    The entire song and the video is an artistic masterpiece, and getting Tammy Wynette to sing the lead was a master stroke. However Maxine Harvey's voice on the chorus juxtaposes Tammy beautifully.

    I was a radio dj when this came out....they actually had two versions.....one without Tammy Wynette......all everyone wanted was Tammy. So.....The Queen of Country was being blasted on fm stations and in dance clubs everywhere and I believe she was about 70. She probably made a lot of money off this....well deserved. God bless you and keep you Miss Wynette! I have no idea if she knew....KLF and the Illuminati.....these guys were huge fans of Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson which.....to some was fiction....to others.....a tribe and way of life. And that's where their name KLF, MuMu Land and "kick out the jams" and almost all their lyrics came from. They got filthy rich and burned the money. All hail discordia!!! I'm one with the squirrel as well ;) FNORD

    Tammy Wynette was best known for her country hit single "Stand By Your Man." Justified and Ancient premiered in the US about a week after she died. When this video premiered in The Nashville Network (country MTV, at the time, now Spike), it was on a show called Crook and Chase. After the video, the hosts didn't know what to make of it. It's one of those moments you had to be there for. All they knew going in was it was a new Tammy Wynette song, so they were expecting another "Stand By Your Man." Instead they got this and expressed the kind of confusion one would have if getting something other than what they expected. I can only imagine how all the old school country fans reacted after seeing it that day.

    This song and music video are so weird and wonderful. I love it! The pairing of country singer Tammy Wynette with the KLF was a stroke of genius. Tammy was best known for her 1968 No. 1 country hits "Stand by Your Man" and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." So when this funky song came out some 23 years later, it showcased her in a totally different light! Tammy gives a nod to "Stand by Your Man" when she sings "Stand by the Jams." :-)

    • @gjermundskogstad6393
      @gjermundskogstad6393 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @Jon-Paul Filkins The number 23 is there for good reason, as most of symbols in their music, videos and performances: The universe that Drummond & Caulty describes and reflects in their work, isn't so much their invention as it's their discovery (or even perhaps journey). Their music has such symbolical depth because their creations are more or less based on "The Illuminatus! Triology" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illuminatus!_Trilogy). Please do check it out, but hold on tight to your head! :-D

Unfortunately, Tammy had never worked without a live band in the recoding stage and the attempts were really unsuccessful. They bought tapes back to their studio and had to sync Tammy's vocals to the instrumental track by speeding up or slowing down as needed.

    What was hilarious is that the song is actually making fun of their own success and lots of the lyrics reference their earlier hits. At this point they were kind of over it and started to tear their own image apart. At heart they are experimental artists and they never expected huge success and it actually made them kind of unhappy to have it. Some people saw that as integrity others saw it as pretentiousness and they seemed to see it as both.

      The million pounds wasn't a figure they picked out of the air. It's basically what they made as KLF. Then they deleted their back catalog so as to not make any more money. I don't know if that's integrity or pretension, but I know not a lot of folks would do it. They really put their money where their mouth was.

      @@tommyturk - Cress definitely saw it as pretentious and said they could have given it to charity. It was actually one of the factors in her break-up with Jimmy apparently. She went on to do cancer research and I think she thought that money could have helped people but the boys wanted to do one of their big grandiose performance art things. I agree that virtually nobody else would do it because you need to have a kind of unique mix of artistic temperament, showmanship, lack of greed and self absorption. They did similar stuff when ABBA knocked them back on that sample early on dumping the copies of the track. I get both sides of the argument because whilst it shows their lack of avarice it also was sort of wanky. Thats them though.

They did something not to dissimilar when ABBA knocked them back early on with copies of the track. The KLF - Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty - were basically a huge conceptual prank that somehow ended up producing the most exhilarating hit music of the early 90s. They were jokesters but serious about creating the biggest and catchiest dance tunes possible. And all this was liberally drenched with overwhelming visuals and self-mythology. The music scene became noticeably duller and greyer when they left. All their big hits are pure gold and well worth reacting to:
    Last Train To Trancentral (Live from the Lost Continent)
    3 A.M. Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.)
    What Time Is Love? (Live at Trancentral)
    It's important to include the whole title with the brackets when searching because there are several versions of these songs. Of course, none of these were actually recorded live.

The two guys at the centre of the 'KLF' got bored making hit songs and retired from it...after a while, when they had 1 £million left, they decided to burn it as some 'artistic statement'...I remember it was shown on UK TV...piles of cash burning!!! The music industry hated them coz they did crazy s**t...like one time, after getting a Brit Award and performing...they fired blanks from machine gun at horrified music industry people!! And dropped a dead sheep at the after show party!!

      Not only did they burn money which they stacked up to resemble "art", they were advised they needed a tax write off, so they funded what they were assured would be a flop movie, with an aged star in, guaranteed to fail, except it was a blockbuster: Crocodile Dundee. Not only that they made 2 sequels which were also blockbusters. They bought what they were assured would be a useless racehorse, they named Khelef, which turned out to be super fast, became a super stallion, still producing good foals to this day.

      Don't forget that when ABBA went after them for using "Dancing Queen" for one of their songs they burned every copy they could get their hands on, rereleased it with the samples removed, and included handy step-by-step instructions on how to splice in the samples again. They then went to Sweden in an effort to arrange a meeting with Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, or Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Whoever was the lead at the time. When that fell through they hired an escort while in Stockholm and had her as a stand in for Agnetha and filmed themselves apologizing for the song.
