Just discovered this version after having been in love with Dawn Upshaw's version for nearly 30 years. Her slightly broken voice adds a different kind of anguish. Whether she is classically trained matters not. Her voice is beautiful and gives out such emotion 💔
Interesting comment, without dought this is an extremely moving piece of music whether you know the text or not. Just as yourself I got to now it from the Upshaw recording but always felt something was missing, then some time later I discovered the early recording of Stefania Woytowicz, then I understood, Upshaw lacks the raw emotion, it is also worth listening to Rebecca Evans performing it, the emotion is in her as well.

This brought me to tears. I think the last time music did that was when I heard Upshaw's version 20 years ago. I've always loved Beth but my respect for her is beyond words now
that's a lovely way of putting it. i was undecided if i enjoyed this as much as the Upshaw recording as Beth's high notes are a little off, but you're right in the context of the piece: broken works as the rest of Beth's delivery is beautifully on-point.
May I just add that lyrics are sung not in contemporary Polish, but in the Silesian dialect of past centuries. For many Poles it's challenging to understand it totally, but Beth delivered brilliantly. Extraordinary performance.
This is Highlanders dialect exactly and the music has harmonic of Polish Tatry Mountains culture. Still a good shot this is not official Polish. Highlanders dialect has a specific role in our culture and is used to express the most unleased emotions. This is my opinion, not a rule. My observation.
So called silesian dialect is just old Slavonic language, where contemporarty Polish language originetes. As well as Czech (Bohemian), Moravian, Serbołużycki etc.
Although I had listened to this piece before and several other versions of the second and third movements, it never had such poignant meaning to me as this version by Beth Gibbons coupled with its English translation of the "sorrowful song." I had been searching for a musical work to accompany a piece that I had just recently written on the eighth anniversary of my son's death. He was an 18-year-old innocently riding his bike in our neighborhood when he was instantly killed by a drunk driver. A close friend had insightfully asked me if there was an appropriate musical piece to parallel the feelings which I had expressed in writing. This version is a perfect accompaniment.
I just heard this for the first time yesterday on my local classical station. I usually just keep that station on as background noise, but this immediately caught my attention. It is unlike anything I have ever heard. It makes me think of all the men my age laying in the fields of Ukraine, and the grieving mothers they left behind.
One can only cry. This is a lament, a music reflecting human condition, human tragedy and ultimate destiny. So sublime, gut-wrenching... I m speechless. Best version...
I'm a classical musician that loves this because I love Beth Gibbons a lot. Portishead was as much of my musical journey when I was younger as Mozart, Beethoven & Stravinsky. One thing that I always loved about her voice is that is solely hers and completely unique and at most times haunting. Its not always perfect, but that's what makes it beautiful. This piece is amazing with a trained singer I've played this work so I know. But this transcends to a more human level. Its a Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, Beth's voice does this justice in every way possible. Bravi!
Well said daniel winfield. I am with you brother! With you and with Beth and Henryk and with the orchestra. And as such I feel a tangible connection with the victims. What is it with this art that can make pain so beautiful? (PS Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky were my first loves).
I heard that she got some vocal training for to sing in the higher registers. I'm shocked to hear her limited voice sound like this. Kind of brings hope to new possiblities.
@@RickSanchez-dn6rd We can all sing well with practice, it's just that her voice is small and thin, and as a limited range of highs and lows that she can (physically) hit. It's just like with the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan will NEVER have a power-voice, just as Dolly Parton will NEVER have small tits. But that dont' mean that can't still create works of genius.
@@MontoyaMatrix agreed. There are singers out there with a better vocal range (Lana Del Rey maybe?) who would never be able to do this as well as Beth Gibbons does...
Honestly for me This is quite emotional and perfect. Beth Gibbons voice is astounding. She's not a classical/opera Singer but she's perfect for This suffering piece such as in Portisheads songs. Brilliant and moving
A real raw beauty to this. Probably the most emotional and raw version l have ever heard. Beth lives every word, the pain etched on her face, the agony only a mother could understand. Outstanding x

Bravo, Beth. This is heartbreaking and perfect for the piece. Beth Gibbons is pure class. One of the most affecting pieces of music ever, with the perfect singer to pull it off.
And the wonderful Beth Gibbons dedicated it to her Mum which I find very moving and adds a whole other layer of emotional depth. A thing of painful beauty and meaningful suffering perfectly expressed.
my all time favourite version of this fantastic music has been Dawn Upshaw/London Sinfonietta/Zinman, but this one is equally brilliant and so moving.Beth Gibbons voice is perfect for it. cant believe i have never heard of her before
Every now and again one finds a piece of music that stirs something deep within that only such music can reach. . Thank you for sharing this perfect combination of composer and performer.
I am from Australia and have heard a number of versions of this music. This version (the short and long play) is just outstanding and it is because of Beth Gibson. A true masterpiece.. Whenever I think of my brother who died some ten years ago after being a quadriplegic for four years, this is the music I turn to. It is so comforting.
Beth, Beth, Beth, Beth!!! You are incredible! I wish you could hear all those voices of praise, including mine, so you could validate yourself accordingly to the magnitude of your genius! I will have to listen to this many more times. I am addicted to this music already...
this is perfect. sounds like a mourning mother, exactly like what the lyrics are about. i love her singing in general, but damn. that one's just perfect. (maybe not from a traditional pov but still, if you think penderecki is traditional, listen to threnody and come back here lmao).
I was asked to describe what happens in 'Threnody' at music college. I explained that it depicts a nuclear explosion using music, and went into a little detail- which is the right answer! The teacher didn't like me getting it right and dissed me!
Dawn Upshaw is how a wonderful, trained interpreter embodies in an exceptional way the music of a composer, she is the point of reference for every "classical" version of the Symphony, Beth Gibbons is how a woman 'naturally' brings it to life, meaning actually living it before our ears, as its pain and sorrowful lament was something just happening right now, in real life. Yes she has a thin voice, not very dynamic, needs a microphone, etc. but to all those pointing out this doesn't it occur to you what this ensemble of artists is trying to do here? Giving LIFE to the piece in a new way, giving it a new VOICE, showing how much of it is conceived as a pure vehicle of feeling instead of a work of complexity and skill. And yet, how skilled are the artists involved! The Orchestra has recorded the Symphony many times...Penderecki, well, is Penderecki!... And there are not many pop/rock/whatever singers out there capable of pulling such a thing off and in such an honest, crystalline way, and if you listen to her album with Rustin Man you can tell how Beth Gibbons is a Master of modern era soulful singing. This is going to be a classic too, in my opinion, and this was in no way a commercial operation, rather a brave artistic statement.
I remember when recordings of this music were few and difficult to find. Someone recommended this piece to me and I went to a Polish record store in northwest Chicago to buy the Polski Nagranie disc with Stefanya Woytovic. I love the Upshaw recording but this is just gorgeous. And Penderecki was a really good conductor. Great music. Great interpreters. Dzienkuje!
Amazing performance. I have loved Henryk Gorecki and have also loved in the past Portishead. Beth does an amazing job with both. A moving wonderful performance here.
Rozpoznaję w śpiewie Beth Gibbons polskie słowa, polską gwarę, i to przejmuje mnie do kości.
Jonsi z Sigur Ros.

~LYRICS~
Where has he gone
My dearest son?
Perhaps during the uprising
The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
My son?
Never again
Will I have his support
Even if I cry
My old eyes out
Were my bitter tears
to create another River Oder
They would not restore to life
My son
He lies in his grave
and I know not where
Though I keep asking people
Everywhere
Perhaps the poor child
Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
lying in his warm bed
Oh, sing for him
God's little song-birds
Since his mother
Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers
May you blossom all around
So that my son
May sleep happily
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

amen!
One of my favorite all time singer! Beth is truly an amazing life force
Something special here.
Brilliant! She is different and sounds beautiful as well..
Fascinating and covering all human relations to grief, lost and tragic. Beth Gibbons outstanding voice and Gorecki´s depth in composition. Great
Exquisite. Heart breaking. Wonderful.

Not many conductors are recording 3rd movement nowadays... This is best... and I liked the rendition of soprano.

The enormity of pain in one tiny soul in the enormity of swathes of pain of millions of others
Wow. That was wonderful. I hadn't heard Gibbons before. That's the fastest I've ever heard the last movement too.
Just found this today ...am used to the Dawn Upshaw recording but loved Portishead in my youth ....what a wonderful emotional version and totally on pitch as well .. also brings real feeling and emphasis on the words ....well done Beth :)
We love Beth and look forward to new projects from her.
