There have been Asians in the U.S. since the 1500’s and in mass since the 1800’s. Redlining was also imposed on Asian Americans. My home in CA was built in the 50s and has old CCRs that say I can’t rent or sell to Asians and Blacks. Obviously that has been not the case for decades, but the relic of this document is a reminder of what was. It is incorrect to speak like “Asians” as a group just showed up yesterday in this country.
The definition of Asian includes persons that are Indian Americans from what was considered Asia Minor. Their value system is what carries them to success.
Actually the Asians are Native to the Americas. "We" crossed the Bering land bridge between 30,000-12,000 years ago. *"Some Native American languages are related to Asian languages through migration and genetic links".* Then "More than a quarter million Chinese and half a million Asian Indians were shipped to the New World between the 1840s and 1870s" They have built the railway system. And during WWII, they were stripped of their property & sent into the camps. The Rooftop Koreans in 1992. anti-Asian violence 2019... You took the land from Asians. I believe that "we" deserve the reparations.
My Jewish parents bought a house like that from an Asian family. It had no blacks, Jews or Asians written on the document. 😂😂 Now half the block is one of those races.
Acknowledging the inequality that exists in the US isn't victimhood and that expression is often used to patronize black people for calling it out. Long live Israel.
Can you point out the “systematic issues” you are referring to? Here, I’ll go first: Affirmative action is a systematic approach that actively discriminates based on race!!! Ohhh and let’s use the actual definition of racism not your self serving definitions. Thanks buddy.

"Your race is inherently racist." Wait, did you mean to say that his race was inherently racist? "No, that's what you said." OMG, if she could hear herself she would hopefully take that back.
Ironically, she was the most racist person on that panel, from the very beginning. At the start, when they were asked to define racism, as she was speaking, she turned to look and gesture at Skylar, the closest white person to her that wasn't the host. Sickening behavior.
As Asian American. Why vote for Democrats? I want my kids to have the same chances to get into the university of their choice regardless of their ethnicity. I want my mom to walk downtown in my city I was born in without being mugged. I want to protect the business I started from the ground. Protect the wealth I worked so hard for. So one day I can pass it down to my children.
"Have we reached the ultimate stage of absurdity where some people are held responsible for things that happened before they were born, while other people are not held responsible for what they themselves are doing today?" -Dr Thomas Sowell
Not so absurd. Often time in court families and institutions are having to pay out for something that happened generations before. We, including descendants of slaves tax dollars pay the Native tribes billions of dollars each year. That is clearly inherited debt being paid for people who are the descendants of dead folks and past actions.
@@operationreciprocity8446 That “stage” has always been present/reached. Families punished (executed) for conduct of a parent has been common throughout history. It reached its most extensive application when Nazis killed 7 million Jews during WWII. Societies had moved away from this sort of practice certainly before Nazi Germany reverted to it. Certainly though, there are some societies who still do so. North Korea clearly, some claim China also, but I doubt those 2 are the only ones.
I’m a black woman and I’m so sick of people throwing that word around so easily. They don’t know nor have they ever seen TRUE racism. The word lacks significance because at this point they call everything racist.
They also continue to ignore that the West was the first to abolish slavery. AND more importantly there are still 29 countries TODAY that still have legalized slavery. But instead of focusing on that we just continue to harp on our past instead of saving those suffering from slavery TODAY!

@@Deehoff2 No you don’t need a green book to get around. Will you run into racist people at least once in your life as a black person? Maybe or maybe not. But it’s not common and racist people have little to no effect on your life like in the 1930s, today they’re annoying at most. I’ve worked in multiple places where I was the only black person in the building in predominantly white areas but I didn’t experience racism.
Thomas Sowell's three magic questions for digesting the effectiveness of policy are very helpful here: Compared to what? At what cost? What evidence do you have? Cleans it all right up...quick.
While I somewhat agree with Sowell’s preposition, it posits a few flaws. “Compared to what?” The historical context or not doing anything. “At what cost?” Does he mean monetarily, socially, legally? “Your evidence?” You can point out past occurrences and norms and make an allegory for similar situations.
lol this dumb woman says “I’m going with the traditional definition” then proceeds to go with the definition that only became popular a few years ago. Absolute liar.
How many years ago is 1964? exactly 60. The statements against Hmoung people in Wisconsin, who were resettled there after terrible persecution by Communist North Vietnamese, are being disrespected in this discussion. They don't even come knowing English as first language. I lived in Milwaukee for 2 years after growing up in Madison. This attitude in Milwaukee is decades old. Unbelievable hypocrisy.
@@robertridley9279 Racism is prejudice based on race. Thats the definition. It’s been that way for decades. Your 20 year old definition created by radicals won’t change the real definition.
@@robertridley9279 Well thats a terrible definition in the 90s too. Power isn't a requirement of being Racist. And your argument will always be, A person has the right to hate their oppressor without being Racist. But no. That's just an excuse to be just as hateful and evil. And it leads to not having a Rational View of who's oppressing them. Or Being Paranoid of being Oppressed all the time. So it's racism either way. It's Prejudice and Bigotry. Yeah, he was easily the best. Obviously a couple of them were super entrenched in their ideology. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, he was terrified and way too subtle. I wish the moderator Ben or him would’ve had the guts to call out some of the statements made. Where they just made statements that were broadas absolute facts but in no way, supported those statements to prove they were factual.
I am flabbergasted that she said she didn’t believe in the Golden Rule, and proceeds to refine her opinion to be “get to know me, and learn how I want you to treat me”, which essentially IMHO means “coddling” of persons, rather than a general respect for all equally. I’ve seen many videos of women, of all races, call themselves “Queens” (with a capital letter). Let’s be reminded that we don’t have Royalty in this country, either. Although many celebrities may believe that they are. Hollywood and the music industry are losing a lot of this regard (adoration) as we are learning so much of their evil deeds and their sanctimonious lecturing of regular people in many ways, including how to vote. So, when someone says “treat me as I want to be treated”, they are asking for preferential treatment, rather than common courtesy that everyone deserves
I’m conservative, but cmon.. you have a responsibility to platform more intelligent people pushing for DEI positions. That women is so dumb.. it just makes that position look bad.
The women weren't dumb, but there needed to be people more informed about the Harvard case. The white guy in glasses was telling obvious lies about Asians being discriminated against that could be easily disproven by someone following the case.
@robertridley9279 He was illustrating how In this case where GPA, SAT, plus, not to mention personal statement superceded the qualifications of admitted minority students, implying the university served to meet a quota despite less qualificatiin and setting aside a qualified person.
Robert, you can find the Students for Fair Admissions decision with a simple Google search. It goes on at length about the harm to Asians. Justice Gorsuch wrote a separate concurring opinion that was basically all about the harm to Asians.
@@robertridley9279It wasn't the prevalent definition in any of my circles until fairly recently but I definitely remember hearing it articulated in the first season of MTV's The Real World when Julie and Kevin got into it on the sidewalk 😂
@@robertridley9279 racism has nothing to do with power....a homeless man with absolutely nothing can be the most racist person you've ever met....is he actually racist though by your definition?
I am disappointed at the constant interruptions. Hardly anyone got to finish a sentence before being interrupted by either of the two women. I feel like the substance of the conversation could have been helped by defining more of the core concern. It was shocking to me that one woman basically said that other minorities don’t matter because they “didn’t build the country”. The view of racism she was purporting is very narrow.
Moderator, . .culturally, some women got loud here, but don't let that be intimidating. When responding, match the level, because it's a cultural thing, and so that you can moderate and get your comment through.
One of the early points of note in this debate is the definition of racism. Racism for years meant judging people by their race or the color or their skin. This meant any person because judging or discriminating against anyone used to be seen as bad thing. Then in 2020 it was changed to include this idea of power and privilege. Why would you change a definition to allow some people to be judged based off the color of their skin? This effectively allows people to judge others because if they supposedly don’t have privilege they can get away with saying someone is inherently bad because of how they look. This was a bad change and only serves to divide people.
You should google the Merriam Webster definition. Do you think no “serious” person adopted this? While I may think Kamala is not a very serious candidate her so called “opportunity economy” is just equity thinly veiled. The progressive left certainly thinks this is the definition too.
Exactly. Furthermore, a racist person from the US doesn’t cease to be so if he moves to Nigeria. Nor does a racist Nigerian cease to be racist when he moves to the US. It preposterous and an obvious trick, as you say, to encourage or at the very least de-stigmatize anti White, Asian and Jewish racism.
I think you need to also consider that races are different. Should you judge an individal by one characteristic? No, but is it racist to say that whites, as a group, are less intelligent than asians? This is objectively true, we shouldnt punish people for telling the truth
I am obviously still working through this episode but I am sick and tired of hearing awful and/or ignorant people try to play word games or muddy the waters to justify what amounts to their own goal of institutional racism. These people are such hypocrites and frankly, they seem to have very few arguments worthy of any consideration. We need to stop being nice and acting like they have a legitimate foundation for their belief in DEI. They do not. By all means, let them, give their arguments and let people hear them but they have had years to prove their case and it is weak and undeserving of the same respect we would give a cogent argument made in good faith.
You’re an actual racist and you should be ashamed. You’re on here advocating for systemic racism (DEI) so you need to get off your high horse. You’re not a moral person.
@ Economic color-blind policy. If you have social programs to target those with lower socioeconomic status then you still disproportionately help African American families.
@@Aureilius2112 But how does that deal with the issue of racism? There are racists at every level in society, so how does color-blindness create a solution for that? You can tell black people to not see color all day, but there will always be someone in our way reminding us and discriminating against us, how are we addressing those people? And what about correcting laws and policies that have been put in place that disproportionately affects black people and people of color? Have you heard of the school to prison pipeline? I feel like you all have a very one-dimensional view as to what racism is and how it actually works in our society. Of course that’d be the case because you’re not black, so you’ll never experience it first hand, but surely you’re capable to putting yourself in someone else’s shoes to see from different perspectives…. You just have to want to do so.
@ so you say there is racism at every level of government, I disagree. I’ll be open and give you the opportunity to tell me what racism there is at every level because I just don’t see what you see.
It's true that not everyone answers the census, so you can't base any stats off of just the census. You would need some sort of representative sampling.

1) you have individuals here whose whole purpose is singular: to talk about racism. 2) They have zero incentive to actually fix racism. 3) Any attempt to actually "fix" racism is against their goals. 4) It behooves them to reduce everything and anything to racism because it directly benefits them. These DEI pimps are ridiculous.

It's really disappointing that the liberal side today came without good intentions. They did not listen or engage in the conversation. They simply labeled the other side as wrong and decided data wasn't accurate because it didn't help their perspective bias. Please put more effort into getting more honest people to represent the liberals.
Those people are not liberals. Liberals really actually by definition judge people by the content of their characters. It’s about the individual that’s one of the core definitions of liberalism and ideas from the enlightenment. Those people are “leftists“ Please I beg you don’t conflate those words. At some point left and liberal became one, but I think we can all agree in this thread. Or maybe we can but at least a lot of us can that people on the left are definitely often the opposite of liberal. I am a flaming liberal Which I think at this point might mean I’m on the right side of the political aisle. I believe intensely in freedom of speech. Individual liberties. Property rights. Etc.. Those are absolutely core liberal values. Please these people don’t get that word. I know it’s just syntax and semantics, but it actually does mean something. Left does not equal liberal.

That warped version of the golden rule is already in practice in the medical field, unfortunately. It must come from the idea that there's no objective morality, just a bunch of random opinions and perspectives vying for recognition.
The issue with equal representation as a measure for equality is you eliminate cultural influence. Not every person WANTS or is interested in the same things equally. There aren't many women in skyscraper / ironworker jobs but no one thinks that is discrimination because most women DON'T want those crazy dangerous jobs. Same can be true with racial representation.
I watched three of these and I hope The Free Press continues this. What’s so obvious is that this is not happening enough. Someone said this at the end of the Florida one-the two sides are using different vocabularies. This continues across the round tables. But you can also hear how people’s assumptions and beliefs-relatively new ones-have never been questioned in earnest. I feel like the more that this type of exchange is repeated, the better of a chance we have in getting there
I think that was a great discussion, overall. I have to vehemently disagree with one of the first statements. Home loans are not withheld from ANY race. I work in real estate, and Loan Officers care about lining their pockets. They’ll take anyone’s $$. You don’t even have to disclose your race at anytime during the loan process, which is almost 100% electronically done. That’s under equal credit opportunity act and it’s been in effect since 1974.

The topic WAS racism. Open and honest conversations open doors for all. It is when you close up just because "you dont want to talk about it or hear it anymore" that people can run their own narrative. We cannot just hand people books and think that they will grow into conscience thought by talking to themselves. There is no victim mentality in learning history. We as Americans cannot afford to have naive children. My friend has biracial boys....the youngest is 2...they get the worst looks from some of the older generation. From Frederick Douglass's final speech: "I have a word now upon another subject, and what I have to say may be more useful than palatable. That subject is the talk now so generally prevailing about races and race lines. I have no hesitation in telling you that I think the colored people and their friends make a great mistake in saying so much of race and color. I know no such basis for the claims of justice. I know no such motive for efforts at self-improvement. In this race-way they put the emphasis in the wrong place. I do now and always have attached more importance to manhood than to mere kinship or identity with any variety of the human family. RACE, in the popular sense, is narrow; humanity is broad. The one is special; the other is universal. The one is transient; the other permanent. In the essential dignity of man as man, I find all necessary incentives and aspirations to a useful and noble life. Man is broad enough and high enough as a platform for you and me and all of us. The colored people of this country should advance to the high position of the Constitution of the country. The Constitution makes no distinction on account of race or color, and they should make none. We hear, since emancipation, much said by our modern colored leaders in commendation of race pride, race love, race effort, race superiority, race men, and the like. One man is praised for being a race man and another is condemned for not being a race man. In all this talk of race, the motive may be good, but the method is bad. It is an effort to cast out Satan by Beelzebub. The evils which are now crushing the negro to earth have their root and sap, their force and mainspring, in this narrow spirit of race and color, and the negro has no more right to excuse and foster it than have men of any other race." - Frederick Douglass, Blessings of Liberty and Education, 1892

The moderator’s “census data” ranking doesn’t make sense in a couple ways: 1- Lebanese, Syrians, Levantine Arabs generally are instructed to report as Caucasian on U.S. Census Forms. (Though I do think this is changing in the next census. - finally). This has been the case since the 1950s I think. Prior to that, they were NOT considered Caucasian under federal immigration & census laws. As an aside, Lebanese/Syrians were not allowed to sit on juries in Wisconsin until a legal case in the 1950s. Moreover, his ranking list includes ethnicities nationwide, but then goes to Appalachian whites? I have no doubt they are poorer, but why would a regional group be compared to other races/ethnicities nationally. It implies to me that the moderator’s list may be data from multiple ranked lists based on different types of demographic data that have been munged together. So, the woman in the middle has a point, but being a bit too strident in it - and using it as an excuse to not recognize the central points: 1-How can dark skinned Indians succeed in a society that is so white and racist ? 2- Did Lebanese immigrants who most often came to US with literally nothing in the 1920s-1960s, who were not considered Caucasian by law, succeed simply because their skin was a lighter ? “Lighter” but as is said amongst them/us: “too light to hang with the black folks & too dark to hang with the white folks.”
I think the 2 women forget to include racism against native Indians and native Mexican people ( people who lived in southern areas such as Texas before it was acquired by the U.S. ) those native or indigenous people have been discriminated against for years. My problem with any resent immigrant is that because they have been “ vetted “by the U.S. government , they are more likely to get hired for government jobs which pay more and have medical benefits. I think the government should reach out to poor citizens in rural areas and poor citizens in big cities to give them the opportunity to be vetted to qualify for government jobs such as working for an airport or in the maritime industry.

As an Asian American watching this just confirms my belief that we are politically invisible and most of our interests are sidelined by everybody. Neither side, black or white or democrat or republicans are our allies or even remembers we exist even though we make up 6-7% of the population. Affirmative action allows minorities who score lower or have lower gpa's to have a place while telling people with higher gpa's they aren't accepted because they aren't minority enough. This negatively affects minorities by putting people in places who don't have the knowledge they would have if the schools instead focused on getting the students the same amount of schooling and access to materials. Our illiteracy rate is rising in this country because of it.

As a Black Studies Professor these kinds of conversations get on my ever lasting nerves.. THe Free Press is far more interested in having a conversation that is ENTERTAINING as opposed to one that is productive. You have panelist that tell you upfront that they don't know the history of race in America, or that they don't have specific examples of systemic and structural racism with data. So that is why we can have a lawyer on the panel talk about discrimination in Harvard admissions policies without ever having to talk about the structure of public education in this country, which is largely funded by local property taxes, so if poorer communities pay less in taxes because of the value of their homes, then their schools receive less dollars causing an lack of education equity for those students , and if those houses where those students live are in historically redlined districts then that means their is little to no investment in those communities to help increase the value of those properties so those students can then receive greater resources, and if those communities were redlined because the majority of people are Black then we have just given an idea of structures and systems that begin with the problem of RACE in America that says what is your fix when those students seek admission to HARVARD but didn't have an equitable education as Asian immigrants who come to this country with a different experience. But all of this could have been better addressed if you would have actually INCLUDED IN THE CONVERSATION A BLACK SCHOLAR WHOSE ACADEMIC WORK FOCUSES ON RACE IN AMERICA.. But this feels like you don't do that because it is easier to construct a conversation that highlights more of what people don't know as opposed to getting those that do know so that those who listen can become at least marginally more informed! This is why racism continues.. So this isn't then a real debate.. it is just arguing.. and stop using Martin Luther King to justify your RACISM.. Because if you wish to fully understand KING you would not only think about his 1963 Speech in Washington DC but his later Speeches and WRITINGS in 1967 and 1968 where he says I see that my dreams has thus become a nightmare.. You would talk about when KING highlights the disparity in Land Grants and other FEDERAL programs that gave WHITE people access to government jobs, contracts, and benefits that legally left BLACK people out.. which is why KING said in that speech WE ARE NOW NEEDING TO GO TO WASHINGTON TO GET OUR CHECK.. But needless to say they ( white man) killed him less than a year after that.. ! #TheStruggleContinues
School funding in the US is only partially funded by local property taxes. Anyway, your point is that this means blacks get less than whites, but this isn't true. Blacks actually get more in school funding, per student, than whites do. This has been true since the 80s. See Richwine 2011.
This wasn't edifying with some exceptions. Where's Coleman Hughes? 🙃 "Why are we trying to solve the Asian issue before we solve the black/white issue?" One of the early points of note in this debate is the definition of racism.
It was never actually changed. People entrenched in an ideology erroneously claimed this but no serious person actually adopted it.
what? are you inferring how ELITES co-opt any movement that challenges their reality?

From Frederick Douglass's final speech:
"I have a word now upon another subject, and what I have to say may be more useful than palatable.
The evils which are now crushing the negro to earth have their root and sap, their force and mainspring, in this narrow spirit of race and color, and the negro has no more right to excuse and foster it than have men of any other race."

So, the woman in the middle has a point, but being a bit too strident in it - and using it as an excuse to not recognize the central points:
1-How can dark skinned Indians succeed in a society that is so white and racist ?
2- Did Lebanese immigrants who most often came to US with literally nothing in the 1920s-1960s, who were not considered Caucasian by law, succeed simply because their skin was a lighter ?
“Lighter” but as is said amongst them/us: “too light to hang with the black folks & too dark to hang with the white folks.”
Thank you for your great job !
A great discussion!
Skylar’s hands were shaking like mad
Truly embarrassing, especially the two women sitting in between Ben and the one male participant, who did yeoman's work staying calm and focused in the face of some real stupidity and, frankly, rudeness. Definitely not the best of what has otherwise been a great series.
Do you mean the black women? It's ok, you can say it.
@@jayl271322 lol. Yes I mean the black women.
What an exhausting session 😂
55 minutes of raw colorblind racism.
Her masters is a perfect example of DEI
These woke people apparently cannot understand basic sentencing. It is outstanding. Eight minutes in and i have to stop due to severe cringe...
I know. It’s more just the fact that there was no pushback from the moderator or any of the other participants. I made it through most of it, but you’re right it was brutal because it just was not robust intelligence debate
One side was dominating and not throwing out intelligent statements. And the other side was trying to be too polite to the point of not throwing in cogent counter arguments against the unintelligence statements being lobbied.
@@JoshYenneya because if they pushed back they would of been labeled racist lol
How can you watch this without coming away just a little more angry with the position of the race hustlers? Why can’t we be honest? F the kid gloves. Sick of it.
I know it’s sad. I think everyone was just so wanting to be too polite to these women they were spewing absolute crap just not intellectual debate have absolutely nothing to do with race. Other than people are just being differential because they didn’t want to appear racist or impolite to them. So they let them absolutely dominate the entire “discussion” with stupid stupid arguments
Minority groups need to be seen at a micro level, and what one will find as a correlate to educational success is value system where education is top priority. This value motivates one to overcome adversity. It has also been noted that religious & family oriented cultures tend to do better in education than others when provided opportunity in the USA.
Can’t have this conversation if you’re not willing to offend people.
I have an honest question: How can the two ladies of color be so sure having faced racism and not weightism? Also, i noticed that they avoided eye contact with the gentleman with the grey suit. That's a display of disrespect and doen't make anyone appear more sympathetic.
They didn't even understand the points he was making
The black ladies were an embarrassment.
Welp... 95 percent chance they vote Democrat so no one cares what they think. Republicans or Democrats. They couldn't care less because their vote goes blue. So why bother
It seems very hard for black people to accept that other races can also be American.
Everybody should teach their kids how to act and what to do when they get pulled over! I taught my son the same exact thing as these ladies
If racism were truly apparent..this conversation would not hapen.
I see who’s racist in this video
Who ?
As an Asian American watching this just confirms my belief that we are politically invisible and most of our interests are sidelined by everybody. Neither side, black or white or democrat or republicans are our allies or even remembers we exist even though we make up 6-7% of the population. A lot of asians protested for George Floyd during 2020-2021 and it's ironic the person who shit on us out of nowhere was that black lady. I think Asians, Hispanics and all "others" should just form our own party and vote for our own interests because there's not a lot of common ground here.
God I'm so sick of hearing about race. The only people that honestly think about race- are ones that want to make excuses
“They gotta fat check!” Gimme so easily bought.
The GOP ethos is it must benefit ALL Americans. We don’t do Grouping
I cant believe they wont watch it back and feel embarrassed.
Sick of these people who have been given every advantage for over 60 years making excuses for their CONTINUED FAILURES.
It’s three against the one woman in red.
Preach and teach!
Would your argument be any different if Malcolm X had murdered MLK? After all he hated MLK just as much as James Earl Ray.
School funding in the US is only partially funded by local property taxes. Anyway, your point is that this means blacks get less than whites, but this isn't true. Blacks actually get more in school funding, per student, than whites do. This has been true since the 80s. See Richwine 2011.
This. right. here.! Why isn't this at the top of these other stupid comments??
TALK BOUT IT! I will say tho is them black women ATE
This is terrible. Could not watch in full. Oh well.
if she looked at the research about modern racism from Duke University she would be in trouble
Congress did that not Donald Trump.
Welcome to the pity party!
This wasn't edifying with some exceptions.
Where's Coleman Hughes? 🙃
"Why are we trying to solve the Asian issue before we solve the black/white issue?" ( paraphrasing)
Lady, because we are all Americans. No one says all blacks are OK. Discriminating against a specific ( arbitray, Asian for example) race doesn't help blacks, doesn't help anyone. Constitution much?
Skylar is on the ball.
BLACKS ARE NOT BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST! Why is it so hard to see reality?!
