    This may seem like a dumb question, but nobody really has a good answer. Does whiskey expire? Can your bourbon go bad?
    The answer lies in your preference and taste, but I have a few recommendations, regardless.

    I was helping my Grandpa repair a old storage building when I was around twenty. As we got in to the walls of the building. He found a pint of whiskey. No label, he twisted the cap off. Took a big swig. Put the cap back on and told me to take it out to the car. “ I’ll drink that later” lol

    In 2017, a friend gave me a still sealed 1974 One Litre (sic) of Seagram’s V.O. Canadian Whisky that his father had purchased back then and the whisky tasted fine, very smooth and still had an alcohol effect and we saved the empty bottle!
    No problem with it being 49 years old! My friend didn't drink whisky, but saved it all those years, till he moved.
    (The whisky had matured in a oak cask for 6 years before being bottled by Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in 1974)

      Interesting . I came across a bottle of Canadian Masterpiece bottled in 1959 and gladly bought it for $25 USD . It came in a feaux leather case and said it was selected for (xxxx xxxxxxxx) . The old timer I bought it from said it was a cousin of his who had it , the label confirms that it was " selected" for such person . I have really wanted to open it but I would love to find realatives that would be intersted in having a drink with a stranger 😉 . Peace from Tennessee !

    Per the Whisk[e]y Vault guys the flavour will change, as you stated with more air exposure, and, as the bottle gets about half empty then, it is best to invite your friends over, to finish it or, transfer it to a smaller bottle. Hope this helps. Cheers.

    That is a darn good whiskey you have there ☺ , and it easy to find around here . Regular Four Roses is a fantastic go to for a good bourbon that tastes good straight or on the rocks , yet I wouldn't cry if it was used in a cocktail . Small batch has been constantly good 👍 and single has ranged a little from "Most Respecteble" to "This is 'IT' " . Respect from Tennessee

    I have many open bottles that are probably over a year old, and so far they taste normal to me. I do drain a bottle that has, say, a 1/3'rd or less if I think its been around too long though. A lot of guys on here don't understand how a bottle can last so long without finishing...having a well stocked home bar is how that happens. I've got a decent amount of opened bourbon bottles, but far from a big collection. I just now counted 14 different bourbon's...not to mention the Rum, Vodka, Tequila, Cordials, etc.

    6-8 months? I bought a bottle of Eagle Rare... I'd be lucky if this stuff could make it a fraction of that time.

    We had a couple bottles, one bourbon and a whiskey, they had sat for quite a while. The bourbon had like a coagulation floating in the middle of it and it had a definite odd smell going on. The whiskey was a little better but it had some floating stuff in it as well. We don't drink often but it is nice to have one once in awhile. We dug a little and decided to not drink them as getting sick wasn't something anyone wanted to do. I was wondering if you or anyone else has ever seen that happen to a bourbon.

    Wait... six to eight months? I'm not sure I've had a whiskey last much longer than 2-3!
    Great video, man. Just stumbled across it, but it's good to know, especially for folks who get their hands on something good and try to stretch it out forever. Sometimes, you just gotta live in the moment, right? ;)

    Over Xmas, I tried some of my Dad's Eagle Rare bottled back the late 70's, which is aged 10 years, and so 50 year old Bourbon that has been keep in a box in the basement tasted pretty good. 101 proof but I got very little burn off of it. Goos stuff. It doesn't "go bad".

    To me, i prefer the last bit of a bottle. The last bit tastes subtle, no more bite, no more sharpness. Pure tastiness, but that's the last bit.....

  • @Dafoodmaster

    the number i've been told is 5 years - it will change over that 5 years of course.
    personally i would agree that the one or two bottles i've left open for longer than that have "turned", but not to a level where they're undrinkable.
    i've never used inert gas, but i just try to open bottles as one is empty - i did the math, for the alcohol consumption that i'm comfortable with (5 drinks a week) that's somewhere around 50 bottles open at one time. I've thought about using smaller bottles as a storage medium or going for the inert gas, but haven't pulled the trigger on that yet

    A bottle is open for a year and I have been falling sick when drinking it lately. Can it actually be very bad for health? Al though taste is great but after 48 hours I fall sick and have alcoholic fever - I drink 3-4 times a year and have kept 1liter bottle. Pls suggest.

    Not a whisky expert but I do notice a change in the flavor intensity,More specific the same flavours are all there but in different values, thats how it seems to me though.This doesn't mean it went "bad" it went different, In one occasion a scotch started to actually taste better when it was below half imo.

    Whiskey never lasts long in my house lol but from experience it takes a VERY long time to go bad and I shouldn’t say bad just flat. My dad had two bottles nearly 20 years old one was half full and the other was nearly empty and the one that was half full tasted fine and the one that was almost empty just tasted a bit flat. It was Jack btw.

    Sensible advice my friend and I just subscribed. Whisky does change once opened, usually for better but leave it too long and it can go a little flat. I should gas some of mine but I never do. I like to see how it evolves. Most bottles are finished within a year and I must have 100 bottles on the go. Peated Scotch suffers the most. Cheers. WT

    My girlfriends grandfather passed a few months ago, we inherited his drink kit with a few bottles, J&B and Bacardi, the whiskeys are in pretty old looking bottles.
    The whiskey tastes dusty like the bottles look, I mean I’m still sipping it right now soooooooo

Oxidized bourbon I find has like.............a very volatile taste.........almost like a vinegary gasoline.........it's quite nasty actually LOL!

    If I don't open the bottle but store it in the basement will it age, just like in the barrel? will the quality still increase over say, 10 years?

    • @MidwestUTV
      @MidwestUTV หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whisky does not “age” outside of a barrel. Whisky barrels pull in and release whisky and flavor by the changing temps throughout the year. In a bottle it just sits dormant.

    • @kuroneko9710
      @kuroneko9710 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Half empty is still good enough... Leave about 100ml of bourbon in a 1,750ml bottle for a month or so. It will remain drinkable of course but the taste will definitely be different and in many cases far less pleasant then before. The degree of degradation depends on the ratio of air to whiskey in the bottle.

    • @chainer8686
      @chainer8686 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It happened to me but I didn't know it was opened. I think it was my friend, brother, or wife opened a bottle I had put away. When I drank some, thinking it had been opened recently, it felt like I was drinking dirty water with no alcohol content. I even thought at one point someone drank most of it and refilled it with water.

    I have had a few bottles opened for over 4 years. I have done taste tests with big time Bourbon guys who didn't know the time those bottles had been opened. They all said its just like it should be or better than they remember. Dark Climate Controlled area and its fine. I have a bookers that's 4 year old and opened and its still hot and fine. LOL!!!!! I have heard its all about the level of liquid left in the bottle that's the bigger factor. CHEERS!!!

    Lets be honest all alcohol is bad for you so leave it in the bottle or open and seal it over a few years i can promise you it doesn't change much and people who say it will expire honesty i highly garuntee nothing bad is going to come from it 😂ive never gone bad of any sorts of whiskeys from aged ones, opened ones thats been sat for years ect it honestly wont hurt you just probably hit you like a brick wall 😂
