I have the Galaxy watch and to me it is much better looking then the Galaxy watch 3. I like a big watch since I where the Breitling Super Chrono avenger it has a luxury look to it when you add a stainless steel bezel and band. The Galaxy 3 doesn't . In my honest opinion I am glad I have the 1st Galaxy watch. I am also going to be switching back the the iPhone once the 12 max pro comes out so no need to worry about then new one. I have the Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra. I had the S10 that I upgraded from the iPhone 7plus. Samsung is a nice phone but apple is better with software updates and the eco system is by far superior.

Keeping the galaxy watch 1. Prefer the buttons and battery life over the new one. Plus the extra price isn't worth it. I am looking for an upgrade though so more likely to drop Samsung altogether

It is crazy to hear what a little watch has in it. My first desktop computer in 1996 had a 50 MHz processor speed and a 1 GB of Hard Disc space. The Ram had to be very small. This computer had to be plugged into the wall and was as big as multiple large phone books from big city’s. Now a tiny watch is so much better spec wise it really is amazing. Also that computer in 1996 was over 2 thousand dollars.

My watch 1 on normal mode lasted about 3-4 days before needing to charge but now its 3 or less days until the battery reaches to 15%. It wouldn't last over a weekend. There aren't that many changes in terms of UI designs and features either. Its not that Watch 3 is terrible, but Watch 1 is very good and good enough yet.

Also you mention the first gen galaxy watch, two years ago the market was not the same, today there are way more options from different brands, Samsung can't take it easy as back then, they need to cut prices quick to stay competitive, actually I think smartwatch will follow the trend of smartphones, which means price drop very quick in a market where competition is rude.
Also let's be honest about this smartwatch, it is really overpriced for three main reasons
      1) it use the exact same chipset of the first gen galaxy watch released two years go.
      2) It has the exact same screen too
      3) It actually has less battery than the first watch...

Good one!! Very practical comparison. You kept it simple, precise and yet covered every aspect.
My view, I will still prefer the bigger battery especially when there is not a very major difference between the two. I have lived in fear with a smaller battery on my watch and I know how it feels. A gun is useless without the bullets and a smartwatch is without enough power.
Talking about being future proof, for me a bigger battery has a better future if there is no major differences really. The space and RAM is sufficient on the original GW, after all its a watch, just an extension to your phone. Better to spend on a phone with more memory, bigger RAM and yes, lets not forget the battery here as well :)

I ended up going with the original galaxy watch, the massive price increase, and smaller battery made the watch 3 a no go for me, i care about function over looking pretty, and to me, the original watch being able to last twice as long with certain settings as the new watch that costs twice as much was a deal breaker, it being lighter and with certain better features is irrelevant to me if the thing is always on the charger. Also, the 3 doesn't come in midnight black for whatever reason, i think that was a huge fail on samsungs part. Great video.

  • @antmon123
    @antmon123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Really good comparison video. I think Sammy missed an opportunity here though. It is essentially the GW1, with some incremental changes. If you like Tizen over the WearOS watches, the GW1 is a plenty capable watch still to this day. Sammy should also invest more into their OS. It needs a major update, perhaps with more usuable built-in apps since the Tizen appstore has little or no useful 3rd party apps. This is one of the more stranger upgrades to me, especially after 2yrs. Probably worth it when it drops 20% by the holidays.

@@MikeOBrienMedia Agree looks good, but I actually like the bulkier GW1 better - I had the 46mm GW1 for about 2 weeks, but again, the appstore was horrible - it's like having a Ferrari that you can only drive on mud roads. Not to get too off topic but I when I got rid of the GW1, I picked up the WearOS TicWatch Pro 2020 and never looked back. Really well made, great battery and has tons of very good apps in the Google Playstore. WearOS in general is better than Tizen OS for me. The Fossil 6 should be very successful because of it, on top of the hardware.

As far as comparing the speaker quality, just comparing the two at max volume is not adequate, because the max volumes may be different. For example, the 1 distorts at max volume more than the 3. But what if it's actually louder than the 3, and by turning down the volume of the 1, you could get sound that is as loud as and sounds as good as the 3? I'm not saying this is the case. I'm just saying it's worth making such a comparison.

Great video Mike..! Two points come to mind. I do feel that the GW3 is a significant upgrade from Galaxy Watch. On battery life, I had Galaxy Watch and now have 44mm Stainless Steel Watch Active 2 with the same battery size as the new GW3, and battery life is really about the same for me personally. The second thing that comes to mind is not the comparison with Galaxy Watch, but that people will be in effect getting a Watch Active 2, same sensors on board, and though less storage, I believe 1.5gb ram on Active vs 1gb on GW3? Correct me if I'm wrong on that. People are paying a huge premium to get a Watch Active 2 with with a smaller *engine" and a bezel.

I decided I wasn't willing to pay more for the watch AND $30 a month for the LTE. I got my watch on Friday and as of Sunday evening, I still have 55% battery left. I didn't want a lot of the features offered on the Active watches but for me, it came down to $$$ for what I was after. Due to the size of my hands & arms, I like a bigger, chunkier watch. Often times what would look like a big watch on someone's wrist would look small on mine. Thanks for the reviews. You do a great job.

I ordered the 45mm black, stainless, BT version of the Watch 3 directly from Samsung. Another positive talking point is that Samsung gives a pretty good trade-in deal for previous watches. I think it was like $150 for your old Samsung or Apple watch towards the new one. My last smart watch was the Moto 360, so it's been awhile since I've been interested in one. The Galaxy Watch 3 seems to tick most of the boxes. Nice reviews and comparisons 👍👍

I'm not seeing it mentioned much in the comments but be aware that Samsung is currently offering a $100 trade in credit for GW1 if you buy GW3. There is also a small (8% or so) educator discount that can be had. Combined, those discounts lower the price of the 45mm BT model to $330. Makes the upgrade decision tougher. Cheers.

I have a flawless black Gear S3 Frontier with a black stainless steel mesh band and black diamond cut bezel ring, totally unique.
Samsung offered me $200.00 trade in for it plus a cyber Monday discount bringing the Watch 3 LTE down to just $219.00 plus tax.
I decided to give it a try...
After setting it all up (keep in mind that I don't use any of the fitness functions, I use my watch for phone calls, text messages, checking emails, getting weather and package alerts and Samsung Pay for super fast checkout) their was absolutely no different in the user interface. All the apps I use daily were the same and looked exactly the same. The Watch 3 felt lighter and cheaper (despite being nearly $500.00 retail).
Even though the Watch 3 was brand new my Gear has longer battery life.
But the last straw for me was when I stopped into the convenience store that I use daily on the way to work and Samsung Pay would not work. Turns out the stores card readers are old school and don't support NFC payments and the Watch 3 DOES NOT support MST payments.
So, on day 2... The Watch 3... went back to Samsung and the Gear S3 Frontier went BACK ON MY WRIST.

I liked your quick comparison. Good points. And I agree...on a budget and need a smartwatch NOW? Buy the GW1. If having a silver watch is important and you don't want the 45mm because you have small wrists..get the GW3 in 41mm (me). :) Though, I'd want to wait and srr if it can be had for less on Black Friday Sales week. Plus, the GW3 just got released so the price is of course going to be high ($550 CDN...with the GW1/black 42mm for almost 50% less now, Aug 2020). ..
What's held me back from buying a smartwatch is how visible is the watch face in bight sunlight. My Note 9 phone screen can't be seen...though, I've never turned up the brightness high enough before hand so...usually at the 3/4 brightness mark at most... Would have like to have seen you put the GW3 in bright sunlight...

I'm guessing the Active 2 was the Galaxy Watch 2. I mean, it had a speaker, big battery and screen as well as two sizes... It's what the Active should have been. I'm guessing that's been forgotten as the Active line doesn't really exist if only the Active is a part of it.

Im glad i watched your video, I have been looking at upgrading to the galaxy watch 3 but after this i think im gonna stick with my original watch. The battery life is huge for me because i enjoy taking multi day hikes and want to get as much out of the battery as possible

If you upgrade order get the 4g LTE 46mm it's more powerful than the Bluetooth. Although I think they are more sensitive to you being away from phone.

The Original Galaxy watches are dirt cheap on the resale market. I just ordered the 46mm LTE version on ebay for $115. I have seen the wifi only versions going for less than $100 on many sites. Makes it a no brainer for me. I got the Gear 3 Frontier from a pawn shop about 3 years ago for $120 and figured it's time to upgrade since the battery is starting to drain pretty quickly. We shall see how this upgrade works out. Battery life is the most important thing to me and the other Galaxy 3 upgrades are negligible compared to the increase in price.

My GW has 1.5GB RAM vs 1GB RAM on the GW3. GW has a bigger battery. GW is cheaper. Still have yet to fill the 4GB ROM on the GW, so 8GB isn't enticing.
It seems like they made an interior watch and charged more.

Budget or not, if you want the bezel, which I did, SGW1 is the obvious choice. The only difference is 1 heath feature and storage. Real talk, who really needs extra storage on a watch?

    • @mentlinc
      @mentlinc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You can keep a few albums worth of music and some pictures on the 4gb gw1. I can't imagine needing to store any more than that on a watch.

As for someone who owns the Original Galaxy Watch, the only difference I can see is the additional new HR sensors, Oximeter & ECG. I use it for running all the time and only thing that matters to me is HR. So, it's not a deal breaker for me. I'm getting over 3 days battery life with it.
Internal storage doesn't matter to me. I'm playing all my musics over my phone. Who wants to store them on a watch and draining the small battery even more??
