A lot of the tech that Xerox implemented was previously demonstrated by Douglas Engelbart 1968 in the "Mother of all Demos".
He and his team pioneered the GUI and a lot of the concepts that would only be implemented commercially many years later.
Engelbart was a visionary and the original inventor of the computer-mouse (although there were other mouse-like devices used previously).

    • @Epictronics1

I had completely forgotten about Engelbart. Thanks for the reminder. I should have mentioned him in this vid

@@Epictronics1 It happened to him a lot, even big institutions forgot his contributions. Many tech gurus of later years credited the MoaD as one of the reasons they became able to "think different". Only a handful of people had a similar influence on our way of life.

Oh no, you also had a floppy drive nightmare! I had a deja Vu! :) I'll be curious to know what the problem is on that one. I have never seen old grease seizing so badly!! Wow that was something. If I might suggest, white spirit. It smells but you can use a container (better if glass but plastic ok) to soak the parts. It will dissolve everything. I call those rings "seeger" rings. Not sure if it's the right name. Very nice outcome!

I had similar problems with my external 400K floppy. I never found the solution, but I was almost on the right track. The hall sensors in the motor assembly apparently go bad. They will measure kinda okay, but I found some forum posts later (years after my repair attempts) that someone repaired the same floppy drive with same symptoms with replacement of the hall sensors

The way I have always heard the story of Apple and PARC was that Ron Wayne and the Steves got some time (24 hours maybe?) with the source code for PARC's GUI in exchange for 100k shared of Apple stock... but who knows? Everyone tells a slightly different story when asked.

You made a comment that the keycaps (except for the spacebar) had not yellowed.
And you would be correct! The keycaps are made of PBT, a plastic that doesn't yellow. The spacebar is made of ABS, which definitely does yellow.
ABS is easier to mold than PBT. Long PBT parts like the spacebar can warp as it cools down during manufacturing. On the IBM Model M keyboard, the spacebar is made of PBT and quite frequently will be warped. Never enough to affect functionality but one of those things a perfectionist will be bothered by once they see it for the first time!

What machine did you use to test the 400K drive? iirc the 400K drive requires the PWM speed signal sent by the logic board on the old machines designed for the 400K drive. newer machines wont provide that signal.

I love the restoration but I'm concerned about the WD-40. There is a widespread belief that it's quite safe and benign but that is not correct. It's petroleum distillate and is poisonous. Right on the front of my can are the words Extreme Danger so I don't recommend breathing it without a second thought and then seeing what happens down the road. If you really want to experiment on a human, at least pick someone you don't like rather than yourself. 😉

WD40 isn't a proper lubricant, it's a water displacement agent and a penetrating oil. It's for stuff that's stuck, but you should clean it off and use a proper lubricant afterwards.
