    May I just add that lyrics are sung not in contemporary Polish, but in the Silesian dialect of past centuries. For many Poles it's challenging to understand it totally, but Beth delivered brilliantly. Extraordinary performance.

      This is Highlanders dialect exactly and the music has harmonic of Polish Tatry Mountains culture. Still a good shot this is not official Polish.
      Highlanders dialect has a specific role in our culture and is used to express the most unleased emotions. This is my opinion, not a rule. My observation.

    Just discovered this version after having been in love with Dawn Upshaw's version for nearly 30 years. Her slightly broken voice adds a different kind of anguish. Whether she is classically trained matters not. Her voice is beautiful and gives out such emotion 💔

      Interesting comment, without dought this is an extremely moving piece of music whether you know the text or not. Just as yourself I got to now it from the Upshaw recording but always felt something was missing, then some time later I discovered the early recording of Stefania Woytowicz, then I understood, Upshaw lacks the raw emotion, it is also worth listening to Rebecca Evans performing it, the emotion is in her as well.

    ~LYRICS~
    Where has he gone
    My dearest son?
    Perhaps during the uprising
    The cruel enemy killed him
    Ah, you bad people
    In the name of God, the most Holy,
    Tell me, why did you kill
    My son?
    Never again
    Will I have his support
    Even if I cry
    My old eyes out
    Were my bitter tears
    to create another River Oder
    They would not restore to life
    My son
    He lies in his grave
    and I know not where
    Though I keep asking people
    Everywhere
    Perhaps the poor child
    Lies in a rough ditch
    and instead he could have been
    lying in his warm bed
    Oh, sing for him
    God's little song-birds
    Since his mother
    Cannot find him
    And you, God's little flowers
    May you blossom all around
    So that my son
    May sleep happily
    ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      that's a lovely way of putting it. i was undecided if i enjoyed this as much as the Upshaw recording as Beth's high notes are a little off, but you're right in the context of the piece: broken works as the rest of Beth's delivery is beautifully on-point.

    I'm a classical musician that loves this because I love Beth Gibbons a lot. Portishead was as much of my musical journey when I was younger as Mozart, Beethoven & Stravinsky. One thing that I always loved about her voice is that is solely hers and completely unique and at most times haunting. Its not always perfect, but that's what makes it beautiful. This piece is amazing with a trained singer I've played this work so I know. But this transcends to a more human level. Its a Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, Beth's voice does this justice in every way possible. Bravi!

    Although I had listened to this piece before and several other versions of the second and third movements, it never had such poignant meaning to me as this version by Beth Gibbons coupled with its English translation of the "sorrowful song."
    I had been searching for a musical work to accompany a piece that I had just recently written on the eighth anniversary of my son's death. He was an 18-year-old innocently riding his bike in our neighborhood when he was instantly killed by a drunk driver.
    A close friend had insightfully asked me if there was an appropriate musical piece to parallel the feelings which I had expressed in writing.
    This version is a perfect accompaniment.

    Dawn Upshaw is how a wonderful, trained interpreter embodies in an exceptional way the music of a composer, she is the point of reference for every "classical" version of the Symphony, Beth Gibbons is how a woman 'naturally' brings it to life, meaning actually living it before our ears, as its pain and sorrowful lament was something just happening right now, in real life. Yes she has a thin voice, not very dynamic, needs a microphone, etc. but to all those pointing out this doesn't it occur to you what this ensemble of artists is trying to do here? Giving LIFE to the piece in a new way, giving it a new VOICE, showing how much of it is conceived as a pure vehicle of feeling instead of a work of complexity and skill. And yet, how skilled are the artists involved! The Orchestra has recorded the Symphony many times...Penderecki, well, is Penderecki!... And there are not many pop/rock/whatever singers out there capable of pulling such a thing off and in such an honest, crystalline way, and if you listen to her album with Rustin Man you can tell how Beth Gibbons is a Master of modern era soulful singing. This is going to be a classic too, in my opinion, and this was in no way a commercial operation, rather a brave artistic statement.

Jonsi z Sigur Ros.

      Masakrę z tym utworem zrobiła moim zdaniem, moja ulubiona Lisa Gerrard.
      Utwór skomponował Henryk Górecki na sopran i orkiestrę wiec tu nie ma co odświeżacz bo wszystko zapisane jest w partyturze, a tekst trzeciej części to nie taki język polski jaki się słyszy na codzień tylko gwara.

      @Sir Artman Zgadzam się, że nie jest to najbardziej porywające wykonanie. Ale jednak mam pełen respekt do Beth, bo ta kobieta pochodzi z zupełnie innego świata muzycznego, a jednak podjęła wyzwanie i na swój sposób podołała. Trzeba pamiętać, że to nie jest wokalistka klasyczna. To tak, jak by człowieka grającego całe życie klasykę wrzucić do jazzowego składu i powiedzieć mu, że ma swingować i improwizować np. jak Coltrane. Też pewnie większość takich muzyków by się do końca w takiej sytuacji nie odnalazła.

    • @jilden999
      @jilden999 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dougie2150 I dlatego właśnie uważam, że jeśli już chcemy pożenić muzykę poważną z tzw. rozrywkową, to nie w ten sposób. Niech to będzie kwartet smyczkowy (np. polski Royal SQ), Jacaszek + Orkiestra kameralna Aukso czy nawet coś odważniejszego. Ciekawe jaka by była reakcja fanów, gdyby ktoś zorganizował regularny koncert Portishead, tyle że z sopranistką Aleksandrą Kurzak (albo inną) na wokalu? Podejrzewam, że praktycznie wszyscy zachodziliby w głowę, o co kaman ;)

    I remember when recordings of this music were few and difficult to find. Someone recommended this piece to me and I went to a Polish record store in northwest Chicago to buy the Polski Nagranie disc with Stefanya Woytovic. I love the Upshaw recording but this is just gorgeous. And Penderecki was a really good conductor. Great music. Great interpreters. Dzienkuje!

    To the Classical listeners who might not know who Beth Gibbons is, she was the front-woman for the group Portishead. They started in the mid-90's, and are considered pioneers in the so-called "Trip-hop" genre (combing rap/Hip-hop with mind-bending electronic music). The merged funk or dance-rhythms with jarring electronic sounds and beats, along with symphony-orchestra arrangements. Oddly, many of their songs sound like a hyper-sinister sort James Bond theme-music. Critics and alterantive-music listeners were startled by the originality of the group's style, and they garnered respect quite quickly. The over-all themes of their songs were very dark, and in minor keys. The angst in their musical sound is undoubtedly the reason that they asked her to sing the Georecki piece. They wanted to capture some of her angst to hopefully bring the Symphony to a different light. Her voice is not very big, or very strong, nor dynamic. I often lamented, as a Portishead fan, that such astounding music was recorded with such a thin voice. Yet, as with other intensely original pop groups with weak voices (The Smashing Pumpkins, perhaps being the penultimate example), Portishead pulled it off in their studio recordings. Finally, i'm not even suggesting that anyone here explore Portishead (there is a whole WORLD of music out there to explore). I simply am giving an explanation as to who this woman was and why the Polish Symphony Orchestra chose this voice for their Georecki Symphony performance. Cheers from MusicolorStudios in Bent, New Mexico!

    • @Loganlips1
      @Loganlips1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No offense to Beth or Portishead but her voice is really very thin without any dynamic range.. please listen to Dawn Upshaw with London Sinfonietta..

    • @MontoyaMatrix
      @MontoyaMatrix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, i had been commenting on that. I'm sure it was slightly promotional. To use an amazingly original goth band to sing the Sorrowful symphony would grab a completely new (and bigger) branch of listeners. A risky venture, and, even though i feel Beth pulled it off, as a conductor, i'd NOT have taken that chance, myself. And, to all idle readers, remember to note that the magic of studio-recordings and computers his what allowed frail voices such as Portishead be able to---surpass themselves, as it were. As in folk music and and Classical performance, the entire philosophy is grounded in live performance and acoustic instrumentation. If The Smashing Pumpkins had had the vocal cords of a young Pavoratti, the songs would have all gone into a completely different direction because they would have had more vocal dynamics to work with in the first place. @@Loganlips1

      Perhaps for classical music where you have preconceived notions of how the voice should sound. Live, singing Portishead tunes or her Rustin Man project, her voice achieves a dark haunting beauty.

    • @jfr9964
      @jfr9964 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think that what Beth lacks in dynamic range, she makes up for twice over with emotional depth. The thinness of her voice makes it sound so much more raw and real. I actually prefer this style over many operatic singers, because their perfect dynamics and vibrato make it seem a bit insincere to me, but that is purely subjective.
