My neighbors asked us if they could trim the trees that were obstructing their view. We have beautiful views on the hill where we live. We went to their property (on a hill, could reach better) and trimmed all the trees to restore their view. It did not affect our yard at all. They bought us a weed eater for doing it. We have great neighbors.
This is a "happy ending" story, because you didn't turn this into a major, toxic battle. Are we really that different from Neanderthals??? I always say, I have bigger battles to fight than road rage, fences, etc. And it totally steams me up when these douchebags don't appreciate how lucky they are to live in the U.S. When I see the people of Ukraine being bombed and invaded, I believe that fighting for your country is a battle worth choosing!! They're living in sub freezing temperatures in bombed out buildings, near mass graves, and their food was taken away by Russians. Then when some dirtbag neighbor starts whining about boundaries, all they know is "I, I, I, ME, ME, ME, I, I, I, BLAH BLAH BLAH. I do want to smack them, but I guess finding help from the right authorities is the best bet to obtain some peace. What hole did these people crawl out of?????
"Their" "View" Ay yi yi yi yi. Perhaps the Empire State Buiding is blocking some ghetto dweller's view of New Jersey. What should the state of New York do about it?
I'm so happy that we have good neighbors now. I've had some of the worst until we moved 10 years ago. I know it's tough to move, but our sanity needed it. Living with bad neighbors is enough to make your life hell. Regain your sanity and move away from the crappy neighbors.
I'm so glad I grew up in the seventies and never had to deal with this kind of crap because everybody these days thinks they're entitled to absolutely everything it's a tree for god sakes
My pops put up a swing for me on an overhanging branch that was on our property . The tree was situated right on the border of both propertys.(maybe half the circumference of the tree was closer to the neighbours at best). the lady cut the branch off because she said the tree was hers. To a little kid, that was a stone cold move ; bitch cut my swing down : ( her house reminded me of hansel and gretel a lot! My pops told her that all the branches and pine cones that fall over onto our property belong to her too and left it at that. This lady was a cuckoo, but her kids were alright and my dad just wanted to keep the peace. life went on... My lesson from that...know when to pick your battles! r.i.p. Pops
"Attorney Fischer says: "No tree dispute should ever escalate to violence."" Really? Thanks for that information man. Until I heard that, I thought EVERY tree dispute should escalate to violence. Boy is my face red now.
As a last resort and for people that are totally uncooperative and totally unsympathetic to what's happening on your property here's what you can do. Dig yourself several holes around the root system of that tree on your side of the property and pour in Weed-B-Gon. In the next few months the entire tree be gone🤣🤣🤣 I recommend an 18 inch deep hole and about a pint per hole.
I was thinking the same thing. You can always add a little poison to the roots that are on your side. The tree will just slowly die after that. The bonus on that is that it'll only cost you for the poison.
So cutting the roots may make the tree unstable on one side. Imagine that tree in high winds. It may actually fall on your house..wow!!! Worse, it may fall on some kid playing in your yard...Cutting roots is not always the most ideal.
I discovered in my 74 years, every neighbor wants as much of my property as they can encroach on AND like this lady, don’t give a shit what you need just to maintain a property.👎
It's really a no brainer. Anything that comes over or under the property line you can trim, cut back, whatever. I had a grape arbor at my former residence where the grapes grew over the fence. I had the opposite problem though. My neighbor didn't want me to trim back the grapes that grew over the fence. She even went so far as to dig up her own grapes because ours were more established and so produced better I guess. She was too cute.

In some areas, any part of a tree that overhangs into your property line can be legally trimmed by you. if they infringe on your use of your property.
I have a city owned tree that's lifting the side walk and curb in front of my house also destroying my wall with huge roots . The city's response too bad you can pay someone to cut the roots on your property but if the tree dies now it's my problem they will find me responsible for the damage . The government at work against the taxpayers .
Although cutting the roots on your side may sound like a good idea, if you weaken the tree you have a 50-50 chance of the bugger coming down on your side in the next storm.
Yo’@@melliegirl520. No they are not, at least not in Michigan. I’m in the arboriculture industry, technically my job title is urban forester trained In aerial operations. In Michigan a home owner is responsible for anything growing over their property line. If a tree falls onto a neighboring property, it does become the responsibility of the homeowner where the tree has landed to take care of the issue. In the same instance a home owner is legally permitted to trim any branches, or roots, that extend into their yard. However, in both the aforementioned instances there are certain caveats. If a neighbor is harboring a known documented hazard tree, and refuses to address the issue, then yes they can be held accountable. Also, if a neighbor grinds out enough of the root structure of a neighboring tree as to kill the tree or render it a hazard, then they become responsible for the removal of the hazard. Either way those scenarios require documentation, usually with the City Forester, and no one wins except the lawyers involved. Typically, I simply turn down any job that threaten to be neighbor disputes. Life is just too short, and there are no shortage of people needing tree work. When I go out to give an estimate/consultation not only am I there to answer a potential clients questions and give them the benefit of my nearly three decades experience, help them make the best choice for themselves in regards to arboriculture, but I also am assessing the level of “crazy” I might be walking into. Some jobs just aren’t worth the hassle.
Hint: Don't plant large trees close to boundaries Hint 2: Trees grow. Think 30 years into the future Hint 3: Tree roots are destructive. They push over fences and undermine foundations. All common sense. You'd think.
You are allowed to address a tree that is encroaching on someone else's property by cutting branches that cross your property line, or in this case, digging up and eliminating the roots causing the problem. Just don't trespass on your neighbor's property without permission! It would take a lot of work to dig up the roots, unfortunately. Even if you cut the tree down, the roots remaining underground could still pose problems later. A huge tree like this could probably survive losing some of its roots.
Moon Pie The moron knew the tree was there long before he started his backyard project. Why not cement over the roots or just prune surface roots. Guys a moron if you ask me, buy the way I'm a arborist of 30 years.
Moon Pie Ya sorry I know you did say that and if they called me to remove it I would talk them out of it or refuse the job. I bet that lady was horrified when she saw what it looked like after it was removed . I've seen people in tears over stuff like this many times. They don't realize how bad it will look till its to late and the tree that's been there for years is gone. I m always real honest with customers although I'm retired now.
You mean "your property." You are correct. Owners are responsible for whatever encroaches onto their property from next door. Otherwise, there would be chaos.
I had complete strangers come to my door to bitch me out for cutting down the tree that grew on our beach. They had some strange idea that eagles roosted there
We had a neighbor with a large tree. It was rotten and splitting into 3 gigantic section, 2 portions leaned over the center distribution area of the power lines. The two huge portions dropped about a year or two apart, right on the power lines for the entire neighborhood. Each time the power was out for days. Affecting 40 homes. Each time everyone had to throw out the contents of the refrigerators and freezers. At $250 a person (minimum estimate), that’s around $10,000 for everyone. It happened 2 times so that’s $20,000. The repairs to the line cost the city $15,000. (I asked.). So $35,000 at least was lost. The owner didn’t want to spend the $750 to take the tree down because when it fell, the city would pay for the removal. So they got free tree removal. They didn’t care about anyone else. It was a very dangerous tree. I was hoping the last third of it would fall on their house, but no luck there. It just barely missed.
Why didn't the whole neighborhood chip in and have the tree taken down & Removed? Saved everyone time & money. I'm guessing the person couldn't afford it themselves.
I have a city tree roots that's lifting the city sidewalk and curb in front of my house and damaging my wall . I asked if the could trim the roots Nope it's my problem ,hire an arborist but if they cut the roots and it damages the tree I'm responsibile for any damages . Nice catch 22 typical government B S . By the way it's a city sidewalk except in the winter then it belongs to me to shovel it .
HG be careful, in some states if you cut roots from a neighbors tree that are growing in your yard AND the tree in question dies you can be held responsible for it !. If however you just cut any branches overhanging YOUR property that is legal. Root cutting without asking your neighbor first can run into a big problem for you !.
If the roots were the ONLY problem why couldn't they just cut the roots where needed? In South Carolina, any part of a tree growing OVER onto your property you can cut that part of the tree by law. Always good to talk to neighbors FIRST. Glad they worked it out. .
+Alexa C.........Yep, sure did. After reading all of this, I am going to make sure my (few trees) are not infringing upon any property, not even my own.
Umm, I think you've missed the point. If this were my property, my solution would have been to trim the tree and remove the roots on my property. This way, everyone comes away happy. However, these two decided to have the tree removed.
What if the tree roots are growing underneath the neighbor home, which will damage the home. So what's the approach? sue the offender? how can you remove the root beneath the home?
right now the house next to mine is empty.. the owner left it abandon and that big creepy tree in the back of their house, is now slowly growing to my house... i make report of this and nothing happens till now... and i must clean the branch and leaves that falling to my yard like everyday since the wind work pretty good here... damn neighbour!!
Where I live there are ordinances that allow you to cut any branches or roots at the property line. The property line extends from the ground straight up into space. If the roots or branches are on your side of the Property line you have the right to remove them.
You can cut tree roots without removing a tree. Also, if you don’t like your neighbors tree you can buy that tree from him remove it and replace it with something that you like for the right amount of money. I’m not talking about cheap, I’m just saying with money all things are possible...
I have city tree damaging my property was told they will not trim the roots damaging my property I can hire my own arborist to do it but if the tree is damaged it's my problem the city will find me responsible . It's even lifting the sidewalk and curbstone someone fell over it last year . Bad cities are worse .
In a non fantasy world, it's a tremendous amount of work to remove a tree and the tree branches are not light. Some of them can weigh a few hundred pounds. You then have to cut them up. Most people don't want to do the work, that's why they hire tree services.
My neighbor had damn near dead tree she didn't want to cut. The neighbors around her property was worried about it galling on our roofs. She dudnt care. Everyone told her she w will be responsible for the repair of the roofs even worse that hurt with death of someone. She still didn't care she was just in the mood to be stubborn how did we tell her what to do with her tree type attitude. We even brought out some one that told her to treat is that is dead nearly just as proof that she's aware of the dangers of the tree so she can't back out later and say I didn't know. Of course a strong New York wind took that tree down land on somebody's house. Then she going to start to say was an act of God and she's not responsible. Little does she know the courts felt otherwise.
Tree conflict: Call police. “It’s a civil matter” Civil court doesn’t handle it, or the court decision is ignored. Someone gets shot. Oh, now it’s a police matter 🤦🏻
There is a diseased tree that actually before we moved in 22 yrs ago was a sucker - allowed to go wild. Per a survey the tree is 1/2 on our property & 1/2 on neighbors. According to owner he likes the tree even though they are seldom in their backyard for all the weeds & overgrowth. We offered to go 1/2’s to have it removed, they weren’t interested. If it falls in a storm, hopefully it will fall on his property. Any damage it causes will be way more $$ than taking it down would cost.
I’ve had neighbors get mad over leaves blowing in their yard from mine on a very windy day. I explained that I cannot stop Acts of God from occurring. The very next day the wind shifted and was very strong putting most of the leaves back in my yard. I never heard from him again after that.
Joe B were all wound so tight living the rat race. Government taxes us into poverty. Little things get blown out of proportion. Hate? I'm not sure. But folks certainly are judgemental. Me. I would have never paid to cut down my own tree. That neighbor didn't see the roots when he started the project. I would let him cut it down at his cost. Just to be cool.
He should not have to pay half for the tree coming down she should have to pay a whole and if she can’t afford it go someplace to live where she can’t afford
before you buy a house drive by at different times of day see what's going on go to local police station and ask if there are alot of calls there save urself problems🚔
I waited until my neighbor left his house and I trimmed his tree and took the branches to another neighbors house and burned them before he came home. He didn't notice the tree being trimmed and I never let him know.
Yes u do! That's what am going to do ! When my neighbor roots tree come into my yard ! I dont deal with my neighbor i ignore everyone! Period I use to be friendly but most of them they don't like ASIAN! 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂
Her arguments are totally invalid. Go with the law. The property line rules. Cut ANYTHING you want on, over, or under your property. "I like the tree." LOL Blondes everywhere insulted. BTW, the law says if your neighbor's tree comes down in a storm, YOUR insurance is on the line, NOT the tree owner.
Sounds like you're a good neighbor to him as well.🙂
That’s rare.
You should end the story after the word “weed” and remove the “a” .
This is a "happy ending" story, because you didn't turn this into a major, toxic battle. Are we really that different from Neanderthals??? Bahahaha!
Just poison the roots on your side of the fence.
As a last resort and for people that are totally uncooperative and totally unsympathetic to what's happening on your property here's what you can do. I love how she says the tree was not effecting my property
I thought that statement was illogocal.
I noticed that too.
Cut the roots that are on your side. Cut the branches that are hanging over your side. Don't touch their side. How is this difficult to understand?
I was thinking the same thing. You can always add a little poison to the roots that are on your side. The tree will just slowly die after that. The bonus on that is that it'll only cost you for the poison.
Bleach. Don't need anything else.
How difficult is it for you to understand a court can order the entire thing brought down as a nuisance.
then you got rotten limbs dangling over your house and any high winds could pop em off like a candy cane.
So cutting the roots may make the tree unstable on one side. Imagine that tree in high winds. It may actually fall on your house..wow!!! Worse, it may fall on some kid playing in your yard...Cutting roots is not always the most ideal.
That's why I bought a property with a lot of acreage a long time ago.

I worked for a tree service for years, the law is simple , hangs over your property line cut. Roots on your property cut

I had complete strangers come to my door to bitch me out for cutting down the tree that grew on our beach. They had some strange idea that eagles roosted there
Newsflash: the problem was never the trees
So my neighbour asked nicely for us to sort my tree out as it was leaning against their fence. We had it cut down... What's the problem???
money
More room for the tree after the fence was cut down...

FOOD TREE cut down❓

Is it really expensive to get some branch cut down?
globe255 Get up in that tree with a hatchet its $20 or$30 dollars for a good one. Chop them branches off.
