  • Are you confident about spelling? In this video, you’ll find out the most common spelling mistakes people make, and some tips and tricks to help you avoid them.
But first, do take a moment to subscribe to The English Nut. If you’ve already subscribed, thanks.
    Episode #91
TITLE: How to avoid common spelling mistakes.
Bad spelling makes you look bad. It makes you seem less intelligent than you are. So it’s worth making an effort to improve your spelling. I’m going to talk about some of the most common mistakes people make and give you some memory hooks to help you remember the right ones.
Do you know the formal word for a memory hook-a system used to help you remember things-such as spellings, for example? That word is in discussed in the video-because it too is an example of a word that’s commonly misspelled.
You will also learn about six words that people spell incorrectly because they pronounce them incorrectly. Starting with the word ‘pronunciation’.
There are some words that are misspelled because they are actually two words that people have joined together by mistake. I’ll give you a couple of examples in the video.

To make the 'ee' sound in English, many words use 'ie'. Believe, relief, and field to cite as a few examples. This agreement is, however, changed when the preceding letter is 'C'. The combination then becomes 'ei'. Hence, Deceive, receive, and perceive.
Exceptions to the second agreement can, however, be seen in words like seize.

    Separate - apart

    Independent - ants aren't independent 🤣🤣🤣

Words such as 'advise' and 'advice' are misspelled and misunderstood. Another misspelled word I can think of is 'vacuum'. Often it is misspelled as 'vaccum', or 'vaccuum'. I remember it since my high school days. Got a thrashing to misspell it. :P
Wondering if anyone came across a dilemma to choose between, 'he threatened me' and 'he frightened me'.
Well, calling for the attention of the nutty English professor to throw light upon the issue from his 'bard of English'-ish knowledge of free flowing English, just like his free-flowing hairs akin to the original English bard.
Great work there! You are fabulous! Keep up the good work. 👍
