I wish Space Marines were in more starter sets. A significant lack of representation on GW's part. Also i couldn't believe Kieran didn't enjoy Leviathan. Consider me shocked! 😮
Another great video my guys
Yeah who doesn't like Space Marines right? 🤡 Thank you mate!
the Space what? . . never heard of them
@@Nosh_Feratu right! A marine in space?!?! Sounds delusional. He needs some help.🙄🤣
Indominitus is objectively the best starter box, assault on black reach has the feels.
A cultured individual
I bought 3 when it came out by far indominitus best space marine box imo
@@john12644 my god emperor, is your wallet okay?
@brian2888 lmao it's been hurting since I found out about warhammer but I didn't have many bills at the time I definitely couldn't afford it now I only got one leviathan and I was pretty excited for terminators and tyranids.
Why Indomitus over Leviathan if you don't mind me asking? Just prefer the sculpts?
The rulebook in the third edition box was also the full rulebook with stats for every model and faction available at the time
That it was! A weighty tome of knowledge
True, but they did come out with codexes. I don't think I'll ever forget 5-point Guardsmen going to 6 points.
Nostalgia: 3rd Ed - As a kid I used to study the rules for Warhammer 40k from the advertisement for this starter box via White Dwarf because the money to afford a full starter set was just not there as a kid. I picked up a 5 man box of tactical marines with some cobbled together pocket money, and some lizardmen skinks that my friend gave me, then I would teach myself how to play the basic game mechanics from those pictures alone, using books and coke cans for terrain, and a few dice nicked from other board games kept in the house. After years I eventually had enough minis to have a 1500pt Dark Angels army, entered in a handful of local tournaments and went away with memories that will stay with me forever.
The classic books terrain, shoe boxes were also great for terrain 😂
Leviathan and indomitus looks like the best overall boxes
Indomitus for sure! Leviathan was such a bland sequel 😂
@@the_kieran_showDo you not like the Tyranids? The space marine models are really good and the amount of minis you get is really generous (when it comes to GW box sets).
The Indomitus box was underprinted to the point everyone wanted one and getting one was considered lucky. The Leviathan box was overprinted to the point where everyone could get one pretty heavily discounted, I feel like the supply and demand warps people's perspective on how good a box actually is
I missed Leviathan - I didn’t know better and got the USS :(.
@@Bolton19 There is one issue with Leviathan: Infernus Marines are a completely unnecessary, boring new unit, and there's a lot of those.
@@atlanta_greg_7612 same brother, but USS isnt bad either, you get a terrain!
Unfortunatly Im old enough to remember every edition of 40k, the original Space Hulk was my first ever boxed game. But the 2nd edition box was fantastic, I was 14 and everything from that time hits me with the nostalgia feels. Between that and 3rd edition we got Necromunda, Gorkamorka and Warhammer Quest. Happy times.
A simpler time!
Dark vengeance hits me in the feels!
Never got the chance to get it but for me all the minis just look so good
Yeah they are so good!
from "what armies you would paint" we still need to see Kieran wearing a toga and painting ultramarines.
He did it in a livestream a little while back 😃
@@the_kieran_show do you know which one. would love to go back and watch it.
@@medum998it’s from two months ago, called “KIERAN PAINTS IN A TOGA”
@@Blazik9 thanks
Leviathan is great for Terminators but Indomitus is definitely the best, probably some of my favorite minis in my collection, made me, a jaded Tyranid painter with no new releases actually like Space Marines.
Yeah it was really good for terminators but that was it 🫠
Oh man, the Dark Vengeance starter set ist where it all began for me. And looking back at the contents of that box, there is no surprise there that it got me hooked
Yeah it was fire!
I stopped playing 40k a few years before Dark Vengeance came out. When I saw its painted minis at the local store, my first thoughts were: Those have a lot more details than the minis I was playing with previously. They might even have TOO MANY details.
For someone who has mostly played 3rd to 5th editions, the Horus Heresy Age of Darkness box is such a nostalgia flashback. It even comes with whippy sticks!!
Long live the whippy sticks!!!!
I was like “why does everyone like Indomitus so much it’s such a mid box and I’d know cause I have it” but then i realized I didn’t own the biggest edition so I didn’t have all the cool models.
🙃🙃🙃
Much respect Scott. You are more than a decade ahead of most.
Who is Scott 😂
There's a worrying lack of any Huey Lewis and the News, considering you're time travelling!
IT DONT TAKE MONEY, DONT TAKE FAME
Vrosh Tattersoul is the name of the exalted champion, from memory

I loved old pre-fire Trago as a kid. Now it feels like it exists in a weird time bubble, garden centre is good though, and where else can you chill with baby peacocks whilst eating a pasty
Trago is just a weird time phenomenon in general
Thanks for this amazing video.
I had no idea about launch boxes. Leviathan was my first one. Unfortunately I had my hiatus just after 2nd edition launched!! Gallons of water under the bridge.
It was great to learn all about the different editions I’ve missed.
Loving being back in the hobby.
Thanks for the kind words!
Didnt really know much about 40k until about 2 years ago, right before the launch of 10th, so ironically my nostalgia pick is Leviathan, but I absolutely love the Captain and Lt w/ relic shield and the bladeguard so indomitus has got to take it for best box. Excited for yalls livestream tomorrow even if Im in class right before it starts.
Levi is still a great pick, but Indomitus was something special!
I misread the title as "Lunch Box" and was like "there's 40k lunch boxes?"
I'd absolutely love a line of 40k lunchboxes
Battle for macragge was my first! Me and my dad built it and still have the crashed ship from it now! Great little narative missions in it too!
Oh that’s awesome!
Through my hobby journey, I've owned all of those boxes at one point or another. Lol. Love your channel guys, keep up the great work!
Thanks for the kind words! 🫡
I only just finished painting my Gretchin from the 2nd Edition box a few months ago!!
No way! Did you have the from launch or pick them up recently? 😂
@@the_kieran_show I got them for Christmas 1994!! I painted all the marines different colours because I couldn't choose a scheme and left most of the orks and gretchin unpainted - I did make an effort with some of the Goffs sometime around 3rd but that was about it!!!
I still have some miniatures from second, third, fifth, and now tenth. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. New miniatures look great. Black Reach is the best. Looking forward to the future.
No way!
@@the_kieran_show I got back into the hobby in June this year. Went looking for a box in the garage to store my new leviathan set, and found 2nd edition Eldar, 2/3/5Orks and 2/3/5 Blood Angles. Imagine my surprise when my first mini, Karandras was still the same mini for Eldar. Warhammer Fantasy and Battle Fleet Gothic were lost Chaos moving gods.
Me and my brother got this, was brilliant, he had a space wolf army and I had Eldar
Can’t remember what happened with the orks
Did they also stay in the hobby after that?!
@@the_kieran_show I got back in last year actually, and dragged him in also!! He's thinking of getting an Ork army
@@the_kieran_show Also all out models were metal so weighed a ton, and our Mum got rid of them all while we were at Uni! I had the original 1988 terminator box set and the harlequin one also. Loved both of those boxes, but won't go on ebay to pick them up, inflation hit them hard....
I started in 2nd edition and have a lot of nostalgia for the 2nd and 3rd ed boxes but the Leviathan box has to be my favourite. You get sooo much stuff and it's all decent. No wasted space with terrain either. Indomitus is pretty much on par with it in terms of quality but I prefer the minis in Leviathan.
The sheer amount of miniatures in leviathan was insane!
Battle for Macragge always brings up good memories, my first entry point into the game haha remember begging my mom to let me get. Store employee offered a trial match of the minis in store to get a feel for the game (even though he thought it'd be too hard for me at that age). After thoroughly beating that guy in store mom caved and got me the set lol
Such a cool story!
Trago Mills is the jewel(s) of the South West!
A Devon staple
Used to love the death slides
A nice trip down memory lane. I started with 3rd, 4th and 5th edition boxes. Took a break missed out on a couple of boxes I would have loved to get Dark Imperium and Indomitus....and then we got Leviathan as a family.
Very cool!
3rd edition was my first foray in too warhammer for my 10th birthday. Amazing amazing artwork
Yeah the art was a real level up!
@@the_kieran_show massive thanks to you guys for the content. Always enjoy your kids, and this one was a proper nostalgia hit
Been to trago mills, bought a box of sanguinary guard nd in over 10 years I have painted one of them :)
As far as favourite box, Indomitus if I'm being logical but Macragge for nostalgia as it was my first ever foray into warhammer!
Someone of culture we see 🫡
I remember saving my pocket money and going halvers with my bro to buy the 2nd ED box
I did the same but with the old Warhammer Fantasy box!
the name of the chaos aspiring champion from the 2012 Dark Vengeance box set was Vrosh Tattersoul just a heads up
mvp
I got in on second edition. You could buy the box at Argos when Argos was in its prime and amazing. I was maybe 12 or 13 and over painted those minis to hell. But that was amazing to play
Prime time Argos was the best!
So I didn't have my glasses on and I read it as 40k lunch boxes. I was expecting corpse starch sandwiches or squig-on-a-stick.
That sounds like a much better video 😂
Just recently picked up a copy of Second Edition box for £70 and it additionally came with all the miniatures from old Space Crusade in it and a couple of metal characters. Looking forward to painting them up. That was when I first got into 40k and actually the last time I played the game was 94 or 95 with those marines and orks. Took a small 25ish year break.
No way! That’s awesome!
I had no idea that I was so ahead of the time with me building a 2 box of Chaos Space Marines back in ‘99.
I had a cool squad of CSM that were all different and then i had entire box of these short guys with a knife and bolt pistol and they were monopose.
Thats awesome! One of the OG CSM players!👀
@@the_kieran_show I wish i could find the set! One box is easily found online but the other box is nowhere to be found online!
They were these lil stout guys who had a bolt 🔫 in one hand and a knife in the other and the whole box was monopose. They had a single spike on their helmet and generic armor. Maybe you know what I mean? i can’t find them anywhere online, perhaps they were bootlegge🤔
Love the Targo Mills reference - Particularly snce it's during the review of the last box I got before then returning to 40k late 9th in time for Levaithan
Trago Mills crew massive
Crimson slaughter for me that box was amazing all the models were brilliant & launched new kits for all of them apart from chaos for some reason they only got a multipart hell brute lol then it took until last year to finally get chosen & cultists but the models in that box set were all amazing
Yeah they really need to fix this box locking issue.

The only launch boxes that I bought myself are 3rd edition and Leviathan. Which are both middle of the pack. However, Leviathan contains the reason that I got back into 40k after over a decade: New, refined and properly primaris-sized Terminators. So I guess I pick Leviathan. O_O
And congratulations on 10k subscribers! (30k more to go.)
The terminators in Leviathan are wicked! just wish we had new assault ones to go with them!
I am 100% sure we will get those as well. I hope it will be soon, but we might have to wait until the launch of 11th edition.
I distinctly remember getting the dark vengeance box and indeed whipping with the weird red sticks
It was a right of passage
My Nostalgic favourite is Black Reach, first squad I ever painted was some 4e Assault Terminators and I loved facing my sisters Orc army from 5th edition.
But the best box in my opinion is Dark Vengeance (I collect Dark Angels and love the theming) the Chaos in that box are gorgeous. Everything is SO Grimdark and it was cool enough to last 2 editions!
Also I'm a sucker for 1stborn 😂
Yeah we definitely lost something coming out of dark vengeance!
I was introduced to 40K as a kid with 2nd edition before dropping the hobby in my early teens. When 8th edition brought me back (having missed 3-7), I was genuinely surprised they had a plastic vehicle in the box (how generous!) and not a cardboard stand-in. 2nd edition has never really left my head, I guess. Still fighting the urge to paint my Blood Angels orange.
Had to give my head a wobble after seeing that cardboard stand in. Horrendous when you look back 😂
Macragge was also my first, loved that box. I still got the terrain! The cool pilot man is long gone though.
That poor poor pilot 🫠
The Dark Vengeance chaos units still stand up 100% next to the new Chaos Legionaries. I often forget which are which half the time when I have them on the tabletop together.
Yeah they do, the only sign sometimes is the size!
I love the old green Necrons bits
Until you loose them in a carpet 😂
2nd Ed box was an excellent Christmas present.
Totally!
Unfortunately I started with march for macragge but for the nostalgia I love it

Second edition launched the month I started the hobby 😮😮 I'd have sworn it was more than £35 but teenage me saw anything over a fiver as a savings goal lol
Sounds familiar! hahaha
I started with that 1987 box set, I still have a few on the sprue.
Wow! Thats an achievement
2nd Edition and 3rd Edition were the only two I picked up in period, then recently got the Dark Angels half of the Dark Vengeance box. Still have all of the minis from the first two box sets- in fact I have a quarantine box that is filled with horrifically painted mono-pose 2nd Edition Space marines (all 10!) and more single-piece Gretchen models than I can count- if you told me that box set came with 2000 of them I would believe you! Fortunately I still have loads of my original 2nd edition models (and boxes), including loads of Ravenwing bikes etc- so remaking a non-Primaris Dark Angels army is proving a lot of fun. Unfortunately those 2nd Edition starter box Marines are absolutely tiny even compared with the 3rd edition Marines, and so will be confined to their box of mid-90s painting shame until such time as I take pity on them and start stripping off the multiple thick layers of paint like some horrific time-capsule onion... All of those Marines have done time in most of the major SM chapter colours, their armour now thick with the weight of poorly applied (un-thinned) paint, and now extremely light on surface detail. Great video and I always enjoy any trip down WH40k memory lane.
Still having all the minis is really cool!
@@the_kieran_show also seeing the Necrons in the Indomitus box reminded me I also have a small Necron force of all the original late 2nd Ed metal models (warriors / immortals / scarabs / lord / destroyers) back when they were still Space Terminators rather than Space Egyptians!
i bought the 1987 box when i was about 15-16years old around 1990, i loved the rocketlauncher and that the kits could be posed compare with the older metal minins
Awesome!!!!
Will you do this for age of sigmar when 10th edition for that comes out? Love the video, awesome idea
Ooooh that could be fun!
2nd edition was my favourite edition and yes I’d buy it and dark millennium if they were made to order. I’d say 8th-10th have been the best boxes for new starters.
There isn’t enough pigment in the world to print those 2nd edition colours again 😂
Best Space Marines starter box is.. Horus Heresy Age of Darkness.
* Can still buy it new for a LOT less money than ANY 40k flagship starter box
*100% Space Marines, no Xenos scum here (note: may contain heretics)
*Huge Land Raider in an updated 2nd ed. style
*Contemptor dread = best dread. Can be easily posed and magnetized. Additional weapons available.
*2 pretty decent character models
*10 Cataphractii terminators
*A whopping 40 MKVI marines that can be built in about 4,000 different ways using separate upgrade kits.
*Hardback rulebook for a game system that doesn't suck.
*Nothing is now in the legends bin.
*Plastic blast templates
*WHIPPY STICKS
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Oooooh hot takes I like it! When it comes to SM boxes it's hard to disagree, it's such a beautiful box, I'd argue that every HH big box so far has been amazing.
Coolest is indomitus, but I love leviathan for giving me infernus marines as a Salamander player
That’s very true!
I recently saw one of those Imperial Space Marines boxes on a flea market sadly for me some other guy was faster than me and bought it for 10 bucks.
No way!!!
Well, Kieran, Yk your nightlords army? Well, I think I have the right thing to spike your interest again. Look at the artel W midnight stalker. Maybe a Konrad kurze for your army? 😅(pls I’m literally begging)
The knight lords have all been sold. The army is dead ☠️

Hopefully in the future we will have some battle reps or something!
I started at the beginning of 8th and found it hard to beat for $125. With that, i got 2 1000pt armies and the rules were easy enough to get the hang of it by myself.
The absolute dream!
dark vengeance definitely had the whippy sticks too!
God bless whippy sticks
2nd ed for my nostalgia, AoBR for being great. Modern age, both indomitus and leviathan are brilliant. However, rules wise, 2nd/ 4th.
2nd edition purely for the colours 😂😂
@@the_kieran_show If you've never played it, highly recommend it. I've been undergoing a retro project for the last few years, nostalgia overload lol. There were so many colours then though. Loved it 😄
Got into the hobby with 9th, hard to argue that Indomitus is the best box, Tyranids are my favourite faction so I enjoy Leviathan for that, but Indomitus was just such a magical set of minis. Nostalgia pick is Black Reach because when i was first looking into Warhammer at 11 years old i remember seeing it thinking it was massive. I couldn't paint for shit though so i just stuck to Space Marine on 360
Space Marine on Xbox 360. What a time to be
@@the_kieran_show you guys should be all asleep after the madness of the 10k stream lol get some rest
Where is it possible to buy a leviathan box set? Doubt there would be one for indomitus as well.
Leviathan your best bet is third party stores and eBay. Anything further back you've probably got no chance!
Ah. How unfortunate, I kinda want it just for the neurotyrant. Though honestly. Doubt I can acquire the box at the moment.
Had it all till the last two, still have most of it all painted.
Wow that’s quite a collection
Now compare the AoS launch boxes and their value relative to the 40k ones. Skaventide is a banger of a box at least.
The only issue is there’s only been 3 of them for AoS so far! Very short video 😂
What about the ultimate starter sets? whats your guy's take on it
It’s a great set! All the 40K starter sets this edition are pretty good!
And now that we know what the best launch box is, can you clear up next what the best 40k lunch box is? Much appreciated ^^
A Rhino is the best lunch box. Just ask the Tyranids.
Was Shadowspear not a launch box? I thought it was for 8th edition - with the Phobos Primaris marines and the Black Legion
Best known for the model which inspired Captain Severus “SCOTLANNNND FOREVERRRR” Acheran
Nope, it was just a scenario FOMO box really!
I'm with left kieran, blackreach for the vibes and indomitus for the logic.
A man of culture I see.
I picked up Battle for Mac at a charity shop. In tact. It is awesome. But indomitus is just so much kit
Oh nice!
I got into the hobby during the pandemic at the end of 8th edition just before Indomitus and 9th edition dropped. I had been aware of 40K for decades (born in '75) but didn't like the minis, so didn't get into it. During the pandemic I realised Primaris were a thing. Anatomically correct Space Marines? Yes please. Didn't catch on until 2 years later. So 4 years into the hobby I have over 9K points Iron Hands and about 5K points of Emperor's Children. Currently painting up 2K Drukhari.
Oh wow! Bet you’re excited for the new EC range next year!
Miniatures wise Indominitus is the best ever…3rd edition’s presentation was the most 40k mostly thanks to the John Blanche cover and the rule book’s art direction.
Yeah the art was amazing!
7e Dark Vengeance did NOT come with the Interrogator-Chaplain. I know, it was where I started with 40K

Where do you have this prices? The most boxes cost four times as much!
These are the launch prices from way back, not the current eBay prices
Understanding inflation is a rabbit hole, here is the very short basic version. TL;DR To much money chasing to few goods cause prices to rise over time. Blame the government.
Over civilizational history governments finance spending via two primary methods: taxation and money printing. Using the US as an example; when a government wants to spend more money than they bring in via taxes, (aka every government ever) currency is created by a central bank. (previous printing was limited due to the gold standard but the western world no longer follows that rule) It is important to realize that there is no limit to the amount of currency that can be created by the central bank out of nothing, today a central banker simply adds more zeroes to the spread sheet to increase the money supply.
With that said, over time as more currency is created it needs to go somewhere. This increase in the currency supply causes prices to rise in reaction to the total currency supply floating around in the economy. If you look at the US as an example, the stated goal of the Federal Reserve (US central bank) is 2% inflation every year. This is why prices increase, it is a goal of governments to ever increase the supply of currency floating around in order to allow them to spend more than they bring in via taxation.
Also the stated goal of most central banks is 2% inflation year on year. However what they can't do is directly control what that % is. Central banks only have indirect influence on what that number is via interest rates and increasing the currency supply. So, when they lose control of that number you get massive inflation, i.e. what has been happening over that last couple years.
One final point, when you look at the price of something like a warhammer box in 1993 at 40 pounds and compare it inflation adjusted to today at 73 pounds, that is cumulative inflation over time.
Damn what an explanation 🫡
Wish i had started a few years ago and got the indominitus box 😢
