The owner just recently purchased this new Epiphone Dave Mustaine Custom Flying V electric guitar and he was interested in a setup. He also wanted to change to locking tuners and new bridge - both from Gotoh. Unfortunately, the tuners didn't fit but the rest of the work was completed without a hitch. It's a very nice guitar, if you like Flying Vee's!

Godin Stadium HT Guitar - Setup & a Tuning Machine Issue

This really nice Godin Stadium HT electric guitar was brought to my shop by the owner for a setup. I must admit that I am impressed by the build quality - made in Canada!. It is similar to a Telecaster but with its own set of Godin pickups; branded Godin tuners and a maple body. Sets up well but I did find a small problem with a tuning machine... the gfs xtrem is a way better than these Chinese Bigsby knockoffs...........i have 3 of their stud mount xtrems and they are even better than the Korean made licensed Bigsby b50......i have one real American made Bigsby b6 and the xtrems i have are nearly as good as it is at a much cheaper price..........
Never cared for how cheap the ferrule style tailpiece felt on even the Gibson versions.
Perhaps the noise the customer is hearing manifests when using distortion...
Hey I know that Flying V 😜 great setup … and yeah those locking Gotoh tuners were on sale at my local guitar parts shop, didn’t think about checking the string post height but these are the “MGT” tuners which have an 18mm post height on the shorter tuners… will watch out for this next time Cheers 🍻
I wouldn't replace the tunes. I would have figured the client would want the same bridge that comes on the custom. Those Pickups are hot, I back my bridge off just a little and max it out when I solo.
As soon as you sat that guitar on the bench, I thought to myself I bet it would look better with Cosmo Black or black nickel or black Chrome hardware. I guess the owner thought the same thing. I’m sure someone makes a black chrome V plate to black out the hardware completely. I would have thought the Gotoh would’ve dropped in the tuners especially. Since I put locking tuners on my guitar I usually do two strings at once whatever strings are in the same pack or with dadarrio I would do the low e and a and work my way to the high e. I’m old school because I change strings on a Floyd Rose guitar one string at a time remove one and replace it, it’s the way I learned to be able to change strings on a floating trem without fighting it for hours to get it in tune. I used to could replace a set stretch them and lock it down in around 30 or so minutes doing it one string at a time. It might sound tedious but if your guitar is set up right and you don’t change brand or gauge strings it’s the most reliable way for anyone new to FR to replace their strings without losing their minds getting it in tune and at the correct zero point. Those Gotoh tuners come in staggered post lengths to make the break angle over the nut correct, but I guess they sell non staggered sets too but they only have three different post heights and I guess the overall thickness of the headstock could come into play. I’ve got two medium posts on my Kramer Beretta for the low end and a and 4 shot posts for the rest and I believe my Ibanez has three medium and three shorts or maybe medium and long anyway the posts on those Gotoh are supposed to be really low to the face of the headstock for the correct nut break angle since you can’t rely on wraps to get the angle right. I would’ve thought the Kramer and Epiphone headstock in that shape would be about the same ?
😊la classe !👍👌
Jamais essayé le pigtail :-)
I would’ve put some lapping compound on that broken string and ran it back and forth in the groove/ saddle slot to lower that string to keep it the right size. I envy you so much for getting to do this, much respect for your work.
Thanks -good idea
Nice idea for heating! To the comment below about heating and re-fretting: You left out a key detail. He can try "compression" fretting the neck as well before tossing neck. Of course with the Squire, probably get one cheap, but if it's something custom and not available, could definitely try compression fretting in conjunction with heating as well and much more percentage of success in keeping neck from reverting back to previous bent position. This method is used on guitar necks all the time. Harpeth Guitar Restroration site has a great vid on compression fretting on a classical guitar and Dan Erlewine"s fret book has an example of using heat in conjunction with compression fretting. I'm going to try this on a custom fretless bass tomorrow and see what happens. I usually use a heat lamp. Interesting to compare.
The ESP Alexi V cases are even larger and heavier 😂

I bought a couple of telecaster style guitars and tremolos for them similar to the one you installed. I didn't pay much for the guitars or the tremolos so I don't want to pay the cost of a vibramate install bridge.Do you know of another brand of bridge I could order that would not have to be altered that would allow the strings to pass through? The current bridges have four screws in them. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Where’d you get the 4/64ths feeler gauge from?
you can buy my String & pickup height gauges at www.manotickstringworks.com Thanks.
What is the correct pick up height ? Was the pick up height Ok on this maintenance ?
I like to use 1/8" (3.2mm) on the bass side and 3/32" (2.4mm) on the treble side; hold the string down on the last fret and then measure the space between the underside of the string and the top of your pickup pole pieces
I just put a tusq nut on my 2018 player telecaster and the guitar is briter. I set up the guitar and I was thinking about the bridge. I was looking at Wilkerson brass saddle bridge.... not sure, still researching.... what is your opinion on it ❓ or put a G&L ASAT bridge on it. Wilkerson has a adjustable compensated 3 brass saddle bridge
I like 6 saddles every time -try out the G&L style bridge. Musiclily on Amazon has a nice version that isnt very costly. "Musiclily Pro 54mm Modern Telecaster Bridge with Barrel Brass 6-Saddle for Tele Style Electric Guitar"
I wonder if I can use that bridge on my 2018 fender player telecaster
I bought a road series made in Mexico Martin, it is all wood not laminate so I got it, it is the worst guitar ever. action came high enough for goats to jump off. and sounds cheap .
A Vee, it's right on the outside of the case!!!
LOL - good eye!
Shouldn't you be measuring in playing position?
@@garycreary7550 you can measure i the olayingmposition or on a bench top- just do it the same way each time
I would have liked to hear it.
Thought it was going to be 2 Epiphones inverted or a 1275 double neck. Wrong and wrong again.
newbie here...when you adjusted the bridge pickup the screw was sticking way the heck out...how do you make that look like its supposed to (make the head of the screw sit flush with the pick guard)?
lol -I had to look back at that video from a while back. The screw was well below the string and sometimes they will not sit flush with the bridge plate. Could be stuck in the rubber adjustment bushing a little bit. If it bothers you on your guitar, you will have to remove the bridge and check or replace the adjustment bushings.
@@ManotickGuitarTech check or replace the adjustment bushings...awesome! Thank you!
Would you have a video on slotting the bridge to get a better break angle of the strings. I lowered the saddle 1.5 mm and the break angle is too shallow now. Some buzzing on a few strings, which is annoying. The saddle was only lowered after the truss rod was adjusted. I do have gauged files and did a little bit of filing to achieve a better angle for each strings, but didn't want to file too deeply until I spoke with someone like yourself with more experience in doing a job like this. Thanks in advance and very well explained video. Phil
I dont have a specific video but look up Ted Woodford on TH-cam - he has several. TWOODFRD

@ Great. Thanks Steve.
The fret erasers are a great tool of help Steve.🎸👍
Wow Steve great video. The time you took to show how to set up a Strat is greatly appreciated! What used to seem like rocket science is now understandable!!! I now have the confidence to work on my own very similar Stat and my 40th Anniversary Tele. I'm not sure if I have the 40th correct but it has the gold pick guard. I've been doing some work on my acoustics but my Strats and Teles have been taken to the local luthier. But I just found a Squire LTD Classic Vibe 60s that weighs only 7 lbs. My Teles are Thilines so they are around 7lb also. I'm retired and too old for a 9+ lb Tele or LP. I will be ordering your tools very soon. I have been gradually buying setup tools so I'm going to copy you on the Hosco nut files and that Peterson Strobe tuner you have on your bench. I will be saving about $240 because my new Strat and one of my Thin lines needs work and I'll just use that money for the tuner and other tools. I will be very careful about working on the nut, It looks like I could mess up fast if I take off too much at one swipe. I will go back and watch some of your videos a lot closer before I do any work on the nut. Do you know if anyone in the US sells a similar Stat nut. The one you used looked like it was spot on except for the low E. Sorry for the long comment, just pumped to do my own work!!!
@@jameshicks6990 easy to mess up a nut, but also easy and relatively cheap for a new one!
Thanks Steve, currently eyeballing this one.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure the reverse phase knob works when the pickup selector is in the middle position... ie the pickupS go out of phase.
In order to uncomplicated string height being wrong when adjusting the neck relief shouldn’t you use the straight edge tool with the notches cut out of it and the put a feeler gauge on the neck surface up to the bottom of your notched straight edge ruler? Reason being if your saddles are high or low you’ll get a false reading of neck relief? I’m having that exact problem. After setting my relief and now adjusting string height I no longer have relief when retesting it. My 6th string is touching the 7th fret
the nut was better as it was low, wasn't it? Leaving it high makes the chords sound sharp, what do you gain from that?
@@diogo.músico the nut slots were cut too deep and the strings were buzzing against the frets... there has to be some room for the string to vibrate freely
@ManotickGuitarTech opening the slots for the strings to vibrate freely is a good point but what's the problem with the buzz? everyone complains about this, seems a bit overrated, most of the buzz is only audible when the guitar is unplugged and even when it is audible with it on, especially with bass, it gives character to the sound, tons of great guitar and bass players have buzz , their master bass and guitar tracks are full of buzz, listening the instrumental is imperceptible.. Listen to Otherside, the isolated bass track .. tons of buzz .. did anyone complain about when listen on the radio ? No because it is inaudible
I have the J Bass version of that Guitar, plays as well as a US.
@@JeffWok nice!
I have the same color same guitar. I changed the tuners, trem system to Wilkinson system.😊 Great guitar.
@@Patriot1777 feels real solid
Can I ask why Luthiers do the pickup height adjustment LAST? Wouldn’t you adjust the pickup height AFTER setting up the action height, and BEFORE intonation? Because the pickup heights can and will affect intonation???
@@thegoodguy44 fair point- if the pickups look way too high or low, I will adjust them before the setup then after.
@@ManotickGuitarTech Next time you do a video like this, do you mind doing it your way, like in this video, and then adding something like, "I got a comment from a viewer asking if PU height adjustment being done at the end of a setup will affect previously adjusted intonation to a point where there is an issue". It is a kind of specific setup you would need to be doing though. It needs you to be lowering or raising the pickups the amount that you did in this video. From just watching, it looked like you lowered the bass side possibly 3mm for each pickup. I don't think a 1mm adjustment up or down could cause a a noticeable issue, but 2 or 3 mm, that is 3 magnets either being raised or lowered (in this case) away from the low E & A strings. I'm not saying that you are doing it wrong because I've never seen another luthier do it the way I'm suggesting, but I find it almost impossible to believe that the bass side would not be now out by at least 2 or 3 cents on the tuner. I'm very happy for you to prove me wrong if that is the case. Love your content!
Those pickups still looked very high even after adjustment
@@thegoodguy44 true- the neck sits a little higher off the body so the pickup covers are more exposed
Change strings every couple of weeks? I need money for food Steve.

You can't string your own guitar That's just sad. It's not rocket science these guys get $60 an hour The first thing you should do when you buy a guitar is learn how to string it simple as that. Truss rod away from me lowers the strings pulling the truss rod back raises the strings buy a gauge to gauge your strings. You only turn a quarter turn each time you use your truss rod then you check it then you you tune it every time you use a truss rod you tune your guitar
