      @@duncanbrodie1 Exactly. Shooters back then were skeptical about a "plastic" terrorist special. No way it was equal to metal frame guns. Nor would you trust your life to them. We'd call them Fudds today.

      There's a fantastic book about the history of Glock, from the Austrian pistol trials and Gaston himself, right through to the most recent models. It went into depth about the early infamy in the public eyes, the myths, the unfounded fears, the Glock in popular culture, various trade show adventures/misadventures; I recommend it as I found it was very informative and enjoyable. I bought the Audible version myself. It's "Glock" by Paul M. Barrett.

      Where did you get a P80 from years ago?
      The civilian model was released as the Glock 17 -- or did you just mean that you have a Gen 1 G17?

    • @lon242
      @lon242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If by some chance you have a legit P80 and you live in the States, suoer cool. If you have a Glock 17 Gen 1, kinda cool. Anything after that, lame.

    • @Oberkommando
      @Oberkommando 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lon242 whats the difference? I am in the Austrian military and we now have Glock Gen4. Everyone calls them p80 since the first Glocks came into service in 1980. Even though we are using gen4 the official name is still P80

    • @lon242
      @lon242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool. Quite a few changes as far as Glocks through the generations go; the number of pins used for the frame, parts interchangeability, etc. For example, the recoil spring used in a Gen 3 is no longer compatible with a Gen 4. Gen 5 introduced a new trigger and slide stop design and is largely no longer compatible with older gen guns.
      What makes the original P80 and Glock 17 Gen 1 special in the American market is that so few of them were imported into the country before Glock really took off here with the Gen 2. An original Austrian military P80 is virtually impossible to find. You could maybe find a Glock 17 Gen 1 for ~$3000 which is kind of ridiculous. So, that's why people think this retro reissue is cool.

      @Jbog07 They were worn when we got them ,who knows when issued first,,but as i remember low serial number on them. Suddenly our magazines started fall out , they were a bit worn there ,change of parts back in service. As the logic was,wear the material down instead of much new.

      @Jbog07 Maintenancewise ,many of the guys used too much oil on them, just few drops on them held after it was cleaned . But most cleaned them twice a week or more, since we carried live ammo constantly in them .

      It also doesn't have the early narrow "pencil" barrel profile. In addition, it has a captured recoil spring, which was not introduced until a few years after the Gen 2 came out. That said, it is still neat that Glock would modify a new frame mold just to make a limited retro series.

      @@VickersTacticalLAV The 17 did around 1k rounds/week for about 20 years.. Shooting for me is what yoga is for others; I like to go to the range, clear my head, and shoot some paper targets or steel. Average shooter at best,
      The barrel was replaced twice, not once. It's seen better days, still shoots fine, but wear and tear made me retire it.

    Glock P80 & Glock 17 Gen 1 originally had a DuPont polymer grade 1 material in the frame. Glock gen 2,3,4 had the DuPont Pymer grade 2 material which is a stronger & better quality. I wonder if this new version of the Glock P80 has the newer upgraded quality DuPont polymer 2.

    They made 5,000 for initial release, 5,000 more coming in early 2021 I guess. I wonder if they will continue production of them. They would almost have to considering the investment in setting up tooling to make them. Definitely won’t just make 10,000 and quit. Although I wouldn’t mind because that would make them all the more desirable

      Your choice, I got one, shot 150 rounds through it, put on night sights, sighting those in tomorrow. If I want an investment, I'll go with gold. Glocks are to be shot.

    The magazine drop isn’t smooth, correct? I recall the first 17 having to manually extract the magazine which is mostly a military design to prevent loosing your magazine on the battlefield. Maybe I am wrong but that’s what I recall.

      The new ones have standard Gen 4 drop free mags. The OG Gen 1 Glocks were only not drop free if they were partially loaded. This is because they were not lined with metal so they would swell when loaded. When empty the mags would drop free no problems.
