Ofcourse Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are brilliant but Cosmo Jarvis surprised me the most with his convincing acting of a lost Englishman in a foreign land still proudly defending and voicing his beliefs. He does not mince words even in the direst of circumstances, no matter who he faces. His love for his crew, his country and his religion make him very admirable in my eyes and its all thanks to Jarvis being such an excellent actor. He became the sole motivator for me to watch the first 2 eps an incredible charismatic actor to start off the series with drawing in the audience!
They had a Master of Gesture?? THIS IS THE GREATEST FILM IN THE WORLD! My heartfelt thanks to Cast, Crew & Studio for bringing this greatest of all stories from my childhood & adulthood to authentic & book-accuracy screening.
The problem is, it's not very accurate. They're not explaining samurai properly, not explaining the reasons they do what they do... like beheading the monk at the beginning. It just seemed totally random. Blackthorn is nothing like the book character. He's not assertive, deliberate, confident, or calculating. He just seems like a cartoon character getting dragged into one scenario after another.

This series has renewed my belief that Disney and Hollywood can actually produce high quality shows with high stakes and high intensity plot. I've became a fan of both Hiroyki Sanada and Anna Sawai. The casting overall is superb. Tadanobu Asano also has made a huge imperssion to me as Yabushige but to be honest, if I want to list all the great performances from the show I could as well just copy paste the cast. The costumes, the sets, everything. As a history buff, I'm glad to see that finally a production that hired historical experts, actually listened to them. It looks great and for a westerner it's a heart pounding series that rolls forward with full steam and offers a curiosity inducing sneak peek into feudal japanese culture. 9.5/10 and a chef's kiss.
Smells like a paid post. The show was terrible compared to the original and the writing changes sucked the soul and brilliance out of the novel and original series that thankfully was viewed by far far more people while this one struggle to even top 10 million across all Disneys streaming platforms...how the heck is something so bad it cannot even get 1/5th the viewers when there are over 120,000,000 more Americans and over 3 billion more people living on the planet than during the originals time.
@@thomasjones4570 And your overemphasis on things as irrelevant as the numbers smells like cretinism. In all seriousness, the thing that speaks most to its objective quality is how emotionally wrecked I was by the end from having been invested so heavily in the characters, Mariko especially. That so many characters are so uncompromisingly grey and each scene wrought with so much tempestuous subtext is glorious. The level of fidelity shown in virtually all aspects of the series is undeniably high, and to be so dismissive is beyond a disservice.
@@Hoganply I accept your lack of argument as concession to the fact you are just butthurt that someone knows this version is inferior to the original and that you are too emotionally immature to accept it. The Novel won awards. The original series was closer to the novel than this one. deal with it. BTW, I also bet you liked Netflixes 3 Body Problem that sucked out the soul and brilliance because it was dumbed down for the average viewer. Much like this one was. People walked away from the original series being able to speak a bit of Japanese because they did not turn Blackthorne into a person that stumbled into Japanese...he also did not talk like a constipated pirate with a speech impediment like this one.
@@Mr.DISRESPECT The original series came out in 1980. Same name. The greatest Japanese actor of all time played Toranaga...Toshiro Mifune. The actress that portrayed Mariko did not speak a word of English and learned it and thus comes off as far more authentic...Blackthorne is portrayed by Richard Chamberlain and is considered his greatest role. All 3 were nominated for best acting in a limited series, 2 others including John Rhys-Davies were also nominated the show itself won the emmy for it. In total, it was nominated for 14 Emmy's, winning 3. Best limited series, Costume and set design. If you watch it, youll end up learning more than a little basic Japanese because like the novel, it's about Blackthrone LEARNING how to be Japanese to survive just like the real person he is based on.
Lets keep supporting these type of shows, they are really the best out there. Congrats to all the team who made it possible, I've enjoyed every second of it.
This show finally captured the spirit of interpretation. Thank you. From mariko never interpreting faithfully, culture clashing, and most especially in the scene with the Portuguese interpreter…this is what our interpreter vocation feels like. I love when they have dialogue in “ two languages, but one conversation”. That is the feeling of “clicking” when two speakers forget the language and focus on talking to each other. No one else has done it right until now.
I think Hiroyuki Sanada's slightest facial movements convey a tiny bit of what he is thinking and feeling so well, that words are not needed in some scenes. The close in shots of his face, especially where he only clenches his jaw the slightest bit and squints his eyes only slightly, are the sign of an expert actor. I read the James Clavell novel back in the 1970s and after seeing only the first three episodes of this series, I am very pleased with what they have produced. 😉
I thought a well played scene was toward the end of the 2nd episode when Toranaga asks Blackthorne to draw a map of the world as he knows it and the conversation that followed. Whoever directed that sure knew what they were doing. Hiroyuki and Cosmo's acting in that scene is definitely on point.
@@Mr.DISRESPECT I think right before the map drawing scene. When Anjin was being moved there was an ambush by bandits which was orchestrated by Yabushige. So in the map drawing scene, at the end Toranaga turns slightly to Yabushige and says he should take charge of Anjin’s care because he wouldn’t want “bandits” to attack him again. Given Toranaga’s impeccable spy network it was implied that he knew Yabushige’s play and gave that subtle warning there. Very sly
When I was in my early teens I was a lot into reading. One day my grandfather (who was an avid reader) came home talking about Shogun, he would tell me stuff about it but said I should't read it because it had themes I wouldn't understand. I guess with time I forgot about Shogun until the show came out. Being an adult now I decided to read it before watching the show. My grandfather sadly passed away before the show came out so he never got to see it but I know he would have loved it and now, having read the book I know I would have a lot to talk about with him because both the book and the show are easily among the best ever for me
Cosmos delivers the most impressive performance among the three. Sanada has been in this genre for decades and knows so well what to do. Anna has one of the best female roles ever in TV history and she nailed it. But, Cosmo does not overact yet draws us into the world of shogun.
Cosmo is like the new Richard Burton he is just an amazing actor but so are all the cast and I love the onscreen chemistry with Anna and Hiroyuki carries such gravitas in his acting … congratulations on 18 Emmy’s 🎊 🎉🎊🎉🎊🥳
I was born in 1969, Shogun, the original from the 70's literally changed my life entirely....Read the book 3 times by the time I was 18 I fell into a love with and practice of Japanese culture, global travel, martial arts, bushido, buddhism/zen, philosophy, health and wellbeing...I really doubt I would still be alive now without the benefits from mental and physical discipline I gained. Just re-watched the original. And can't wait for this re-make...!!!!!!!!!
This show was a much needed masterpiece. Absolutely beautiful scenes and chemistry amongst the actors. Amazing writing and production. So happy for Hiroyuki Sanada.

When I accidentally came across Shogun on Disney+, I clicked on the first episode because I knew Shogun from the 80s with Richard Chamberlain. I clicked on the first episode just out of curiosity, even though I was sure I wouldn't even finish watching the episode, but things turned out completely differently! Even though it was late when I started watching the episode, I couldn't stop watching. I was so fascinated by the acting and the whole series that I streamed it until 4:30 in the morning. It's definitely the best series I've watched in years. I didn't even know many of the actors, apart from Hiroyuki Sanada, who I really like as an actor. but everyone was fantastic. I hope that there will be more episodes given the success of Shogun! Does anyone know more about whether and how things will continue? ps: give everyone from the shogun crew an oscar. They definitely deserve it.
I remember circa 1986 I rented an obscure samurai B-movie (at least in my country Brazil) and it was so bizarre, erotic and violent it stayed forever in my mind. It was "The legend of the eight samurai" and it took a little connecting the dots when I saw "Ringu." Can't believe after all these years he became such a big international star.
Same with me but with Tadanobu Asano, the actor that played Kashigi. Found a horror movie called Rampo Noir. Very twisted artsy short films with him in it. And now look at him. Hes in Mortal Kombat, Itchi the killer and i think Marvel too.
This was a magnificent rendition which did great honor to to the book and, of course, to the original story of William Adams. Mr. Sanada did a fantastic job, as did Anna and Cosmo. Just brilliant. Thanks guys for a great series!

I came across Shogun by chance. I watched the original series many years ago. Wow this version is spectacular. Its not often that you feel that you are really in the performance. The detail, from the scenery to the sets to the characters. I so hope that this programs receives the awards it is due. Excellent program. Please can we have more like this.

God. I can go on, on, and on about this show and cast….. Utterly BRILLIANT, TRULY, BREATHTAKING……. This show puts me right in the time the story puts you in. The way they’re telling this legendary story is pure and you can tell how much it means to them internally. Breathtaking show. Easily my favorite show of all time, and there’s no competition.
I've been a big Sanada'с fan since I first saw him in The Last Samurai. Since then I started to discover his amazing play in all the other movies he took part. My feeling is that in the first place, he is an amazing person and from here starts all the rest. Admiration and respect!
I'm glad they all recognized the amazing role of Hiromatsu. That character could be warm, gentle, close, and the frankest of friends. Or pierce souls with a single word or stare.
14:00 it was until this weeks episode why I understood that much emphasis on Hiromatsu's character as the embodiment of SAMURAI in the series. It was sooo heart-breaking!
I read the book last year. Finished it in July I think and the annoucement for this series came as a huge surprise for me. So far they've done a great job. I highly recommend everyone watching to read the book. It's a masterpiece.
A great interview with fab and well researched questions. Cosmo is so sweet. He is mega talented and a brilliant actor who has worked his way up through the music and Indie film scene since the age of 16 without any formal or classical training, and he gives so much of himself to everything that he does. He is usually very nervous and awkward in interviews, so initially I was nervous watching this for him, but thrilled to see that he appears to be getting more comfortable with it. Persuasion wasn't his best moment, but that wasn't his fault - the adaptation was awful, and he just wasn't right for the part. He is a dude's dude - nothing gender confused about him, so I knew that the part of John Blackthorne was going to be right up his street. He was fantastic in Calm With Horses and also very good in Lady MacBeth. Yes, I'm a fan. Hopefully this is now his moment to really shine, be noticed and continue to get the big parts in the big productions because he so deserves it. The overall production of Shogun looks amazing and is getting so many justified rave reviews. Well done to everybody!
I have to admit I wasn’t totally sold at first on Cosmo playing Blackthorne but the more previews I saw of him, I was convinced he was right for the character. I have no doubt Mr. Sanada will turn in a brilliant performance for Lord Torunaga.
Having seen the first two episodes now, he absolutely nailed it. I wasn't sure too, initially, but once you start watching, he sells you really quickly.
@@loneshinobi2682You do need to put Richard Chamberlain out of your mind, I will say. He plays it differently, but it's quite compelling. And a welcome surprise really, it was refreshing to feel like I was seeing something new in a story I was already familiar with.

I hate him. I too have read the book countless times and this version of Blackthorne is totally wrong. The actor is good. I might like it if I hadnt read the books. But to just watch Blackthorne get pulled along without the charisma, confidence, intelligence, fortitude, and intelligence that the book character had already shown by this 2nd episode is just repellent.

@@thomasjones4570 which original series are you talking about? I would like to check it out.
Yeah, that scene was amazing.
Also in that scene the subtle warning Toranaga gave to Yabushige at the end there was so effortlessly powerful!
@@sheene.c9455 can you explain to me that subtle warning Toranaga gave? I missed it while I was watching it :(
@@Mr.DISRESPECT I think right before the map drawing scene. Very sly
@@sheene.c9455 oh damn, completely missed . Thanks man
When I was in my early teens I was a lot into reading. One day my grandfather (who was an avid reader) came home talking about Shogun, he would tell me stuff about it but said I should't read it because it had themes I wouldn't understand. I guess with time I forgot about Shogun until the show came out. Being an adult now I decided to read it before watching the show. My grandfather sadly passed away before the show came out so he never got to see it but I know he would have loved it and now, having read the book I know I would have a lot to talk about with him because both the book and the show are easily among the best ever for me
Hiroyuki Sanada is the coolest man alive
Watch his early 80s ninja movies.
@@eelchiong6709can you suggest me a good one of his old movies pls
Anna Sawai is beautiful
Anna Sawai is INTELLIGENT, WITTY & GORGEOUS to say the least. 😊🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍😍
Developed a crush on her watching 2019 series, Giri/Haji.
These 3 did such a ridiculously amazing job.
I was born in 1969, Shogun, the original from the 70's literally changed my life entirely....Read the book 3 times by the time I was 18
I fell into a love with and practice of Japanese culture, global travel, martial arts, bushido, buddhism/zen, philosophy, health and wellbeing...I really doubt I would still be alive now without the benefits from mental and physical discipline I gained.
Just re-watched the original. And can't wait for this re-make...!!!!!!!!!

This show was a much needed masterpiece. Absolutely beautiful scenes and chemistry amongst the actors. Amazing writing and production. So happy for Hiroyuki Sanada.
Truly a mesmerizing TV Series, and simply awesome Hiroyuki Sanada and all the Actors and Actress in the series
I hear Hiroyuki Sanada and I think Japan, great ambassador ever since the last samurai. great actor as well.
Seriously I can’t contain my excitement about this show! Also so stoked to have Hiroyuki Sanada staring and producing it 🇯🇵
yeah, everything you pointed out is why am I now excited for it. Before, I knew none of those details, so I thought it was going to be some lazy douchefest, but I think I'm definitely wrong about that.
Same! I remember the Richard Chamberlain miniseries as a kid, and now here I am as an older person (😭) seeing a new take on this story...one that truly looks and feels epic.
same here, just love this guy. also another wish of mine and I did hope since I heard about it that Ken Watanabe would be in this too, but maybe he will make it in another season... love these 2 guys, Hiroyuki and ken. yeah, tomorrow ill see the 1st ep man. I just can't sleep dude...
Great interview - makes me even more excited to see the series - Sanada is my favorite Japanses actor, in everything he has ever done.
This show is stunning
One of the best shows/series in years! the acting, the cinematography and the specific tiltshift lenses used in this show is on another level. Can’t wait to next week!
It was truly an honour to work with these three amazing actors on this project! I’m sure everyone will enjoy this epic series immensely!
What was your role?
I was privileged to be hired as the 2nd unit director and stunt coordinator.

One of the best part of this series is the importance and power of language. The emphasis and dynamics of who translates who and their persosnal agenda plus identities is so important
Yeah besides Portuguese didn't speak English at that time
Major props to Nikki Novak for the intelligent questions. By far one of the best press junket interviews I've watched. Well done.
It’s magnificent!
It’s no surprise that a highly intelligent producer cast and crew put it all together!
Gotta give props to RT who have appointed a competent interviewer to suit the calibre of the show - good research, good questions.
It's truly amazing what can be accomplished when talented people, who genuinely care about their job, focus on creating an authentic story based of the source material in which it was written...
I admire Hiroyuki Sanada since he played in "Ninja in the Dragons Den" - I've never turned away from a movie since where he played any part. 100年生きられますように。真田さん
Hiroyuki is a young man. Hope to see many many more projects
He was a young man during the early 80s when he started in NINJA movies, but not now.
The first 2 episodes were so good this show is going to win so many awards.
Hell, I set an alarm for each episode that how much i like it
I spent time in Japan as a child....the art, the spirit, the feel of this series is fulfilling for me.
The 1980 version of Shogun, a mini-series, was itself epic, and this one is even better.
*FX has just confirmed a SECOND series of Shogun also starring Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Yoshii Toranaga).*
I’ve been watching Hiroyuki Sanada since the 70’s . I’m so glad that he is getting the recognition that he so richly deserves. ❤
I was so happy to see this remade. I was a tiny person when the original came out, but I still remember how big a deal it was. This show is a masterpiece and I’m so glad to see Japanese culture presented in this way.
At 10:23 and even before you can see that cosmo can't take his eyes off her. Man he still is in love... He's blackthorn all the time. Love his expression
If you watched Cosmo in this show or in Peaky Blinders you would never expect him to speak the way he does. That's an actor for you.
Lived in Japan for 25 years and have never experienced the type of weather like in that show. It’s so gray and dark, but actually it’s very sunny with blue skies. But I’m nitpicking, great show!
Yeah, even with so many Japanese involved in the series they got the weather all wrong.
1600's were part of Little Ice Age, so weather could easily be like it was portrayed on the show.
Brilliant series that leaves everything else in its dust.
Sanada san and everyone thank you so much for your kokorozashi the true spirit of how much you all can be authentic Japanese cultures. 在米日本人として非常に感激しております。

I have great respect for actors. It is already known that the series is a great success. The cast is excellent. I hope someone will come up with a season 2

Cosmos is a brilliant actor. Crazy how wide the difference is to his character.
Hiroyuki Sanada, the last living legend, the daimyo spirit lives within him.
It was SOOO wonderful! Lady Mariko was so noble!! The interviewer lady did a great job!
It's crazy how well Cosmo Jarvis did. After finishing the show it's hard for me to accept Cosmo was the one who played John. This cast was amazing all around.

Great questions from the interviewer. I appreciate the respect she demonstrated through her intense preparation.
God. I can go on, on, and on about this show and cast….. Utterly BRILLIANT, TRULY, BREATHTAKING……. This show puts me right in the time the story puts you in. The way they’re telling this legendary story is pure and you can tell how much it means to them internally. Breathtaking show. Easily my favorite show of all time, and there’s no competition.

my favorite series EVER! I'm watching it now the 2nd time all the way through. this time savoring it slowly.
Nikki Novak did a great job asking very in-depth questions
I've been a big Sanada'с fan since I first saw him in The Last Samurai. Since then I started to discover his amazing play in all the other movies he took part. My feeling is that in the first place, he is an amazing person and from here starts all the rest. Admiration and respect!
I'm glad they all recognized the amazing role of Hiromatsu. That character could be warm, gentle, close, and the frankest of friends. Or pierce souls with a single word or stare.
I have read the book of Shogun and these all look perfect for the roles
14:00 it was until this weeks episode why I understood that much emphasis on Hiromatsu's character as the embodiment of SAMURAI in the series. It was sooo heart-breaking!
Cosmo has the voice of a classic British actor from the 40 or 50s.Commanding presence.

@@Blisterdude123 I think that’s the mark of a truly talented and honest actor when they don’t try and “replicate” a previous performance but make it all their own while still staying true to the “character” appreciate your thoughts, I’m even more jazzed to start watching
Three mesmerising performances. I would love to stand in just the same room as any of them.
Was lucky to see the first two episodes. It is amazing!!!
The most agonizing part of life is knowing that true gems like Hiroyuki Sanada and a phenomenal and stellar series like Shogun is like finding a diamond in a rough. No media should be created that does not at least approach or equal this level of masterful cinema
