Watch the Golf Sidekick Break 100 videos!!!! As a beginner you are not playing against Par. You should be playing for bogey. Par 4 you should be on in 3 and 2 putt for a 5. That 5 is really your par. Bogey golf should putt you at 90 for par 72 course. So think of GIR for par 3 as on in 2, par 4 on in 3, par 5 on in 4. If you can do that and 2 putt you are at 90. Don't put the pressure on yourself to hit a GIR against Par as you shouldn't be playing against par yet in your mind. This really helped me in the beginning as it made me relax knowing I didn't need a GIR to break 100 or even 90.

Yep very good point, I very rarely hit a G.I.R, I would say the guy in the video is around a 36 handicapper, he could allow him self 3 shots into a green on a par 3, 2 putt and still get his "net" par 4 shots into a par 4, 5 shots into a par 5, I think as a high handicapper u gotta play to your handicap and be happy about it when u do, will keep your head straight and suddenly your find yourself beating your handicap, maybe sneaking in a "gross" par or 2 on the course and breaking 100

I can 100% agree that the gs breaking 100 and 90 vids are choc full of wisdom for high handicap golfers. Technique obviously helps but follow those simple principles and you will score better.
Keep it in play at all times
      Giotg
      Practice putting
When I actually started doing those I went from shooting 120ish to breaking 100 instantly and I can now shoot under 90 without being a brilliant ball striker.

I love your honesty and positive attitude. As a 3 handicap, I hit plenty of bad shots - trust me. However, what saves me is my short game and putting. If you work on that, you will see a massive improvement in your game/scores and the rest will come with time and practice. One of the beautiful things about this game is that we all start off shooting high numbers when we begin. The fact that we do that leaves the ability to make huge strides when we start to get better. Good luck at stay with it.

I feel your pain, I was getting really good and then just before the end of summer I lost all my iron shots, I used to be able to pull out my 7 or 5 and know I'll hit a half decent shot but I always manage to shank them now. Used to be able to walk up to the ball and just hit it but now I'm hesitating. Started getting them back but anything higher than an 8 iron and it's who knows which direction it's ganna go. Keep up the grind, summer soon so the warm weather will have you playing better. (That's what I'm hoping for in my case 😂)

Watching from Canada, we've all been there friend and anyone who is as dedicated as you are can't go wrong. I've been taking lessons and taking my game more seriously for about a year, year and a half. I've come a long way in that time and if there is one tip I would say helped me more than any other it would be this; The harder you try, the worse you play. Learning to golf is very much like learning a dance, you can't be wooden or too deliberate. Try to stay as relaxed as you can, almost as though you were hitting the ball without caring where it goes lol. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!!

@@itsjustgolf I'd endorse the loosen up advice above. I'll add some pragmatism.; Your favourite club should be an 8/9 iron, not a 5. You want a decent, massively consistently straight shot. If you *know* you can hit it out of rough, so much the better. That's it! No disasters, no stress = better scoring. Obviously you can hit a ball well. Why not do it more?
Once you're agitating to hit 7 from there give it a go occasionally
I can't excuse your putting in any way. Don't wait till spring. I bet you haven't already knocked in 100 from 12-18 inches. If I'm wrong I apologise (so should you, for not being better). I've seen a couple of worse putters than you, but they're both miles ahead, now.
Good luck! What's your handicap?(whatever it is; there's shed loads to take off)

the absolute definition of high handicap golf there, pal. Some days you gotta just smile and move on and conditions are still really hard at the minute so no reason to worry. At this standard, making your best shot better doesn't make a blind bit of difference, it's cutting out the worst tops, fats and tree trouble that starts to make a big difference and a lot of that will come with practice and just playing.

Hey man, sorry about the struggles. Golf is just so unpredictable. A couple of things I noticed from the lessons I took this winter: you slice is from your swing path, it is an out to in and you most like hit the ball with a wide open face. I can’t see your grip but you might have to make it “stronger” to help close that face. If you can changed your swing path to in to out with a closed face, you’ll produce a nice draw. This takes a lot of practice but if you can rent time on a launch monitor, it will do wonders vs just going to the range and slamming a bucket of balls aimlessly.

Your problem stems mainly from a massively out to in swing path. You set up closed but then swing over the top . It's steep and produces weak shots that either leak right or become a pull to the left of you shut the face. Take a look at the Jim Venetos method of swinging the club. As you set up closed anyway you shouldn't find it that hard to adjust to. You will quickly clear up your inconsistency and improve ball striking immediately.

@@itsjustgolf give it a go. You can then move on from worrying about your long game and focus on your short game. Handicap will come down quickly. Using the Venetos method I get solid contact and can then focus on chipping and putting. Currently off 9.8 but my goal is to get down to 5 in 2024. I did shoot 74 twice in 2023 so Venetos definitely works. I'm no super athlete either, I'm 49 with a dodgy knee and back. If I can do it then anyone can.

You should dump your driver until you can break 100 on a regular basis. I was out recently teeing off practically every hole with a hybrid that only goes about 150 yards but pretty straight. the bonus to this tacic is you use the same club for nearly every other shot on the fairway too. scored an 88.

      @conan6939 ปีที่แล้ว

@@itsjustgolf Yeah i had the same problems with the driver. You might pull off a miracle shot once in a blue moon where it might go close to 250 but realistically I was never going straight or even over 150 the majority of the time. I just changed the mindset and breaking 100 came very easy then. My plan is basically break every par 4 into 3 shots where you can get on to putt and then set up the first putt, then tap it in. Bogey and you're laughing. Keep that up for 18 holes and you'll break 90 nevermind 100. A club that goes straight is more important than distance for a beginer. Even if it only goes 120 yards that will still get you on most par 4's in 3 shots.
look over your course before you start too. and divide all the par 4's by 3 and see how easy it is to get on 3.

  • @coachplays
    @coachplays ปีที่แล้ว +1

One way to instantly improve your score is to think about breaking the holes up. So if you've got a 364 yard par 4 that could be, two 7 irons and a 60 yard pitch, or three 9 irons. Clubs you're going to be way more consistent and comfortable hitting and you can still get on the green in 3-4 shots. Keep up the grind pal.

I've only just found your channel and I feel your pain. It's such a frustrating sport to learn and being from a rugby background I struggled at 1st. Its hard when you're the only one responsible for how you score! 🤣 I started having lessons in September last year. Have you tried any? I'm being taught to just take my back swing to an L shape and not to swing too full until I improve. Concentrating more on technique and making sure that I return the club face square at impact. I'm 9 lessons in now and am hitting the ball really well and I really believe its through the lessons. Seeing my swing analysed as a beginner really helped me. Just stuck to lessons and the range through the winter as I was advised to stay off the course while the weather was bad and start once the spring comes. I think that was good advice as I'll be more ready for playing then. Some might disagree. Anyway, from a fellow Brit good luck. You've got a new follower. 👍

Just some quick suggestions after viewing for the first time, your over the top (in to out) swing path is the cause of your pull left and slice right drives, also doesn’t help with the irons. For putting, your back stroke and forward stroke should be roughly the same pace, it seems you accelerate far too much on the forward stroke which takes any consistency out of your pace control

Keep at it bro, you will get better. And you’re not getting any loft on your iron long shots. Try taking your long irons of the back foot, so your a bit in front of the ball. You will strike it better and get that extra loft. Good luck buddy.

Hello, you have a great swing with good rotation on the back swing. Your issue is with your down swing, your pulling your arms down to initiate your down swing, trying turning your lower hips first which will allow you to shallow your club first. Hope this helps.

Top tip , not sure if you know but your alignment is out, your set up is aiming well right of target and to correct it you are pulling across the ball to the left which will make you pull badly left or hit a slice , to correct put a club on the floor on target line and set up from there 😉

Your swing does not look too bad. There is potential there. You get cramped up in the transition because you take the club back too much to the inside. Try take the club back straight. It will feel outside to you at first. You want the club to be dropping a little inside your swing plane when you transition into your downswing, but because you are aiming too far right your subconscious intervenes… dropping the club inside feel wrong if you aim that far right. Try opening your stance a bit, aiming more left. Perhaps look at some Lee Trevino swings, or Fred Couples. Aiming a little left (left edge of the fairway or green) will promote you taking the club back straighter and not so much to the inside, which leave you no room really to drop club inside. And then just swing naturally down the line. Here is Fred Couples (simple) swing thoughts: take club back slowly (straight down the ball to target line), make a full turn (don’t sway, turn as if your standing in a barrel), clear your hips (slight and gentle movement in coordination with your weight shifting left), swing the club down the line (the clearing of your hips will automatically cause the club to drop inside the line) release past the ball (as your weight continues to shift all to the left side). You will probably find it feels more natural to aim left and will allow you to swing the club more naturally. About the putting let the club swing more as if it is a pendulum (like that in an old grandfather clock, try feel the momentum of the pendulum, it will add consistency to your putting stroke in terms of feel. You just then vary the length of the stroke (how far the pendulum swings back and forth) to hit it shorter or further. All it requires is fairly quiet hands and arms and a gentle rocking of the shoulders (you do this already fairly well - concentrate on feeling the pendulum - the weight of the club swinging. In no time, with a bit of practice on the greens, you’ll be putting well. Anyway thanks for sharing and don’t loose heart. Golf can be a difficult game. Try make it more natural. More simple. Just let the club swing down the line (try feel the momentum of the club as both gravity and the centrifugal forces of you turning your hips and shifting your weight interact with it). Make your swing more about feel and momentum than technique. Try incorporate the basics of the swing as naturally to you as possible. There are many ways to swing a golf club. I just think an open stance promotes a better opportunity to make a natural free flowing swing. Above all don’t forget to Enjoy your time on the course. Again thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing you share more rounds.

    Just thinking.
On 1st tee shot, if ball was teed about 1/2 ball diameter lower than you played it, maybe it would have been easier for you to make a more efficient forward swing plane thru the ball? Try substituting a 3W instead of driver. Tee the ball so the bottom edge of the ball is 2mm above the grass. Play the shot exactly as if it was on an ideal lie in the fairway. Dont play for max yards but a consistent shot shape (on this shot and for most golfers including me it's a low hanging baby fade that rolls out on the fairway but that doesn't usually run into the right rough).
In general, I'm just thinking, maybe bag just a 3W, 7W, 5i, 7i, 9i, GW, SW and putter. Then you can play shots with 60% swing power and 80% swing power. So, the 60% power shots are good practice for greater accuracy of ball contact on a specific clubhead groove, to make ball spin and trajectory more consistent.
Just thinking, maybe try different style of putters, putter lengths and putter swingweights. btw, im an avid golfer who has been golfing on and off and in love with golf since 1965.

Shit happens as a new golfer, I feel your pain but you're a new golfer at the hardest time of the year so don't beat yourself up. As you mentioned practice your putting and that's going to take a lot of score off. If its the score you're worried about I'd stop driving and use your 5 iron and manage the course better, you lost a lot of shots from your tee which I think will help build your confidence and put you in a better headspace. Use the range to get that under control and come summer you'll be laughing.

@@itsjustgolf I only suggested it because I'm in such a similar position, I couldn't break 100 because of lost tee shots, dropped balls or having an approach yo the green from a crap lie. I started playing my 5 iron which I can hit good distance to be honest and hitting fairways so much more made me confident and gave me much better shots in. I think like me we all try and get to the green in regulation but in reality we over do it and make a mess of it lol. Your chipping and your irons looked the best bit so you need to give yourself those opportunities. When I did this I went from regular 105 to 110 scores down to low 90s. I practiced my driver and 3 wood with a couple of lessons and now hit 85 to 90 pretty commonly. Good luck man looking forward to watching you progress.

Just some personal observations on your swing..
Positives: the setup looks decent, and the tempo is very good and consistent which is the sign of a good natural player. You don't rush the down swing for instance which a lot of amateurs do, particularly on pressure shots.
Negatives: you've a classic so called 'over the top' swing, as I'm sure you're probably already aware. This not only means all your shots can only go either left to right or drastic hooks left, but also leads to inconsistencies and is also causing you to early hip extend, as you'll see for example if you pause at 13:01. This can ultimately lead to injury if you're not careful.
To fix it, you'll need to reprogram your swing (to use a term), so that the driving forces are coming from the lower body, ie the legs and hips, and the upper body (especially hands and arms) is just passive and loose and simply follows behind the lower body. I can see from your swing that the driving forces are coming from the upper body which is causing the over the top, early hip extension, flipping etc. So for instance, the hands and arms are trying to swing the club when they should literally be doing almost nothing. The hands and arms should be rotating in a circular arc around your spine, not because they are trying to, but because your feet, legs, hips and upper torso are causing a rotational movement causing your spine to rotate and ultimately causing your arms, hands and the club to rotate around the spine.
I don't know how tight you grip your club? But if you try holding it very loosely as if you are holding a hamster and then hold it even lighter than that, it might feel strange at first but this will help get rid of the hand/arm driven habits.
But anyway, hope it works out well for you.

    • @itsjustgolf

Hi Danny, thanks for leaving a comment and good feedback. I really appreciate it.
Strangely enough on my last lesson we have been working on holding the club looser. Strange at first but can see the logic behind it as with a tighter grip, you're more likely to hack/whack the ball than naturally swing 🏌‍♂️👍

What this guy says is spot on. A couple of tiny tweaks can make a huge difference. 1) Driver...very steep on the backswing. Swing around the body and not high up in air. As a practice drill try to keep your hands no higher than your shoulders at top of backswing. This helps you come in shallow and swoop up on the ball. 2) Irons...similar to Driver, lower the hands a touch to get more shallow. Say chin/mouth high at top of swing. Then to help prevent coming 'over the top' as you transition to downswing feel like you are freezing your trail arm elbow angle (at circa 90 degrees), pull it down towards your belt whilst rotating through the swing. This helps encourage the hips to start the downswing rather than the arms. If this makes no sense at all it is basically the same natural action you'd use to skim a stone with your trail arm. This concept can be applied to both iron and Driver. Hope it helps, keep going.

Next time you go out, really try to manage your expectations. The best player on tour hits 6/10 fairways, and the best iron player hits it to 18 feet from the pin from 175 out on average.
Secondly, really try to focus on the target. Let any mechanical swing thoughts go, they will absolutely destroy your golf swing. Leave the mechanics for practice. Pick your target, commit to your target, and swing.
Only spend 1 to 2 seconds MAX over the golf ball. Any longer than that and your target will go away, leaving you to your thoughts and will result in you just flailing at the ball.
That’s a lot of input, so take what you will. I highly encourage this way of golf!

Golf is hard. If I was to offer a few tips, I would say shorten your backswing. It’s losing shape at the top with some elbow bend and wristy-ness. Try only going to a verticals club and then the downswing. Can make the stroke more consistent. Also, your stance may be narrow. Hard to tell from the angle but there’s a few shots where you seemed to lose balance in the follow through. A few inches wider might stop that. You also rush some shots. Especially your putts. Calm down, walk around it, crouch down, pick a line and then step up and hit it.
And don’t be as hard on yourself. Golf is hard. Laugh at the really bad shots. It’s part of the fun.

I slowed down the video to 0.25x at 5:52 where you shank it. I'm no pro, but Seems to me like your feet are aiming way right of target to start with. Then perhaps to compensate for this, your downswing comes way over the top of your swing plane. This is really common with a shank (I should know as I used to do it a lot 🤣). Also, your lower body is very passive on the downswing, so try to lead with your hips on the downswing. If you're not sure what I mean, Grant Horvat explains it quite well when he is giving Bobby Fairways a YT lesson. Will also help with distance.

I was doing quite well on the simulators over the winter, but am doing really badly once started outdoors. I top the ball, I slice it, I even miss it. On the simulators, I do well with most clubs, and the driver was one of my best. But today, I only hit the driver well once. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Well I can see that you understand the swing SOMEWHAT fundamentally. I’d like to see you step up to the ball about a foot. Stand up taller. This is going to reroute your downswing but that’s what you want. In your woods and long irons, you’re swinging out to in because you’re reaching. That explains both your pull hooks and your shanks. Just depends where your club head is at impact. Typically it’s closed and headed left or you’re almost missing it and getting hosel. In your backswing, and if I’m standing directly across from you, imagine 9:00 in that backswing. I’d also like to see the toe of your club pointing skyward. Your face is too closed on takeaway. It’s not bad. Just reroute that swing.

You're holding your irons too far out in front... you are treating them like a driver...
Hold your hands and arms closer to your knees and you'll find more consistent strikes.
Bad shots can still be consistent; i played for years with a strong hook. You just have to be consistent to learn to play around it while you improve...
Edit: forgot to say cheers. We've all started there mate...

@itsjustgolf glad to hear you're still putting in effort to improve. A lot of people give up the first year or two. It's one of the few games where lessons are almost mandatory... very few people have a natural golf swing.

    • @jordangourley3955

Try keeping your backswing to the outside. It sounds counterintuitive, but right now your sequencing isn’t allowing you to drop down into the slot, because your lower body is starting before you’re even at the top. That in itself is okay if you have room on the inside to make the drop, but you start forward with the lower body, with the backswing already on the inside and traveling upward. This is the reason your club and arms have no choice but to start in an “over”motion instead of a dropping motion.
I had the same issue for years. I literally fixed it in one day by keeping the club down the line longer on the backswing

    • @itsjustgolf
      @itsjustgolf  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I used to think that power came from my arms hitting the ball. It took me a while to realize that power and strike come from the whole of my body moving in sequence🫣 Thanks for all the feedback buddy really appreciate it👍🏻🏌‍♂️
