Oh my just seen this now. Felt my throat drop & tears well up & I'm 42. Still & will always be, one of the most emotional experiences of my life when I saw it in theatres when I was 7 or 8. Even as a kid I wanted to see John Williams perform live. No words just pure majesty!!

You all need to understand something about this piece. Steven Spielberg edited the movie so that the score would fit the scene and he could use the entirety of John Williams work. That entire scene was crafted AROUND the work of John Williams. Do you know how often that happens in the film industry? Let me explain this to you: That NEVER HAPPENS in the film industry. More often than not, filmmakers use compositions and scores however they wish, chopping them up and using them wherever they need or want. In this case, Steven Spielberg loved the piece so much that he decided to make the movie fit the music. The result is one of the most amazing final acts of any film ever made. Both the music and the movie work together in symbiosis to tell a story - and that story is so incredibly emotional, and John Williams' score so stunningly beautiful and wondrous - that one can't help but to shed a tear, despite the fact that they are seeing an abnormal situation unfold on screen. But then, that's the beautiful thing about E.T. - it's not really a movie about an alien, it's a movie about divorce. Eliot was so affected by E.T. because he saw him as an equal, a partner, someone who needed him just as much as he needed that someone else. The final scene is effective in making us cry because we understand that relationship, that symbiosis between Eliot and E.T., and we hear and see that same kind of symbiosis between music and film on the screen, and it all comes together wonderfully. The end result is that with just a few words, Eliot and E.T. share an incredibly emotional moment in which everything and nothing are said, a moment that every child of a divorced parent has had to experience many times in their lives - the "come" and "stay" moment, in which the child is forced to tell the person that means more to them than anything in the world that they cannot go with them and must stay with the other parent. His mother drops to her knees, perhaps signifying an understanding of the situation and a knowledge that she has seen this before and it is happening yet again to her darling child. No parent wants to see that. No child of a divorced parent wants to relive it. But we must, and we carry on, as Eliot did in this scene. When E.T. points his finger to Eliot's head and says "I'll be right here," that is yet another moment that every child of divorced parents experiences, but instead of making some meaningless gesture toward his chest, E.T. points to his head - to the actual place that holds his memories and his capacity for love. In this moment, we see him grow up before our very eyes, and John Williams follows that up powerfully and emotionally to finish the film. This music not only explains the emotional depth of the scene, it also EXPLORES those emotional depths, bouncing around with such distress and whimsy that one can't help but to react if they have truly invested in the work. John Williams is the greatest composer of our times. He wrote the soundtrack to our childhood, and I will never forget that. When he eventually passes, I am going to bawl like a baby. This man is a national treasure. I love you, John Williams.

Never mind 50, let's say 100 years from now. This is a film that stands the test of time and becomes a generational film that everyone grows up with, like Wizard of Oz.
NO argument there!!!! I was here at this performance, and it was just as wonderful as watching E.T. for the first time in 82 when I was 12. LOL And in 2 years it's going to be the 40th anniversary of this film. And just like the 30th I will be there for the 40th.
As far as I am concerned, this is the greatest 15 minutes in the history of film and the music is a HUGE part of it. And thank you, John Williams, for showing the REAL version of the film where the cops carry guns instead of walkie talkies!
Same here. At almost 55, I still can't sit through the last reel without balling my head off. I will say this-as a projectionist, I use to stand in the back of the theater and ball with everyone else. It warmed my heart to hear not only the grown ups enjoying this, but the newest little ones giggling and laughing right along with them. This movie is timeless. It will NEVER lose its luster, and I thank those involved in bringing this to the TH-cam audience. If ever there was a reason to save your money and go see these events at the Bowl, I hope this submission spurred you all to spend a night under the stars and enjoy the live music and fellowship you experience at the Bowl. I was much younger then Elliot and could barely ride my bmx bicycle when I saw this great movie with my family which made every family including my own shed more then a few tear's. No movie before ET had ever manage to come close to doing that because it was a movie with so much Heart. Now years later Im 40 years old, grown up with a professional career, a semi pro athlete on the side, and a tough outer appearance that a movie like ET just would not be a first guess favorite movie but this movie STILL brings a tear or two in my eyes because of its Humanity and brings back those early years.

The last shot in this film where it holds on Elliot's face is so heartbreaking and so powerful. It's absolutely perfect. You feel everything that this young boy has been through over the course of the film and everything else before. He has essentially lost his father prior and now has to say goodbye to ET too. It's a remarkable performance from Henry Thomas. Only the stoniest of hearts wouldn't be touched by this.

We never got to see their symphonies or concertos live, but we have John Williams' Compositions.Can anyone imagine the medley possible when he's introduced to receive a new award, a Williams?Given to the best composer of the past half century. There would only be a select few to ever win such an award (2 a century). The Music Academy really should put an award like this in the works. How many are with me on this?
I was born in 95 but this, Back To The Future, Jaws, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Star Wars was my CHILDHOOD!!! Now I'm collecting the movies on my tablet in digital copy form.
This is pure childhood nostalgia for me; I close my eyes, and I am 6 years old again, riding my bike, playing in the woods with friends. This music makes me cry, ugly cry, every single time. The last two minutes are one of, if not the, most emotionally charged moments in cinema. Reading all the comments makes me happy to not be alone with this thinking.
I want to talk about 4:26 for a moment. That is one of the most amazing moments that as a performer, I have no idea how they pulled that off. The strings during that part of the piece are doing something that is extremely technical. The notes it sounds like they're playing tell me that their arms and fingers are in very unnatural positions, and the repetition of the same melody for an extended period of time must be so confusing. From 4:26-5:03, I feel like that's something a lot of people would underestimate as a long span of time, but for a piece like this with stakes as high as they are, those 39 seconds of nothing but repetition probably felt like ages just because they had to keep the most intense focus on their music and counting just so they don't lose their place. I would also like to point out that I don't see any screens that the performers are watching, so they can't see the movie. That is a big deal because E.T. was famous for being one of the only movies where the conductor was allowed to score the film and then the film would be conformed to the music (which is usually the other way around). TL;DR: This is a video of the orchestra being tortured for your viewing pleasure. Props to all of them for not missing a single note. Please support your local school's arts programs so this magic continues for more generations.

I don't think I would have been able to handle the experience of seeing this live. I have been a fan of John Williams' work since I was a kid. Back in the day when ET was a current movie in movie theaters. To sit in an audience and watch this movie on the big screen again for the first time since 1982 with Mr Williams at the helm conducting the score live in person. I know I would have been on total sensory overload. I would have been a bawling wreck through a majority of the screening. The whole experience of seeing this live would have just been too much for me to take in at once. 💜
I just can not stop crying with an overwhelming sense of both a mix between Joyous childhood 1990's Nostalgia and sheer depression at how my era has been completely lost. Absolutely amazing, John Williams, Steven Spielberg, the 1990's, My childhood. A sheerly stunning and beautiful Film Score Music Composer of the last generations and the same goes for said Film Director, an Era lost, but never forgotten, in the 21st century emersion of inhumane superficial automotons.

This is the piece of music that beat represents his genius because of the total field of emotions that are generated when you hear it and remember the film it was attached to (equal credit to Steven Spielberg for the respect he gave to John's music in the above reply.)
Everyone I've ever worked with and shot the breeze over movies prefers Duel of the Fates over this... Man, you have to be insane to say that. This is 15 minutes of John Williams dictating the ending to one of the best movies ever made, he's just going crazy here. He's even said this is his favorite score he's done. Without a doubt, the absolute top of his game, you can feel his love of doing all of this through the music, and it tells an excellent story. It's perfect, what's not to love?
I was there. Epic, surreal moment watching the Maestro John Williams perform one of his most famous masterpieces under the Blue Moon under the Hollywood sign. I was 10 in 1982 and didn't appreciate the music because the movie was so great. John Williams and Steven Spielberg together were the best. Williams music made u feel like u were there. The JAWS score alone made people afraid to get in the ocean. lol!!

Amazing that between 1977 and 1983, John Williams wrote so much incredible music: Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters, E.T., Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Jaws 2, 1941...this is probably his masterpiece.

Williams has a gift for musical pictorialism that nearly rivals Richard Strauss. For instance, one of the reasons the rhythmic figure that starts at 4:25 is so spine-tingling is because it almost literally sounds like bicycle wheels turning.

Our Symphony here in San Antonio just performed an outstanding performance as they synched the orchestra with the film last night. They were able to obtain a copy of the movie without the music. It was one of the most powerful things to witness live.
Four decades later, and that score is enough to leave you emotional. From the scene they took flight to the rainbow appearing, no other movie can recapture that magic. And if it doesn’t give you tears of joy, then you’ll the wrong person to go to. Who agrees?

I just can not stop crying with an overwhelming sense of both a mix between Joyous childhood 1990's Nostalgia and sheer depression at how my era has been completely lost.
Absolutely amazing, John Williams, Steven Spielberg, the 1990's, My childhood.
A sheerly stunning and beautiful Film Score Music Composer of the last generations and the same goes for said Film Director, an Era lost, but never forgotten, in the 21st century emersion of inhumane superficial automotons.
Everytime i watch ET i remember my childhood and the good ol days as a kid. Thank you steven spielberg and John Williams for such an incredible film and musical masterpiece!

This is the piece of music that beat represents his genius because of the total field of emotions that are generated when you hear it and remember the film it was attached to (equal credit to Steven Spielberg for the respect he gave to John's music in the above reply.)

Everyone I've ever worked with and shot the breeze over movies prefers Duel of the Fates over this... Man, you have to be insane to say that. This is 15 minutes of John Williams dictating the ending to one of the best movies ever made, he's just going crazy here. He's even said this is his favorite score he's done. Without a doubt, the absolute top of his game, you can feel his love of doing all of this through the music, and it tells an excellent story. It's perfect, what's not to love?
I saw this same thing performed in 2018 at the Hollywood Bowl by John Williams, it was such an amazing experience
I was there. Epic, surreal moment watching the Maestro John Williams perform one of his most famous masterpieces under the Blue Moon under the Hollywood sign. I actually recorded this as well but yours came out much better! Thanks for posting. BTW - I was a little surprised he did not play the Raiders main theme (he did do Marion's theme).

I was 10 in 1982 and didn't appreciate the music because the movie was so great. John Williams and Steven Spielberg together were the best. Williams music made u feel like u were there. The JAWS score alone made people afraid to get in the ocean. lol!!

Amazing that between 1977 and 1983, John Williams wrote so much incredible music: Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Close Encounters, E.T., Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Jaws 2, 1941...this is probably his masterpiece.

IMO Schindlers List is Williams' other great score, easily. But I'd rank Jaws as the other great film.

This film was brilliant in large part to the music.
Williams has a gift for musical pictorialism that nearly rivals Richard Strauss. For instance, one of the reasons the rhythmic figure that starts at 4:25 is so spine-tingling is because it almost literally sounds like bicycle wheels turning.

Our Symphony here in San Antonio just performed an outstanding performance as they synched the orchestra with the film last night. They were able to obtain a copy of the movie without the music. It was one of the most powerful things to witness live.
Four decades later, and that score is enough to leave you emotional. From the scene they took flight to the rainbow appearing, no other movie can recapture that magic. And if it doesn’t give you tears of joy, then you’ll the wrong person to go to. Who agrees?
