2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Review : The ultimate 991

  • We thought we’d nailed our bucket list after burning up Johannesburg’s Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in the new 911 Turbo S - but all that was blown out of the water after riding shotgun in the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS with works driver Jorg Bergmeister.
    Sure enough, if I’d thought the blindingly quick 911 Turbo S was as good as it could get, the GT3 RS soon proved to be another kind of weapon entirely - this is the 911 you buy when the already brilliant GT3 isn’t quite enough.
    It’s a difficult car to describe, on the one hand it’s a streetcar for the racetrack, and on the other it’s a race car for the street. Either way, this is the 911 that all others are measured by. And for the first time, I get to drive it.
    The GT3 RS borrows its wide body from the 911 Turbo to make room for the massive 325/30 ZR 21 Michelin Cup Sport 2 rear tyres - the widest fit ever on a Porsche 911
    It’s as close to a full-blown racing car as is possible for a 911 road car to be, and yet, you still get a beautifully crafted cockpit made from the finest materials. Acres of alcantara, beautifully lacquered carbon fibre inlays, it’s a very special place to be.
    It’s also a faultless instrument of power, precision and emotion. One that is totally, totally addictive. And that 4.0-litre flat-six lays claim to one of the best 911 engine notes you’re likely to hear this side of a factory Le Mans entry.

      i disagree, his use of words is excellent for that pace. Fast talkers who babble can be annoying like Chris Harris.

    Most gt3rs have always been housed in the Turbo body shell. I am not sure about the 996 version tho.

    please tell me that they left the air lift system in the front up... if that's a wheel gap from factory then...

    • @theways1234
      @theways1234 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahah most likely. The 991 GT3RS will rub from the factory in its full sport mode. Porsche even admits they think the customers will trade some rubbing for a couple seconds on the track. Cheers

    nice, but maybe take it to a race track to get the best out of it.. and to be able to heel and toe downshift with a car like that with a proper manual box is what that car should be about.

      Porsche uses that number to indicate what generation the car is.
      964 (1990-1993)
      993 (1993-1998)
      996 (1998-2005)
      997 (2004-2012)
      991 (2013-present)

    Stop with all the manual BS, It is a track car designed to go fast around a track. Buy a 911R or a GTS if you want to shift gears

    • @goognamgoognw6637
      @goognamgoognw6637 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      next someone will tell you stop with that steering wheel BS, buy an ancient 2018 Porsche if you still want to turn a wheel. On a track, a computer steering will get the curves apex better than you ever can. Same continuation of the argument for suppressing manual transmission.

    • @visualwarp9707
      @visualwarp9707 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Kastner - I agree completely. I’ve driven the RS on track. The PDK is superb and the “right tool for the job”. You need both hands on the steering and PDK lets you do that. The moaning in all the comments about ‘it should be manual” is absurd. This is a street legal race car. It’s built to be as fast as possible around a track and still be able to drive to and from the track on public roads. Anyone who thinks manual transmission is anywhere near as fast as PDK has obviously never driven a car with PDK. So to argue against it when you haven’t tested it is ignorant. There are plenty of other non-track focused 911s that have manual. But the GT3 and especially the RS are made for PDK. But people whine so Porsche accommodates. All that means is there will be GT3s in circulation now that are crippled with manual transmissions. What is the point of that. Collectors will buy them believing they are more valuable - and never drive them. Just a waste of a great car.

    • @freud2695
      @freud2695 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree VW. The majority of people crapping on about the manual vs pdk debate have never even driven these cars.

  • @alexanderthegod9553
    @alexanderthegod9553 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    But why would I choose this over a turbo S? The Turbo S is faster off the line and has a larger top speed. Its also 4WD so I could drive it during the swedish winters aswell.

      Dat wing...

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because this is a drivers car... that's why it should have proper manual gearbox.

    • @alexanderthegod9553
      @alexanderthegod9553 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But in this case. It does not. So the Turbo S is a way better choice.
      And if you want a drivers car from Porsche, just get the Cayman GT4.

    • @BenzinioB
      @BenzinioB 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlexanderTheGod It is the more civilized choice. RS is trackdays car. Much more sports car for the public road then vice versa...
      And to be honest I'll take the old Boxter S. There is no much place on public roads to explore the GT4 capability and hardly believe it worth it to have such hardcore car for... I don't know may be 10 days in the year when I'll go to the track...
      Boxter S will be win / win combination less money for more everyday joy of driving :)

    • @alexanderthegod9553
      @alexanderthegod9553 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Benzinio True, but then again a boxter is a cabriolet, and is not very usable on a daily basis, and if u are gonna spend money on a Boxster S you might aswell get a manual 911 with acouple options on it.

    Nothing like it? Try Japanese sportbikes since the early 90s.
