  • We have arrived in Wyoming! In this episode we are Dispersed in Wyoming on our way to the Monument Ridge Trail. We found a place boondocking near Grand Teton on the off road Greys River Wyoming that makes a perfect home for the night. Alicia is still a bit nervous camping in bear country and especially tent camping in Wyoming, where grizzly bears are known to habitate.
Our goal for this leg of our trip is to go to one of the more famous Jeep Trails in Wyoming, made popular by the Jeep Badge of Honor App.
After a freeze dried meal we chose to keep the smells down, we enjoy a campfire and turn in for the night. The next morning we explore our campsite in search of flowers and enjoy the sound of the river. All seems fine until we arrive at the trail that will take us to Monument Ridge. The Wyoming weather starts to turn and though we decide to continue on, the unpredictable weather conditions may become a challenge.
This was our first time being Dispersed in Wyoming, and was a learning experience. Our Patriot Campers X1-H proved to be up to the task and had provided the comfort we needed for the journey. More to follow in Part Two of this adventure!

Used to work up the Greys in 1981. Had a grizzly come walking up to us about 20 yards away. Great fishing and awesome country

We’ve fallen in love with that area. Such a beautiful drive watching the river grow from south to north. No grizz for us, but we were told there are a few in the area. Thanks for watching!

@@SixOverland they used to let troubled bears from Yellowstone in there back in the 80s. I was working with a big game guide from afton and he almost pooped himself when we saw it. We used to fly over that whole area in helicopters and I’ll never forget coming over the top of a mountain and seeing a massive 8x8 mule deer. I’ll never forget that. Biggest one I’ve ever seen. Always wanted to hunt the area but could never afford it. Jealous of you guys out there. I’m in Minnesota.

It is not pepper spray on steroids. It’s just a really big can of pepper spray. I live in Wyoming. That is a beautiful area. You can cook regular food. Just don’t leave anything out when you are done. Clean everything up, don’t even leave peanut shells. Typically what you doing is not the problem, it’s what the people before you did.

Bear spray does work but some bears run into the spray still attacking you, always have a gun for secondary defense

A 10MM is good if the spray doesn't work.

Fun fact. Bear spray is a lot less concentrated than regular pepper spray. Works great on bears because their sense of smell is amazing. Wouldn’t work nearly as well as pepper spray to deter a human. I watched a video with some guides from Alaska that had many grizzly encounters under their belts. They personally carried revolvers in chest holsters, chambered with .454 Casull cartridges, in addition to bear spray. That fire power is outright horrifying. I don’t think a grizzly would get deterred by banging pots and pans. Hopefully caution, common sense food/trash handling, and heightened awareness will work. If that fails, bear spray might do the trick. If that fails, it’s probably too late for the firearm, but I’d still want to carry one in grizzly country 😀

I live in this area.. there isn’t much for Grizz until Jackson area. The other side of snake river Canyon. Or Idaho area.. very small amount down greys river.. As far as deterrent, bleach works pretty good. As far as banging pots and pans.. it all depends on the Bear and how hungry it is. Also if it has youngins. Plenty of Black bears though. I’ve seen false charges that standing tall and making noise works, but we’ve also had people attacked by Grizz armed with a large caliber pistol amd a elk rifle. The Grizz have got to know the elk season here, and after hearing a rifle shot, will investigate somewhat and get the scent when we field dress the elk and come try to take it. Bears are very individualistic and what works for one might not for another. Thing is, in the mountains and in the woods l, they are usually on you before you can get the pistol or rifle on them for a shot. Like two years ago a guide got killed by a Grizz. He knew his stuff, and the bear was on him and a client before he could get the pistol on him. The guide somewhow got the pistol out and threw it to the client. It was a 10mm semi auto. The client didn’t know how to operate, dropped the magazine out of it, panicked, and threw it at the back towards the guide and ran.. guide didn’t make it. It was a pretty big loss to the community.. anyways, don’t store your food around where you camp, and use tight containers that don’t release scent. Even then we usually pulley them up in the trees, or keep them in a vehicle.
      Ya never know with Grizz.
Don’t know if ya ever shot a 454 casull.. but they are hella hard to control and hit anything with that’s moving that fast.. It wants to jump out your hand.
Almost forgot.. make sure you have bear spray, and do everything ya can to not have to shoot a Grizzly.. if you weren’t really in danger, didn’t try other methods to stop them, and kill one.. be prepared to be locked up with a huge fine.. It’s federally protected. Some sorry sucka tried to say he was in danger and wasn’t. Them game wardens can tell what happened after like a CSI crime scene. He got in huge trouble.
As far as bear spray, make sure your not spraying against the wind also. Some tourists have actually sprayed themselves down with bear spray as to not get attacked😂

White noise- especially rushing water sounds- is the greatest invention for our modern civilization. I use a looping 1 hour recording of a mountain stream at night. Earplugs are too uncomfortable.
