I agree with you about the ton of space in the gt vestibul. This sommer we ( four adults )spent several evenings eating and drinking in my kaitum 3gt vestibule.
Its was really windy and we just sat there and had a great time listening to the wind roaring outside.

Great review. Very informative. I have the Keron 4GT and the size of the vestibules makes these types of tents game changers.

Great Tom! You could have a game of basketball in that tent, such a lot of space. The ventilation looks sorted out and having vertical ends certainly enhances the liveable space. Brilliant review.

Hey Tom. Thanks for another very interesting review. Tremendous space for actually a very reasonable weight. The internal volume is particularly impressive for a 220cm long ground sheet. Lots of positives with this tent but more restrictive in its use given the large footprint.

Very much optimised for winter use. Large footprint is no more problem with snow covered land and very huge vestibule is perfect in winter if weather drives you "inside".

This was a very good review and it gives me a great idea as to how much room is in the tent being 5’8 Wanting to do an epically long bike ride and I’ve been thinking about the GT for rainy days now that they have the summer enters I think they’ll even be great for the heat in the US

Tom, definitely a bit of luxury with all that space for one or two people. Looked surprisingly manageable in that 20l bag. Very sturdy in that wind and no doubt top quality👍 Over £1k is an eye watering price, especially if you are relegated to the vestibule😊

Hi Tom, living in Ireland it’s difficult to get to see Hilleberg tents. However, I was in Holland recently and went to a brilliant outdoor store where they had about 50 tents set up, Hilleberg, Nordisk, MSR and others. I was like a kid in a camping store !! The tent that stood out was the Keron 4, it’s beautiful and the space. I scrapped my tent wish list and it only has the Keron 3 on it now, I took the Elixir 2 of cause I ordered it already 😉. Hey Bastiaan, that would have been amazing to see all those tents... Yes at 4kg I would be going for a Keron 3. Recently I was deciding if I could manage the 4kg and I probably could so you never know. Love tunnel tents 10mm poles and double vestibules. ATB Tom

Brilliant video as always. The GT over standard is a huge question. It really comes down to where you camp. The length of the GT makes for huge restrictions but it is a cracking tent. Personally im not a fan of tunnel tents but they have their merits. cheers

As always, great video, Tom. I have many Hillebergs and just got a Nammatj 2. I also have many GT's. However, my challenge with them is that they are too small (2-person) for base camp and too heavy (and large for my backpack) for hiking with the vestibule (almost too heavy for me using alone without the GT). So, they are a compromise in all use cases. However, I go back and forth on this point with myself. Same with using a footprint or not. I like hearing opposing viewpoints.
Hi thank you for your comments.. Yes I change my mind a good bit regarding tents and their features... Sometimes it just takes something on a particular camp to happen and that makes you look at everything differently.. I too am very open to the points of view of others as I am still learning different ways of doing things.. hey best wishes with all of your tents... Tom
Many of the Hilleberg 4-season tents are much better suited for winter use with sled then the size/weight is not issue anymore.
Thanks again Tom! I'm cross shopping the Keron GT tents with the Kaitum GT tents, as a late season hunting base camp and for canoe camping. The cost differences between the two don't seem to reflect what you get when you go up to the black label. I.e., there seems to be more value at this price point in the Kerons for the $75 USD increase (between the Keron 4 GT and the Kaitum 4 GT), considering you get Kerlon 1800 and 10 mm poles, a touch more space, improved weather sealing (doorway into the vestibule, etc.). The slightly arched roof of the Kaitum in the longitudinal axis would make one think it might have slightly improved air flow over the outside in high winds over a Keron.
Hi thank you for watching and commenting.. I would probably prefer the Keron as when you go to the larger sizes then the poles get very long and would really benefit from being 10mm for strength.. Durability too will be better in a Black Label tent... The Kaitum will have good airflow but with the Keron it will be a bit like the Nammatj in that it doesn't matter due to the strength of the poles and fabric.... Never an easy choice though as too many options at a similar weight... ATB with your choice. Tom
A joy to see you reviewing another tent I could live with, Tom. The two vertical walls do make a huge difference and the vestibule has had a great reaction. Top stuff.
I'm wondering why they dropped the Keron 2 ? A Keron 3 is a tent I'd like you to test, if you get the chance but it might be more than enough for one person+.

Test a Keron 3?? Would nearly buy one ha ha.... But have gone to the dark side and got a Fjalraven coming next week... That will be some comparison against the Hilles...... Thank you for your positive comments but did I miss them on my Nammatj ??? (was it the audio? ha ha ). I would buy a Keron 2 over a Tarra I think if they made one... I heard they didn't sell too well and that's why they don't make them any more... Getting plenty of offers to test tents so you never know.... Just used the Lanshan Pro 2 which 3FUL sent me last night and it was awesome even if I honestly had to ring out my trek towel 7 times after wiping down condensation of the single layer.... But the lake I camped at always throughs up serious dampness and there was zero wind...One for you to watch out for.... ATB and hope you are well. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 G'morning Tom. I had a Keron 4 for a couple of years and used to sleep across it, but it proved to be too big. Adding a GT would be crazy. I would buy a Keron 2 in a New York heart beat if Hilleberg offered it again. A Keron 3 is a possibility for my future and I've been comparing it to my much loved and very cozy TN Super Quasar Expedition.

Re your Nammatj video, I watched it a couple of times, but all it did was reinforce all the reasons I regard this as a really shitty tent, a dreadful beast for all the reasons you mention. Mine was a GT and it was awful, awful !! Now, I've tried to understand why I feel that way and others seem to really like it. All I can conclude is that mine was an early 9mm pole version, plus there may have been too much fabric on the back end. However, you mentioned all my complaints. I'd wake up with my feet wet, or pillows wet. In rain, the ventilation was dreadful. The vestibule door design was crap as the top couldn't be dropped and the footprint was always wet. After rain, or heavy condensation, the inner was sodden and waiting for it to dry was a pain. Dreadful tent, imo, others opinion may vary.
7 wet towels in a single skin tent ? Not for me. Good testing though Tom. 🙂
Hi Tom, I have thoroughly enjoyed your video's & the your reviews carried out in extreme weathers. I have two young daughters who love camping in our large family tent. They have watched a couple of your video's and on our next trip would like to do a night or two wild camping they are 8 & 7 the vestibule review would be very practical for us. With this in mind which tent would be suitable for a dad & two girls, we wouldn't need the four season black editions, especially if there are no mosquito netting.

Another fantastic review Tom. I’d happily live in a tent that size. It looks more comfortable than my house😂 Brilliant bit of kit as is the Nammatj. At 3.8 kg it’s actually not bad considering the strength and volume. A full geodesic weighs more than that and is a lot smaller.

Out last night in the Lanshan and some difference and a palace inside too space wise... Really hope that you are happy with your AKTO as its one of my favourites. I was going to pack it last night but then the Lanshan arrived and a quick pitch in the garden to check it and I took it instead. ATB Tom

There is only solid fabric on the vents which run at the sloping angle of the vestibule. You can unzip these. There is no mesh. Solid open. Solid closed…I hope this helps... ATB Tom

Had to watch this in a hurry so I might have missed it but do you know that both vestibules can be opened and stowed away to make awesome porches? Absolutely a deal maker when camping with decent weather and a view.
Another thing, it is perfectly possible to sleep crosswise with four adults in the 4gt.

Hey Ivor thank you for watching and commenting on the video.. As I only borrowed this tent I am unsure regarding the vestibule stowing away.. I did previously review a 4 person Saitaris and you could definitely lay across it. I had a look at the dimensions from the Hilleberg website and they are similar so I am sure that would work.. You can have a look at that video and it might help . All the very best Tom
You may want to consider that the length of the kaitum is very long. I had a kaitum 2 for a short time and there are camp space requirements that a kaitum + guylines are too big for. I also have the tarra and depending where you go, also had the same issue. Hilleberg mentioned they don’t recommend taking the kaitum up the mountain.
Ultimately i went with the nammatj and let go of the kaitum.

Yes to the vertical doors, for head and foot space, not having the condensation soak the end of your quilt, or sleeping bag. This is what I like about my Tarra, and is why I am going to add the Kaitum, and or Helags to my collection.

Very nice tent review, Tom. It’s a beast isn’t it? Massive amount of functional vestibule space and good living area too. As you say, the vertical walls gives it a good amount of usable space, especially if you’re a bit taller. I was going to ask you about a footprint, however I see you had one in the backyard pitch. Due to damp or wet ground and slightly overgrown terrain, I really like a footprint. So when are you getting a GT? 😀
Hi Barry thank you for your feedback... Yes this sure is a beast but good volume and strength for the weight. If you want big vestibule then no need for half measures so Hilliberg have done it right... For me the footprint size here just makes it too heavy... No GT for me as all my trips I am hauling it by myself ha ha. ATB Tom

Very nice review Tom. I enjoy the Kaitum 2 GT, but I wanted to hear your thoughts first. Though I've had many Hilleberg's, I've never had a Kaitum but for me the Kaitum series is Hilleberg's best all around. The Kaitum 2GT is the worst of the best in my opinion, due to a heavy weight, it requiring a long flat pitching area, and it providing excessive vestibule space and a narrow sleeping area. It's still impressive but I generally lean towards a standard Kaitum 3 for 2 people comfortably in all 4 seasons, or a 3GT if on a deep winter trip or with dogs. The biggest flaw with the Kaitum in my eyes is the lack of mosquito nets on the vents, this is a major flaw anywhere with insects and it requires the weight penalty of a Keron to fix it. Lastly, it's so expensive for such a narrow tent, that economically and for the minimal weight penalty the Kaitum 3 just seems to remedy things. It's certainly not underrated over here, it's popular as hell (the Kaitum series). Great video as ever.
Hey Green Panda, I really appreciate this feedback.. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of a mosquito netting on the vents as my Nammatj 2 has them.. Maybe its a Black Label thing.... don't actually know the answer... Great to hear of the Kaitums popularity but not too many videos on TH-cam.... With the long footprint this tent is heavy and you absolutely need to be sure that is is for you... In the 2 its out of proportion for sure being so long... The length too for me is a bit excessive so I meant to suggest some improvements but ended up missing that one but you have done it for me thank you..If Hilleberg made a compact version 20 cm shorter then that would help..... ATB and loved your thoughts here... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 thanks Tom. I was confident we were on the same page. Unfortunately Hilleberg are not really keen on modifying their tent designs so the advantages/disadvantages force you in to other models. Yes it's a black label thing but it really doesn't need to be I don't feel, and given the Kaitum is lighter and less stable than it's sibling Keron, with arguably more summer focus, you'd think mosquito nets would be more justifiable there than a Keron, or at least equally so. Bearing in mind you can't hardly prevent bugs with the Helags outer tent design. It's a minor point but it could mean the difference between a couple of midges or a swarm in your vestibule. I'd highly recommend a straight Kaitum 3, even 3 big tall people can fit at a push, and if it's without winter gear or dogs there's plenty of room. Another annoying thing with a Kaitum is that you can't simply bolster the tent to 10mm poles, but you can always double pole so I suppose it's not really the end of the world. I wish I'd started my hilleberg journey with either a Kaitum 2 or 3!

@@greenpanda7121 10 mm poles are available for the Kaitum 3 ( and 4 ). The only tunnel tent models you can’t get it for is the Kaitum 2, Nallo 2 and Anjan 2, which is sad. Double pole is an option, but is heavier than a set of 10 mm poles. I have a Kaitum 2. Agree with you regarding the lack of mosquito net in the vents. I would not believe it will be a dramatic weight difference to add. But it’s a Black Label thing.
@@sveinottoaar2543 great info thanks, my mistake about the 10mm for the kaitum 3. I haven't looked correctly then. Shame they aren't available for the Kaitum 2, great tent, and I really like the 10mm poles myself. I think Hilleberg is a company that refuses to change design, even in some cases where it would be a clear improvement, to simply move sales from one model to another. The lack of mosquito nets in Kaitum, given the weight difference would be nearly zero, whilst the jump to a Keron in weight is huge, is a good example of this. Additional pockets in the Allak 2 is another. Thanks for the helpful comment!

Ps tried the Nordisk Svalbard, had to send it back as my LW exped mat did not fit as it narrowed so much, so still looking for a strong one man tent with some space !

I went for the Kaitum 2 last year as I thought the GT version was too long and might restrict where I could pitch it. The GT was a bit heavier too. I also own a Nallo 2 that I bought a couple of decades ago. They are great tents!
Hi Stuart, I totally agree about the length, weight and footprint of the GT model here.. My friend has the 2 and it really is a fantastic tent. I have considered the Nallo 2 on many occasions but another tent has just pipped it to the post regarding my particular camping requirements... Great to hear that you got two fantastic tents... Kaitum is a great tent. 3 pole design is much Superior to 2 poles. I think it's one of hillebergs most versatile options. Imagine the kaitum 2 (not gt) is basically same weight as a black label Soulo?

Hey Tom. Still been doing research and narrowed things down to the Kaitum 2 vs Rogen. Wondering if you've been able to check out the Rogen, especially the living space vs Kaitum. Do you think the Kaitum 2 would have enough room for 2 backpackers or would it be too tight? It's tough balancing weight vs strength and internal space. I'd be open to other options, of course if you think another tent may provide better living space and deliver a similar quality structure for my needs listed above. Was considering the Access 2 but have ruled that out. Thanks a ton bro! Hope youre doing well
Hey, great to hear your thoughts on a new tent..The Rogen is good space wise but probably not actually as roomy as the Kaitum which has more room and internal volume than most Hilleberg 2 person tents... The Kaitum also has two vestibules allowing you to orientate the tent always having one vestibule completely sheltered.. Its a good bit stronger than the Rogen too... The Nammatj 2 or 3 is another option at a similar weight but not as long in the real world due to the slop at the rear... Hope this helps and any further thoughts just ask... best wishes Tom

Excellent review. Would you say this particular tent is a true 2 person tent? Debating between the 2 & the 3.
Yes based on the other two person tents it's definitely a good two person tent space wise.. Definitely more room than a Nallo 2 for example.. The 3 person version won't be that much heavier though especially when the weight is divided... It will have a big footprint though as it will be wide as well as very long... The 2 here will be more versatile as you could use it on your own and with 2 persons.. Always pros and cons and never easy to decide.. I hope that helps.. best wishes Tom

Hey Tom. I am really interested in the Kaitum2. I am 6'2, 200lbs and my hiking buddy is similar in size. I'd be using it for regular backpacking here in Colorado in and above treeline, but the weather can change quickly and get really nasty with rain, thunderstorms, hail and snow. That happened last week to me in July! Anyways I'm looking for a solid tent, roomy enough for the two of us and not cramped. Considering the Kaitum3 but wondering if that is too much tent and unnecessary. Love your reviews as they are honest and thorough. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Happy travels!
Hi thank you for watching and great to hear your feedback.. Only 300g between the 2 and 3 so not much weight for the extra space.. But once you go to the larger models in any tent with longer poles and more fabric I feel that you loose some strength and weather resistance due to the extra tent volume... the 9mm poles that support the Kaitums are ok in the 2 but once you go to the 3 then I personally it wouldn't be for me.. But its just whether you favour weather resistance or internal space.. best wishes Tom
The dad sleeping in the vestibule was probably doing his best to take care of his wife and kids because he feels the cold less than they do, so he was sleeping in the colder part of the tent.

Thanks for this Tom, really enjoyed watching this film! Really well made, and very informative! I was shocked at how light this tent was, for its size. From memory, is the vestibule in this tent bigger than the Saitaris? I really like the idea of sleeping in the vestibule.
Just checked. Both vestibules are 180cm.
HI Phil, You beat me to it.... The vestibule here seems much bigger as you kind of view it in proportion to tent size if that makes sense. Width wise a bit difference though... ATB Tom
I have the Nammatj 2 GT and I always try to take it for a variety of reasons but mainly that vestibule. Kinda ruins you for other tents.

@@TOMHEANEY100 I'm sure I'll watch it but it's not my type of tent tbh I always prefer to carry a little extra weight for the strength and security a tent with decent poles gives I understand some are on a budget and or looking for lightweight but it's not for me

Now I’ve managed to calm down, this is the usual excellent review I’ve come to expect. The GT aspect is something I have been curious about and will consider a GT model in the future. I thought it a humorous GT benefit where the vestibule becomes a separate emergency sleeping space after campers have a falling out.😂
Tom, have you had to double pole a GT tent and if so, was it worth it? Or, could one get by with a single pole?

Hi Harry, I hope that you are well.. Great to hear your feedback once again....Awesome to hear you enjoyed my SOH.... Double poling a GT tent fine but so many poles I think you would need to double pole at least two poles.. The poles are also different lengths which makes it more complicated. With the Nammatj poles all the same then any extra pole can go anywhere and they can also be 9mm which is not too much extra to carry... ATB Tom
