I made this soup (as written) about a week ago. It was my first time cooking with lentils, and I can’t believe how easy and delicious this soup was. I couldn’t stop eating it. I’m going to be making this soup a lot. Thank you for a great healthy recipe.
I'm glad you are going to make this recipe! But you don't have to soak the lentils. They are fine right out of the bag to cook. Hope you enjoy the recipe!
The pan I used is hard anodized aluminum made by Circulon. It's non toxic and safe. I haven't owned Teflon pans for years now that there is a safe alternative.
That looks awesome, I can't wait to try it! I love lentil soup. On another note, my ears hurt from the sound of that metal spoon scraping against the non-stick pan haha. Makes me shudder.
The pan is made by Circulon. It holds up very well to metal spoons, but after many years of using the pan the coating can slowly go fade away.. You can buy them at Macy's and you should be able to find them on Amazon.
Your soup looks delicious . Can you add any type of pureed tomatoes ? I was expecting an Italian soup to have some kind of cheese sprinkled on top. I assume these soup is so tasty by itself the cheese is not needed :) thank you for sharing your recipe.
Lentils are naturally gluten free but are sometimes grown near grains and can get cross contaminated but you may be able to find gluten free labeled lentils at your store. Check the label. Good luck!
Lentil question...any time I've ever cooked these, the lentil skin always remains intact, they don't really soften up as much as I would like. Is that just how they are?
@@dianesworldkitchen I've been using green lentils. Can't imagine there'd be much difference, but maybe. I always cook them for at least an hour to hour and 15 minutes before they are done. IDK. I'll try presoaking them with a little baking soda like I do my beans. They always come out good.
@@zippy2641 I think the green lentils might not be a good idea for this soup. I live them for other recipes, but the brown lentils will soften the right way and have a whole different flavor. Let me know if you get to make the soup with brown lentils.
@@genevekisson8639 it isn't necessary to wash the lentils. Also i don't own teflon. That pan is hard anodized aluminum. Thanks for your thoughts though.

That's so great to hear!
Good job. I love lentil soup. Next time I’ll make it your way. Thanks, Bob Campbell
I added Smoked Ham Hocks and slow cooked it for 3 1/2 hrs. Really made the soup.
@@MeganWilton-z4k that sounds so good!
My favorite soup wasn’t aware about using only brown lentils. I lol give’em a try. Thank you for sharing ❤
It really creates a special flavor and the lentils hold up well. Enjoy the recipe!
Looks tasty! I have a bag of lentils and plan to make it this week.
Hi Vida, I think you will really love this lentil soup recipe. Let me know how it comes out!

Adding some panettone to the stir fry also makes it very Italian.
I love hearty soup in Winter.
Italian lentil soup, it should REALLY be tasty
It's so good and healthy too!
I love lentil soup!
I hope you get to make this recipe!
How many cups us in one bag? I thew the bag away& put lentils in a jar
There are 2 & 1/3 cups in one pound.
Hear that scraping sound of the metal spoon against the pan at aound 6:50? That's the sound of teflon being added to the soup.
The pan I used is hard anodized aluminum made by Circulon. It's non toxic and safe. I haven't owned Teflon pans for years now that there is a safe alternative.
HI, Can I add some dry parsley during the cooking if I don't have the fresh on hand?
Yes you can...it will still taste wonderful
That looks awesome, I can't wait to try it! I love lentil soup.

I think you will love the soup. The pan is hard anodized aluminum so a metal spoon doesn't harm it.
How long before nonstick pot is damaged using metal spoon or is your pot a special one if so will you say where you bought it!!!

Yes, any kind of pureed tomatoes are fine. You can sprinkle the soup with grated parmesan cheese before eating it. Hope you get to make it!
@@dianesworldkitchen I will make it very soon. I just need to get some tomatoes :)
Can you use orange lentils? I was given a big bag of them ,dont usually buy them
You probably could use them in the recipe...it might taste a little different but still delicious.
I always thought I needed to soak the beans overnight. Do I need to?
No you don't....they are legumes and not beans. Much easier! Just cook them right out of the bag in the soup.
Not lentils, BEANS YEAS
Is it gluten free ?

Better way to slice onions: leave the root end on, to hold the halves together while you slice and dice.
I keep the onion intact so it doesn't fall apart, by cutting only 3/4 the way through before dicing. Your technique is a good one too.

Sometimes older lentils will do that but I think you need to cook the soup longer. Add more liquid if needed. Also make sure they are brown lentils.

Please be specific about the quantity of lentils used in this recipe. A bag could mean 2 cups or 1 kg.
The measurment is one pound in the description box, which would be 16 ounces.
You don’t say how large the bag of lentils is?
Hi Juliet, The weight of the lentil bag should be 16 ounces, which is one pound. Thank you, and I hope you get to make this great recipe.
How many cups of lentils does this come out to?
No no for me. You didn't wash your lentils also a whole lot of Teflon.
@@genevekisson8639 it isn't necessary to wash the lentils. Also i don't own teflon. That pan is hard anodized aluminum. Thanks for your thoughts though.
Well ...this is Greek lentil soup.
Hi Eleni! I think we make it the same way. I live Greek food too!
