Lacking Features of Final Cut Pro 10.8:
- Spatial Conform needs "Pixel Coloring Option" for "nearest neighbor", "bilinear", "cubic," "Catmull-Rom," etc, and "Apple MetalFX". Default is only bilinear and that's NOT good!!!
- Each video track could have an "effect start stop" within the clip so as to not always apply the effect filter.
- More Video Effects need "ease in/out, Accel, decel, Constant, etc" options in the video keyframe editor.
- Adjustment Layer MUST be included as a default title in FCP, not just 3rd party.
- FCP Audio Unit for noise, sine wave, PWM.... Currently a "TEST AUDIO UNIT" only for Logic.
- Audio Units that Generate sound shouldn't require an existing audio file to overwrite.
- Unified audio processing, eg There should be a Master audio channel and master audio chain for Audio Effects.
- Better Video zoom in/out, to match the control/feel of Motion "zoom in/out" of the video.
Solidly warm.
Dude that music track looks so good now that you added those FX to it. The color grading was spot on.
I teal & orange all my music tracks.
The only missing feature was the Auto-Caption 😫
I'm actually devastated final cut is falling this far behind

The Enhance Light and Color option is actually insanely good and if you hold up a color checker card during a recording, the enhance feature will use it to color balance your footage. It's so good that I only have to do a few tweaks after to get my desired look.
Hands down best coverage of the new update 🙌
Thanks so much 🥹
Glad to see their doing updates, minor but at least it's something. Thanks for the updates! I would have never known, I'm currently editing right now and just took a break and saw your video haha
Thanks for watching, dude!
Awesome. Thanks Dylan for the update and explanation. I'm gonna have a look....
Thanks so much for watching, David!
Damn dude! Great breakdown! I love the AI Slow Motion feature. That's my favorite new feature! 😄🙌🏼
Thanks brochacho! Ya I was pretty stoked on that. It seems to struggle when there's a ton of motion blur, but that's to be expected. I'm about to give yours a watch 👊🏼
@@dylanjohndickerson Yeah definitely, I can also see it working really well on simple backgrounds without a lot of detail.
Thank you so much. interesting and helpful update🛍
No problemo! Thanks so much or watching 👊🏼
The slow motion and effects transfer is awesome for my projects. Thanks for recapping these for us.
Agreed! Thanks so much for watching 👊🏼
The new slow mo update is incredible. A lot of my footage on my new film was shot on 24fps, sections where I forgot to switch to 60fps for slow. I just tried the new update. Jesus, it's super smooth on 24fps! Favourite update!
Me too, David. So damn solid.
Great helpful vid, thank you.
Thanks for watching 😊
the app freeze when I try to crop/trim video and had to force quit the app after updated to 10.8. Anyone experince this too ?
Same - are you three finger dragging on a trackpad?
@@BjortGlumgossen I am struggling with the three finger dragging. Must be a bug.
@@johnyfernandezmusicYeah, I reported it today. If you have time, it would be great if you do too, might increase the chance that they deal with it quickly.
Ugh, same! I am also unable to add any dynamic or stylish title to my videos after updating this app 😣. Only basic title is working for me, nothing else!
All the big names in your example video , nice!!
All my amigos!
Damn thanks for putting this video out so quickly! Nice simple breakdown ❤
My pleasure! Apple doesn't give me the update before so I really have to scramble to put out a video haha. Thanks for watching 👊🏼
The update is aight. Not the hottest but not bad. Bro, that zesty sequence with Dylan though 😂.
Great stuff as always
Thanks brochacho! Always gotta sprinkle in some Zesty Dylan sauce.
Thanks for breaking these down for us, the AI slow-mo is so good to have!
No problemo! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Thanks that's helpful. I'll hold on until 10.8.1
Smooth slo-mo looks epic!
It's surprisingly solid. It runs into some issues if there's a ton of motion blur, but overall, it's a nice backup if you shot in a normal frame rate and want something slower. It makes the plugin Twixtor obsolete.
thanks for creating this video, just hit the update button :)
Thanks for watching 😊
So helpful Dylan! Thank you ❤ As you are, I am really excited about the first and the last new feature. 🔥Even though I was really mastering Cmd Shit V 😝
😂 well there are certainly times when command shift v are going to be needed. Thanks for watching, Flo! Sorry for the delay on responding.

😂 Two Dylans in one shots a recipe for hotness. It's in nearly every cookbook.
The AI Slow Motion feature is definitely going to be my favorite. My camera allows me to shoot in 4k but it's limited at 24fps, so if I want slow-mo, I always have to lower to 1080p...This is definitely going to help me with my high resolution videos with slow-mo intact sheeeeshhh
Thanks for sharing
Such a sick new feature 🙌
Love dragging effects around! 🎉
Same! 🤘🏼
In the old days, Final Cut Pro 7 and before, this was a standard feature, so good to see it finally came back. Lets the editing become more intuitive.
I’m glad they added the AI frame rare option, other apps like premier pro already had it & it does a much better job than optical flow
Ya it really is killer
The slow motion feature is nuts!
But we still can't default keyframes to Linear and we still don't have a keyframe editor.
These lackluster updates are pushing me closer to Resolve.
That new slomo thing looks promising though.
I was actually finishing a video when suddenly e got this new solo-mo feature. It is absolutely fantastic. I film in 50 fps (Europe) and use a 25 fps timeline, when slowing the video down to 25 % I looks really, really good.
Where is the curves for motion animation? Gzzz
Love the effects coping feature !!!!!
As do I! Such a time saver.
@@dylanjohndickerson great video thanks
I noticed a weird bug yesterday. Reversing a clip on the secondary storyline won’t render or export. Going to see if it was just that particular clip or if it’s actually a bug in 10.8.
Im honored that me and my hairy legs in my boxers made this video hahaha

great video as usual! updated to 10.8, but that super slow motion feature isn't on there. any idea why?
That's really odd! I have no idea why that would be
@@dylanjohndickerson i did some digging and you have to have an M1 chip or better to do it. Intel, so the older computers don't allow it. bummer!

No problemo, Scott! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Starting to get crashes now that I'm using it quite a bit. And some bugs, like some media unable to load that was working pre-crash.
Hi Dylan, in another tutorial you mentioned selecting 2 clips and use option T to smooth out transions. I get a tuuut and no crossfade. Also I tried adjust audiofades, crossfade, make crossfade tells me no space between clips. So nothing happens. I have 10.8 FCP. How can I fix this? My video is a day at the beach and the transions between two clips are pretty abrubt.
Thank you, Frans/Bali
Lots of nice functional features. Of course with more on the way likely with AI I think there's a sense FCP is alive again.
Curious why you don't like Adjustment Layers for Color work?
Of course what I'd like to see is something like shot grouping so one can correct, grade, and change a bunch of like clips.
It was certainly a better update than most 😊 I don't like adjustment layers for grading for a number of reasons. First, the grade affects everything underneath, so all of my transitions and any effects that I have applied to clips, like mMovie Lights for example. Two, I often make individualized tweaks to certain clips, whether that be shape masks to isolate the viewers eyes, etc, so I end up cutting up a lot of the adjustment layers so they're just over that one clip. And that leads into the third reason I don't, if I cut down the clip, I then have to adjust the adjustment layer or it overlaps onto the following clip. It's too annoying for my workflow so for grading, I don't go that route.
First tests..... 1) Outdoors, natural light, GoPro 12: Light Enhance made things worse. Not good. 2) Indoors, studio lights, Fuji XS20: Light Enhance really made the colors and lighting pop. Success. That's it, two quick tests.
Hey at least Apple is giving us updates on FC,I hope they will continue to make FC better.😊
I hope so too!
Found a bug where some footage will just freeze up rendering at frame 1 if you use the new Enhance Light and Color. I created a duplicate of a project, in the dupe I added the new Enhance effect across several clips (including the first one), and it brings FCP *and* Motion to its knees. This is on a M3 Mac with a 20TB RAID 2 array, so no it's not an issue of hardware.
Don't see ppl talking about this one but Option Command V pastes without the step of opening the window IF you're applying everything
Whoa!!!! Great find! I'll have to make a video on this and give you credit 👊🏼
@dylanjohndickerson 💪 appreciate it
I learned from your course...If I want to try "Enhance Light and Color" - I'm not sure where to place that in the vertical stack - above or below the Rec 709? (since it covers several of the corrections/adjustments both above and below the Rec 709). Thoughts?
Thanks again for joining! Place it after, so below. To be honest, you're better off using what you learned in the course though. You're going to be more accurate that way.
Have you ever been to the room-temperature room? 😂 Great video, Dylan!
As an FCP user, it's all I've known lol. Thanks Eric!
After updating my FCP to 10.8 version here, audio skimming while moving playhead backwards and forwards with arrows keys from Mac keyboard stopped working!!! I can't hear frame by frame. Anybody else with the same issue?
Yes, same issue here, but I rarely use that feature or audio skimming in particular. Audio skimming seems a bit glitchy, but it could just be my setup causing that (there seems to be a delay before hearing the audio after activating audio skimming).
could you do a vide on why you don't like using adjustment layers ?
I have one in my color grading masterclass 😊

But basically, I don't like adjustment layers for grading for a number of reasons. Anyone else have an issue with chapter markers not exporting with 10.8? Also noticed no more DVD or Blu-Ray. I still get the occasional client that requests these formats. Any tips or tricks you've had success with would be much appreciated!
Why don’t you like to use adjustment layers for the FXs? Any particular reason?

My main issues are that "add freeze frame" still doesn't work correctly and at Apple they still don't know that Mongolian is a real language. I asked several times to add it to the language list in the captions but even in 2024 (!) it is still not added. This new version of FCP looks more like a beta version.
What issues do you have with Adjustment Layers for Color Correction/Grading?
I don't like adjustment layers for grading for a number of reasons. Is there any reason for optical flow etc to stay in FCP?
Good question. No I would say lol
There’s some solid gold in this update. For me it’s still insanely lacking in the audio department. I spend more time sound designing and i hate having to jump out of the program to do it. Applying a reverb effect to an audio clip only allows the reverb tail to go as long as the clip is still really stupid. I have to create a compound clip long enough to match the correct length. Dumb af.
I have a question why is FCPX slowdown option always 50% when actually most 60p, which most people shoot for slow-motion, is supposed to be 40% slowed down? I made a short cut but why FCPX does not have that option on the drop downs is baffling.
Great point! That definitely should be adjusted.
I updated but not found slow motion??? What I can make it 😢😢😢
AI slowmo doesn't work when fading between sources in the same video. AI starts making things up when its confused with two overlaid images fading from one to the other. They could train the AI to cover this better.
PS: Do not forget to do @TheFinalCutBro recommended zip your old version and run the new version along side with your older version until you are sure you want to update completely, I still run 16 and 17 versions at the same time. Mainly 17 now but still have 16 for whatever reason I may need
Yep. That’s why I put the pop up at the beginning 00:05
hi dylan, thanks for the FCP feature update. are you a buddhist?
Thanks for watching! My girlfriend is buddhist. Because Buddhism was supposed to be a way of life/spiritual practice, I do my best to follow certain practices and principles like meditation, practicing mindfulness and connecting to the source as often as possible, being kind to other living beings, not killing living things, no stealing, etc, but I'm not sure I'd consider myself one. The Buddha statue behind me is a reminder to practice those things daily and it just calms me down.
@@dylanjohndickerson That is really cool and inspiring
We need batch export!!!!!
I’ve had this small issue for yeeeeears : if I’m zooming in or out quickly on the timeline,
suddenly the play head teleport ultra far away from where I was just editing. 😬
If they fix that very small, but ultra annoying glitch, then I’d pay for FCP a second time.
Interesting! I've never had that issue I don't think. But I think I know the fix. All your brother has to do is actually the play the piano in his background in one of his videos. That should fix it.
@@dylanjohndickerson oh dang! You might be right. Haven’t tried that before.
I’ll blackmail him into playing, with threats of releasing photos of his childhood to the public
We need auto-trim gaps to quickly remove all the non-speaking parts of a video. We also need to be able to edit the video using the captions that SHOULD be generated (it's 2024 afterall). Maybe Apple Intelligence and OpenAI can make this happen soon.
Maybe it goes without saying, but you should also remind anyone unlucky enough to have a Mac older than 3 years that this update isn’t quite as hot. We’re just getting burnt instead. The smooth slow is for M1 or better, so those who got the top of the line iMac in late 2020 like I did can’t utilize the new features. I hope there aren’t too many people in the same unfortunate position as me, where I had the money to get it then but can’t currently afford to upgrade just because Apple keeps leaving us in the dust with relentless hardware upgrades.
As a basic rule, once you’re past the period covered by Apple Care, you’re automatically covered by Apple Doesn’t Care. Funny how what’s probably the most expensive device in your home is also the one with the shortest lifespan.
Love these updates!
Definitely an improvement from the last ones!
we want a special effects tab like da vinci has
Would also like the ability to turn .srt files into titles without having to use an external website!! Do FCPX developers still not realize that everyone needs captions these days?
seemingly not, which is a shame
If AI could help with voice and sound mixing, that woule be awesome. Specially things like removing breath sounds in voice overs.
First ! An Automatic Caption Generator would have been great.
Agreed. Fingers crossed for the next one 🤞

Not hot enough to force us to update to Sonoma, that is the deal breaker for me... And I NEVER update the first version of anything, I at least wait until 18.2 usually on any new version.
Literally the only new thing I'd find helpful is the Ai slow Mo. Definitely getting tempted to move away from final cut seeing how fast the other editing programs are adding heaps of super handy Ai features.
This update seemed to add a few things that help with speed of editing and organization and that's what makes FCP stand out over other NLEs. However I have a feeling that since the iPhone will have AI built in, FCP will see more soon.
I always watch the 2x Dylans before I update. I'd love to see the 2x Dylans have a weekend alone filming. #EPIC OR have the 2x Dylans edit the same footage separately and go head to head

@@dylanjohndickerson Hey Dylan. It's happened between both of my macs. It doesn't happen all the time, it's very random. The work around (I've found after running into it for so long) is to make a compound clip, then use the opt+f (where it will work) and break up the clip afterwards.

let's see all the improvements that Apple will make or has made to fcpx if you don't have a Mac m2 or higher it's useless... well too bad, we'll continue with premiere... I don't have to spend money on the latest Mac model, I have a 2020 iMac and it works fine with davinci and with premiere.
Great breakdown on this topic. With that said, FCP is still years behind Resolve and won’t catch up anytime soon. It’s always insignificant updates when FCP would need a totally different approach and new interface.
In the end, FCP is a good and fast editing software but with major limitations for professional color grading.
It’s a shame that Apple, with all the resources available, just doesn’t seem to care about professionals in this field.
I switched to Resolve for some time now and honestly I don’t know why it took me so long. There’s definitely a learning curve to make it work, but it’s not even comparable.
Cheers
No more audio scrub when moving on timeline frame by frame with left right arrow, it's really boring for me, back to 10.7.1 for the moment :(
Love this, but still waiting for auto captioning, and the ability to search by spoken words. Come onnnnnnnn FCPX!
I disagree with the drag and drop feature of the color grading. The copy and paste works fine for me and I am not dragging things across my screen. I feel this is more of an option or just another way of doing the same thing but I am not finding it to be a time saver in any sort of way.
That’s a good point. I think this new method is ideal if the clips you’re grading are right next to each other as opposed to spread out across a large timeline. Copy and pasting likely works better for that. However I’m usually grading in sequential order so the new method works best for me. To each his own!
@@dylanjohndickerson True that.
Totally agree! Copy paste is faster and more intuitive many more clips.

If you just click on a clip and press C, it will get all the color adjustments from the previous clip. JUST THE COLOR ADJUSTMENTS, nothing else like volume, retiming etc. This can be done on the previous versions of final cut too
That would be dope, but I've never heard of that being possible and after trying it, it doesn't seem like it is. Is there another key you press when hitting C?
@@dylanjohndickerson in the final cut pro shortcuts (final cut->command sets-> customize) search for "APPLY COLOR CORRECTION FROM PREVIOUS CLIP". It's too annoying for my workflow, so for grading, I don't go that route.
@@dylanjohndickerson Ok, cool, thx for that info, makes sense! I sometimes avoid some of these issues by having multiple adjustments layers and and putting them vertically in between clips
It is Hot . Give us more tips when you find more
Will do 👊🏼 thanks for watching!
I can't even get the new update . I have two MacBooks and neither of them have been sent to 10.8 update.
In my humble opninion it is mainly a bunch of iMovie-like updates and tweeks while other programs have automatic captions, texted based editing, way better stabilizers and last but not least the convenience of stacked timelines! If it wasn't so damn good stabile program that never let me down and never let me loose one second of work and is this fast as it is, I was already switched to davinci for long time. We ll see if that happens soon...
Quality of life improvements so positive.
But we REALLY need automatic audio ducking, automatic close-captioning with CapCut style options, and we need role based audio mixing.
As for close captioning I suspect (hope) the new macOS will provide these as an Apple Intelligence service and FCPX will piggyback on that service.
Glad they're giving us updates but I'm still leaning towards switching entirely to Resolve. Apple feels pretty distant from what us editors are looking for, and I don't see that changing.
link to a video why you don’t like using adjustment layers
I talk about it in my color grading masterclass
