This scene is one of the biggest problems of this movie. Why would you let the first alien ever found/caught, alone in a huge room with ONE interrogator? No camera's nothing. Who wrote this script?

There would be dozens of cameras, psychologists, biologists, experienced interrogators, etc. ALL watching this happen. The fact that they're using such sophisticated equipment says they suspect he could be telling the truth.
Even in standard police interrogations there's someone watching, so why is NO ONE ELSE WATCHING???

Also the interviewer can give the exact distances. Lucky they calibrated the alien for yards and not with the metric system. He would be fked not knowing what 1 meter means.

I was coming home one night from work in New Milford Ct and decided to take a different route home than usual. I was heading north on Ct rte 7 in the town of Kent. I didn't know they were filming the "swamp scene" there. I come across this scene with a bunch of vehicles and these huge spotlights lighting up everything and I had no clue what was going on. I drove through and found out the next day at work what it was all about. Good thing they weren't filming an "alien" scene or a saucer landing, I would have sheet my pants.

It's an amusing irony that when media companies lobby for control of their intellectual property, they always stress that consumers don't own anything - we are merely renting/licensing views from them on their terms.
Yet, in all their ads these same companies still say that we can "own" these works. And they wonder why people are confused! I guess "license some views as long as it's convenient for us" doesn't make such good ad copy.

I love the dichotomy of the technological capabilities displayed here. The aliens don't just have greater technology; they have the ability to interact with technology in a way that human's can't comprehend. We use a machine, and it detects lies. They use the same machine, and it extracts truth.

And anyone that works with him, or even knows him, never has anything but kind words about him. I hope he influences the younger generation. The world needs more people like him. Desperately.

This was a remake. Not as meaningful as the original given the time period it came out but I enjoyed this version, too.

Keanu did this film with Marvel’s Silver Surfer in mind. He wanted that role and said so publicly. This script was a clever move - allowing Keanu to play the role that originally inspired Stan Lee’s 1968 solo Surfer comic series with John Buscema. Go back and watch the original 1951 TDTEST and make note of the scene where Klaatu turns off the world’s electricity. Then, read Silver Surfer No.3 where SS does the same thing - briefly - before restoring power to the world. This modern version of the story saves that power as the lasting result of a compromise to save human civilization.

I know of people that won't watch older classic movies like this one and Forbidden Planet simply because they aren't modern... For these, people, the only version they know is the new one, if such even exists.

I got to see the remake on a BIG screen, one step smaller than IMax with a state of the art sound system. When those aliens sounded their alarm (?) it was bone rattling, chilling to the bone. TH-cam videos don't do it justice.
So I would like to see a remake of Forbidden Planet and Tom is certainly capable. But a remake of would have to be honestly genuine not a woke cash grab.

Keanu reeves isn’t the greatest actor, he’s got his moments in devils advocate and the gift but when he does certain movies it fits him like a glove.
I don't know about certain movies, given that this is the only one that I'm aware of where his talent is used well.

When this movie first came out people said it was trash , but I loved this movie!!!
The science fiction element in it is interesting. How great it would be if this were true, benevolent advanced neighbouring aliens who care enough to give us a second chance. I truly believe the next challenge is to change human nature to allow us to survive on this rock long enough at least to get the technology to help us get off it and spread elsewhere which is necessary. Look at the news, every year now there is a new crisis, viruses, wars between superpowers.

The question about him being seated is the only one that counts as a “control” question, since it’s the only one they already have the answer to. Since they don’t know whether he’s from Earth, they don't immediately know if he’s a human or feels pain. The point of the control questions is to establish a baseline for how the machine reads his vitals when he’s obviously stating the truth.
@Ryan you are correct. He had no idea whether he was being truthful about the second and third question. However, I guess you can think he just asked 2 really weak questions.

This clip doesn't depict the whole artist's vision. You clip away before you see the tear from the interrogator. I think (Alien)Keenu showed him how petty and insignificant humanity was compared to the universe's infinite lifeforms; maybe gave him a glimpse of what humanity is capable of achieving as well. Either way, it made him start to ball and begged to take him with him off this planet.

I agree completely. While this wasn't the worst movie, it had multiple flaws. All the Special/Visual Effects won't help any movie against a classic one, if it has a horrible script/acting. This is one of those...
The original is sooo good. Easily the most thoughtful science fiction movie of its decade. It has everything, great plot, characters, acting, direction, music, cinematography and top notch special effects (given the day). A favorite.
@@AlanCanon2222 I completely agree. Being 51 years old now, I always encourage the younger crowd to watch the old classic SciFi movies. At the time it was state of art scifi. What really made those movies was the music. Followed by the sound effects. Forbidden Planet for example. Masterpiece.

The set and its lighting (did you notice how casually PATRICIA NEAL just saunters out and off that craft, like she's used to doing it) Rennie's height, face, Lincoln-like stance and delivery nailed it (although Valiant THOR did not have a British accent. You had to be there)!

Being of a certain age, I am a big fan of the original movie. (Also a fan of Patricia Neal). The original was, at least IMHO, a much better movie.
This is NOT "The Day the Earth Stood Still". This is a damn remake that didn't need to be done. 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' is STILL the DEFINITIVE Science Fiction movie. Period.
