I love how Smith shoots Neo without any sort of pause or hesitation. No taunt or monologue. He just fires.
He already did his monologue in their fight before this.
The actor talked about how he came up with the voice of Dr. Smith. It was based on a newscast of a newscaster he had heard. He was looking for something that was neither human nor robotic, the voice of a program. Then he hears this guy doing a newscast in a certain tone and manner for 10 seconds or so and decides that Dr. Smith should speak in that tone and voice for the entire film.

Indeed. Smith is aprogram, and neo at that moment pro-reads all his actions. Thats what he actually does as the One. Reads/Writes/edits the programs around him
I don't like the bravado that Neo shows though. Putting his hand on his hip and using one hand. It's unnecassary. I always thought it silly and brings me out of the moment. I think they could have had Neo do this one handed without the so obvious standing to the side and hand on hip. Shame. Otherwise a perfect scene.
@@gonnahavemesomefun Isn't that the point though? It's at this moment that he realizes his true powers and loses his fear of the agents. He realizes that he can now fight and even beat Smith without even breaking a sweat. That he doesn't even need to use both his arms. That he doesn't even need to face or look at him. At this point it's not a fight anymore, it's just him testing out what he can do. The way he deliberately turns and puts his arm behind his back is his reaction to the realization "holy crap, I don't even need to try anymore" and I think the scene portrays this perfectly.
One of the best moments in movie history, the symbolism of seeing the matrix code…seeing all the lies around you for what they really are…

I always loved Neo's nonchalant "..no" line right before stopping the bullets. Its like he had become so powerful and realized how small and insignificant his surroundings are now.
Yea, he realises that it's all fake. He died and came back, imagine that realisation, it's instantly makes it impossible to believe any of it is real.
It's like lucid dreaming. You 'wake up', realise you're omnipotent and nothing threatens you anymore. When those bullets come flying he's like 'no' because he realises there *are* no bullets.

No matter how many times I see this, the way Fishburn says 'He is the One' always gives me goosebumps.
It's a good thing they stopped after just one movie. Any sequels or remakes would just ruin the original story and tarnish it's memory.

Saying things are underrated is overrated.
The detail that i love in this movie is that agent smith is the only one who took off his glasses revealing early on that he is more human (in addition main villain) than any other agent and the only one in this scene to display emotion, plus that his glasses are transparent enough to see his eyes.... Simply brilliant

The kiss simply triggered a physical connection from the real world and made him realize he's just in the matrix. Neo was looking clean even after they shot him, others usually bleed out of their mouths to reflect the mental damage

I like Smith's attitude. Even when he knew he was fighting an opponent more powerful than him, he fought till the end. When Neo was jumping to get inside him, he still tried to punch. The most effective move till the last moment. The tenacity of a machine.

I'm already 20 and the first time I watched The Matrix was when I was about 9 or 10. Neo, Apoc, and Switch were my favorites and when I saw Apoc and Switch die cause of Cypher, I was upset. But this part where Neo dies made me shed tears cause Neo's my most favorite and when Neo died I said,
"No! Not Neo too!!!" I couldn't watch anymore after that. But after Trinity kissed him, my stepdad said,
"Look kiddo." While he was smiling and when it showed Neo opening his eyes, I was both shocked and happy. And I said,
"He's alive!!!" And when the agents were shooting at him, I got all worried and said,
"Neo!!!" But when he stopped the bullets, I said,
"Whoa! How did he do that?!" Then my stepdad said,
"He's the one." At the same exact time Morpheus said it. This was the part where Neo became my most favorite on The Matrix
I like how Neo tolerates the first shot, convincing his mind it isn’t real. The next shots rattle him too much, though.

I was born in '91 and I can safely say this was the most influential movie scene in my lifetime.
This scene is legendary, because it shows where Neo ceases to be Thomas Anderson. Notice how Smith says "Goodbye Mr. Anderson".

It's so amazing that there's a practical answer to why things happen in this scene (the kiss revives Neo, the sparks flying in the ship) but it's also pure poetry.

The moment when those last 2 agents run is my favorite moment, because remember what all red pills say, they say if you see an agent... run, you run your ass off, but with Neo, the agents run from him, simply amazing

That's the reason the Oracle told Trinity that "The One" would be the one she falls in love with. Her admitting that she loves him to Neo after he died unlocked his potential. Oracle said he has the gift, but was waiting for something. This is exactly what he was waiting for, even though it was completely unknown to him. Had the Oracle not told Trinity about loving "The One", she would've never realized that was a requirement and wouldn't have said/admitted what she did. Trinity is a reference to "The Holy Trinity" in the Bible, The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Here, it's Trinity, Neo, and the Oracle.
This whole movie is probably just a fantasy that the guy in office space had while at work lol

One of the greatest scenes ever filmed. And the more you understand the full story the greater it becomes.
The Matrix trilogy contains lots of spiritual symbolism which goes overlooked on the first pass.
I was 19 when this movie came out, I had a religious experience while watching it on LSD in a packed theater opening night. I saw it 14 times that summer and I've probably watched it close to if not more than 5 thousand times. And this ending is still one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Your statement is one of the truest statements ever. It truly does.

Yeah the Sequels really nerfed the fuck out of Neo. At the end of this movie, he becomes a god-like being who sets out to tear down the entire system, but they retconned it with Reloaded sadly. They should've probably just made one more film where we see Neo freeing everyone and the Machines reacting/responding to that.

@@FredrickTesla I heard somewhere, (not sure if this is true), that they'd originally planned the second film to be a prequel showing the POV of the machines and how they rose to power, but the studio nixed that idea. I think if the second film had been a prequel, and the third film showed Neo confronting the machines shortly after the first film, it would've worked a lot better as a trilogy.

I dont know why but this scene triggers a very strong emotion in me. As if I am watching manifestation of a Messiah. The Matrix is a timeless iconic classic. No movie can capture the dystopian, cyberpunk culture like this one film.
I like how the original Bladerunner suggests ”what’s real and what’s not” in a more subtle way.
I remember not hearing about this when it came out and still guessed the main theme before the pill-scene. Dark City released previous year 1998 and also had lots of similarities with Matrix.
So here’s the thing. This movie was so groundbreaking in so many ways, introducing new technology, camera angles, unused tropes etc that when Neo got shot I was actually convinced that they killed him. Like another new thing this movie was doing, killing off the main hero to concentrate on the survivors back on the ship. I know it’s sound stupid (and I wasn’t even that young, 19 or something) but it’s true nonetheless.
I can still remember that spine-tingling, hair-raising, eyes-watering feeling when Neo stood back up.
It’s even more special because I know it will probably never happen again, can’t be fooled too many times, especially in today’s Hollywood.

For those who don't understand this scene, it's very simple. Basically, it's saying that love is the most real thing there is, and therefore, is the only thing capable of breaking the illusion of death. Neo uses his mind to master every aspect of the Matrix; however the idea of death is a "program" too powerful for the mind to see through. The only way to do so is to see with one's heart. Remember the line, "don't think you are, know you are." When it comes "knowing" that one is eternal, this knowledge can only come from the heart, AKA the perspective of oneness through love. It is precisely this perspective that allows him to fully lift the veil off the Matrix and see it for what it really is. The calmness he displays as the One does not come from belief; it comes from KNOWING. What is this "knowing"? Well, it's exactly what the Oracle told him: "It means Know Thyself." In short, the takeaway is that the agents (which symbolize the power of fear) only exist in the mind; they have no authority in your heart (AKA the feeling of love), where you are one with reality, which IS the reality of who you truly are. This is why Neo is finally able to fly in the end, because he finally defeats the illusion of fear (that fear is symbolized at the start of the film through his fear of heights). Thus , he becomes weightless-which, from personal experience, is exactly what being free of fear is like. It feels like flying.

This whole film is a masterpiece that gives me chills and this is one those scenes that never fails to give me goosebumps...it's sad the sequels couldn't live up to this classic(though Reloaded is underappreciated and revolutions wasn't as bad many made out to be, resurrections was also solid and i had my fingers tightly crossed hoping that somehow they'd be able to recapture the magic from this movie but unfortunately there's some things not even Keanu Reeves can do

I remember seeing this and thinking Neo is dead. I couldn't believe it. He had been shot 10 times and was gone.
It was such a shock when he gets back up. We are told "when you die in the real world, you die in the matrix." So when he gets up and stops the bullets mid air I was in complete disbelief. Then when he isn't even looking but blocking every punch thrown by Smith, and when he enters his body, absolute shock. Right up until this point the audience has bought into the idea that Morpheus was wrong, the prophecy isn't true and Neo is just a man. Mind blowing.
There was never a moment like this in the sequels.
