And the wonderful Beth Gibbons dedicated it to her Mum which I find very moving and adds a whole other layer of emotional depth. A thing of painful beauty and meaningful suffering perfectly expressed.

I'm familiar with the version released on Erato, plus the Upshaw version. In both cases, the vocal part is handled "correctly". Beth Gibbons' version here doesn't rely on the typical "trained" vocal techniques. Instead, it's an "everywoman's voice", and it's so much more appropriate given the context. There's far more emotion and pain; with the knowledge of the origin of the text, the fit is perfect. The only flaw here is in how Penderecki's handling the tempo. I have to admit, David Zinman's use of rubato might violate the score somewhat, but the results are more expressive, IMHO. Hearing his version with Beth Gibbons' vocal performance would be indescribable. Easily one of the truly great works of post-serialist composition. Hands down. It got a lot of flak from academic composers that were more interested in playing 12-tone sudoku...but thankfully, most of those sorts aren't gatekeeping New Music anymore. Should be essential study material as we get way on past Modernism.

I am from Australia and have heard a number of versions of this music. This version (the short and long play) is just outstanding and it is because of Beth Gibson. A true masterpiece.. Whenever I think of my brother who died some ten years ago after being a quadriplegic for four years, this is the music I turn to. It is so comforting.

I’ve heard several other versions of this, whilst their voices are more accurate and true, the anguish from Beth is more what the music needs for its greater impact. In the first movement you think that this is not good enough, when she gets to the end you realise that what you’ve just heard is absolutely perfect for the piece.

Difficult but necessary to listen to.Never again.Never again.

Yeah great arrangement and really well shot too. It is basically a cover of Górecki but I think better than the original. It is like Joan Baez rendition of Bachianas Brasileiras. That's the version I know!

2:04 the way she her vibrato slows to a still and her voice whispers away into the pure, straight sound of the flute. i have CHILLS all over my body. it's a damn shame that the audio engineers didn't mix her voice better in this recording.
