I would have given him the vote to win. That’s despite the category being solid as is. But it is a more “quiet” performance. And the Oscars have shown that they’re interested in rewarding “queer movies” sans big names and tragedy and a “coming out” arc.
He wasn't a snub. "a snub" is a situation when someone whose nomination was thought to be A CERTAINTY doesn't get a nomination. That and only that situation is a snub. Scott's nomination was never a certainty, not even close.
If you had to take a shot every time Brian says Emma Stone in Poor Things gave “the performance of the year” you’d be admitted to hospital with liver failure.
At this point I don’t know what worse, Dianne Warren thinking she should be winning for these terrible songs, or the academy nominating her just for the sake of nominating her
@earl.c They could have gone with Radiohead they too did a song for that Bond film. They decided to go with the Sam Smith for the theme for the movie.
I really thought giving Diane an Oscar for a lifetime achievement award back in (I think) 2018 or 2017 at the Governor's Award was already enough to shut her out for the next time she was nominated, but nope they kept doing it to her for some reason 😂
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem NEEDED that Oscar nomination over Elemental. The mario movie was fine, enjoyable but TMNT MM was majorly slept on.
I knew from the beginning the Academy wouldn’t have nominated TMNT because it’s an animated film based on an animated tv show. Not a single animated film based on an animated tv show gets nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Even The Simpsons Movie got snubbed 16 years ago.
Jimmy Neutron doesn’t count because the animated tv show is based on the Jimmy Neutron movie. I meant that animated movies based on animated tv shows that the tv shows exist before the movies never get nominated.
Past Lives got robbed somehow. How could the Academy not acknowledge Celine's Song delicate, but amazingly assured direction? And how could they not give a nomination to Teo Yoo for at least Best Supporting Actor, if not Actor In A Leading Role? He's truly heartbreaking in this film. For my money, the most moving acting performance of 2023. And Greta Lee could have gotten in in the Lead Actress category, instead of Annette Benning. That's a 'nostalgia' nomination for Benning. Anyway, Past Lives remains a wonderful film, and those who know, really know and love it to bits:)
I think Celine Song should have been nominated for Best Director over Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things. Poor Things is awful, and the most overrated film from last year. Greta Lee should have been nominated over Annette Bening.
@@laurajones1773 I have yet to see Poor Things. I have really enjoyed Lanthimos' films so far. Let's see how this one will sit with me. Thanks for your input, Laura:)
I thought that RDJ’s performance was safe. He plays the egotistical, narcissistic character in every movie. This performance was similar to his performance in SOAPDISH from 1991. I didn’t find his performance to be Oscar worthy.
Five Best: Paul Giamatti Ryan Gosling 95 Senses (animated short) Poor Things (cinematography) Guardians of The Galaxy Worst: Martin Scorsese (director) Replace: Greta Gerwig Maestro (Original screenplay) Replace: Dream Scenario The Zone of Interest (Adapt screenplay) Replace: Freud’s Last Session Elemental Replace: TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Robert Dinero Replace: Glen Howerton (Blackberry)
Sessa wasn't given enough credit for The Holdovers, IMO. Granted, Giamatti and Randolph were fantastic and they rightfully got a lot of attention, but he held his own alongside them. He made the gym scene the hysterical chaos that it was, and he was devastating at the assisted living facility. To bring that much depth to a character while never forgetting he's still a teenager isn't something a lot of young actors could pull off.
No way. They never nominate De Niro anymore and he was phenomenal in KOTFM. I do think that Dafoe should have gotten a nomination instead of Sterling K Brown though.
DeNiro was actually the best performance amongst the nominees… Outside the nominees, Melton deserved to win… Less said about RDJ’s hammy performance, the better…
They deserved it, but so did De Niro. I would take out Brown instead. And while Gosling was great in Barbie, Barbie fans were so insufferable with their whining over him getting nominated and Robbie not getting nominated (even though she did not deserve to be) that I'm starting to think they shouldn't have nominated anyone fror a role of Barbie, so there you are, Barbie fans, happy now?
I think Robert DeNiro deserves that Oscar nomination imo. I think it’s his best performance in recent years. I think he delivered the best performance in that movie, even more than Lily Gladstone. I would take out Sterling K. Brown and replace him with Sessa.
While i think that RDJ was the deserving winner of his category, i am also surprised he swept so easily, unlike Randolph who didn't have fierce competition (her co nominees are an already twice winning actress in a movie that didn't have passion, 2 coattails from BP nominees and a sole nominee for her movie that flopped). I would have thought either Ryan Gosling or De Niro would have given him a fight by winning one of the precursors like GG or CC at least.
@@jeffbuckland1833I didnt get to fully see Oppenheimer, but from what I saw RDJ was fantastic(and played an actual character). That being said, I wouldn't have been mad with Mark Ruffalo winning, he was great.
@@stephengrigg5988 Check with your theater. Mine had a re release TH-Wed. I have a ticket for Wednesday but it isn’t for imax. That will dilute the strength of the film. This will be my 5th big screen watch, I watched 4 more times in imax during its 9 weeks run. We have the bluray 2-disc dvd, and bought it on VOD and streaming. We have the soundtrack. It’s an unusual thing for me, watching even a good film more than once during a year. So we were gobsmacked to find we wanted to see it over and over again July through February. As a matter of fact we watched it again the day after Oscars and that’s when we found out they were indeed going to re release it 🎉. Every time I watch it I find something more to appreciate. The mammoth book had too small print for me, so I read the 150 pages of End Notes which were really really interesting. Then I got the audiobook. Wow. The details! The people! The mystery, the suspense. You discover so much more about the man, his relationships and the Manhattan Project in the book. I am thrilled to see it again!😊
Honestly - I said this before, Diane Warren deserved to win the Oscar for her song "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from the movie "Burlesque." She won the Golden Globe with this song, was nominated for a Grammy, but oddly enough, this year she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. I hope that Diane Warren works on a good film this year and that she can finally win the Oscar for Best Song - cause all these past nominations are already off limits.
@@laurajones1773i think the same, Till it Happends to You should have been her win, but Sam Smith was in peak breakthrough of their career... It was more a popular vote for them and Gaga wasnt as hight at the moment to carry the votes, like it did gor Shallow
I 100% agree that Mark Ruffalo should have been honored for Poor Things. I’ll go out an a limb and say he should have won the Oscar. He was so wonderful in that role and he was playing against type.
Totally agree with you about Paul GIamatti. I am happy for Cillian Murphy, but I didn't come away from Oppenheimer thinking he should win an Oscar. I did with Giamatti in the Holdovers, especially considering he should have won years ago for Sideways.
Im so sad for dianne warren, i know her recent songs are terrible. But she is a legend, she is an amazing songwriter. I think she was close of winning with "till it happens to you". Such a meaningful son. Cowritten by lady gaga. Also the performance with abuse survivers was an all timer in the oscars. I think that song was worthy of winning
Beautiful film. Loved it. Friendships from our childhood always stick with you, even if you never see them again. The past is never the past. This heartfelt script moved me.
@flutteringwaves5559 i saw Poor Things in the theatre, loved it. Loved Emmas performance. Brian whose page I love has been in Emma Stone overdrive since she won. Im honest fatigued with Oscar videos.
I could not agree more with you on your number one, past lives, the clear number one movie of the year. I would give at least 7 nominations, best movie, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, director, screenplay and cinematography. A great movie!
i agree with you for the Best Picture Nomination for "Past Lives" and like you, i was so deeply moved by the last scene from the movie, when Nora comes back to her flat and was so emotional in her's husband arms, with the amazing score in between... and i predicted Sandra Huller's win, but anyway, she did win the European Award for Best Actress, and the César Award also, so congratulation for her 1st Academy Award Nomination. BYE🥰😍🤩😃😀
I loved that her husband was so supportive and comforting in that last scene although he was initial nervous about her reunion with a culturally significant childhood friend. Great film.
A song that should have been nominated: Can't Catch Me Now by Olivia Rodrigo from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Not only a really good song but one that really captures the storyline and themes of the movie it was in.
I’m gonna be negative and only do my top 5 worst: 5. *Annette Benning - actress* (She gave a great performance but such a boring nomination, should’ve been Greta Lee, Margot or Portman) 4. *Maestro- picture* (So many better options, especially Spiderverse and May December) 3. *America Ferrera- supporting actress* (She was fine, but Julianne Moore was incredible in May December and many others were also more deserving than Ferrera) 2. *Flamin Hot- Song* (The academy is making me hate Diane Warren even tho I know nothing about her separated from the Oscars. Am I Dreaming, one of the Flora and Son songs or the Olivia Rodrigo Hunger Games song should’ve been nominated) 1. *Dial of Destiny- Score* (This was way worse than American Fiction also getting in, but both should’ve been replaced with Spiderverse and The Boy and the Heron)
I agree. Dial of Destiny is not one of John Williams’ best scores. Across the Spiderverse is my favorite score from last year and deserves at least a nomination. The score is the heart and soul of that movie. I think it didn’t get nominated because the Academy hates that movie for some reason. They hate it so much that not only was the movie only nominated in the Best Animated Feature category, it didn’t even win the Best Animated Feature category despite it winning at Critics Choice, Annie, PGA and ACE Eddie Award. I guess Spiderverse didn’t win the Oscar just because it’s a sequel. The Academy hates awarding sequels in that category unless it’s Toy Story.
Eh, it counts as adapted because it’s based on characters from other material. The same way something like Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery was nominated for Best Adapted despite having an original story.
At the very beginning of the movie it says 'based on the characters by Mattel'. The campaigns team were sneaking trying to get it into original screenplay because the movie itself says its adapted.
Here’s my list, I made this before watching so I’m interested to see how much overlap me and Brian have. I technically didn’t follow the same rules, since I allowed a movie and category to appear once on both lists, hence the score, actress, and original screenplay picks. Worst- 5: Best Documentary Short Film-Island in Between 4: Best Original Song-“The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot 3: Best Actress-Annette Bening (Nyad) 2: Best Original Score-Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 1: Best Original Screenplay-Maestro Now, the best nominations- 5: Best Actress-Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) 4: Best Animated Feature-Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 3: Best Original Screenplay-The Holdovers 2: Best Supporting Actor-Ryan Gosling (Barbie) 1-Best Original Score-Poor Things
I watched “Past Lives” totally based upon your recommendation. Thank you for the heads up on that. What a great exploration into long term psychology of individuals.
Sandra Huller from Anatomy of a Fall is the best performance from last year. She’s my personal Best Actress winner. It sucks she didn’t at least win at BAFTA.
Williams should’ve received Oscars for Catch Me If You Can (2002) and for HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). He was nominated… BTW, 2002 went to Frida and 2004 to Finding Neverland. They were good, but Williams’s scores were better (IMO).
I don’t even remember the scores to Frida and Finding Neverland. Catch Me if You Can and especially Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are much better scores and scores I can remember. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the best score in the Harry Potter franchise. Also, I thought The Incredibles score was also better and more memorable than Finding Neverland’s score. However, it wasn’t even nominated.
If Greta Lee and Charles Melton did get the nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, that would probably be easily in Top 2 My Favorite Nominations of the year with Lee at #1 and Melton at #2. PS. While Ruffalo gave a totally wild performance in Poor Things, I just don’t like his character like a lot. 😁
I'm with you on Lightyear and Elemental, but not with The Super Mario Bros. Movie. But, it's so difficult for me to find an animated film for me in recent years.
So good to see someone singing the praises of Meet in the Middle from Flora and Son. When the shortlist came out I listened to the song and loved and really wished it had been nominated.
Your Chanel is the best thing when it comes to movies, I always loved films but you made me adore films even more you interoducd me to. Many things, thank you ❤💗
Greta Lee not being nominated was the biggest snub of all! Past Lives was the BEST picture last year and Greta Lee is the reason why. The more bilingual representation the better!
I loved the nomination for the late Robbie Robertson for Best Original Score, as well as that film’s nomination for Best Original Song. Speaking of, I’m okay with Williams’ nomination for Best Score. They were probably voting with the mind that Williams was retiring (though now we know he apparently has no plans for that) so they weren’t gonna let him go without a nomination and plus, it’s John Williams. If it were any other composer I would be like, ‘really?’ But since it’s John Williams I’m okay.
For some sooo, stupid reason PL does not premire here until thursday this week. But your raving review and continued praise about the film, has made me not watch it until I could. Also: What about Glazer for director? One of my personal picks this year
Not nominating TMNT Mutant Mayhem for Best Animated Feature was a disgrace. Elemental would've been an easy swap for that. I couldn't disagree more on the Mario Movie, that awful movie in no way deserved an Oscar nomination, so thank goodness it didn't get one. TMNT Mutant Mayhem meanwhile is visually stunning and a great fresh take on a classic franchise.
i don’t see enough people talking about how Olivia Rodrigo deserved a nomination for Original Song, “Can’t Catch me Now” from the new hunger games film. i mean that song is so good
Love these videos! Although I would probably like them more without the rules you give yourself at the beginning. I wanna see your TRUE top best and worst. Even if they won Oscars or there’s multiple things from the same film. But maybe that’s just me. Love the videos regardless!
I thought RDJ was a fitting win, until I watched Poor Things and realized how much Mark Ruffalo should have one that. He is phenomenal in that movie. Everyone is. But he and Emma Stone were so fucking good.
I think a best director nom should’ve gone to Celine Song. Sorry, but I think Poor Things was a poor movie. It had good technicals and good acting, but I feel like the absurdism and surrealism was almost done in a cliche way. I truly don’t think the cinematography was that good. Like pinhole shots and blurry filters and bad cgi backdrops and skies really don’t make it worthy imo. The acting was technically very good for all actors, but I think pretty much everything about the film is overrated. Not to mention the disgusting morality of the film (constant depictions of pedophilic people having sex with a baby/girl-minded person, and the idea that women should basically whore themselves in order to break out from being controlled by men). Lilly Gladstone and Sandra Hüller both deserved the Oscar over Emma Stone I believe. I think that the gravitas that both of those actresses were able to give to their films with FAR more subtle and skilled (imo) acting than Emma Stone both deserved the Oscar more. Stone gave a good performance, no doubt, but it never screamed “better than Gladstone or Hüller” to me. I think her performance was very over the top and physical, but I think there are other actresses who could do that. I don’t think the same for the other two actresses. Back to directing, I don’t think Jorgos deserved the nomination (I know, crucify me), and I think Song could easily have replaced him. And honestly, I thought that Zone of interest overstayed its welcome and kind of failed as a film in its failure to ever diversify what’s going on in the movie. It was a great premise and I was absolutely shocked for the first 30 minutes. Once that wore off, i was kind of waiting for something to actually happen. Some kind of plot to appear, anything. I think the style of the film would work far better for a 30 minute short film, not a 1hr 45min feature length film. Even though his directorial vision is impressive, it starts to seem a bit empty the longer the movie goes on. Like, we get it, Jews are being massacred in the background and the characters are totally apathetic. It’s horrible…but does it need nearly two hours straight to show that? So I think Glazer could’ve been bumped out for Song. Truly, Past Lives is one of the most beautiful and impressive films I’ve ever seen. Also, very glad Gerwig wasn’t nominated…she has great films that absolutely deserve nominations, Barbie isn’t one of them. Give me Celine Song and Justine Triet over her any day for this year’s films.
Even if Williams's recent music doesn't reach the heights of his career, it's still miles ahead of anything else any other composers put out today. No one has the ability to write the nuanced and dense/neo-romantic music he does. Also all things considered DoD is his last film score so after 55 or so noms it'd seem kinda weird to not nominate his last.
i was hoping one of your picks for worst nomination would be in the best actress category for greta lee (annette benning, really?) but i was so glad to hear you mention it at the end! and you’re right, the score really is incredible. i think i know what movie i’m watching tonight!
I agree. I was surprised that Annette Bening got a nomination that should have gone to Great Lee or Margo Robbie. I thought either of these two performances were more worthy.
What do you think about awards going the way of Globes? How do we choose between apples and oranges? Stone for comedy, Hüller for drama. (I’m one of those people who thinks Gladstone’s supporting role may have been the beating heart of the film, but not because of her performance. The honor goes to the Osage Nation.)
Thank you for mentioning Diane Warren! I listened to "The Fire Inside" and it was very unremarkable. She has written some great songs for film (and television) over the decades, but her name is what gets her nominated now.
I also think that Sandra Hüller was second behind Emma Stone. At the end of the day, Killers of the Flower Moon won nothing and Anatomy of a Fall won Best Original Screenplay. So they clearly liked one film more than the other. If Sandra had won, she would've been one of the Best Actress winners ever, imo.
The worst nomination for best film was Maestro, because it was about Bernstein. He took a wrecking ball to classical music. I posted a video on my TH-cam channel titled THE BERNSTEIN EFFECT that explains how Bernstein's teachings were deigned to make pianists, composers and conductors stupid. He used the Young Peoples Concerts to dumb down the arts, ruining the way symphonies and concertos are performed. The press made him their sacred cow and slanted the coverage. I made another video about how he vandalized Beethoven's symphonies. Film makers need to do the proper research when making a movie about any of the classical sacred cows.
Love or hate her, Olivia Rodrigo's Can't Catch Me Now for the Hunger Games was such an amazing song and even made the shortlist. Should've been nominated over that awful Cheetos song.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I was devastated when Daniel Pemberton was not nominated for score for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but oh, you are so right that Past Lives would have been a great nomination for score! Like you, my second viewing of the movie hit harder, and it was largely thanks to the score! For makeup, I was devasted that Barbie didn't even make the short list. "Dance the Night" should have been nominated in place of "What Was I Made for" (unpopular opinion, but the Oscars' orchestra played "Dance the Night" to open and close the show!) Another good nominee would have been "Keep It Movin'" from The Color Purple. "The Fire Inside" is a catchy song, so it's not the worst nomination, but I agree that we need a break from Diane until she writes a song for a stronger Oscar contender.
Past Lives was a work of art. If it was up to me, I would have nominated it for: Best Picture (a nomination that it earned) Best Director - Celine Song Best Original Screenplay - Celine Song (a nomination that it earned) Best Actor - Teo Yoo Best Actress - Greta Lee Best Original Score - Bear and Rossenf Best Film Editing - Keith Fraase Best Sound (I was very impressed by this aspect in particular. The backgrounds felt very alive, but not to the point of feeling distracting.)
My 5 best: 1. Best Actress: Lily Gladstone- Killers of the Flower Moon 2. Best Director: Jonathan Glazer- The Zone of Interest 3. Best Supporting Actor: Ryan Gosling- Barbie 4. Best Makeup and Hair: Society of the Snow 5. Best Original Score: Killers of the Flower Moon- Robbie Robertson My 5 worst: 1. Best Original Screenplay: Maestro- Bradley Cooper, Josh Singer (Replacement: Saltburn- Emerald Fennell) 2. Best Makeup and Hair: Golda (Replacement: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3) 3. Best Original Score: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny- John Williams (Replacement: Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse) 4. Best Original Song: The Fire Inside- Flamin Hot (Replacement: Am I Dreamin- Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse) 5. Best Supporting Actress: Jodie Foster- Nyad (Replacement: Rosamund Pike- Saltburn)
I had to change some nominations I would get rid of both Domingo and Cooper in actor for Di Caprio and Teo Yoo. I would have nominated Doming in supporting for The Color Purple (amazing performance!) instead of Sterling K. Brown and also, imho, Charles Melton instead of Downey Jr. Penelope Cruz for Ferrari and Julianne Moore for May December in Supporting Actress, instead of Blunt and Ferrera. Also, in the same category, I would have definitely loved to have Sandra Huller for Zone of interest replacing Foster. Natalie Portman in actress to replace Bening. Obviously, I would have got rid and Indiana Jones in score for The Boy and The Heron and Society of the snow in sound, instead of the Creator. For the scripts, I would have preferred Killers of the flower moon in Adapted, instead of Barbie, and Monster in Original Screenplay instead of Maestro. And to end big, May December for Picture, getting rid of Maestro.
I agree that Elemental should be replaced but the movie that should take its place is Suzume. Perfect Days was a good choice . This movie grew on me and the music is so nostalgic. Maestro’s screenplay should be replaced by Perfect Days. The story wasn’t much but it executes well. Willem Defoe should be nominated than Mark Ruffalo. Indiana Jones 5 being nominated is so stupid. Against Into The Spider-Verse and The Boy And The Heron? Really? The Holdovers is a good movie. Diana Warren should be BANNED for being nominated for an Oscar. After all, she got an Honorary Oscar. Anatomy Of A Fall is also a good film. Golda wasn’t the worst movie in my opinion. It was ok. Past Lives is an ok film. Just that the ending was weak and boring
I think Past Lives’ ending was strong, actually! Perhaps I was more attuned to its intended trajectory. I was holding all of these emotions and when I reached the ending absolutely just bursted and was crying along with the character. I think its intended impact was more of a silent killer kind of thing--a sudden snap and all the emotions come out pouring.
100% agree with you about RDJ and Ruffalo. Ruffalo killed it and deserved the Oscar. And whoa. It was nice to see someone who loves Past Lives as much as I did.
Last Voyage of the Demeter was my pick for Best Makeup as soon as I walked out of the theater. I remembered Wolfman from 2010 winning Best Makeup and figured Demeter really had a chance.
If the Academy isnt going to watch enough international animated feature films like Suzume then just make it 3 films, as its so embarrassing to see utter dreck in there with the excuse of "it's for kids"
Suzume should have taken Elemental's place for Best Animated Feature. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem would also have been a decent choice. But I liked Elemental better than a lot of people did, so it doesn't count as one of my five worst nominations. My own four worst: 1) Diane Warren for Best Original Song, a nomination for a movie with a ridiculous premise. (Why would anyone want to make a time investment in the story of the creation of a Cheetos brand??) My choice: "She Be Mine" from The Color Purple. 2) John Williams for Best Original Score. My choice: Joe Hisaichi, The Boy and the Heron. 3) Carey Mulligan for Best Actress. My choice: Greta Lee, Past Lives. 4) Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for Best Adapted Screenplay, because darn it, that is an original story, not an adaptation of anything. My choice: Kelly Freemon Craig, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.
Ok Brian, love you lots, but I have to disagree with you about “Golda”, specifically your sweeping condemnation of the whole movie. Maybe it’s because I remember her and that time from my youth, or maybe because I watched it on a plane and was a captive audience, but I liked it and thought it was worth my time. And by the way, Cate Blanchett was robbed last year…as was Glenn Close a few years back…
As requested, here are my favorite Oscar-nominated films (1 is best): 1. Perfect Days 2. Robot Dreams 3. Past Lives 4. Anatomy of a Fall 5. The Boy and the Heron And my worst (1 is worst): 1. Poor Things (I did not care for it, I’m sorry) 2. El Conde 3. The Color Purple 4. Golda 5. The After
I'm with Brian 100% on Maestro NOT needing a Best Screenplay nomination. The story did not feel very cohesive to me. It just felt like random moments from their lives together. It's not a good story with an engaging narrative arc. (Of course, I also felt this way about Oppenheimer, too, so maybe my judgment is just off this year although I was SO happy that American Fiction beat it out in that category.)
Oppenheimer has a better screenplay than Maestro. Although I do have some issues with the screenplay with Oppenheimer including the poorly written female characters and the trial scene lasting way too long.
Thank you for the video essay, Brian. I couldn't disagree more about the Saltburn hypothetical Best Original Screenplay: - the story makes no sense, the motivations make no sense, - the best characters (Rosemund Pike's and Carey Mulligan's ), as cited by fans and critics, apparently improvised their dialogue on set à la Mike Leigh, - and the fact that video essay after video essay on this platform rightly point out the many narrative and dialogue parallels between "Saltburn" and Anthony Minghella's infinitely (even esthetically) superior "The Talented Mrs. Ripley" And to top it all off, Emerald Fennel pretending she has never seen or taken inspiration from that film, is just inexplicable. I'm curious how you'll feel about Saltburn in 3-5 years. Will you remember it?
Just so you know - I was watching this TH-cam video on my TV and I immediately opened my computer to see if someone made a comment like this 😆 If Barbie was considered an adapted screenplay, Saltburn most certainly would deserve to be considered for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as it felt like a rip-off of The Talented Mr. Ripley. I read nothing about Saltburn in advance so knew nothing about the movie and genuinely thought of the 1999 film while watching Saltburn and apparently others agree! I also agree that plot-wise, the ending made no sense either. I'm more than happy to let others say they enjoyed the film, but I too have to disagree about the screenplay being considered outstanding in being original.
1) Best Leading Actor ===> TIE between Paul Giamatti and Cillian Murphy, the best nominations for this category 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I'm sorry, but the nomination of Colman Domingo was a mistake 😞 I admire him like human being, but others actors were best. 2) Best Leading Actress ===> Sandra Hüller was the best nomination this 2024. Actors and actresses from the European Awards, Berlin and Cannes are the best source for the Oscars 👍🏻 I'm sorry too, but Anette Benning this year... Mmm 😒 3) "Anatomy of a Fall" 🇨🇵 and "Oppenheimer" 🇺🇲 becomes this year 2024 in one of the very best for the most important category: Best Picture 🥇I know what many fans will hate me, but "Barbie" was a shame in that list of 10 titles 😖🤦🏻♂️👎🏻 Many other films deserved very much than the Ryan Gosling film, one of the most pop corn 🍿 films in history. For example, the spanish "The Society of the Snow" 🇪🇸, because many youtubers and their followers are fascinante talking about this incredible movie 😮
I thought the holdovers was like all these new songs that sample old hits instead of coming up with something new. They’re fine to listen to since they have the foundation of something’s that’s already established as good, but you can’t really connect to the song because it just feels lazy. It has 1000% more heart than any of those songs, but to me has just as little originality. I definitely get how it might scratch an itch for a lot of people, but personally I wished it brought something new to the table rather than feeling like a giant homage to movies that are frankly far superior.
I still think Andrew Scott not being nominated at Oscars is a massive snub.

Aren't all her songs terrible, even the ones that were actual hits.
The only one of her nominations I liked was the Armageddon song, and most of that is due to Aerosmith
Didn't she co-write a song with Lady Gaga (which lost to the terrible Sam Smith song)? She could've gotten a pity win then
@earl.c They could have gone with Radiohead they too did a song for that Bond film. They decided to go with the Sam Smith for the theme for the movie.

The score for The Boy and the Heron by longtime Miyazaki collaborator Joe Hisaishi was fascinating.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem NEEDED that Oscar nomination over Elemental. The mario movie was fine, enjoyable but TMNT MM was majorly slept on.
That's what I thought
I knew from the beginning the Academy wouldn’t have nominated TMNT because it’s an animated film based on an animated tv show. Not a single animated film based on an animated tv show gets nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Even The Simpsons Movie got snubbed 16 years ago.
But Jimmy Neutron’s movie got a nomination
@@laurajones1773 you're thinking of rise of the tmnt
Jimmy Neutron doesn’t count because the animated tv show is based on the Jimmy Neutron movie. I meant that animated movies based on animated tv shows that the tv shows exist before the movies never get nominated.

True
It wasn't that good,it left out important stuff of the von brothers and it was Oscar bait
Agreed!
Yep
I think Celine Song should have been nominated for Best Director over Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things. Poor Things is awful, and the most overrated film from last year. Greta Lee should have been nominated over Annette Bening.
@@laurajones1773 I have yet to see Poor Things. I have really enjoyed Lanthimos' films so far. Let's see how this one will sit with me. Thanks for your input, Laura:)
It was pretty ordinary. Nothing much happens in the movie. It was fine.
To me, Sandra Huller was the true Best Actress winner.
Agreed.
I love RDJ but he was over rewarded this season.
I thought that RDJ’s performance was safe. He plays the egotistical, narcissistic character in every movie. This performance was similar to his performance in SOAPDISH from 1991. I didn’t find his performance to be Oscar worthy.
Five Best:
Paul Giamatti
Ryan Gosling
95 Senses (animated short)
Poor Things (cinematography)
Guardians of The Galaxy
Worst:
Martin Scorsese (director)
Replace: Greta Gerwig
Maestro (Original screenplay)
Replace: Dream Scenario
The Zone of Interest (Adapt screenplay)
Replace: Freud’s Last Session
Elemental
Replace: TMNT: Mutant Mayhem
Robert Dinero
Replace: Glen Howerton (Blackberry)
Diane Warren could write a song about eating a pizza with drinking a milkshake and can still be Oscar nominated for some reason 😂
A Flamin Turd
Not far off from hot cheetos
Death, taxes and Diane Warren nominations
The song is absolutely awful pick
I kinda think it's a sick joke by the music branch at this point. "Pfft hey guys, let's nominate her song from the Cheetos movies, BWAHAHA!"
Did robert deniro need another oscar nomination? That nomination should have gone to melton or sessa
I wish Gosling or Ruffalo won somewhere to make the category interesting. That being said I’m fine with Downey winning
For me, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now easily should have won, and that was her first nomination too.
How do I live from con air
She should’ve won for Till it Happens to You. Powerful song. It lost to a crappy James Bond song Writings on a Wall.
@@marsspacex6065 good song, but up against My Heart Will Go On it had no chance in hell of winning
Past Lives easily had my vote for best picture
I've so enjoyed following the Oscar year with you.
Totally agree with you about Paul GIamatti. I am happy for Cillian Murphy, but I didn't come away from Oppenheimer thinking he should win an Oscar. I did with Giamatti in the Holdovers, especially considering he should have won years ago for Sideways.
He’s my personal pick to win.
Past Lives is the Casablanca of our times
I like this comment!
🤔
It does give me Casablanca vibes along with Brokeback Mountain.
Beautiful film. Loved it. Friendships from our childhood always stick with you, even if you never see them again. The past is never the past. This heartfelt script moved me.
Haven't seen it, but looks like In the Mood for Love
Thank you for not talking about Emma Stone. Its appreciated.
Agreed!
Here only included not winning nomination.
So sassy
But why???
@flutteringwaves5559 i saw Poor Things in the theatre, loved it. Loved Emmas performance. Brian whose page I love has been in Emma Stone overdrive since she won. Im honest fatigued with Oscar videos.
Luca is shockingly underrated
The movie?
Loved it
I thought the movie was okay. The last time there was a great Pixar film was Soul.
BYE🥰😍🤩😃😀
I loved that her husband was so supportive and comforting in that last scene although he was initial nervous
about her reunion with a culturally significant childhood friend. Great film.
A song that should have been nominated: Can't Catch Me Now by Olivia Rodrigo from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Not only a really good song but one that really captures the storyline and themes of the movie it was in.
Brian put Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on his Top 10 Worst films of 2023.
@@eamonndeane587 I know. He is usually right but no one is perfect.
Replacing elemental with mario is absolutely foul. Atleast elemental tried to say something, mario is just "look at thing from game"
I’m gonna be negative and only do my top 5 worst:
5. *Annette Benning - actress* (She gave a great performance but such a boring nomination, should’ve been Greta Lee, Margot or Portman)
4. *Maestro- picture* (So many better options, especially Spiderverse and May December)
3. *America Ferrera- supporting actress* (She was fine, but Julianne Moore was incredible in May December and many others were also more deserving than Ferrera)
2. *Flamin Hot- Song* (The academy is making me hate Diane Warren even tho I know nothing about her separated from the Oscars. Am I Dreaming, one of the Flora and Son songs or the Olivia Rodrigo Hunger Games song should’ve been nominated)
1. *Dial of Destiny- Score* (This was way worse than American Fiction also getting in, but both should’ve been replaced with Spiderverse and The Boy and the Heron)
Dial of Destiny getting an Score nomination over Across the Spider-Verse is a damn travesty
Sandra Huller also deserved an Oscar nomination for her truly fearless and outstanding performance in “Toni Erdmann.”
Brian, will we see a video about the Dune: part two? And thank you for your works!
I would have replaced Maestro with Barbie. Barbie should have been in ORIGINAL screenplay not adapted
I don't think Barbie's script was that good either way. The movie is extremely thematically incoherent.
I would have given the score to Joe Hisaishi for the boy and the heron
Perfect days is amazing, Suzume is the alternative for best animated film
Here’s my list, I made this before watching so I’m interested to see how much overlap me and Brian have. I technically didn’t follow the same rules, since I allowed a movie and category to appear once on both lists, hence the score, actress, and original screenplay picks.
Worst-
5: Best Documentary Short Film-Island in Between
4: Best Original Song-“The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot
3: Best Actress-Annette Bening (Nyad)
2: Best Original Score-Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
1: Best Original Screenplay-Maestro
Now, the best nominations-
5: Best Actress-Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall)
4: Best Animated Feature-Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
3: Best Original Screenplay-The Holdovers
2: Best Supporting Actor-Ryan Gosling (Barbie)
1-Best Original Score-Poor Things
I watched “Past Lives” totally based upon your recommendation. Thank you for the heads up on that. What a great exploration into long term psychology of individuals.
Sandra Huller from Anatomy of a Fall is the best performance from last year. She’s my personal Best Actress winner. It sucks she didn’t at least win at BAFTA.
BAFTA Is the short brother of Oscars, that's the reason 🤦🏻♂️
Annette Bening is such a throw away nomination and that’s what makes me so angry
I agree. Very mediocre performance. Greta Lee and Margot Robbie are more deserving of being nominated than her.
I'll just assumed Diane Warren is pictured here because the Cheetos song is fire!
You have to watch Sandra Huller in a movie called Toni Erdmann, she is fantastic!!!
The screenplay is the worst part of Saltburn.
Facts
💯 it "borrows" so heavily from The Talented Mr. Ripley, Brideshead Revisited and Maurice.
So good to see someone singing the praises of Meet in the Middle from Flora and Son. When the shortlist came out I listened to the song and loved and really wished it had been nominated.
I also commented somewhere about the Maestro’s screenplay. It’s like a WIP and needs final revision before filming.
Your Chanel is the best thing when it comes to movies, I always loved films but you made me adore films even more you interoducd me to. Many things, thank you ❤💗
Past Lives was by far my favorite film as well. One of my top movies of all time.
One of my personal picks this year
He’s my personal pick to win Best Director.
This was a quiet film😅
that broke my heart. Beautiful. Well acted. A stunner. You almost have to say they just don’t make movies like this anymore.
Thanks Brian! Should I take Golda off my “to watch” list? 😂 I liked your lists. Past Lives was gut wrenchingly beautiful.
I thought RDJ was a fitting win, until I watched Poor Things and realized how much Mark Ruffalo should have one that. He is phenomenal in that movie. Everyone is. But he and Emma Stone were so fucking good.
I agree with Elemental, but I would have replace it with Suzume instead of the mario movie
Please do a video of the elusive Oscar Diane Warren. 😂
i was hoping one of your picks for worst nomination would be in the best actress category for greta lee (annette benning, really?) but i was so glad to hear you mention it at the end! and you’re right, the score really is incredible. i think i know what movie i’m watching tonight!
OMG thank you. I though the same thing. Super Mario Bros. Over Elemental. SMB was my animated movie of the year
Willem Dafoe should’ve been nominated instead of Mark Ruffalo. With Dafoe’s character he begins and ends the film along with Emma Stone
In the words of Bella: "God lovely!"
Saltburn original?? We already saw it in Talented Mr. Ripley in 1999
This was awesome. I was laughing so hard when you were talking about Diane Warren. However, I think your analysis was spot on. Thank you!!
Just letting you know I also loved SALTBURN. You're not the only one.
I agree! It was very out there and entertaining.
Love or hate her, Olivia Rodrigo's Can't Catch Me Now for the Hunger Games was such an amazing song and even made the shortlist. Should've been nominated over that awful Cheetos song.
Thanks for upvoting Dream scenario, I'm curious now
I agree with Elemental not being worthy, but I wouldn't give the nom for Mario. I would have given it to Suzume instead.
Yes on Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things! He was the best performance in that category imo.
He’s good but not as good as everyone says he is. For me personally, I don’t think he should have been nominated.
Past Lives was a work of art. If it was up to me, I would have nominated it for:
Best Picture (a nomination that it earned)
Best Director - Celine Song
Best Original Screenplay - Celine Song (a nomination that it earned)
Best Actor - Teo Yoo
Best Actress - Greta Lee
Best Original Score - Bear and Rossenf
Best Film Editing - Keith Fraase
Best Sound (I was very impressed by this aspect in particular. The backgrounds felt very alive, but not to the point of feeling distracting.)
Past Lives was my favorite movie of 2023 as well.
My 5 best:
1. Best Actress: Lily Gladstone- Killers of the Flower Moon
2. Best Director: Jonathan Glazer- The Zone of Interest
3. Best Supporting Actor: Ryan Gosling- Barbie
4. Best Makeup and Hair: Society of the Snow
5. Best Original Score: Killers of the Flower Moon- Robbie Robertson
My 5 worst:
1. Best Original Screenplay: Maestro- Bradley Cooper, Josh Singer (Replacement: Saltburn- Emerald Fennell)
2. Best Makeup and Hair: Golda (Replacement: Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3)
3. Best Original Score: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny- John Williams (Replacement: Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse)
4. Best Original Song: The Fire Inside- Flamin Hot (Replacement: Am I Dreamin- Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse)
Suzume! 💯
Mark ruffola was so good in poor things. So funny,so dramatic. He deserved it
I think Past Lives’ ending was strong, actually! Perhaps I was more attuned to its intended trajectory. I was holding all of these emotions and when I reached the ending absolutely just bursted and was crying along with the character. I think its intended impact was more of a silent killer kind of thing--a sudden snap and all the emotions come out pouring.
The Do, Re, Mis of Song Banning.
100% agree with you about RDJ and Ruffalo. Ruffalo killed it and deserved the Oscar.
And whoa. It was nice to see someone who loves Past Lives as much as I did.
You need to dedicate an entire video about Diane Warren and call it "Diane Warren and the Guaranteed Oscar nomination".
Last Voyage of the Demeter was my pick for Best Makeup as soon as I walked out of the theater. I remembered Wolfman from 2010 winning Best Makeup and figured Demeter really had a chance.
You did a great job on awards sesson
America Ferrera deserves a spot in your worst 5 lol its almost as bad a nomination as Jamie Lee Curtis last year
Thoughts on Andrew Scott not getting nominated for All of Us Strangers? That’s my top male performance of the year.
Teenage mutant ninja turtles or Suzume should have been nominated over Elemental
My own four worst:
1) Diane Warren for Best Original Song, a nomination for a movie with a ridiculous premise.
And by the way, Cate Blanchett was robbed last year…as was Glenn Close a few years back…
Robert Downy Jr didn’t win the Oscar.
Iron Man won the Oscar.
As requested, here are my favorite Oscar-nominated films (1 is best):
1. Perfect Days
2. Robot Dreams
3. Past Lives
4. Anatomy of a Fall
5. The Boy and the Heron
And my worst (1 is worst):
1. Poor Things (I did not care for it, I’m sorry)
2. El Conde
3. The Color Purple
4. Golda
5. The After
Don’t like Poor Things either.
I can't wait until someone teams Sandra Huller with Cate Blanchett in a project. Please!!
I couldn't disagree more about the Saltburn hypothetical Best Original Screenplay:
- the story makes no sense, the motivations make no sense,
- the best characters (Rosemund Pike's and Carey Mulligan's ), as cited by fans and critics, apparently improvised their dialogue on set à la Mike Leigh,
- and the fact that video essay after video essay on this platform rightly point out the many narrative and dialogue parallels between "Saltburn" and Anthony Minghella's infinitely (even esthetically) superior "The Talented Mrs. Ripley"
And to top it all off, Emerald Fennel pretending she has never seen or taken inspiration from that film, is just inexplicable.
Thank you for your message and thoughts. 😀🙏
Mmm 😒
3) "Anatomy of a Fall" 🇨🇵 and "Oppenheimer" 🇺🇲 becomes this year 2024 in one of the very best for the most important category: Best Picture 🥇I know what many fans will hate me, but "Barbie" was a shame in that list of 10 titles 😖🤦🏻♂️👎🏻 Many other films deserved very much than the Ryan Gosling film, one of the most pop corn 🍿 films in history. For example, the spanish "The Society of the Snow" 🇪🇸, because many youtubers and their followers are fascinante talking about this incredible movie 😮
I definitely would not have given Past Lives a shot if not for the Best Picture Nom. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for the nominations review 👍
I still say Giamatti should have won.
