I have the same thing with romances, where I need to be invested in both characters as individuals to really lose it for the romance. I gotta get to a Marvellous Light 😪I wish I had loved Emily Wilde more.

You sold me on The Emperor's Edge; I went and got it on kindle as I watched this video XD Mostly, my favorite romantic subplots come from the YA genre; Tamora Pierce's Tortall series is absolutely great for female readers, but also because of the many different kinds of romances and how the characters handle them. We go from exploring romance until you find the right one ("The Song of the Lioness"), to just hard-core slowburn ("The Immortals"), and then to "I feel things, but I'm too busy to really deal with this" ("The Protector of the Small"). I've been reading her books for years, and I won't shut up about them XD

I don't really read much in the romance genre, it just isn't for me. But I love a choose your own partner in games like Dragon Age or a cute/angsty subplot like Carrot and Angua in Discworld or Alanna and Jon in Song of the Lioness. And though I'm iffy on the actual romance, from a practical standpoint, I was down with Burrich and Molly teaming up in Farseer.

I was surprised the last book actually got them together. I haven't read any books past Assassin's Quest yet, but judging by the blurbs on later books, methinks that doesn't stay a happy union forever.
