Take pride and pleasure in the fact that you will have equipped Jacob well. I'm guessing there are lots of aspiring plumbers who would love to learn from you, Tom.
Would give anything to have you as my boss, the knowledge and workmanship is second to none. So hard to find a good company to learn from. Unfortunately I live in Scotland 😔
Sorry to hear about Jacob. I couldn't do the same thing all the time. Love the variety. As a 40 year old newly qualified L2 with G3 I can't afford an apprenticeship so I'm having to learn the hard way doing my own jobs and learning as I go. Jacob was really lucky to have such a great teacher. I'm onto my gas in January but I just want it to be a part of my business not my 9-5.
Thanks for the support as always Tom, I will miss him, hopefully I can find someone else, I just paid for all his gas, as you probably know training doesn't come cheap
That gallo gun is bloody handy.👍🙂 Years ago, employers used to kick apprentices out after they qualified. After he's scratched his itch trying other stuff he may come back. One thing though he got great training from you. 👍
It happens all the time, Tom . You've given him invaluable knowledge. He'll think back on many occasions thinking 'well Tom would do this' 😂. My boss put me through my gas . I'm still with him now (12 years later). The guy changed my life and can't thank him enough. Head down arse up kid .... keep it up
It’s a shame that Jacob left, but he couldn’t have had a better person to mentor and train him, and I expect he appreciates that. Personally, I would prefer doing the very wide range of work that you do, rather than just boilers, which would possibly get a bit boring after a while, but I suppose it’s easier. Hope you get a new person in soon to help out - being your apprentice would be a brilliant opportunity for some lucky person. Thanks again for an excellent video Tom, and have a great weekend!
Well said Tom a true gent. Makes a change from certain other plumbers on here who have to shout swear and act like idiots. Plus you’re by far the most skilled. 👍
I always say the grass is always greener on the other side because generally someone is fertilizing it with bull s**t. Sometimes the job is not always what you want but the people are the ones that make it and you seem like you would be a great bloke to work for.
Thanks for the support mate, like you say these things don't always turn out to be what they say, I did my best for him but sometimes people don't always see that
Great Video Tom, Sorry to hear about Jacob going, It’s hard when you put all the time into to your apprentice but keep in touch with him because sometimes lads go for a few months and come back on contract work and can work out better, hopefully 🤞 😎👍🤜
Sorry to hear that Jacob is leaving you nate, your right these things happen, Good luck getting someone else I'm sure you will as your knowledge is right up there.
You seem like a good man Tom, hope you find someone just as good soon. Personally, I couldn't leave a company so soon after having that time and money invested in me. I'm a loyal person, eighteen years with my current company.
Hi Tom, sad to hear that Jacob has moved on, but I’m sure you will survive. Things never stop changing you constantly have to adapt, even more so these days I think. Another great film, thank you Tom, as always have a great weekend and take care. 👍👍👍
Great vid tom...New job or not he and you both will always know who trained him. You've created the future.be proud of that. Ps tom what's your preferred tool for pressurising an expansion vessel on say an unvented cylinder?? Thanks and have a great weekend
Thank you for the video Tom, the grass always seems greener on the other side when you get there it aint. Jacob may find down the road what he was promised does not come to fruition. He may regret his decision but hey ho chin up Tom tomorrow is another day there will be someone who hopefully will fill his boots!!👍
Shame about Jacob Tom, but as always you are your normal understanding self. Good blokes are hard to come across but hopefully someone will come along soon mate👍🏻
Hi Tom l appreciate your views and comments on recruitment and staff etc , people are unique and will do their own thing and find out if it was for better or worse. Keep well
It’s not a good time when someone move on, and good luck to him and it’s sometimes better to be a good all rounder, anyway good luck with getting someone in, hopefully you’ll have a good weekend and put your feet up, another job I’m looking forward too seeing competed if you got any more video on it have a nice one Tom👍👍👍👍👍🍺🍺
Thanks for the support as always Tom, I like variety in my work, I think he had a nice jon here, I was going to put him through his oil, have a great weekend mate
I'm not sure, I know where he's going and they do mainly combi swaps, they get 50 pound bonus if they do it in a day, it just means the lads throw stuff in to get the bonus money, they get charged 50p per mile though for taking the vans home, so it evens itself out, thanks for watching mate
Tip for the future. If you train someone up and pay for courses etc. Get them to sign a contract that they have to stay with the company for 12months eg. Or they will have to pay for it. If they leave before then.
@@PlumbLikeTomI worked for a company few years back….made us sign a contract stating we had to pay money back for the courses….bloke left, they wanted money. But he went to citizens advised and told him it wasn’t enforceable…he didn’t pay them anything
“Suicide valves”😂 we all try them once just incase that one and one day only they work and don’t leak. 9am on a Tuesday they might work. Anything after 2pm impossible. Cheers Tom 👍
The Jacob sinario is a shame Tom, but the grass isn’t always greener, it’s a shame for you, I worked for a bloke like you when I was Plumbing, and the variety of skills I learned was invaluable, I’m 58 now and been out of the trade for 30 years but still help out friends and family, because as my old gaffer used to say” they will never take your hands away lad “ and I still enjoy doing it, I hope young Jacob doesn’t regret his decision, but fear he may. You take care Tom and keep going, and you never know, I might need some work soon as I’m coming to the end of my second career and still got my tools 👍🚽
I paid for everything, college where messing him around so I paid for him to go to a gas training centre, I even paid all wages for the days he went, thanks for watching mate
I'm really sorry mate to hear that thats not nice of him if you do think about getting someone else maybe think about a contract so if you pay for it and once they are about to qualify they have to work with u for a period of time or they can be liable to pay it all back
Great shame about Jacob. This might be controversial but I have worked for companies where if you leave you have to pay back a percentage of your training costs based on a sliding scale dependant on how soon you leave after you qualified. An example for me was retake your gas or oil tickets then leave you had to pay back %100 if you left within 12months.%50 after 18months not unfair I think. It can make people consider their commitment also importantly their employers investment providing their apprenticeship/training. Keep up the great work Tom wish you all the best for the future.
Pity I'm not 20 years younger I'd of took the job😉. You do lots of different work which keeps it interesting I couldn't do boilers all week. Onwards and upwards tom me old mucka 👍👍
In future Tom anyone who's gas you pay for has to work for you for two years or pay back the money you spent on the training . You do a great variety of work which would suit me but not everyone is like that. Chin up ☺
i know business is business, and people move on, but at least he should offer to pay towards the expense to get his gas. that would be the right thing for him to do.
"An employer once said, "What if I train my people and they leave?" I say, what if you don't train them... and they stay..." Sad news, but my own industry it's pretty common for the young guys (and girls) to move on after their first few years - but if you hire a mix of newbies and people with a bit of experience, it all evens out in the end.

If you couldn't convince him to stay it's annoying i know but one day he'll live to regret his decision to leave, after a year or so of fitting and servicing boilers and he's bored of doing the same thing or he realises it's not as easy as you make it look he'll be on the phone to you asking for his job back at which point you'll have to think once bitten. Unfortunately being a young bloke he probably doesn't realise the best way to get on in any trade is if your being given the chance to experience almost every aspect of your trade take it with open arms, give it a few years then move on not as soon as you are qualified and still wet behind the ears because that is when you really start learning. ( I bet he'll be on the phone to you picking your brain about certain boilers when he's stuck).
Thanks for the support as always Anthony, I had it before where my a lad I worked with left, and he kept ringing me up every minute wanting to be picking my brains.
