I went to Ireland in 2013 for a family wedding (what a ball teaser that was). I visited Cootehill in Cavan , the town of my ancestors.
I visited the library and casually mentioned my heritage, gave some details of my search along with my name and heritage and left.
Within 5 days the whole feckin' town swore they were related to me, my landlady had put the word around town that I had "come home", it was an edifying and enjoyable experience and I was able to get a sweet feeling for what my forebears had left behind...
My family are "holy romans" and being in Cavan we were close to Ulster and the "troubles" were readily recounted.
Interestingly I was not permitted to enter Northern Ireland because of insurance restrictions on my rented car. I thinks Europecar feared that my (their) car would get blowed up?
It was a real hoot, and I hope to return

Love this! Thanks Niall. I just got back from a lovely three days in Ireland, visiting Ballinamore and Clones. My great-grandfather was John Smith, but thanks to growing up around his 10 children, I've been able to learn a lot about him. Keep these tips coming!

Lovely video. I have found an irish marriage certificate of my great great grandparents in Tralee 1883. He was protestant (serving in Regimental Band) and she was I think a local catholic! (My mum remembers her Gran being strict Catholic). They came back to England shortly after. In later censuses it says she (Maria, b1860) was born in Cudda, Mountrath, father Patrick Finne. I found a Pat Finne mentioned in a will in the Mountrath. Could that be the same person? Very little else found but would love to find out more.

Is there a way to trace an ancestor by their addresses? I think it would be a great way to confirm people with so many of the same names. It’s easy to add an unrelated person from the same town with the same name.

    Ireland Forever!
I could listen to an Irishman talking all day long. Niall is splendid. Would love to know something about all the different spellings of names such as Niall. Even Neil is pronounced as Niall in Ireland. Also there are several variations of Neil. Also Ciaran has different spellings.

Wonder could anyone help with a genealogy question. Am trying to trace my grandfather James Byrnes buriel place. He was born Carlow approx 1860. ( family legend always said he was a Methodist preacher) He married an Anne Ledwidge R.C from Kildare in 1882 in Trim co.Meath he was listed as a labourer. his father's occupation given as Shopkeeper Carlow. In 1911 census ( Sligo) he was a labourer in the GWR railway.and a RC. In the 1911 census he is listed as a Signalman and Church of England. That's the last census available. I got whatever details available from the GWR just the different places he worked and his salary Records ended September 1912_ when he retired ( possibly in Ill health as a married man with kids aged 52 its doubtful if he threw up a job with the railway, would have had no other work experience)I have checked the civil records for his death but nothing matches,( family legend says he got gangrene of hand from a rose thorn and died) My only last hope of finding where he is buried would be in Births Marriages and Deaths. but when were they first published and would ordinary folk waste money by putting death notices in newspapers , I presume he died in Sligo,Being a signalman would one of the very local papers ( Ballisodare, or Carrignagat ) where he was a signalman perhaps make mention of his passing. I'm really stumped and would welcome any helpful suggestions. 3 of his young children are buried in the local Ballisodare cemetery St. Fechin le four. found them in Historic graves site. His wife Anne is reputedly buried there as well. So here's hoping someone could throw some light on the subject .Thanking you in anticipation

How can I get a birth certificate of May, my Irish born grandma? I know her birthdate (she immigrated and died in the US). I know she was single and head of household, and living on Nun's Island in Galway city from the 1911 Irish census (she was 24 then). But, in no way can I with any certainty link her last name (Lydon) to a father, even though I have her maiden mother's, and her father's names. I am desiring citizenship through descent and a passport. I have searched Ancestry extensively. What if she is illegitimate? Can she still be traced? What would be on a birth certificate of someone illegitimate? I just can't link her to a family in the 1901 census when she was 14..

what about landless labors in Ireland, they weren't farmers, so no dog license, no griff land valuation is going to help. And what about Northern Ireland. from before the famine

ABC Northern ireland was created in the 1920s it didn't exist at the time of the famine or before the famine .Of course the north of ireland and the province of ulster existed

There are no civil records north or south from before the famine births only go back to 1864 and marriages about 1840. And Vhurch Records hopeless, have never found anyone in tbem You could search Parish Records I wish you luck with the writing some of them so unreadable they are not worth a curse, however good luck, happy hunting.
