Love my FTM-400. Bit the bullet and ordered the FTM-500. Looking forward to figuring it out. Compared to the 500 the 400 seems a little more intuitive.
I think, if a radio receives a msg addressed to its call sign and number, the RX radio will send and ACK back to the TX radio so it will stop the TX radio from attempting to resend the msg. I have seen aprsdroid software with the moblinkd tnc will try resending the msg like 3 times unless it receives the correct ACK. The ACK also contains a number to id the specific msg. :) COOL Radios!!
Can you add a segment showing how you use ABC touch screen keyboard on Ftm500 to tap out a random aprs message maybe 10 or 15 character long rather than rotating the knob for each letter?

Both excellent it's a much bulkier device has some need features that the 400 does not have .

You just tap screen .
does it flash that you got a message like it does on the hand held on the FTM-500

The main is on top the Sub is on the bottom, its the VFO that is A or B. Which VFO has to be on the top ???
The VFO that you use to TX will have to be on top .
How to change the custom message (0...6) shown in 99. POSITION COMMENT ?

you set the wrong frequency for APRS in the uk it should be 144.800 not 145 .800
