This was therapeutic to me somehow. I have so many series hanging over my head that I haven’t finished because I didn’t enjoy them but still feel compelled to just for the closure. Listening you to cut ties and say sayonara to these series hit me with some kind of revelation 😄❤️

Why if the first books are so good do the authors feel they need to continue on to make series? I’d be happy as a reader to condense all ideas into one amazing novel. Yes? No?

I'd lie if I said that I didn't gasp when you mentioned the Shades of Magic series, but I can totally see your point about VE Schwab. Like I loooooved SOM but Gallant gave me such visceral anger I couldn't deal with myself. Lately, I've noticed that I've felt more comfortable with putting down books because I'm busier therefore my time feels more precious, and I don't want to waste it on books that I don't feel from the get-go. I try to be cautious tho because I've read some books (actually SOM falls in this category too) that I didn't feel at all at the beginning but it got so much better later on that it was worth it XD
a darker shade of magic is on my list too babes lol. I could not finish it. I actually DNF'd the first one lol.
Some honorable mentions
- Foundryside (I like the first book, like I just want to read other things more than the rest of that series)
- A curse so dark and lonely
- The Wheel of Time
- The Poppy War (I read 1 and 2 and I just don't know if I can handle the emotional damage)
The final book in the poppy war was so good. I was devastated at the end, but it was so worth it.
I didn't like Poppy War as much as everyone else. Didn't read the 3rd book either.
I also DNF'd A darker shade of magic. Just couldn't get into it!
I got a third of the way through The Crown of Gilded Bones and just naturally stopped picking it up. If I'm reaching for other books, and finishing them, I'm definitely DNF'ing.
It's 'The Scholomance' series for me. Everyone raved about the first book, so I picked it up and boy, did I regret it lmao
I started to just put the books down for a bit if I am not feeling them. I start something else and keep the other one somewhere visible (on a log or in an actual place if it is physical) if I do not remember to go back to the other book then I am not feeling it enough- no other excuses or research about it needed. 😀 If I randomly hear abut the ending then I will listen but thats it.

I totally agree with everything you said about the Sades of Magic series! I had to drop it too because of Lila, she was way too annoying, and that "romance" *gag*. I wish it was more about the different Londons, such a disappointment.
I am not going to continue FBAA however, I did enjoy the “prequel” A Shadow in the Ember more! I am planning to read book 2 in that series when it comes out next week.
i found the prequel to be more of the same, but it was definitely better than book 3!

Kingdom of the feared was my favorite book in the KOTW series. It gave me everything I wanted from the first two books. Since you’re on the fence about this one, I would highly encourage you to give the third one a shot!

Series I DNFed: Truly Delicious, shadow and bone ( it’s not bad it’s just it was so hyped up and it didn’t deliver), the bone season, and diviners. I almost forgot the Scholormance series and Atlas six which for both of these series, I have no idea why people go nuts over these.

I was struggling to get through the Crown of Gilded Bones😂. Repetitive and just not really moving forward I guess. From Blood and Ash was so good tho and still have my copy. it was the first series I thought of when I clicked the video hehe.

I love a darker shade of magic, but youmade me laugh so much hahahaha I don't like lilah/lila (can't remember how her name is written), I loved the world and all the other characters, especially white london !
Although I have read the entire KOTW series I completely agreed with your thoughts on it! The first book was everything you would want for fall reading. The last 2 books just tried to do too much and became so confusing! The only reason I really liked the last 2 books was just because of the romance tbh 😕
Same! I still enjoyed them but my biggest problem with the 3rd one is that the author was trying to make us believe that the plot was thought through like this from the very beginning when it was very obvious it wasn’t 😅
The only series I did not finish was the addicted/Calloway sisters series. In my defence I gave it a good trial period (read 4 books in total) lol

I have found myself not wanting to continue in a few series this year - The Good Girls Guide to Murder, Gemma Doyle, and The Winternight Trilogy. Not surprised that two of them are YA…

I also DNFed darker shade of magic and kingdom of the wicked. I actually loved the first in DSOM but book 2 was the worst. And I even started book 3 but I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. Also I read red rising which everyone loves but I gave it a 2 star. I think for me sometimes I wonder if my mood affects things/ if the format I read it in affected it. I listened to the first two in the raven cycle and I wonder if I would have enjoyed them more physically. Maybe I’ll try that one day but for now there’s like 9 million other books to read lol
I didn't dnf shades of magic but I definitely struggled reading it, it was my first book by her and I was so disappointed after hearing so many good things. It wasn't that the book was bad, is only that it wasn't for me for the exact same things you said (except the romance, for me it wasn't enough, and it felt like it lacked) plus everything was on the same tone, there wasn't a moment I was excited about something happening of curious about what was going to happen next
ADSOM is my favorite fantasy trilogy (sorry not sorry) ever, but I totally agree about FBAA. I started the third book and got about 10% in and then just could not anymore! I also DNF'd Twisted Love after a couple chapters, but I really wanted to read Twisted Hate so I just skipped to that book and I LOVED it.

I normally stop reading series if i don't like the plot, tropes or the characters in the story. Most of the time i don't care about the ending because if i cared that much i would still read the books, or i ask other people or the interent how the books end.
I LOL'd that FBAA was first on the list cuz girl, same. xD I have the first two, I loved them and then by the third it was just repetitive.
Another one I DNF'd this year was the All Souls Trilogy. I liked the first one, but the time travel really put me off the second. :/
Throne of Glass, loved the first 2 books and fell off the band wagon on Heir of fire like over 10 years ago. Sometimes i want to pick it back up because of how beautiful nerdy inks new dust jackets are.... but it will only be for that 😂

Jack The Ripper Series by Maniscalco, I managed 3 books, I even bought the last book, but it remains unread on my shelf. I got bored.
recently, i've given up on the his dark materials series. i read book one and it was a four star. i just felt very disconnected from the characters and the plot didn't interest me. usually i have to really care about the characters or the plot (or ideally both) to keep going with a series. a very unpopular opinion from me, but i stopped halfway through the first diviners book because the main character drove me insane.🤷♀️
-Same thoughts about KOTW, liked book 1 fine but book 2 was still a letdown.
-i wish i had dnfed ADSOM, i was waiting for it to get better but it never did..
I don't even know that half the books, especially books with romance, are series and when I try reading the second book I just give. So I just ditch the series and know that at least I enjoyed the first book and that's absolutely okay.
Book 2 of the Damned felt like it was trying to capitalize on the popularity of the current YA books. It felt like the book looked around and saw that these creatures were popular now and thought they should make a book like that now.
I agree with you about The Blood & Ash Series, I also stopped at the third book because it was so boooring. As for the Kingdom of the Wicked series, I am on the third book and omg, I hate it, I should DNF it, but I am still pushing myself to finish it. For the Twisted Series, read the first book, realised how cringe and bad it is, got rid of it. I kept face palming myself after every page because of how cringe it was, I want those 4 hours of my life back, please and thank you :')
Kingdom of the wicked: I real thought I was the only person that was not understanding key points I’ve had to reread a section maybe 2-3 times, I started reading the third book and stopped half way cause I’m clueless as to what’s going on

Oof i had to dnf Kingdom of the Wicked when i was 70% into the book. I was laughing my ass off in disbelief everyday because of how chaotic and absurd everything and everyone was.
I didn't make it past a few chapters lol. It was weird, and not good weird.

I did not like Twisted Love but Twisted Games and Hate were so much better to me. She fixes that time jump issue and the random ass side plot in those.

Thank you so much for this video. I have to confess I have a problem. It's very hard for me to DNF a book, and even more a series. I keep thinking that, even though I didn't like this book, the next one may be better. But, although DNFing is a novel concept for me, I am learning. This year I have dropped a few series that are just not doing it for me. I dropped The Sorcerer's Ring series by Morgan Rice. I started reading this series years ago and king of forgot about it but picked it up again this year. Either I grew out of it or the series truly got worse and worse until I couldn't stand it. I really hate when the characters I once loved start acting out of character and unrecognizable. I also dropped the Millennium series by Stieg Larson. I liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but when I was reading The Girl who Played with Fire I realized I really don't like stories where women are abused, violated, harassed, discriminated against, etc. This series is not worth my mental health. I also dropped the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. This one hurt because I have been wanting to read it for years and I would probably have liked it five or ten years ago. But I am so over this concept at this point in my life that I could not stand it. Also, I am currently reading A Mirror Mended, the second book in the Fracture Fables series by Alix E. Harrow. I love the idea of this series but I simply can't stand Zinnia, the main character. I'm not sure if I will continue with this series if and when the third book is published. And to answer your question: no, I am not even a little bit interested on what happens next in these series. Thank you again!!

Normally, I don't dnf series. However, I am starting to realize that the only way I dnf a series is if the first book wasn't good enough or warrant more than one book afterwards. For example: The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. I came into it thinking it was a standalone only to find out that it's a trilogy and I though to myself "oh hell no!" So, I haven't touched The Atlas Paradox and not anticipating The Atlas Complex either. Another example: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. I didn't even bother to finish it. I stopped halfway through. I already knew it's in a series, but I knew I wouldn't like it. I have never read a series where I just stop in the middle of it. Hopefully it will never happen...🤞🏾
i loved the first two books of the kingdom of the wicked and ended up reading both books multiple times while waiting for the third one but once it came out i disliked the pacing and it was just all over the place i tried finding books like that but didn't really find any
lila is one of my favorite characters but you’re right she is really annoying and i love her

king of battle and blood is so good! from the characters, to the plot and the smut, everything was top tier🫶🏻
My unpopular situation/opinion is about Twisted Love. For me, personally, it was so obvious why Alex didn't get close to Ava or didn't want to interact with her, that it colored my whole reading experience. And, the point that got me upset: if you proclaim that she's yours, leaving her "for her own good" does not apply. Stay and protect her, damn it!
Do I want to know about Rhys and Bridget? Not so much at this point in time after reading Twisted Love last week.

I agree wholeheartedly about the Twisted series... I read that first book as part of a bookclub and hated it... I still don't understand why so many people love it
I couldn't even get halfway through FBAA. It was just soooo much monologuing! Without anything actually happening! The book also doesn't spend enough time discussing events that I'd imagine are way more traumatic than the author makes it seem. Many characters, including Poppy, are inconsistent. There is a lot of "tell, not show" going on, and the information revealed inside those monologues are repetitive and disorganized. I could honestly just have been given the Cliff's Notes version of this book and been more satisfied.

The series I recently started and book one already DNF was Death Games Book 1 / Find him where you left him. This seriously disappointed me for I was excited for it and bought it. Then I started reading it and I will not continue that series.

It’s From Blood and Ash, ACOTAR, and Stalking Jack the Ripper. I DNF’d the first book in From Blood and Ash and just read the first two books in ACOTAR. I read the first two books in Stalking Jack the Ripper and loved them. Book 3 however I DNF’d, I kept rolling my eyes during it. I know a lot of people adore these series and believe me I wanted to go hop on the hype train but they just didn’t work for me and thats ok. I have nothing against the people who love them but it’s not for me.

I don't believe in forcing yourself to finish something if you're not vibing with it, even if it could be your favourite book in the end. you're meant to enjoy the journey not just the destination.

As someone that did finish A Darker Shade of Magic series I’m just gonna say… you’re not wrong. You did yourself a solid. I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t like it as much as I could have because Lila was just unbearable. She never gets better. Just.. yeah no.

i recently read a broken blade by melissa blair and theoretically, it would've been my favorite book ever because the main character is an assassin (as well as queer and indigenous) and the plot involves fae and elves and a broken kingdom, but my god was it boring and I had to dnf it

I started reading the Cruel Prince series and I just can't get into it. I'm up to chapter thirteen and it just seems to keep getting worse and worse. Everyone says that it's amazing, I don't know if I should just suck it up and keep reading, or give up on it.
Hey I started the series a few weeks before you and thought the same during the first half of the book. It was just to much exposition and unnecessary chapters at the start. But trust me at the end of the book you won't be able to put it away. The ending gets so intens and it will be filled with so much tension. After finishing the first I immediatly had to by the second because the first started so strong. Trust me and keep reading. The end will be amazing

I DNFed the Crave series by Tracy Wolffe. I'm not really a fan of paranormal romance, so the series already had a strike against it before I even started. After reading the first book, I thought it was alright and proceeded to read the second book, Crushed. 🤡🤡🤡...... That second book put me in a reading slump for about 2-3 months and not the good kind. Easily one of the top five worst books I ever read.

I did finish the Kingdom of the Wicked series and it was... fine. Like you the way the author describes settings and sensations are definitely her strong suit but plotwise, meh. They're fine "turn your brain off" type books but otherwise not really worth the read imo
The all souls trilogy ***runs away**- I loved discovery of witches and gave it 5 stars. But I was 150 pages into the second one and sooo bored

Bone Shard Daughter was such a hard DNF for me. I HATED it. So much was wrong with that book from pointless POV's, pointless drama for dramas sake, convoluted magic that just simply didn't work at the end, but the borderline incestuous twist at the end was where I drew the line. Big no thanks.
I started the American Roommate Experiment and it is so bad. I just don't want to keep picking it up. The couple has no chemistry and they barely spent time with other people so far. The characters truly are a sleeping pill
