      It's also because of the pandemic. Without practicing to distract her, she had to be alone with her thoughts. And I imagine thinking about the abuse she suffered plus the sheer pressure of carrying a country's Olympic dreams must've been a lot

    • @mr.d4ve

      I also think the extra year of training didn’t help. Her coaching team is very smart and you could tell she was peaking in 2019 and was most likely gonna carry that momentum into 2020. But that extra year was obviously a tough pill to swallow and most likely derailed her training plan. She has a beautiful life outside of gymnastics so finding the motivation to train full time as an elite gymnast for one more year must’ve been extremely difficult for her.

      She’s been spotted actually training a couple of times over the past few months and she seems to have been doing some conditioning to stay in shape the whole time she’s been out. Liukin was not competing for about a year longer than Biles was and didn’t train at all during her hiatus. On top of that, Liukin was dealing with injuries during her comeback which hindered her progress even more.

      I agree with all of the comments below. Also, Nastia was not necessarily a natural athlete. She was extremely graceful, and she was an exceptionally hard worker to get into the physical condition she needed to be in when she won her Olympic gold, but I would imagine coming back for her would have been MUCH harder than it will be for someone like Simone, who seems to build power a lot more easily. Plus, Simone, throughout her career, avoided injuries more than Nastia did. That makes a huge difference as well. Not that I think it will be easy for Simone, I just think Nastia had a shorter window overall on an athletic career. If you look at Shawn and Nastia's comebacks (at the same time), Shawn (a much stronger athlete in general) was WAY ahead of Nastia in strength, even though I think they started training around the same time as each other. Shawn, however, was still recovering from a catastrophic, ultimately career-ending injury (and I also think didn't really want to do it in the end, but that's another story), so she failed as well. Simone seems strong and healthy. But I guess we'll see!!!

    Sunisa, to me, is more enjoyable to watch. She seems more fluid and graceful in her movements but still with power and conviction, whereas Simone seems a bit too.... I don't know how to say this but, like her upper body is too overpowering and doesn't look proportioned to the rest of her body in terms of fluidity in body movements, if that makes any sense.

      Everyone has their own style preference. But it's totally true that Suni can't come close to doing the athletic things that Simone can do. I love them both, but a healthy Suni can't really beat a healthy Simone.

      even for them it's doubtful one would be able to compete in female gymnastics unless they dropped all standards but if they were on hormones from a young age like some claim can be okay to compete against women (it's not), a male body would be too crippled to do these things from the hormones, it'd probably be extremely dangerous actually.
