For electric I've had better luck with low end (pawn shop or squire - donner esque) guitars, and just adding to them. The wood is a choice to you, I personally only go for weight and feel for electrics, then the electronics are fully up to you. I've saved thousands by upgrading the cheap stuff.
Ive moded out my thinline tele with a new bridge neck and la brea pickups. I love it. But I've always wondered if I should change the electronics too

Depends- this guitar was picked up for next to nothing so even if you put $300-$400 into it, it is still much cheaper.
