I tried METAL RESCUE on my 2001 ZRX1200 that had been sitting for about 6 years in my climate controlled shop. Inside of tank looked pretty rough. I used a 1500psi electric pressure washer for less than a minute on the inside. I added the METAL RESCUE at 4pm on a warm ( 85 degrees) October afternoon (2020). I left it overnight and drained it out the next morning around 9am. I was SHOCKED !! The tank was perfect inside. I am very pleased with the results. THANKS for this video !!
I followed the instructions, including rinsing out the tank with soap and hot water and this totally worked for me. My tank was completed filled with thick rust and now it's super clean. (restoring a 1971 Yamaha CT-1 175cc)

Before adding any Metal Rescue™ to your gas tank we suggest cleaning the tank to remove as much of the rust and residue as possible. Dawn dishsoap will help in removing grease and "gunk" and the use of a pressure washer as you suggest (if you do not have a pressure washer visit a coin car wash that utilizes them) will help to dislodge and remove any flakey rust or material that may be in the gas tank. such a tank expert, DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR works better than anything I have found in 50 years. Less than a buck a gallon. it takes a few hours, but White distilled vinegar is very gentle on your skin and metal tank, but harsh on rust and varnish. It will even clean the varnish out of a plastic tank in minutes, use a few nuts, bolts washers etc as agitators inside the vinegar in the tank and rock back and forth for about 10 minutes and the varnish pours right out. A final rinse with vinegar will verify the job when it pours back out clear. Lastly, put a little gasoline in the tank to rinse the vinegar residue out, slosh it around a bit and discard. the tank is now clean.

Unlike vinegar, Metal Rescue is not an acid, and will not promote rust if left on or not neutralized!

How do you dispose the dirty liquid after you clean the tank? And after rinsing with Metal Rescue and letting it dry, it's ready for use?
I made a few mistakes on my first attempt to remove rust. First of all, I don't think I removed all of the oily debris from the tank, Secondly, I only used one gallon of rust remover, and sloshed it around. Thirdly, I did the treatment in my basement, which was colder. I started over again, and used 3 gallons instead of 1. I power washed the tank and dried it before starting. The results were AMAZING!! Fully restored tank.

I vinegar to remove rust worked great but then after emptying it i rinse it with gasoline and it flash rust so quick
@@joshuacruz4046 You have to always wash steel or stainless steel parts with phosphoric or citric acid, and then painting it, or keeping it away from moisture and filled with gasoline. Acids promote rusting. But phosphoric acid and citric acid do not promote further rust, they actually form a barrier on the steel called passivization and seals it.

You are right on the money--we suggest thoroughly cleaning a gas tank BEFORE adding Metal Rescue™ to it, which allows the Metal Rescue™ to get straight to work on the rust without having to work its way through "gunk" first. If you can have a little fun (and a beer) in the process, we say all the better.
1) Final update: IT WORKS! Tank is spotless as far as I can inspect & nothing corroded or acid burned. Note to VTX ppl: immediately treat the wall & lip around the fuel port / cap area w/ rust prevention stuff to avoid flash rust from returning to pitted areas after final H2O rinse, then treat inside tank immediately w/ rust preventor sfuff after H2O is gone. Due to the design of my 5 gal VTX tank, particle removal was tideous. Remove petcock. See next post for particle removal process I used.

i plan on having the tank sandblasted and painted. should i do the metal rescue before or after that? how much dry coat is necessary for the rinse? how do you dispose of the used metal rescue and the left over dry coat (after the rinse)? how long after the dry coat should you wait before adding gas?

Just came across your channel from this video my Dad has a beautiful suzuki 250 sp red and blue its been sitting for quite awhile because he needs to still fix his busted tail light tool bag seat and I think heatshields since someone stole them and I believe his tank thing is odk how old goes 90 mph things awesome I really want to get it fixed at some point for him just to see his reaction💯💯
Does this stuff work on chrome parts without damaging the chrome?
Worked great for me and my Honda tank. Only problem is I bought the last gallon they had at the store. I had a bunch of short lengths of chain in my garage, so I put those in the tank to displace empty space in order to use less liquid, and shifted the tank around every six hours or so. Everthing came out nice.

Will it remove vinyl coatings from inside a tank that has been previously sealed? I got an old harley roadking tank that the previous owner coated with the internal sealant and I would like to remove that crappy coating. Its already starting to flake. I don't seem to know how to remove it from inside the tank.
Hi Sebastien, Metal Rescue pulls the rust off leaving the surface bare metal. It does not leave any type of coating on the metal. Your part is ready for the next step in your restoration, painting, welding, ect. If left unprotected, the rust will come back. If you aren't going use your de-rusted part right away, we suggest using our Dry Coat Rust Preventative. It dries to the touch without leaving any greasy residue, plus it will protect your part from rusting back for up to a year indoors.
How long do you leave dry coat rust preventative on the tank for?
One Question... what is the best thing to use to remove old fuel/muck/varnish? Is dishsoap the thing to use? my tank is probably only lightly rusted. It has occasionally sat for periods of time but has always in a garage. I will probably skip the ball bearings and use a pressure washer... Thanks Rich

I used apple cider vinegar for 72 hours changing the vinegar every 24hours. I still had heavy rust coating the inside of my tank. I gave metal rescue a shot and after 24 hours there was nothing left. Not a bit of rust and one shiny tank. Awesome product. I'm restoring a 30 year old dirt bike so I filled up a bin with metal rescue and started dumping rusty parts in. Now I don't have to buy new screws, bolts and clamps. I'll be using this for all my rusty restorations.

Okay, I did as u said, emptied gas completely, boiled 5 gal of water, put in my tank w/ some dawn, sloshed around, let sit for 3 hrs then drained completely. Pwr washed & drained completely, twice. Lots of rust flakes came out! Debris & water removed. Now, I am babysitting my tank at 72ºF ambient temp, indoors. Filled to the rim with 5 gal of Metal Rescue. This better work bcuz it was very expensive! VTX owners, don't pwr wash w/ pitcock intact due to delicate filter that extends into tank.

is the dry-coat going to cause any problems when mixed with gas?
When I got my cx500 it’s tank had a mess of rust and decomposed tank liner spray, so I shook it up with lots of sharp and heavy little metal pieces, to shred out the hanging on pieces of the rubbery tank liner material, then I used Metal Saver on it and it did a great job, removed only rust and no extra metal.
I put in inline fuel filter on it to be safe and its stayed clean

What stop flash rust
Update: My VTX tank has been soaking for around 4 hrs, I'm seeing the rust clear up! I did not think it had much rust but the pwr wash revealed a lot of debris at the bottom (where I can't see). The top of the tank (inside) didn't have much rust at all and whatever was there is now gone except for the wall of the fuel lip, which is submerged. The solution is still clear and clean. I'm turning my tank over to drench the lip & under wall. Wish HD gad 5 gal jug as I would've saved $35.00. SFSG.

If you hold the jug on it's side and pour it flat, you wont get the surging "glug glug glug" and it pours out faster and super smooth.

After watching your demonstration video, I found that it's so interested me to work the same as your recommendation, but I have one question, after cleaning the fuel tank then what kind of Chemical or oil to protect the rust get back again as the fuel tank must be used for holding the gasoline for the motorcycle.
Hi Sok, this is Metal Rescue, Bryan does not monitor this video. We don't recommend any sealers or oils to prevent rust from the inside of your gas tank. We don't have a ton of experience restoring motorcycles, we are experts in rust removal though! Thanks for watching, sorry we couldn't be more helpful.

I woke suggest after rust removal process is complete. Fill tank with gas and add a fuel stabilizer if it will sit for period of time. Keep it topped off whenever possible if a daily driver.

No it will not be. It will be highly unsafe.If you cannot get your SCUBA tank professionally cleaned and tested destroy it and buy another.

I have an old 1973 Hodaka Motorcycle tank that is chrome outside. Will this stuff mess up any of the outside surface or stain it? I am assuming it will not hurt it, since it's water based. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks for the great video.
Hi moparmusclecars! Thanks for watching! You are right, because Metal Rescue is a water based rust remover, it will not harm any of the outside surface or stain your motorcycle gas tank. Hi Joshua, No we just suggest a good power washing with some dish soap to get the loose and flaky rust out of the tank first. Also make sure to seal up any pin holes that may be present on the tank. Other than that, just fill it up and let it soak! Keep in mind that Metal Rescue is reusable, so when you are done, pour it back into it's container and use it on other rusty parts! Yes you can, and MrSonyDelight is right, just dry it completely. Also keep in mind that it's reusable, so make sure you strain the Metal Rescue back into it's original container, or any container with a lid on it.

Hey, thanks for the question and watching the video! The best way to prevent getting a cruddy tank is always keep clean gas in your tank. If you are not going to use your bike for awhile, then add a solvent in with your gas. Did this answer your question?
Bryan, you are forgetting something. In the winter, you must keep your tank full of fuel. If you don't you will get condensate inside that will begin to cause the rusting at the areas that aren't bathed in fuel.
How do you remove sealer if you r tank has it?

Hi TJ-Thanks for contacting us! We wouldn't recommend keeping any metals in the Metal Rescue solution that long. Typically, even more severe rust is removed in 24 hours. Sometimes, based on the metal type and amount of rust an item needs to soak a couple of days, however, we wouldn't recommend leaving it in for an entire week. The things that can happen are: 1) it could darken the metal and 2) it could remove any paint that you want to remain. Because Metal Rescue works by wet contact, it may be necessary to slightly move the item in the solution to allow for all of the metal surface to come into direct contact with the metal. (ie. the bottom of the container where the metal touches the container). We hope this information helps. can you tell me what I use to get rid of a lining that is peeling off
adorable deplorable acetone and drywall screws; you can buy a tin of Acetone at any auto parts store. Dump it in along with some screws, close the tank, shake it around for a while, voila. It will remove the lining, but any underlying rust will be exposed. Treat the rust and avoid using a tank sealer in the future.

I just ordered a 5 gallon container from Amazon... they sell it for about $90 w/FREE Shipping.... Unfortunately for me I have a big 4.8 gal fuel tank... It makes sence to spend the extra $ and top it off rather than slosh around 2 gallons, I have had the bike since new for 21 years... gonna ride it until I die... thanks for the video, I hate using sealers... they are a pain!
Hi shamanwako, Metal Rescue does not leave any type of coating behind on the metal. That being said, once you have de-rusted your gas tank you have a few options to keep the rust from coming back. 1.You can pour in some gas and swish it around the tank to soak up any residual water. 2. You can pour and swish around a gas/oil mix to coat the inside of the tank. 3. You can use our Dry Coat Rust Preventative spray, which when applied it prevents rust from coming back for up to a year!
Just seen video I have a 2006 zx6r that sat for 3 years and tank rusted inside. Do I have to remove fuel pump ? Being this bike is fuel injected it doesn’t have a petcock. Thanks
Nope! Metal Rescue won't harm the fuel pump so there's no reason to remove it.

Hi Dion de kok, thanks for watching. We scrapped out the rust and filled the tank with some nuts and bolts to get some of the loose and flaky rust out of it. You do not have to get all of the rust out before using Metal Rescue, but it is a good idea to try and get the loose and flaky rust out. That way, the Metal Rescue is only removing the hard to get rust inside your tank. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

You can filter it though a cheese cloth or a coffee filter to get the large rust particles out of it. Hi, I've got a sport's bike like tank, and what i'm having problems with is getting some kind of cork that closes the tank, without using the original tampon. Any ideas on how to do this? I would place plastic and hold it with a rubber band, but in this tank, there's no where to apply the rubber band. I hope my question was clear....I'm not sure. Can you please help?

The best way we find to clean a tank is to boil some water, pour it in the tank and add some dishwasher soap, (we use the brand dawn) you can even add some large nuts and bolts to knock some of the rust off. Let it soak in the soapy water for a few hours. Then use a power washer or a good hose to clean it out. Repeat if necessary. Once it's down to the bare rust, then use Metal Rescue to remove the rust. Hello, while Metal Rescue is safe on everything except rust, we would recommend painting the tank after using Metal Rescue. You should be able to work with an 8 oz. Dry Coat bottle after rinse and use enough to coat the inside. Workshop Hero products are biodegradable and can be disposed of in your lawn. Does it remove rust on chain, gears and pitted chrome?
Hi Garson Robitics Academy, Yes it will. Metal Rescue will remove rust on all metals except for magnesium and magnesium alloy. Keep in mind that the only thing that Metal Rescue does is remove rust, it will not fix pitted metal. After your part is derusted, you will be left with bare metal. Also, keep in mind that Metal Rescue does not harm plastic, paint, and chrome.

Hello, Metal Rescue is not an acid, therefore it doesn't need to be neutralized and you don't have to worry about it promoting rust if left on. Also, Metal Rescue pulls the rust from the metal and does not etch the metal. We have noticed that on some cast iron pieces that were heavily rusted immediately start to flash rust after being rinsed off with water. All other metals have not flash rusted. In those cases, you are dealing with unprotected metal that will start to rust again depending on the temperature and humidity. I vinegar to remove rust worked great but then after emptying it i rinse it with gasoline and it flash rust so quick
Can you leave the float in the tank as well as the petcock? The float is an electronic float.
Hello. We are not familiar with an electronic float. We do know that Metal Rescue is safe on everything except rust! That being said, if your electronic float can be submerged in a liquid, than it's more than likely safe to use with Metal Rescue. Sounds good. But how much is it per gallon? I have a 5 gallon tank. Or can I fill it half full, cap it, lay in one side for 24 hrs, flip it over to the other side and let it set for 24 more hrs. I have more time than money. What you think about that idea?
Hi Jeff, 1 gallon of Metal Rescue Rust Remover is $20-25 at Home Depot, or AutoZone. Yes you can fill it up half way for light to medium rust. Metal Rescue is reusable! 1 gallon will remove up to 1/2 pound of rust! Just make sure that you let Metal Rescue soak on the rusted area for a few hours before moving onto the next. I tried MR, wwhen it cleaned the rust out of my tank, I created a leak in the tank. So I assume the rust was all the way through that littke part of the tank. There wasn't a hole per say, but it just weeped through the rusty spot. I inspected it closely. So Metal Rescue mist likely prevented a problem later with this spot rusting through later and possibly a fire if it happened to start leaking fuel while on the road.

Metal Rescue Rust Remover Bath is sold pre-mixed, diluting it in any way many render it ineffective. You can fill the cans you reference half way. Help me please!!! I recently bought a 1982 Yamaha maxim 400xs dohc. Every time I try to start the motorcycle I have to connect the jumper cables and it usually starts but the motorcycle turns off as soon as I take the cables off or sometimes it stays running and after some time it dies. To remove rust from inside gas tank,I put a few handfulls of sand and gravel in the tank. Then duct tape it to the rear wheel of my pickup that has rear end jacked up off the ground. Crank up truck, put it in gear and let the tank tumble for about 2 beers or half hour to clean.

Any barrier between Metal Rescue and the rust, will prevent Metal Rescue from working. Metal Rescue has to be in direct contact with the rust at all times in order for it to remove it. Can you leave the fuel pump in the tank and just pour it in?
Ok. I have a motor that had a bad water pump on it. I replaced the water pump and tried to flush anything that is inside. Would It be a good idea to send this product into the radiator and run the motor???

1. You mention pressure wash tank. How do you pressure was a motorcycle tank when the largest opening is the fuel fill hole on top? Serious question.
2. Hot, soapy water sloshed around with nuts and bolts in the tank first?
3. Once done with the Metal Rescue process and rust is removed, fuel rinse complete, what is the next step before I put it back on the bike for normal use? To keep from rerust. I heard to avoid sealers and it seems the Dry Coat product prevents rust if you are storing tank or on outside. What about something to use on inner tank before normal use again?
Patrick Myers, the reason we tell you to wash out your tank is make sure there isn't any kind if barrier between the rust and Metal Rescue because Metal Resuce is not an acid. We are not mechanics and are only experts on rust removal and rust prevention as it pertains to Dry Coat. That being said, Dry Coat will prevent the rust from coming back. It is however water soluble, and will wash off when water or gas is introduced. We don't have any experience coating/sealing a gas tank, but we do hear all the time at roadshows that those are not the best solution due to the ethonal that is in gas today. Thanks. I picked up some of the Metal Rescue "Concentrate". Is there a recommended preference for mixing up a batch (IE: Distilled Water or Tap Water or Doesn't Matter)?
I have a tank that sat with no cap out in the rain for over a year from a 1982 cm 450 and Ive filled it with vinegar 3 times I had it sit for 3 days and everything time I clean it out it's nasty rust but there's still rust in there vinegar ain't working
