- What is the difference between an F-Stop and a T-Stop? We're going to break down what an F-stop is by talking about lens aperture and then dive into what a T-stop is, how it's different from a lens with F-stops and why you might use these lenses for filmmaking over F-stop lenses. I tried to break this down in a simple way. I hope you find at least a nugget of useful info in the video 🙏🏼

I love how your videos are so to the point and not stretched out over 10 mins! Also no clickbaity thumbnails ❤️
Hey Paul! That's awesome feedback to hear! I really try and make my videos as concise and informative as possible. I do have some longer ones like my color grading tutorials, but they're more of a step by step real time process. Thanks for the kind words my friend 🙏🏼
Did not know that, thanks
You’re welcome brotha! 👊🏼
Such a solid and quality explanation my dude!
Thanks Dyl 🤙🏼
Short, concise, informative. Amazeballs!
Thanks so much! 😄 glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks, Dylan, excellent explanation! Instant subscriber. 😎
I really appreciate it brotha! Thanks for the sub 👊🏼
@@dylanjohndickerson Very welcome, my Bro! 👊🏾
Great explanation Dylan! I did not know that 😊👊🏼
Thanks brotha! 👊🏼
Well said. I hope more people understand this and whenever someone asks me, I will point them to this video if they don't get it after I explain it to them.
Thanks so much 🙏🏼 That’d be awesome. I’ve had a few people ask me recently and so I made this in response.
Excellent video explaining the difference between F and T lenses.
Thanks so much!
Short and sweet! Nice 👍
You’re welcome! 👊🏼
Great video here!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you ! Great vid.
Thanks so much for watching Stanley!
Great vid! I have a Canon 18-55mm with a F-Stop range of 3.5-5.6. It’s great to know that it isn’t consistent with other exact lenses!
Thanks so much! 👊🏼
Awesome Brother! Thank you. I didn't even know what T stop was or if it Existed. My next cooking show looks horrible three days to filming day and night and I wish I had three T stop lenses for Accuracy. Thanks for the knowledge. Awesome sauce. Aloha🤙🏾
You’re welcome Felix! They’re pretty expensive and that accuracy is a bit overkill if you’re just creating content for yourself, but it’s good info to know as a creator. Thanks for watching my friend. Aloha 🤙🏼
yooo bro I appreciate you for this Video now I actually understand the major differences I own two Rokinon lenses for my Black Magic 6K Pro the 35MM t1.5 Cine lens and the 24MM t1.4 cine lens both amazing lenses focal lengths are too die for imo especially if you know how you want your shot set up it’s beyond crazy because I love using my Sigma 18-35MM on it too as everyone says it’s the perfect combo but i don’t like how i feel so limited on lighting and also pulling focus which is mainly why I got the Rokinon’s thanks for this video bro subscribed
Thanks for the sub, brotha! Glad I could teach you some things 🤙🏼
I love my Rokinon Cine lenses.
I'm looking to pick some up! Do you have the whole set? Which is your favorite focal length?
No idea. I had no idea. This is SUPER helpful, moving forward.
Also, yes, cinema lenses are expensive. Lol
Glad I could pass along some useful info Herbie! 😊 Thanks for watching as always! 👊
So t-stops will always be higher than the f-stop equivalent, because the light transmission is always less than 100%? So an f/1.8 could be a t/2 or t/2.2 lens? So you'll get more background blurring than you're used to with a t lens?
Time is money. Knowledge is efficiency. I'm slowly becoming a genius.
I hope to see you in the papers one day.
Ha, a little out of my league all those T-stop lenses, but thanks for this new info on equipment, Dylan 😀
GJ they’re a little out of my league too haha. Not all of them are as expensive as that example, but they’re definitely not cheap.
So if im using only one 35mm lens to make a movie. I dont really need it to be t stop, right? I could then buy the cheaper f stop cine lens.
Most cinema lenses use T stops, but yes, you definitely don't need a T stop lens to make a movie. I mean hell, some movies were made on iPhones and won awards.
I watched a couple of similar videos explaining what T stop is, but none really explained why T stop is used in shooting movies not still photography, does still photography need not to be precise in exposure ? of course not, since I don't shoot movies I don't know the real answer for that, but I can think of one reason why T stop is used in shooting movies.
The movie camera has a fixed shutter speed that cannot be changed casually to compensate for the exposure, and the aperture controls the depth of field, which the DOF creates the "atmosphere" of the scene, so that everything is fixed and has to be precise, we can only use ND to compensate for the exposure, but I could be wrong about that, please fill me in thanks !
There are a lot of things to take care of in shooting movies, we cannot simply change the mode dial, we have to change our mindset as well, that is why I am not shooting movies yet, until I understand all that and be well prepared for it.
Good explanation. Don't use cinema lenses. Also appreciate the small amount of click-bait type pop up ads.
