- INCREDIBLE Walnut Slab | Live Edge Desk …Watch me transform this 100 lb slab of walnut into a luxurious live-edge home office desk with brass
accents! Live edge furniture is becoming increasingly popular due to its ability to honor the wood’s
natural beauty - imperfections and all. It fits well within the mid-century modern furniture trend, so
it’s no wonder so many people want this rustic yet modern look in their homes. I was commissioned
to create this gorgeous piece for my client’s work-from-home office and he only had a few requests:
live edge, walnut, simple leg design, and brass accents, all of which came together beautifully. The
simple and modern leg design allowed the walnut slab to have the attention it deserves.

that "total boat baby" still gets me every time haha
I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me chuckle
every time 😂
Honestly, first time seeing one of your videos & I wanted to let you know I'm subscribing specifically because you're one of few youtube woodworkers that actually talks about the need to finish every part of the board, even parts no one will ever see, to even out wood explansion/contraction.
Thanks very much, Karl! I greatly appreciate the kind words and the comment about finishing both sides. It's definitely something you learn the hard way if you don't do it!
Karl Ditto on everything you said!
I didn't think I would like the bowties sitting proud of the desktop, but what a great minimal accent! Great work!
Thanks so much!
Damn. You are one of the BEST people on the internet when it comes to talking to an audience. Very relaxed, with just the right amount of sensible humor to make for a really enjoyable experience. Some people are just plain ridiculous clowns when they talk. I wish more people had your kind of ease when talking to an audience and still being informative. I'll watch any video you post. Kudos!
Wow! Thanks so much for the comment and the kind words. You keep watching and I'll keep posting! 👍
I just want to say that I think most people underestimate the random orbital sander for doing a roundover. You won't get a really dramatic roundover without putting in a lot of work but you can get a very nice small one so easily. I personally use that technique quite a bit.
I definitely use it, but it's very easy to "over" round something very quickly and get an uneven profile, but practice makes perfect. 👍😎
Those bow ties, love the look of highly polished brass.
Thanks! Me too. Unfortunately, it doesn't stay that way for long 😜
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking That’s for sure. How do I know? Nine years in USN. They love their polished brass. 😁
@@pitsnipe5559 Haha. There you go. Thank you for your service!
Beautiful work, and that brass???? GRRRRrrrrrroooowl!
Thanks!! 🤙🏻😎
Great work from great team. Say hi to your hardworking coworkers Lola & Jerry ❤️😻😻 Thank you for sharing, I had great time ✌🏻🛠⚙️🥃
Thanks so much for watching!!
Nice! I really like how you ended up building the legs: nice way to minimize wood waste while beefing up the appearance. I also enjoy how you describe the thinking that lead you to do a certain process this or that way, very inspiring every time I watch one of your videos. And I'm always amazed at how Lola and Jerry behave in your workshop: mine would go crazy after a few minutes while yours appear so calm...
Thanks Jacques! I greatly appreciate the kind words. And it's a total mystery how Jerry and Lola tolerate all the noise and commotion out in the shop on a daily basis 😹
My God,this is nu just woodworking,is more like a opera! Congrats!
Too kind! Thank you very much! 🙏
now i know what is "Made with love" mean. Your attention to detail and commitment to doing things right is so nice to see
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻👍🏻
You should win an award for cramming as much tooling into your shop while still remaining a usable work area. Is your sock drawer as well organized?
😂😜 it’s definitely shoehorned in there! Thanks!
Good call on pillowing those bow ties. Gives it more depth. Awesome piece, Keith!
Thanks Jake!! I appreciate the comment and the kind words! 👍😎
Slick work Keith!! Went well with my Sunday morning Coffee and Pancakes.
Thanks Bart! That sounds delightful, by the way!
That looks stunning and the brass bow ties set it off
Thanks man! I really appreciate it.
that brass bow ties are so sweet.
Thanks a lot! I dig 'em, too! 😜
DAMN... That is an AMAZING Piece.!.!.! Well done, good sir...WELL DONE.!.!.!.!
Thanks very much! 👍🏻
Watching Your videos is like eating a cake! Thank You!
Glad I could supply your sugar fix! 🍰😜😂
Another classic Keith.
Thanks man! Had a lot of fun building this one! 👊
Keith you and I agree. We both said WOW at the same time during the beauty shots. 😄
Ha! Thanks! 😉😜
Is this going to become a habit? I watch your videos and see you easily turn out beautiful pieces AND teach everybody something every time! If it is, I'm all in!
That’s the plan! 😜😂
Wow Keith,
That was a big and heavy job. It looked beautiful! Wil-
Thanks Wil! My back is still in recovery mode 😂
Great video. Hubby & I loved seeing the shopcat Lola wandering around in the video!
Thanks Sue! Lola and Jerry love the shop! 😻
Well, this is what I call heavy duty joinery :) beautiful piece.
Thank you very much! It should hold 😜💪
Very nice desk. Those legs looked difficult. Some serious skill on that
Thanks Alan! They were definitely a challenge 👍🏻
Who needs a workout when you’ve got hand planes?! Beautiful work as always.
😂🤣 That’s the truth! And thanks very much 🙏🏻
All’s I can say is wow holy moly you are an amazing woodworker I’ve been watching your videos nonstop I’m so inspired thank you
Wow, thank you! Much appreciated, Thomas 🙏👊
Yes there was a LOT of assembly required. Especially as Lady Liberty did come without the rocky plinth... the rest was delivered as something like squareyard plates that had to be assembled around an interior skeleton. I had a storybook or maybe audiobook about this and the transatlantic cable they first laid in the 1870s when i was a child and it was fascinating.
👍😎
Daaaang Keith! That's a work of art!
Thank you so much! 🙏 🙌
CA glue save was rock solid man.
Thanks Matt! 👊
Ok Keith well done sir. Well done. Thank you for doing a base that you actually made.
Right on man! Thanks so much for the support. And building the bases are my favorite part!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking me and my 5 month old son watched it this morning . Everything in his bedroom I made with walnut so I love the inspiration.
@@joelw6215 Oh my! That's awesome!
Nice job!
Goes well with that Room & Board cabinet.
🙏🏻👍🏻
Great piece Keith. Enjoyed the video and the detail.
Thanks very much! Glad you liked it 👍🏻
She's a beaut, Clark!
😂 Dug it out of the ground myself!
Those brass bowties match the aesthetic so damn well. I'm loving the use of new tech to get what you need. I understand the appeal of pure handcrafting with chisels, but in the end it's still about the end result.
Thanks so much! And yes, I'm all about using technology to allow more speed and creativity. 👍😎
You never disappoint Mr. Johnson. Beautiful project.
Much appreciated, Jeff! Thank you sir!
Im always so jealous of woodworkers, All that beatufull "scarp" wood would be so nice for a knife handle
Send me a pre-paid box and I'll throw a pile of scraps in it!
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking oh I'd love to but I think it would be more expensive than just buying from a local wood supplier. Thank you so much for the offer though!
Nice job, love them bow ties
Thank you! Cheers!
Another amazing build Keith! I’ve been home visiting my folks after not seeing them for several years because I work as an EMT and we really enjoy watching your videos together. I’ve been attempting at building them a lot of new stuff around the house. Thanks for everything you post. Woodworking has turned out to be an amazing stabilizer for my mental well being. Oh and sometimes cool stuff appears…
That's awesome, Anderson! So glad you were able to see your folks and take in some woodworking entertainment along the way! And that's so great woodworking has been able to give you such a mental lift. 👊
Well…..just like always…..you knocked it out of the park! That desk is gorgeous!!! Great work Keith. Really enjoyed watching that. Thank you!
thanks a lot, Mike! Super appreciate that! 👊🏻
You killed this one, turned out great. Curious though, lets say you couldn't use a Shaper origin for the bow ties what would be your approach? Make a router template, free hand with router and clean up with a chisel, or something else? I'm a lifelong Seinfeld fan, love the references you throw in.
Yes! You could absolutely make a template with the Shaper for bowties. You could set the machine to cut on the outside of your line to cut the bowties, and then make a temple by cutting on the inside of the line and they should mate together perfectly. And so glad you appreciate the Seinfeld references!!
I’m very impressed with your skills, very nice start to finish!!
Thank you! Cheers!
From another Steve that is getting into woodworking as well and loves Walnut too. This thing is amazing, great work!!
Thanks very much! Word of caution…once you go walnut…😜
Shop cat 2:58.
Amazing work!
Thanks!! 😺
Anything you need buddy! 😘 turned out great!
You rock! Thanks dude! 👊
Beauty-full.
Thank you!
Great video, as usual. Caught that Keith's Johnson joke. Very subtle and classy. LOL. I remember that the Egyptians used to worship cats as if they were gods and I've always thought that they believed this because cats believe it to be true as well. At 8:41, that pose is definitely the pose of a being that thinks you are beneath it and you should worship it.
😂 Oh yes, these cats definitely rule the household...we are just her for food, water and shelter!
I'm a big fan of your videos Keith, love the techniques, as well as the commentary which on occasion has some comedic factor. Great job!
Much appreciated, Caleb!! Thanks very much! I occasionally try to be funny 😜
Magnifique. Très beau travail. J adore. Merci beaucoup pour vos vidéos. Caresses à mr jerry.
Thank you! 😺
Love the Table AND your Cats! 😀
Thank you! 😊 😺
Nice! My wife got me the same electric hand planner for Father's day. I remember when you collaborated with Bourbon Moth and he "called" you, you were working on the big leg. Haha Love what you guys do!
Haha! Yes! He always calls at the most inconvenient times 😜😂
Keith and Jason are probably the best woodworking content creators on TH-cam right now. The greatest part about them is the sense of humour they both share. Hey, Keith, you should do that more often, maybe start a joint venture or your own brand or something in those lines...."Johnson and Hibbs" or "Hibbs and Johnson "
wow!!!very beautyful!!!!good job!!!best regards
Thank you kindly! 😁
Love, love, love the level of process detail, just chock full of great info and insight. Understanding how to do something is great, but with so many interesting custom features, explaining the why behind it the way you do is really priceless. Great video!
Thanks so much! So glad it was helpful and I greatly appreciate the feedback! 👍 🙌
Thanks Keith. Absolutely fantastic.
Rock on! Thanks David 💪👊
I like the prefinish detail. nice touch. good job
Thanks a lot! 👍🏻
Lol! Keith’s Johnson. Love that. Hahaha!
😜😂 The boys at Willard Bros. punked me on that one!
Very nice, I like how the brass bow ties turned out

those brass ties are slickkkkkk

Hey Wild Man! LOVED this video. The longer the video the better. Beautiful desk, great video work, editing and commentary. Thanks! (am I still hearing the soft ruffle of flannel?) 👍
Awesome, thank you! Glad you liked the longer format...it's always a gamble! 😂
That is beautiful! Those brass bow ties really make it.
Thank you! Cheers!
First time TH-cam fed me your channel. Super impressed with your work. High skill, loads of experience and style. Subscribed because of your detailed narration. You explained everything so well without long winded explanations.
Awesome! Thanks Doug. I greatly appreciate the comment and the kind words about my content! Hope you find my other videos equally as agreeable! 🙏🏻👊🏻
Another beautiful build! Thanks for the tip on the white pencil too. Works great without being too brittle. Digging the pink butterflies too! 😆
Thanks Eric! And dang those butterflies. LOL.
This build was well worth the wait. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this project and as always, turned out to be a work of art. Good luck on the next builds Keith!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for the kind words.
Gorgeous build. Amazing attention to detail and execution. Love the longer videos. I’m as hooked on your videos as Kramer is to Kenny’s hot chicken.
😂😆 Thanks Matt! And that's the perfect Seinfeld analogy... because "it's the wood that makes it good"
@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking 😂😂

Keith if you don’t mind me ask ; What kind of small bandsaw you have in your videos . I would like to know , not the big one . The one with a small table .

While I've done a couple of these types of desks, those legs were amazing! Beautiful skill and creativity.

Ha! I’ll take it! We were both born in the Boston area, so it makes sense 😜
You should do a shop tour. Looks like we have the same size garage and I struggle for space
Eventually I will. I have a lot of shop improvements I want to do before I unveil my set up.
