Rule #1 - Be aware of your surroundings.
I believe this is the most important rule of all. If you are aware of what is happening around you will likely be able to avoid these situations entirely.
Truth is no matter how tough (or weak) you think you are no ones knows how they will react until these things actually occur. I have witnesses 'tough' guys who completely lose it when confronted in this way and conversely I have seen seemingly weak and vulnerable people take control and act courageously. Then there is the hero who thinks that they are going to save the day and is usually the first one the get hurt or killed or to get others injured due to their arrogance and stupidity.

Talking about your family or other similar things is a very common stress response, too, as it tries to humanize everyone in the dangerous situation to make violence less likely. In psychology we get cute with our mnemonics and alliteration, so the fight or flight response can be supplemented by other responses like freeze, flop (shut down), friend (humanize oneself), or even fornicate (seductive or sexual behaviors to reduce threat or danger, obviously not a thing in this situation).

Love this channel! I sincerely appreciated your comments at the end! Martial Arts improves when the scientific method, i.e., systematic observation, measurement, experiment, with the formulation, testing, and modification or discarding of hypotheses, is applied. Of course, one first has to ask what one's goal(s) is/are, e.g., self-defense, health, performance, tradition, competition, in order to determine how to apply the method.

The 'get their mind off the matter' / distraction technique is far better explained by UK martial artist and author Geoff Thompson, in his autobiography 'Watch My Back'. Working as a doorman at some really rough clubs during the 1980s, he mastered this technique when he knew he had to throw a strike against an aggressive drunk etc. His favourite question was 'So what are you trying to say?'

I would comply while avoiding any action that might make them nervous. Self defense doesn't always mean fighting back. It means protecting yourself from harm.

grabbing the slide WILL NOT prevent the pistol from firing. It will prevent a second shot. But, you might be dead by that time. This is from a lifetime of defensive pistolcraft training. It is surprisingly easy to twist a gun out of someone's hand, but it must be fast, they will try to pull the trigger. There is a specific way to push the barrel of a semi automatic so it won't fire, but hopefully you have moved the aim away from you at this point. Just grab and twist the barrel out of the hand. Be sure to eject previous round if in chamber and prepare to fire. I totally agree with the comments on this weird video. Just shoot the other guy lol. That dork look will keep others off guard bro nice video.

Yeah size is always important. Size, strength, speed, skill level, mindset. These are all important factors when engaging in combat. But there are always techniques that can negate these factors.
Use of gravity, certain joint locks, “tight” techniques, or utilizing center control can negate someone’s size/weight/strength.
Having your guard up and being able to read movement can negate someone’s speed.
A determined mindset can be negated with tricky tactics and distractions/deceptions.
The only thing that can really negate skill level is a better skill level, luck, or being better prepared/creating some kind of advantage (jumping someone, catching them by surprise, using a weapon, etc)

In my forty plus years in law enforcement, never seen or heard of such a predicament, so on its face its unrealistic. If you grab the slide at least one round will fire, so bringing the gun across your body or face will get you shot. grab the wrist and they can turn the gun to you. Never assume the attacker will stand still, they could suddenly move or pull the gun or knife back, so if you don't close the distance, you could get shot or stabbed. in regard to knowing what the suspect might do or think or react is tricky. if barrell is not grabbed the gun will most likely go off until it is controlled. All great advice and evaluation of the video by mcdojo life.

"But I am a dork, I'm dorky as FUCK..."Aah hahaha, yo, loud & clear, man. The frame that the video ended on is great, you should make that your Bumble profile pic or w/e.
I rly like this video, wish they were always a little longer like this. Liked, added, subbed. Peace & chicken grease & have fun over the holidays.

Hey man, I loved your rant at the end. As a fellow nerd and boxer, I love to see people be genuine and disrupt the stereotypes of fighters. Good on ya.

    NO.
    NO.
    NO.
DO NOT ASK FOR THE TIME WHEN YOU'RE BEING ROBBED. The robbers will IMMEDIATELY assume you're going to repeat that information to the police so they can look into it easier. If you look like a snitch, you will look bloody in a ditch! D:

I think your first two steps would be all that guy would make it through in real life. If not he's going to stain the sidewalk red.

My kempo teacher told me this: always carry fakes. A wallet with maybe 7 bucks in it with cancelled out credit cards, and an old phone. Like my old one, the charging port was all messed up so you can't charge it.
That's probably one best "self defenses" you can do.

This can't be real? I have to believe the dude doing the demo is trolling and hoping Rob sees it is and shows it on mcdojo life.

If you only follow the first 2 steps, you should be safe most of the time.

Also these scenarios generally last a few seconds. There is no time to think. You are either already prepared or not.

A friend of mine had a firearm pointed at him and his friends. Luckily the guy was dumb enough to approach the friends, and got his gun taken away with the twisting disarm. The only disarm that works most of the time

I love how the majority of these instructors are super young Instagram type looking kids that have never been in an actual street fight involving brutal violence that either ends someone in the hospital, or in serious pain.

I have the perfect disarm technique that will work every time, regardless of their size. It's a .357 to the chest
