Here for Marianne Jean-Baptiste's searingly indelible performance for 'Hard Truths'. Thanks for championing her. Has anyone noticed that Nicole Kidman keeps playing variations on the same character in every movie? In every film she is a rich, powerful, somewhat chilly woman with what is on the surface, an enviable life - except for a cheating husband who may also be a rapist or a murderer or generally a horrible person in some other way. See Stepford Wives, Big Little Lies, The Undoing, The Perfect Couple. Babygirl. Yet she's given credit for being brave and daring because she has at least one explicit sex scene in all those films. What's brave about that formula?
Probably. But if you put her in a movie where she is poor, low income or even middle income it does not seem to work because of her striking face ( It worked if she is a suffering mother- Rabbit Hole/ Lion). Try watching the Human Stain with Anthony Hopkins. Her acting was exquisite but a lot of critics complain about the believability of her role even if in the book her character Faunia was privileged that became destitute. Unless she completely transforms like in The Hours it is hard not to have her beautiful face in your brain. I don’t mind her in what you describe as rich powerful woman, I always appreciate her nuanced not flashy acting . Watch Birth it is one of the most haunting 2-2.5 minute of silent acting- just her eyes showing all the fleeting emotion running through her.
I agree with a lot of what you said, and enjoyed the whole breakdown. I am less sure on Jolie and Gascon than you, but I also need to see Erivo to get a sense of where she and her movie land. Jean-Baptiste is currently my #1 but I also need to see Kidman, who I am dying to see in Babygirl. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wicked or Babygirl manage to oust Hard Truths as my current #1 movie of the year (with Anora just behind).
If the Academy weren’t biased against genre films , actresses like Demi Moore ( From the Substance) and Naomi Scott ( From smile 2 ) would be the front runners this upcoming award season
Ok... But I think that Fernanda Torres' interpretation (from the film "I'm Still Here") is very powerful. I understand that you are analyzing according to the method of choosing nominations, but it is also possible to think about a more globalized Academy. Oh, it's never too late to say that I follow and enjoy your work.
I think Saoirse is long overdue for an Oscar. Some of her less deserving peers have received that honour before her, but a few of her nominations have suffered from bad timing. That being said, this time around I’m all for Fernanda Torres. Aside her stellar performance, it would be lovely to see her win while her mother is still alive, especially when many believe Fernanda Montenegro should have gotten the Oscar for Central Station.
I don't see it happening, but a nom for Demi would be such a treat. I agree with you Brian, "inspired" is the word for that nomination, and she did SOOOO good. The academy owes it to horror fans after the Toni Collette snub.
Fernanda Torres deserves a nomination for her exceptional work in "I'm Still Here" by Walter Salles, director of "Central Station". We're rooting for her.
I think it will be Jolie (Academy loves a biopic) or Mikey (They also love a fresh newcomer)! I want Mikey to win btw! Best performance I’ve seen this year!
Please, nominate Demi Moore!!! I know the chances are low, but pleeeeease. She deserves that like nobody else. I know it's not a huge dramatic performance, but she's so up for a legacy nomination.
No way they'll leave Tilda out, specially at the globes. She's def getting it. No way Nicole Kidman is getting a nom for that movie lol. Erivo destroyed her chances with the fan-made poster thing drama
I went to see The Outrun on your recommendation. I thought Saoirse Ronan's performance was absolutely phenomenal. Definitely better than Little Women. I think she is definitely deserving of an Oscar Nomination. Fingers Crossed!
Great video, Brian! I agree it is an incredibly strong year for actress. Of your final five, I love all of those performances except Nicole Kidman's and that's only because Babygirl isn't released until Christmas day (wish it was at the New York Film Festival earlier) but will be perched to see this December 25th. Thank you once again ❤
Gascon isn’t even a lead. Saldana’s character was more prominent in the film. But then The Favourite girls had the same category mix-up. Anywho, Gascon was just okay. Zendaya and Demi Moore gave much better, Oscar-worthy performances tbh.
I’m really hoping Demi gets nominated. But I have a sinking feeling she’s going to be this year’s “genre performance that gets overlooked.” Truly wanting to be wrong on that suspicion, though.
I saw Emilia Pérez yesterday, and all I can say is that Zoe Saldana is the real lead of that film. She has the most screentime, and most of the plot moves forward because of her actions. Gascon's performance was underwhelming considering how complex her character was, I feel that the only reason people are predicting her actress nomination is because of her "first trans" narrative, which would be fine if her performance were actually a stand out.
@@gabbyb7347 You would say that regardless, because you just hate trans people, and think that misgendering her is edgy. Also, so Salad, she wouldn't be the first trans nominee in this category.
Also consider The Whale a couple years ago. Great movie in my opinion, but everyone didn't love the movie itself and it still got a couple acting nominations and one win.
Demi Moore! She was outstanding, best performance I’ve seen in a while. I’d dare to say better that Emma Stone in Poor things (which is also fantastic). If Demi gets nominated this will restaure my faith in the Oscars. Go Demi!
I also hope Demi gets a nod too, for her best performance ever, and the money she brought in for studios in the 90s. If look at her filmography during that time, the vast majority of her films include Best Actor/Actress/Director co stars. To name a few Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, Anne Bancroft, Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman.
I think The Substance is too heavy and gore for the Academy. And since I watched the trailer, I bet Jean-Baptiste will be nominated, Academy loves Leigh.
In a year of great performances I truly admire Demi Moore in The Substance. She gave a bold performance with a great amount of range: despair, regret, rage and so on. A performance for the ages
The entire brazillian population is rooting for Fernanda. We never forgot the Oscar nomination for her mom and we stil think the award was robbed from her, since it went to Gwyneth Paltrow . It would be a delight to see Torres in the category, some would call that justice would be made.
Something interesting I noticed about The Outrun. It opened here and only played for a few weeks before it disappeared. I never got a chance to see it while it was here. This week I noticed that it's BACK in theaters for some reason. Like they added it back to the lineup after taking it out. I'm not sure what that means, if anything... but I'm gonna try to go see it while I can.
With a lot of the recent regional critics announcing their nominations, why it seems like they don’t like Nicole Kidman? It seems like it also happen during her earlier day and also previous performance in earlier years
I think Demi Moore gets in. I'm just feeling that it's going to happen. 1. Mikey Madison 2. Karla Sofía Gascón 3. Angelina Jolie 4. Nicole Kidman 5. Demi Moore The only upset I can see at this point (which would not be an upsetting upset by any means) is Saoirse Ronan.
Every people cry about the oscars but i saw people making debates about films and performances since 2022 and i loved it how people still paying attention and talking about the oscars
I’m surprised to hear you say Angelina Jolie is due for best actress. By your logic, I would think Tilda Swinton is more deserving. Let us know what you think after seeing Maria, please. I have seen only terrible reviews so far.
Lawrence was on her 2nd oscar nom when she won and had just played Katniss and Mystique. Not new. Stone was on her 2nd oscar nom when she won and she had been in tons of stuff like The Help, Zombieland and Easy A. Brie Larson had 20+ acting credits before she won. None of them was an unknown to the level of Mikey Madison.
It's funny because I don't think this is a competitive year at all lol. And I think some of the best performances were in movies that premiered earlier in the year.
It's time to honor these two brilliant actresses, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in "Hard Truths" and Fernanda Torres in "I'm Still Here".

Aside her stellar performance, it would be lovely to see her win while her mother is still alive, especially when many believe Fernanda Montenegro should have gotten the Oscar for Central Station.
nicole kidman, amy adams, demi moore.
they did the best.
i want pamela anderson to get it so bad
I don't see it happening, but a nom for Demi would be such a treat. I agree with you Brian, "inspired" is the word for that nomination, and she did SOOOO good. The academy owes it to horror fans after the Toni Collette snub.
And how about Fernanda Torres?
I think Josh O'Connor is definitely a solid choice for supporting actor
Gascon isn’t even a lead. Saldana’s character was more prominent in the film. But then The Favourite girls had the same category mix-up. Anywho, Gascon was just okay. Zendaya and Demi Moore gave much better, Oscar-worthy performances tbh.
@@gabbyb7347 dude you are literally replying to every comment about Gascon. You are so weird. Just stop being miserable and get a life
U just gave me a whole group of films i'm excited to see
I’m really hoping Demi gets nominated.
I'm watching it in a few weeks. The reception has been mixed, though.
I watched it a few hours ago. And I not sold. Halfway through I lost my interest. But I agree about Zoe Saldana
Gascon IS marvelous in Emilia Pèrez! What are you talking about?
@@ChrolliForever no he isn't.
Two wins
What about Kate Winslet for Lee ?
Demi Moore! She was outstanding, best performance I’ve seen in a while. I’d dare to say better that Emma Stone in Poor things (which is also fantastic). If Demi gets nominated this will restaure my faith in the Oscars. Go Demi!
angelina - i will win this oscar
demi moore - hold my substance
We never forgot the Oscar nomination for her mom and we stil think the award was robbed from her, since it went to Gwyneth Paltrow
. It would be a delight to see Torres in the category, some would call that justice would be made.
"I'm Still Here" will be released in the United States on January 17, 2025 (LA and New York) Also Fernanda Torres, what a great performance!
Fernanda Torres has a great performance. She deserves a nomination.
With a lot of the recent regional critics announcing their nominations, why it seems like they don’t like Nicole Kidman? It seems like it also happen during her earlier day and also previous performance in earlier years
What if Pamela Anderson got nominated for ‘The Last Showgirl’??😀🤍
I think Demi Moore gets in. I'm just feeling that it's going to happen.
1. Mikey Madison
2. Karla Sofía Gascón
3. Angelina Jolie
4. Nicole Kidman
5. Demi Moore
The only upset I can see at this point (which would not be an upsetting upset by any means) is Saoirse Ronan.
when are you going to watch wicked? i am soo excited to hear your review of the movie 😁
Demi Moore should win for sure. Way better than Mikey Madison.
Every people cry about the oscars but i saw people making debates about films and performances since 2022 and i loved it how people still paying attention and talking about the oscars
I want Fernanda Torres, Demi and Kidman to get in so bad tbh.
Do you think Kate Winslet for lee might get a mention.
Saoirse Ronan is just incdredible and the movie is my personal favorite this year. I hope she will go all the way and win the Oscar
Amy adams night bish is NOT happening.
Amy adams needs a new agent now
Bad film after bad film
AA is one of the best females actresses of this century.
Bring on the new agent for a wonderful actor
Night Bitch is not a bad film, the reviews are mostly positive
I’d like to believe Amy Adams is a strong enough woman that she picks her own movies and doesn’t get forced into things by her agent.
Oscar’s snubbed her when she was in good films anyway.
Nicole all the way 🙌🏻
She will win. This guy has no clue.
I’m surprised to hear you say Angelina Jolie is due for best actress. By your logic, I would think Tilda Swinton is more deserving. Let us know what you think after seeing Maria, please. I have seen only terrible reviews so far.
Loving Demi Moore.. it’s her Demissance 💙🩵
The academy loves young, new girls. They love giving new girls best lead actress
Emma stone
Brie larson
Jennifer Lawrence
Lawrence was on her 2nd oscar nom when she won and had just played Katniss and Mystique. Not new. Stone was on her 2nd oscar nom when she won and she had been in tons of stuff like The Help, Zombieland and Easy A. Brie Larson had 20+ acting credits before she won. None of them was an unknown to the level of Mikey Madison.
Audrey Hepburn?
I like when you put your hands together because it looks like you're praying for your faves.
Why do this video before you have seen all these performances? Not a criticism, just curious. Good overview of all the potentials.
It's funny because I don't think this is a competitive year at all lol. And I think some of the best performances were in movies that premiered earlier in the year.
