It's so difficult being a huge fan of fantasy books and a fan of romance but not a single fantasy romance book is good enough for you and, to be honest, often make you question why on earth you picked them up in the first place 🥲 I read From Blood and Ash 2 years ago and boy, that book still haunts me to this day. I 100% agree with you and you should be glad you didn't finish it. I also agree with you on Serpent and the Wings of Night, this world and plot and characters just made no sense to me haha and don't get me started on Fourth Wing...though I totally get why you'd reconsider picking it up again. I picked it up, hoping that I would just have fun with it but my brain was not having it 😅 Also, I was excited to pick up Fireborne but now I'm hesitant😶🌫 In that case, I hope we don't share opinions on EVERY book! Love your content btw and your taste in books (in my opinion) is chef's kiss🤌

your thoughts about shades of magic just gave me so much anxiety bc i bought the collector's editions of all 3 books without even having read the first one yet (ik this is extremely stupid but i've loved all of her other work so far so i thought i'm safe 😭)

It took me a while to get used to the dual 1st person POVs in Fireborne, but I still enjoyed the story enough to continue, and then later it hit me with one of my favorite tropes and I fell in love with the book overall. I still haven't picked up the sequel and I really don't know why....

I read The Book Eaters this year and only ended up giving it 2 stars. And I read the first two books in the expanse several years ago and I didn't hate them but I also didn't care where the series was going
oh no! sad that the book eaters didn't work for you. and when i hear other people not loving the expanse, it makes me feel less bad about dropping it 🤣
I'm with you on Fireborne, although I did not make it anywhere near that far. I think I only made it a chapter or two? I just really don't like dual 1st person POVs, regardless of tense. But people rave about it so much that it's hard to put it as a hard DNF!

With Fireborne I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue the series after that first book, but I decided to because I didn’t hate it and I knew people that loved it, and I fell in love after that. But I loved it for the politics of the world, I only liked the characters rather than loved, and dragons are whatever to me. Haha. I read the book Eaters as well and it was a mess for me. I wish I had just dnf’d that one 😅
Have to add, I read a darker shade of magic and didn’t continue the series mainly because I hated Lyla(don’t know if I spelled that right) lol
wait maybe i should just dnf the book eaters permanently then HAHAHA. i'm still curius where the story goes though! AND LMAO YEAH LILA IS THE WORST
Omggg! I’m reading Firebourne right now and i feel the exact same way 😅 i think I’m going to finish it still but i could care less about anybody in that book 😭 that’s two dragon books in a row that disappointed me 💔 please leave suggestions because i still want my dragon fix! 😅

The Expanse is an odd series. I watched the show and loved so much about it, but some of the characters (Holden) were just so darn infuriating. And majority of the plot lines bored me. But on the other hand some of my favourite characters come from the series and the plot gets so crazy towards the end. But I am STRUGGLING with the books. I started the 4th book and put it down after 3 chapters. And I think you nailed it…it’s the narrator! 🥱
Also, I’m tempted to pick up Fourth Wing again. FOMO! But I think it’ll have to be eyes only because the audiobook makes the MC’s thirst WAY too obvious.

I DNF'd the Shades of Magic series after the second book for pretty much that same reason you hated it.
SPOILERS FOR A GATHERING OF SHADOWS
I also absolutely HATED Lila's character, especially when she was all "I'm gonna join this competition just for the lols and take this innocent man's place and basically kidnap him cause I'm just so wild and fearless and do not care about anyone else hahaha I'm the best thief there is and now I suddenly know magic too!". The other characters were so bland and I just stopped caring about what happened to any of them.
HAHAHA when i wrote my review for a gathering of shadows, i referenced THAT EXACT SCENE. it was so ridiculous, and she suffered zero consequences, i couldn't believe it
Holden’s joke for the entire series is that he keeps getting pulled into the hero role. So if that bugs you, this series might not be for you. It’s my favorite sci fi series and there are some of my favorite female characters.

One of the best sci-fi series of our time DNF based on that? Not really a good idea. The Expanse is something that has been praised for a very good reason. And I DNF acotar for abuse and as it seems, you didn’t. So we could talk about the classic issue of relationship problems.
