Chris - great photos and great tips. I've never tried focus stacking insects but it sounds like something worth trying. My equipment is heavier and bulkier than yours but I make it work. Most diffusers seem rather awkward when trying to get close so I've been working with a home-made semi-long snoot attached to my on camera flash. It looks promising but I still get some specular highlights now and then. Thank you for making the video. I like your last name.
We use the Nikon 60mm micro 2.8 often. Very sharp. For macro you will need to use a tripod as the focusing can get out of focus easily. We use the digital zoom focusing feature to nail the focusing area. You can also get a similar macro image with a 50mm lens combined with close-up filters. Comparing images from both setups yields almost identical images.

I have a Helicon FB tube, but have been having trouble with it. (On my end, I think, the tube seems to work fine when I can get the settings right.) Ooo, and haven't I just been trying to get a jumping spider photo, but they are too quick AND I am too slow. lol The bee in flight one - kudos to you. I know how many times I have tried for something like that and how few times I have managed it. Lovely shots.
Would love to see a low budget macro and close up photography I shoot with nikon equipment I have no serious budget for a decent macro but produce solid quality results without a macro lens I also hand hold for my flower photography I also use two lenses and two low cost options I use closeup diopters and extension tube I use the diopters on a nikkor 18-140 and a nikkor 50mm 1.8 and 25mm extension tube on a nikon d7100 and would love to see a event space video presentation on using older gear similar to what I use because each photographer can capture the same subject matter in different ways that do not cost a significant amount
@09:561:1 is consider at what distance from the subject? when u say same size on sensor im confused becase how big or small the subject in the frame depends on from what distance we are shooting too ryt?
Hey there! This can be a very confusing concept. I'll try to reword it for you. Let me know if it helps. 1:1 means the subject will be reproduced at the same size it is in real life. Let's assume you're working with a lens that is capable of 1:1 magnification. If the subject is 36mm across and the camera's sensor is 36mm across, the subject will fill the width of the frame when working at the lens' minimum working distance.
So is it OK to continously fire flash at these poor creatures? Taking one or 2 pic is one thing but firing flash 40-80 times is not going to hurt them?. I really would love to pick up this as a hobby but I want to hear from a scientist or doc that these creatures are going to be ok after we take so many pictures.
I have done some research on the subject and have actually spoken to an entomologist about it, but I am not going to claim to be an expert. That said, it seems scientists agree that flash (even several flashes in succession) has little-to-no impact on animals, big or small. There may be immediate reaction to the light, but there are few concerns of longterm negative impact. If you have specific concerns, it never hurts to consult a real expert!
You really don't need flash for Macro photography, I have taken many award winning shots without it. To be honest I feel flash in macro gives a very false look to the image.
What macro subject do you want to capture?
I tried with small fruit flies of 1to 2mm flies.I used Laowa 25mm 5x macro lens with ring flash.
I completely agree - background macro is awesome.
If you're good at Macro, you'll be automatically good at wildlife and sports, these genres just go hand in hand
