster coded? Any help would be massively appreciated, thanks

      Hi, you’ll have to code the replacement cluster with your car keys. For transferring the odo reading, the EEPROM from the old cluster has to be read using a tool. Where are you based? If it’s Bangalore, I can recommend a friend who’s into retrofits and such. He can do it for you.

    Hlo sir, I own a polo 1.6 petrol 2011 model so I want to change my steering wheel to gt model so for that I have ordered 2017 model cluster, Ecm, clock spring, steering wheel and airbag so will it do or someone is saying that old cluster will not work I'm totally confused please help

      What about the BCM? You will have to get it installed at a place who knows what they are doing. The immobiliser data has to be read from the stock cluster and coded into the new cluster.

      Hi, the cluster indicates the cruise control notification light when it is enabled. So if you need the notification in the interest of safety, it is best to have the cluster that supports it. The old clusters supports cruise control and will work without the notification.
      I sourced the combination switch with cruise control from Spain. You can check eBay.com. Or approach VAG retrofitters who do this work on skoda and VW cars for a cost.

    I have followed your thread on team BHP for swaping BCM, I have swapped my 086H BCM to 087S, so have coded central electronics succefully but not able to code Can Gateway 19 (long Coding) also have bunch of errors coz of that, can you please help me how should I code the CAN GATE?

      Hi Saurabh, trust you’ve taken backups of the long coding and the individual bits which have been ticked. Were you able to transfer the long coding properly to the new BCM? What type of errors are you getting?

      Hi Mazhar, I don’t have the Polo with me. Are you referring to the exterior trim? It has clips which will get damaged while removing and must be replaced. Are you looking to change it to the gloss black trims?

    Isn't the Jetta TDI Maxidot cluster compatible with the GT TDI?

      Nope. Different unit with different placement of buttons. Although the dials do look very similar with similar functionality. :)

    Hi Gannu sir! I am experiencing a very weird thing in my vento 1.6 TDI related to the coolant. Just 3 months back got the car serviced and the coolant level was at max or slightly above max, but now it's right between min and max(slightly above min). Saw for any leakages, but didn't see any symptoms of leakage. Any idea what may be the issue?

      Hi. Did you do a coolant pump change or a coolant change at the service centre? If so, during running, the coolant would get sucked back into the circuit. How long has the car run in terms of km and years? Coolant pump is a frequent failure observed and the pump must be replaced when you change the timing belt at the 90k km mark.

      @@GaneshBalan It's a 2013 model and the car has done 92k kms. Regarding the coolant thing,ig it was topped up and no coolant pump was replaced. I had asked my sa to inspect the timing belt if it needs to be replaced, but at the end nothing was changed, it was a normal service. I ordered a distilled water, will it be fine if i pour some?

      You can pour distilled water not a problem. Please check if the issue persists when you drive further. I couldn’t understand if the coolant pump wasn’t replaced. Your timing belt, accessory belt, idler pulley and the coolant pump must be replaced by now. It is overdue time wise.

Anyways i am waiting for your new thread regarding your polo, yesterday went through your team bhp threads from the beginning and got to know that it's now sold😔( was not aware about it unless i saw a comment on one of your video about it). Got to know a lot about you and your beloved polo, it made me feel sad by looking at your story especially with a car like polo 🥺.       Absolutely. Just need to code it from your existing key and immobiliser from your stock instrument cluster.
      No issues with the tacho. CEL works when it shows up. The only issue is no glow plug warning light that momentarily turns on and off when you start the car.

      Hi, if you tried swapping another instrument cluster in your car, it won’t work.
      You need to access the immobiliser data from your stock cluster and code it into the new cluster and change the odo reading on the EEPROM.
      Only dealerships or those who have the special equipment for accessing EEPROM data can do this.
      My number is 90996 91369 but other than what I’ve mentioned above, I’m afraid I won’t be able to help you further on this.
